Occasionally I find the sound to my liking, but since building my fuzz pedal and Bluesbreaker pedal I've noticed all the same problems with it that Rhett described in one of his last videos. My take on Fuzz. I started playing guitar in 1960, played Chet, The Ventures and sang etc. Used guitar clean for years. Bought my first (and only Fuzz pedal) in late'66. It's a Gibson Maestro Fuzz-Tone. During that period I played through a Black Face Pre-CBS Fender, Super Reverb. I have owned many amps, but that is still my Go-To Amp. The last band I was in was called The Coelacanths, in 2005. Me, my original drummer and bass player from the band I was in when I bought the Fuzz-Tone and various other members gigged for about 3 years. I love fuzz. I have never needed any other Fuzz pedal. All I ever have to do is put in a new battery when needed. I don't understand why someone wouldn't like that sound. It was used sparingly and appropriately, when a song needed it only. I no longer gig but we Jam still, and I still use that pedal and amp.

Fuzz Addict here! I got my first fuzz 12 years ago; It was an MXR MC 402, which is called a boost/overdrive, but is based on the Freddie Fuzz. The next two were the EWS Fuzzy Drive, then the Retro Channel The Fuzz, which is a Mk. 2 ToneBender 'clone'. This past weekend I put the Retro Channel on the board again and it was Awesome! It works well with humbuckers, but singles work just as well. I have a reissue EH Ram's Head that is really good too. Great video!

You really coax great Tone out of Fuzz pedals. Always benefit from watching your walk-through posts. There’s a huge squishiness that doesn’t always come through in other demos?

Six months ago I was one of those guitar players we never really “got“ fuzz and I’ve been playing for over 20 years. Used a lot of hi-gain Marshall amps live over the years and considered that pop-punk rock tone to be my home base.
Needless to say, I’ve recently acquired a jhs 3-series fuzz after realizing I wanted to build a new pedalboard and expand my tonal palette and now I’ve been looking to buy an EHX op-amp fuzz to get the Billy Corgan pumpkins sound. That modern fuzz sound. Before I got a chance to buy that pedal I saw this lovely thing pop up a few days ago and I immediately ordered it from SweetWater mi utes after learning that it existed, mostly because I know how things sell out nowadays and I didn’t want to miss this pedal. I “get” fuzz now and use it when jamming with my brother all the time now. It’s one of my favorite types of distortion. It’s just so cool and chewy. Of course I’m also in deep with pedals now, having recently bought a photocell univibe and the new mxr deep phase. I must be trying to channel my inner-hendrix subconsciously….

  • @--BA--
    @--BA-- 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Great tips! Don't be afraid!
Making friends with fuzz is easier if you understand what it is. When you gently overdrive a tube amp (edge of breakup) you tend to get even-order harmonics, which are essentially stacked octaves. This doesn't add much dissonance, so doesn't need to impact what you play. But when you hard clip, especially with most solid state gain stages, you get square waves, which stack ODD-order harmonics. This is good for making single notes sound more like power chords, but since it's adding 5ths etc, it gets ugly fast if you hit it with complex intervals, especially thirds. You can use fuzz comfortably dialed back, as Rhett demonstrates beautifully here, or use it to brighten & enrich simple lines & punchy rhythms. Less is more, listen and adjust.

My first use of Fuzz was a Big Muff in a music store, I thought it sounded terrible, too much distortion, total disruption of sound for no reason, thought i would have never bought one. Some months later my Blues Driver failed while playing and a friend of mine borrowed me his Big Muff because I needed some kind of distortion. I was blown away how much it sounded good while playing with the band, cutting through in the right spot for guitar.
TL;DR: Fuzz should never be heard on its own, listen to it in the bandmix, it really is gamechanging.

I used to not like fuzz pedals but that changed a couple of months ago. Fuzz pedals are great. They respond differently every type of pickups more so than any other drive pedal. Also beware that there are too many weird sounding ones as well. One thing i don't understand is the weirder they get the more expensive they become. Start with a big muff or fuzz face type of pedal, you can't go wrong with those.

Hi Rhett. Excellent video. Thanks to you and a few other channels I finally took the plunge and bought a mini Fuzz Face (red) and it's now on my rather minimal board as an always on pedal. I just use the guitar volume pot to get what I need out of it as a when. After the fuzz I just have a compressor and a klon-clone overdrive in that order. I run the lot into the UAFX Ruby and out into Logic. I can't recommend fuzz highly enough. Many thanks again for giving me a different way to think about this effect and do something genuinely new (for me at least).

I’m not into the really high gain fuzz sounds but enjoy using a fuzz for low gain sounds in a swampy blues context. I know it’s not transparent but I think fuzz can add loads more character than an overdrive (especially the TS 😉). Great video Rhett.

I fell into the "don't know what to do with fuzz and kinda scared camp" - now I actually have some fuzz options I really like its interaction with guitar volume and turning back the guitar volume and layering it on an amp at the edge of break up creates a really nice OD tone which is more my bag (I layer all my dirt/distortion over amp breakup)
Oh, and please do a video on the TripleGraph.

Best intro so far. The shot at 1:47 literally made my jaw drop.
I also love these types of videos ( waiting on the Shoyles fuzz ) but a lot of pedals have a barrier to entry for me as a broke college student. I love listening and getting into pedals, but there isn't anywhere local for me to try them. And for the price point, it's hard to blindly buy off TH-cam demos. It would be really cool to see you review or talk about some of your favorite plugins, although I know you're mostly an analog guy. Keep it up, Rhett!

Cool video. Maybe do a part two where you go deeper with more examples of the ways you can use it in a band setting to fill in like you talked about. I could have used this in the 90’s for my band PEEL which was heavy grungy drop d territory. We were a trio with me as singer. With this I could have done single note lines but have it sound fuller. Great tip.

I've been studying Hendrix and have not used a Fuzz before. I was on Amazon and found a $25 Azor Fuzz. Got one today and plugged into my Marshall plus Boss reverb and DD3. I was able to recreate Jimi's smooth Fuzz tone. Something to consider. I'm an overdrive guy normally but I'm adding this to arsenal with my Nobels ODR mini. Thanks for this lesson.

@Gabe Souza - I remember reading that Page said the fuzz guitar on How Many More Times was his Tele plugged into a channel of the Helios console, cranked and then fed into a Leslie Cabinet (not rotating). So apparently it’s an early direct guitar adventure from Jimmy Page.

Fuzz is awesome, and potentially more than just an Effect. Many/most Effects enhance the tone and sound of the guitar. Fuzz can do that, but it can so radically transform the sound of the guitar that it becomes like playing a totally different kind of instrument. I think Fuzz may have been the first "Effect" to do that, and it remains one of best at it. Great video. Boss found the right person to demo their new pedal. 😎
