The ranking system works differently than you think. It's not based on what you rank overall it actually depends on how well you do in races. i.e not going off road too much, not bumping or hitting corners and not getting hit with enemy items. Took me some googling before I realised why I kept getting B ranks with straight first place. Hope this helps if he wants better rankings in future videos.
When it comes to unlocking characters from Time Trials, we already know he's gonna take much longer than necessary due to needlessly resetting good enough times over and over again just because he hit a wall or something (like how he did with the going pro in Wii Sports series resetting every time he wasn't getting a perfect game in bowling) and I am absolutely here for it.

I remember having the prima strategy guide for mario kart wii, and in that it said you have to stay in first for "most of the race" to get a good rank. Which is kind of hard when the game likes to throw every item at you at once and drop you from 1st to 12th in less than a second
I think the rank also has to do with how much time during the race you spend ACTUALLY IN FIRST, not just at the end. Which means it may behoove you to pick a faster vehicle that can get in front early and evade/be lucky enough you can stay there.
I did this back in 5th grade with a PS3 controller on my older brothers desktop in less than a week. Now I can't even get through a grand prix without some type of BS
