Ich besitze viele Stücke die du hier zeigst, sehr informativ und objektiv. Danke!
I happened to pick one of these up for under $100 US the other day. God it's awful. Sometimes these old VA's have a charmingly thin and nasal sound, and this one doesn't disappoint on that front. It's like the added they cheap distortion to make it sound even crappier. I still like it though. Crapy is good. Rather fun to fool around with. Def. going to pick up an ER1.
To hell with stomp boxes man. Kaos pads are the best for effects that I've found so far. With an X/Y touch screen controller and live sequencer not to mention the looping feature it's pretty badass. The only thing I have an issue with is the lack of information it's capable of displaying. The Kaoscilator is also a lot of fun. I highly recommend both.
The best synth groovebox ever created on Earth. It can create sounds that none of my analogues or digital synths can do. People hating this machine do not experiment its sonic possibilities. Even with no external effects or pedals , it rocks . What is sold today, by the majority of manufacturers makes me laugh hard : mini musical toys...
@@AudioPilz yes. As always, we can not all love or hate the same things. This is our liberty of choice. This is our thoughts based on our experience. I just regret not to have bought the bigger metallic version of the EA-1. I recently see some people jamming with them and other instruments. Thanks for the info.
The ER-1 was my first drum machine and it sounded tinny and flat but with a BBE Sonic Maximizer it could fatten up the kicks and low end. I also had the Electribe ESX-1 SD which had built in effects, sampling and a touch sensitive strip to control drum rolls, pitch etc. During that time period the only other step sequencer drum machine on the market were made by Roland (MC-307) or Yamaha (RMX1.) I also had an SP-505 by Boss and that was very hard to use. I’d love to see a video on that device! It was a lot of numerical editing to get things in the right order.
hey did you ever get a hold of the Electribe EMX-1? if you could would you do a video on that one too? better yet, maybe do a video on the history of ALL the Electribes :)
Do a video on the Roland sp555. I have had mine for a long time and though they are useful for a few things, you quickly realise that they are very limited. Still, I love the effects! Step ring modulation, step filter, and bpm looper are all great
@@AudioPilz Sorry, didn't quite catch your meaning. Did you mean the second video sequence? All I know is I'm an orig 90s goa trance freak. It totally cracked me up presenting the EA-1 as the emergence of a God. The Awe!
I could definitely see some of that sound being used in something like IDM or industrial music, especially with all those distortions and other effects on there. But there's probably better ways to get that sound. Once you've put so much processing on it I'd imagine that whatever unique flavour this synth's tone has gets all-but lost anyway.
well to be honest, all the presets on that thing were great to see what it could do... but i wasn't huge on any of that. i never really used the sequencer either..... outside of that, the ea-1 is one of the loudest machines i have owned. for some reason it is damn potent and rugged. i use it only for making quick bass patches that i sample into other things... sometimes i have sequenced it with an mpc or something (you can sequence all the knobs via midi so that is neat) ... i think it really shines as a simple bass synth. they have gone up in price on the used market so i can see how some people might be disappointed these days... but back when i bought that one there were not too many affordable synths. the analog wave 2.0 didn't happen yet.
I always used my EA-1's if I needed some hard squelch - theres some incredible sounds you can get using the effects especially delay - but mostly I used these for sequencing only for my live PA set up.
Excellent idea of show ! And really good and funny editing ! Cool. Well, there is a famous gear to talk about... forgotten, hated, loved, re-forgotten, now more and more expensive and re-loved. I’m talking about the Roland JX3P. But you’ll have to find one (and don’t think about using a JX-03 !) Good luck :👍🏻
AudioPilz it’s the first midi synth from Roland (1983). There is preset yes, but it’s more like a light Jupiter 8, very different from the Juno. It was based on a guitar synth, and they decided to do a keyboard synth finally, 6 voices. It’s actually a good vintage synth, but some people hated it, or underestimated it, because... some sounds are crappy in the preset bank, I gess (best synth to do dying cat’s growl), but some other are great and emblematic (maybe it’s not a English word, sorry I’m French...) of the 80s. Maybe it’s a too good synth for your show... but it’s controversary (yeah... I’m pretty sure this word is not English at all).
Got this and the ER, love them both and have some great 90s electronica sounds. If I remember rightly the TB 303 and TR 909 were also hated by purists when they arrived.
Accurate. :) It makes some killer basses - it killed a couple of pairs of headphones of mine at least! Not really deserving of the 'thinny' award it holds. Lead sounds are a bit naff and 1 dimensional, but that second channel is really useful for weird FX blarps and squizzles
I appreciate this! I started making music w/ ea & er 1. Er1 snare is OK If u use the random waveform vs noise. Learned that trick right when I quit using it as my main drum machine.

Haha I just realized that the one background in the first jam is of a power pole in Bangkok with all the crazy telephone wires(looks bonkers.) I put 2+2 together when I noticed that you have a Thai travel guide on your shelf.
Got an ea-1 15 years ago. Triggered the demo song, i thought “i will never be able to do stuff like this” so i sold it out of anger at my own ineptitude 😂
It has a pretty distinctive sound. Lots of the stuff in this video sounds similar to lots of the stuff I've made with mine. But it can do...stuff. It's not useless or terrible, just not great either, though it had the potential to be. Could try to post some examples...
great video! i think the EA1 isn't so bad! can you please tell me what your MIDI settings are on the Digitakt when sending clock to the EA1? my first generation Electribes always sound like they're lagging behind the Digitakt by 30-50ms, it's really strange. by the way if you're a big ER1 fan i highly recommend you check out the Electribe Shaman firmware upgrade! it provides midi CC and you can add your own PCM samples to the ER1!
THX! Have to look up the midi settings but as far as I can remember it was just straight master/slave without any delay compensation. Thanks for the idea with the firmware, never heard of it
@@AudioPilz We were an infectiously happy electronic indie-pop band known for gear breaking and a "the show must go on!" attitude, so I think it just added to the charm as we laughed about the awful sounds. It wasn't nearly as bad as when we had to replace an Ensoniq Mirage with a toy-ish Yamaha keytar someone handed us from off-stage mid-song (that red one that is actually pretty cool for lo-fi sounds). ...Oh to be in my early 20s again.
No this is actually the best of all the Electribes. What you had here was basically a synth with the power of say a sequential PRO 1 with an on board sequencer and effects. No SMALL THING. As usual the problem was the lack of skill and imagination. Within the people who actually used this gem. And countless other gems. In the right hands put two of these together with midi sync. And you can recreate classic Electro pop. Effortlessly.
My buddy is giving me one for free today. That and a Yamaha DX200. I can’t wait to run them threw pedals and what not. I haven’t played them both in at least 20 years
@@AudioPilz most definitely, although it won’t boot up. I’m gonna have it serviced. I cracked it open and can’t figure it out. Apparently the sound board in it is worth money. They add it to the Motif to give it FM.
I found one for dirt cheap on Reverb, and it sat by my desk for weeks. Finally tonight I fired it up and was immediately disappointed. BUT! After patiently wheeling along to A.19, I found a patch that actually sounds GREAT. Imagine the JD-800 "Wailing Guitar" patch, but with about 50% of the nuance and about 90% of the tone. NOT BAD 🤓 Seems like this little box has some potential if one can muster the patience to coax out the magic.
TBH I found the latest electribes are worthy of a bad gear entry too. When it was released you couldn't even switch patterns without ALL effect tails just cutting off. That was somewhat fixed but it was still severely limited, and yet managed to require menu diving. Absolutely terrible. ALSO, if you ever do a GoodGear (tm), consider the Deluge. It's... I don't know how Korg is able to sell any electribes. Or that new sequencer box they shoved out. The Deluge is an absolute BEAST. Also also, if you wanna borrow mine for an episode let me know :)
I used to have an ER-1 like the one in this vid and TBH I kinda hated the sound so I got rid of it...later bought an EA-1 (which I still have), but I'm kinda sorry I got rid of the ER-1.... they're just fun little tools to mess around with. Not everything is super high quality, nor does it need to be. I plan on keeping my EA-1 just for fun, even if it never makes it on a track.
I've been a synth geek for decades. The EA-1 remains one of my favs.... not because of the instant "fun" factor/knob tweaking (though for that as well), but (to your credit, you mentioned, the low price tag), it's ease of use (menu "diving"??? I disagree... it's quite quick to learn/simple), but mainly, it gets some GREAT spacey and crunchy sounds with it's automation recording (while tweaking over top especially). I'd like to know a better analog synth with as many features and interesting sound potentials for the price. Seriously, is there one?
It has a certain beep-boop charm to it but you aren't going to wrangle anything sophisticated out of it. Sometimes you just want to make video-game-y techno though, and that's fine!
Wanted to have one of those when they came out. Unfortunately, controllers are not exactly hollywoodworthy in gear videos (except for the REALLY cool stuff like Beatstep/Keystep Pro)
@@AudioPilz I had one briefly, I still use the software occasionally, Arsenal. Not a bad little sampler program, much better with the Beatstep Pro though. Keep up the great work my friend, I look forward to your next vid 👌

Did you already do the EMX/ESX? ive seen these older electribes done and the newer ones, but not the mid-school tube driven ones. If not, plx do it
Haha I just realized that the one background in the first jam is of a power pole in Bangkok with all the crazy telephone wires(looks bonkers.) I put 2+2 together when I noticed that you have a Thai travel guide on your shelf.
I went to University in BKK, love the city!!!
@@AudioPilz Chula?
Got an ea-1 15 years ago. Triggered the demo song, i thought “i will never be able to do stuff like this” so i sold it out of anger at my own ineptitude 😂
I feel you!!!❤️❤️❤️
It has a pretty distinctive sound. Lots of the stuff in this video sounds similar to lots of the stuff I've made with mine. But it can do...stuff. It's not useless or terrible, just not great either, though it had the potential to be. Could try to post some examples...
It just needs some pedals ;)
@@AudioPilz What it needs most is Accent.
The EA1 always has a place in my studio
I will never part with it, as well...❤️
great video! i think the EA1 isn't so bad! can you please tell me what your MIDI settings are on the Digitakt when sending clock to the EA1? my first generation Electribes always sound like they're lagging behind the Digitakt by 30-50ms, it's really strange. by the way if you're a big ER1 fan i highly recommend you check out the Electribe Shaman firmware upgrade! it provides midi CC and you can add your own PCM samples to the ER1!
THX! Have to look up the midi settings but as far as I can remember it was just straight master/slave without any delay compensation. Thanks for the idea with the firmware, never heard of it
I have an EA-1. Its fed audio and Midi from my, um, Korg DW-8000.
It sounds absolutely WILD.
EA-1 is REALLY dirty!!!
I remember our old Yamaha SY-1 breaking down in the middle of a tour and having to find a replacement quickly at a pawn shop... It did disappoint.
Damn, I really would have liked to see that gig ;)
@@AudioPilz We were an infectiously happy electronic indie-pop band known for gear breaking and a "the show must go on!" attitude, so I think it just added to the charm as we laughed about the awful sounds. It wasn't nearly as bad as when we had to replace an Ensoniq Mirage with a toy-ish Yamaha keytar someone handed us from off-stage mid-song (that red one that is actually pretty cool for lo-fi sounds).
...Oh to be in my early 20s again.
Your video made me want to buy one.
I'll take that as a compliment ;) thanks, but I'm not selling...
thanks for the video i would like to see the new one about mpc5000. Early it was extremely overpriced, but now we can get it for a 400$
Thanks!!! Great suggestion!!!
Awesome. First synth I ever owned.
Nice starting point!!!
Future music mag back in the day (20 years ago back in the day) made me lust after this, the er1 and the OG Kaoss pad. Instead I had EJAY.
*Maybe a little more than 20 years ago
EJay, the crusher of electronic musicians dreams
What did you pour in that cereal? Looked like water!
That was instant ramen with water;)
No this is actually the best of all the Electribes. What you had here was basically a synth with the power of say a sequential PRO 1 with an on board sequencer and effects. No SMALL THING. As usual the problem was the lack of skill and imagination. Within the people who actually used this gem. And countless other gems. In the right hands put two of these together with midi sync. And you can recreate classic Electro pop. Effortlessly.
Thank you for the feedback!
nice to see and hear a old episode where you don't just say the say sentences over and over like now :)
Thank you for the feedback!!!
HANDS DOWN, BEST MIDI SEQUENCER. ELEKTRON NERDS GET WRECKED.
Nice sequencer indeed
I still use my ES-1mkII, it's a dirty little machine. good video!
Thanks!
My buddy is giving me one for free today. That and a Yamaha DX200. I can’t wait to run them threw pedals and what not. I haven’t played them both in at least 20 years
Wow, DX200 - NICE!!!
👍👍👍
Great videos as Always!
Thanks!!!
Thanks for the offer! I really appreciate it!
Hey I have that one! Your intros are fantastic!
Thanks!
My EA-1 dissolved in storage, very strange, I liked it after lots of wine until that point.
The EA-1 is nicer than her reputation (like so many)
To be fair the Korg ER1 is actually fucking great so I can understand people being upset you showed it next to the rytm wolf :P
I apologized ;)
I used to have an ER-1 like the one in this vid and TBH I kinda hated the sound so I got rid of it...later bought an EA-1 (which I still have), but I'm kinda sorry I got rid of the ER-1.... they're just fun little tools to mess around with. Not everything is super high quality, nor does it need to be. I plan on keeping my EA-1 just for fun, even if it never makes it on a track.
Have you tried playing it with a keyboard?
@@AudioPilz not yet. I lost my midi cables in a move so I need to buy some more.
Big ups for the animal farm reference 👊🙌
Classic!
Had a go of one the other day didn't think much of it I got board of it after five minutes might have another crack at it
Definitely give it another try!
I'm addicted to your content! Try doing the Akai MPX16 people seem to hate it
Thanks & thanks for the input. I put it on the shopping list
For some reason, Korg made followup electribes with *actual tube circuits,* the EA-1 didn't get this upgrade whereas the ER and ES did?
I have to admit that I lost track of the whole range😅
Very nice channel! Humor is lead thing here!) subscribed!
Thanks!
I actually liked the way everything sounds. Maybe I just have bad taste?
Certainly not a Minimoog ;)
nah it sound sick! va drum synths are cool!
It has a certain beep-boop charm to it but you aren't going to wrangle anything sophisticated out of it. Sometimes you just want to make video-game-y techno though, and that's fine!
greaT Show, do one about the ALESIS MICRON please pleaseee
Thanks, it's on top of my list!
I'd like to see what you make of the M-Audio Trigger Finger Pro... 👍
Keep up the great work my friend, I look forward to your next vid 👌
haha cool video - i bought one - love the sounds - need to learn how to play it next - this will help ! cheers
Thanks! It's not sooooooooooo bad ;)
This thing is a beast !!!
Love 1st gen Electribes
so exciting demonstration
Thanks
