...its amazing to me how limited most, or all, grooveboxes are today, sometimes lacking features that were common in sequencers from 1983... like polyphony
One of the first pieces of gear I could get my hands on in my late teens/early 20s and actually liked... Sat next to a novation x-station and a JV-1010, all of which played along well. The whole setup has been featured on the channel by now, if I'm not mistaken. Never sounded clean or modern, even for the time, it just did its own thing with a gritty, boomy, almost bicrushed sound to it. But it was crazy fun, hands-on, and guaranteed to put out something groovy whenever given some time. Jams were hot. So much better than the grey/blue faced snoozefest that now holds its name. This is unironically good gear in my book, Mr. Pilz. Greeat video as always, by the way ❤
I am in love with the second jam. And those old electribes are such a breeze to use. Octave One uses or at least used this one on stage for drums, which I understand. Easy to use and surpsingly nice 909 samples.
Key to understand the electribe aesthetic is the pattern copy feature. Instead of making a song from one cut&mute pattern, you can copy it to the next slot, modify it, and repeat. This also forces you to commit. Sounds are bound to pattern slots, so you can't really have control over it across all patterns. This makes the songs made in this way sound ever changing. Of course, you can emulate it on any gear or daw, but here the device boxes you in with limitations.
I ended up only ever using the Electribes with audio ins, for stuff like Shamen/System 7 style gated guitar. Having an Electribe clocked to a drum machine then running aux sends/Line 6 Pod to the Electribes aux audio in and using it as a gate always sounded epic!

For me, the winner of the electribes was the EMX-1. The sample version was good too, but there were better sampler options. With both of them the ribbon/slider combo was SO MUCH FUN to play live. Put the arp in the key you're working with, program a melody and "hijack" it for fills and ornaments (including drums). Super easy to record live sequences that way too. Such a unique piece of gear

@@AudioPilz There’s a million sub genres now, so don’t worry, everything you’ve ever done will probably fit in to one of them, providing you took as little time as possible polishing it and spent a small fortune of Demobaza 😂 If you’re interested, my terrible Industrial bands were called CeDigest and Ruinizer - might be worth a little TH-cam search, just to see how low the bar really is 😎
Another great show! I have two of the originals, red and blue that i just bought and forgot about before diving deep into. I forgot what they sounded like and the raw sound is my thing! Tonight i shall work my way to the back of my storage, rescue them, plug them in and jam. Thank you Florian!
I almost bought the version of this that had the vacuum tube in it. I was shocked at how good it sounded on crappy little speakers in the music store. It really did add a lot of analog warmth. I couldn't afford it though at the time it was like $500. I think it was the sampler version the red one.
Awesome ! I own so many of the ER1s, EA1s, and ES1s for fun off the cuff jamming but have always found it hard to find an EM1 but my search must continue ! Inspiring and hilarious as always.
uhh, second jam provoked smile on my face lol, pretty hard to dislike this machine when i used to have so much fun dancing in a strange dark places to songs made with it.
Something about the tonality of it is just like the green one. Fun to own and muck around, but could never seem to squeeze the clear sound out of it compared to if I'd just sequenced straight out of the DAW. +1 for bringing the retro vibes home to me.
Hmmm... strange but I like how the Electribe works, how it sounds and how it looks like. :) Good review! BTW: If the small (but mighty) MC-101 is already reviewed then... maybe it is a proper time for Deluge? ;)
I loved all my early Electribes (blue/red/green) and they were great for messing around for a few hours...but in my case I never made a single full track with them in isolation. I loved the delay though.
I didn't know the og Electribe actually sounded this good, might need to get one for myself now. Love your videos man, every now and then I binge watch several at a time!
I had it. Many years ago I had the entire first series. 4 electribe and the Kaosspad 1. The EM 1 is between the first and second series.. because the sound quality is very similar to the next valve series..! The effect section on EM 1 has the same sound of the MX and SX.✌🏻
@@AudioPilz yes.. but not the electribe2. It cost half than the MX or SX. And the sound quality is worst..and not only for the lack of valve preamp. Electribe 2 about 300€... Electribe MX 720€ in 2007.😏
my favorite piece of gear is the Electribe ESX-1.... but I use the individual Outputs for massive external EQ and effect settings 😎 - nothing better than playing with this little box after a long day at work...06:16 = 👍🔥
The only electribe with no audio thru, damn that. Still limitations aside its simplicity and characterfulness inspire. Fun episode and I love seeing you feature old school gear. Still waiting on Yamaha dx200 to feature. Also the roland SH32 would be cool. Even dare I propose an Emu XL7?
One things is for sure with this unit and it’s younger siblings…. They can produce good sounding groves when polished up. The workflow of the sequencer is that of a TR-6 or Tr-8s without the sliders and dedicated knobs on the 8s. Some good Electribe sample packs on the 8s might be interesting too 🤔
As a legally blind person I know the UIs on these are awful menu-divey pits of tar but I do like how there are now touch screens or tiny OLEDs with eleventy billion lines on it.
@@AudioPilz the Circuit Tracks is perfect once you memorize everything as there is zero display, the MC-101 isn’t too bad, and I really want a Deluge 1st gen as it’s all light pads. My centerpiece is a MPC One and it’s awful visually, sadly the fonts are super tiny. Also all the Aira Compacts are great.
Used the ES1, ESX-1, and EMX-1 for almost 10 years touring and these things are built like tanks and have a ton of different sounds you can create with them, esp if you added your own samples. Loved this video, reminds me to pull the ole ESX1 back out every once in a while, cheers!
I bought one of these at a local pawnshop for around $100. It was fun… when it worked lol! For some reason the power port was damaged and if you moved it just a little bit it would power off. Had to return it the same day.
it is a very bad reverb in terms of general usability, but I kinda love it when used on noisier sounds, like some percussion or an oscillator mixed with noise, gives it that dub-reggae noisy spring reverb feel, especially when you put it through a compressor completely mangling the reverb tail. Add a sprinkle of delay at the end and you've got something quite pleasant to listen to.
YEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! I still miss my EM1, even though I have the EMX-1 now. Back in the covid panic buying days, I went looking for an EM1 and they were as much as EMX1s.
This was my first groove box and I still sample it all the time… The delays and FX are super fun too. I really hope you get the the green one… It’s probably the most unique sounding of all 4 and is perfect for show, because it’s both awesomely fun to use and a low bitrate, smart media disaster… and I think watching you sample, chop and “truncate” on that frustrating little beast, would be incredibly entertaining.
4:11 too real. I had the ER-1 and EA-1 and loved them dearly. I still regret selling them. As limited and low-fi/digital as they were, they were a ton of fun to play around with.
When Jungle took shape on the British club scene in the late 90s, there probably were only a couple of modules that could “do it all” in that field like the MC-505. This ElecTribe was probably designed only for that purpose.
Ppl look at me funny when I say I love the EM1. I was thinking it might be my rose tinted nostalgia, but nope...the kicks still hit hard and the bass tones are gnarly. Your second jam was excellent. Still proud to use mine. Like the Boss DR202, you can find many of the sounds, but you can't easily replicate the rough edges these machines bring to the mix. Bravo!
honestly one of best sounding intro interpretations, everything from drums to bass line sounds just tight ! Iťs whole recreated on this electribe, isn’t it ?
I have an ER-1 an EA-1, and linked together with my Roland SH-201, is a great way to loose an afternoon or evening. It's even colour co-ordinated! LOL!
bad gear that I wouldn't mind having for 90s beats, but I was not thinking it could sound as good as what you did with it. Especially great sounds when you paired it with its sibling. Anytime the first image I see on a video is Bill Murray, I know I'm in for laughs but had no idea how hard. Great episode, as always.
I started out making acid sounding techno, rave music when I got into using a daw which was acid pro back in 99/2000. I was dumb to analog gear other than guitars and pedals back then. But a few years later I considered getting one of these or one of the mk2 versions. Wish I would have now. Used to see all kinds of old analog stuff in pawn shops in the 90s for low prices too. 😮💨

@@AudioPilz There’s a million sub genres now, so don’t worry, everything you’ve ever done will probably fit in to one of them, providing you took as little time as possible polishing it and spent a small fortune of Demobaza 😂
If you’re interested, my terrible Industrial bands were called CeDigest and Ruinizer - might be worth a little TH-cam search, just to see how low the bar really is 😎
@@WVLFRVN @AudioPilz could cover the Casio VZ-1 and make some 242 style bass lines. I know 242 used the DX7/SY77, but the VZ-1 could do it!
@@AudioPilz You've definitely had more than a few jams that qualify - I say go for it!
@@this_connor_guy makes sense! Those 242 basses reek of FM
i somehow think a lot of the old presets would sit comfortably in an aphex twin song lol
They'd certainly do!!!
That trance line at 1:06 is something I still hear today.
Yea it sounds quite familiar. I swear its in my playlist somewhere!
Preset A01;)
@@AudioPilz absolutely slaps! They should make a whole genre out of it hehe
Sounds similar to M3 Bailamos. I thought same thing, sounds very familiar. Just a similar pattern
Another great show!
I have two of the originals, red and blue that i just bought and forgot about before diving deep into.
I forgot what they sounded like and the raw sound is my thing!
Tonight i shall work my way to the back of my storage, rescue them, plug them in and jam.
Thank you Florian!
Thank you!!! Definitely worth giving it another try!!!
I almost bought the version of this that had the vacuum tube in it. I was shocked at how good it sounded on crappy little speakers in the music store. It really did add a lot of analog warmth. I couldn't afford it though at the time it was like $500. I think it was the sampler version the red one.
I really want to have one of these!
@@AudioPilz holy crap they go for $1400 used now. The korg electribe esx-1.
Awesome ! I own so many of the ER1s, EA1s, and ES1s for fun off the cuff jamming but have always found it hard to find an EM1 but my search must continue ! Inspiring and hilarious as always.
Thanks!!! Gotta catch them all!!!
I still miss my er1 and es1 mII. So much fun.
Great duo!
I still have mine. Nice to play around with every now and then. Love your videos best thing on YT.
Thank you so much!!!
uhh, second jam provoked smile on my face lol, pretty hard to dislike this machine when i used to have so much fun dancing in a strange dark places to songs made with it.
That sums it up nicely!!!
Electribe was the first time I had my hands on the delay time and feedback knobs. I was hooked.
So addictive!!!
Classic EU Free-party staples!
So true!!!
Wow! I really loved this machine
Same here!!!
Something about the tonality of it is just like the green one. Fun to own and muck around, but could never seem to squeeze the clear sound out of it compared to if I'd just sequenced straight out of the DAW. +1 for bringing the retro vibes home to me.
True that!
Hmmm... strange but I like how the Electribe works, how it sounds and how it looks like. :) Good review!
BTW: If the small (but mighty) MC-101 is already reviewed then... maybe it is a proper time for Deluge? ;)
Thank you!!! Great suggestion!!!
+1 for Deluge!
I loved all my early Electribes (blue/red/green) and they were great for messing around for a few hours...but in my case I never made a single full track with them in isolation. I loved the delay though.
Delay is a classic here!!!
Hate on the Electribe all you want, this box is so neat.
So cute!!!
With Weatherall, Keith Teniswood rinsed the mk2 versions and pulled them inside out to give us Tiny Reminders 🙏
👍👍👍
@@AudioPilz You're great man. Always appreciate your Friday gifts :)
More importantly if you put all the Electribe's in loose order of release it spells...
eA
eR
eS
Em
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I’ve never been the biggest fan of EDM but you make it sound like the best thing I’ve ever heard
MIDI for grown ups ☝🏻😝👌🏻
❤️❤️❤️Oh yeah❤️❤️❤️
I didn't know the og Electribe actually sounded this good, might need to get one for myself now.
Love your videos man, every now and then I binge watch several at a time!
Thank you!!!
I had it.
Many years ago I had the entire first series.
4 electribe and the Kaosspad 1.
The EM 1 is between the first and second series..
because the sound quality is very similar to the next valve series..!
The effect section on EM 1 has the same sound of the MX and SX.✌🏻
I really have to get some 2nd gens!
@@AudioPilz yes.. but not the electribe2.
It cost half than the MX or SX.
And the sound quality is worst..and not only for the lack of valve preamp.
Electribe 2 about 300€...
Electribe MX 720€ in 2007.😏
my favorite piece of gear is the Electribe ESX-1.... but I use the individual Outputs for massive external EQ and effect settings 😎 - nothing better than playing with this little box after a long day at work...06:16 = 👍🔥
I really have to give that one a try!
Great suggestions!!! These three have become somewhat hard to come by. Working on it!!!
Emu sampler with the worst loading time but somehow nice
This was my first introduction to electronic music production. So much nostalgia!
Simpler times!!!
One things is for sure with this unit and it’s younger siblings…. They can produce good sounding groves when polished up. The workflow of the sequencer is that of a TR-6 or Tr-8s without the sliders and dedicated knobs on the 8s. Some good Electribe sample packs on the 8s might be interesting too 🤔
True that!
As a legally blind person I know the UIs on these are awful menu-divey pits of tar but I do like how there are now touch screens or tiny OLEDs with eleventy billion lines on it.
Hey Lexi!!! Any grooveboxes you would recommend here?
@@AudioPilz the Circuit Tracks is perfect once you memorize everything as there is zero display, the MC-101 isn’t too bad, and I really want a Deluge 1st gen as it’s all light pads. My centerpiece is a MPC One and it’s awful visually, sadly the fonts are super tiny. Also all the Aira Compacts are great.
Jam 1 @5:18, absolutely love that bass. Moves the floor in my home office! Patch 37 sounds great too!
Thank you!!!
Used the ES1, ESX-1, and EMX-1 for almost 10 years touring and these things are built like tanks and have a ton of different sounds you can create with them, esp if you added your own samples. Loved this video, reminds me to pull the ole ESX1 back out every once in a while, cheers!
Nice classic setup!!! Thanks!
the memes in this episode were especially amazing! this gives me something to look forward to every week. thanks so much for all you do. ❤
Thank you!!!
I bought one of these at a local pawnshop for around $100. It was fun… when it worked lol! For some reason the power port was damaged and if you moved it just a little bit it would power off. Had to return it the same day.
That's rather common with 1st gen ETs. Happens often with non-original power supplies and sometimes can be fixed with some anti-corrosion spray
Yessss I’ve been wishing for another electribe video! Not my emx but close enough!
I really have to give that one a try!
it is a very bad reverb in terms of general usability, but I kinda love it when used on noisier sounds, like some percussion or an oscillator mixed with noise, gives it that dub-reggae noisy spring reverb feel, especially when you put it through a compressor completely mangling the reverb tail. Add a sprinkle of delay at the end and you've got something quite pleasant to listen to.
True that!!!
7:11 jam is captivating. Nice job Florian
Thank you!!!
the sounds in that last jam are *chefs kiss* 90s. totally gonna be hacking into the mainframe to that song.
Thank you so much!!!
YEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! I still miss my EM1, even though I have the EMX-1 now.
Back in the covid panic buying days, I went looking for an EM1 and they were as much as EMX1s.
Nice!!! Both are classics!!!
Nice!!!
4:11 too real.
I had the ER-1 and EA-1 and loved them dearly. I still regret selling them. As limited and low-fi/digital as they were, they were a ton of fun to play around with.
Yeah, we all know that feeling
When Jungle took shape on the British club scene in the late 90s, there probably were only a couple of modules that could “do it all” in that field like the MC-505. This ElecTribe was probably designed only for that purpose.
Absolutely, any gear aimed at non-musicians (learn some theory!) tends to have flavors of corn and cheese. Thanks for posting :)
Mmmmmh, corn and cheese...
Bravo!
Thank you so much!!!
honestly one of best sounding intro interpretations, everything from drums to bass line sounds just tight ! Iťs whole recreated on this electribe, isn’t it ?
It's 100% ET with a twist of mixing in Ableton
Even though I love my Electribe EMX-1 and don't think it's bad, I would love for you to cover the EMX-1
I have an ER-1 an EA-1, and linked together with my Roland SH-201, is a great way to loose an afternoon or evening. It's even colour co-ordinated! LOL!
Nice setup!
Who knew the EM-1 could be a ready-made vaporwave groove box.
The reverb sounds like a bit-crushed, lo-fi spring reverb.
True that!
Es hat wieder sehr sehr Freude gemacht 🙂!!!
Die Freude ist ganz meinerseits!!!
bad gear that I wouldn't mind having for 90s beats, but I was not thinking it could sound as good as what you did with it. Especially great sounds when you paired it with its sibling. Anytime the first image I see on a video is Bill Murray, I know I'm in for laughs but had no idea how hard. Great episode, as always.
Thank you!!!
I know that feeling all too well...😔😔😔
