I gigged with this for over 10 years. It worked like a dream for this piano bar entertainer. More punchy and fat sounding than the Alesis SR-16/SR-18 . I did however mute the bass part and used the bass sounds on my Motif and Roland RD pianos. The song/user style section was good for making gig lists. I had structured it so that I had four sets of songs ready, and I had the first 3 user styles as general-purpose ones to be able to requests on the fly - even mid-song, which the fill to new style undocumented feature does amazingly.
Let me add, why I look forward to watching your episodes: I work with Covid-19 patients, I listen to them and yes, shit has hit the fan for many in many ways, losing their jobs and worse, losing their lives. So after a long day at work, I plug my 2013 Apple wired earplugs into my now ancient iPhone 6 and relax with your funny, educational and pleasing visually videos. Thank you my friend and I hope you win this contest!
The thing that this series made me want more than anything is not Bad Gear, but in fact the unified currency of dollareuropound. All hail the Global Union.
As an amateur guitarist and past open mic host, this little unit has served me well but I only ever used the drum function with the recommended dual footswitch. For that kind of use, the unit is absolutely fantastic and is still going strong after many years. Being able to trigger the fill while paying through the beat pattern transitions is a lot of fun and the unit sounds pretty acceptable through an amp. Great for guitarists and keyboard players. I feel that I've had my money's worth out of this little unit many times over. A great review though by a highly technical reviewer, which I found very interesting. Informative and a lot of fun to watch. Thank you for a great post.

This is a drum machine for the solo live performing musicians, it can’t be compared to modern drum machines since all of modern drum machines are mostly made for production or electronic music and not for live performance, this one is in its own category, I love having 3 variations with 3 fills at the touch of a button plus intro and and ending buttons, I own 2 and use them to play live, I play in bars and restaurants and this baby works awesome for that, I wish Roland made more advance version of this one that would allow me to save the data and transfer it to a second drum machine or to have a backup, to this date I have not seen another drum machine that would be this easy to use during a live performance sometimes improvising songs that the audience asks me to play if anyone knows of another please replay and let me know :-)

Back when I first was getting into synth hardware, I happened to see this thing sitting on a shelf in an antique shop with my mom for only $50. 15 year old me spending my mother's money didn't think this thing worth even that much money. @@AudioPilz not exactly. I remember taking it to a pawn shop to sell and a worker was talking to his buddy about music and he asked me if I made anything on it (clearly not knowing what it was). Yup, I've got one and for a while video tutorials for this unit were the most viewed videos on my channels. Gigged with it couple of times. It was great, especially with the ability to switch patterns with a foot switch. Also I used to dump drum and bass parts from my daw to the dr3 via midi. That's simple. The only con I can come up with is the lack of electronic hats. Only acoustic ones and it sucks!
i already plugged the DR-5 and Better(?) Gear DR-660 last time and i want to mention them again, but more importantly i'd love to see you explore the alesis QS6/QS7 or another quadrasynth model. when i was 16 making industrial music, all the rich kids online had a kurzweil K2000/ensoniq ASR-10 while a lot of somewhat less affluent kids with supportive parents had the QS6/7. these completely avoided any recognizable musical relevance, yet at one time it seemed they were everywhere. i used one only briefly, but i had the impression that it was pretty legit for a 90s ROMpler. alesis also had the nanosynth and i've often thought about getting one, at least to sample any nice sounds and sell/donate.

There was a Dr-202 that seemed aimed as a crossover between the types who'd usually get a Boss drum machine and electronic musicians who couldn't afford to get the Roland MC-whatever. I've been using Boss drum machines since the late 80's and this one has the worst sequencing of all of them. Nowadays I write MIDI drum parts directly into Reaper's MIDI editor and I've poached all of the sounds I could out of every drum machine available. That's the best of all worlds.
What about a video featuring the yamaha QY20? I had one, stolen in my studio in Africa, a long time ago... And also a video about the Yamaha SU700 (I still have it, maybe more difficult to steal...) and its almost infiniiiiiiiiiiiite loading time, either from floppies and from SCSI.

You are the best! Boss had some great products. Another item I want to see is the tiny handheld from Roland. The PM or PMA with numbers after it or something. It was a portable device to create midi tracks with built in sounds and a monochrome display (just like the Nintendo Game Boy) and it has a touch screen! All that back in 1996!!
Just wanted to let you know that I love LOVE all the details you put in your videos! like the toilet picture when mentioning reverb, the cowbell in ending and all the other gimmicks 😄 Hope you're doing well during the curfew! Also is the sound louder than usual? 🙃
Has this been asked already but have you reviewed the DR-5? With it's "a bit like a fretboard" interface? You could also use it as a (bit wobbly) guitar synth!
The DR-3 rhythms and bass lines were found in a dumpster at Yamaha after they threw out the rejects from demo songs on their PortaSound "Christmas Gift" keyboards.
Another fun video. Great show. Perfect timings and setup, you have my vote. With a keyboard like Roland E-80 you had a fill down and more options, curious what you can do with this kind of models.
Btw. Please check my TH-cam channel if you need inspiration. I am not a really good player but i just try something. I cant sell my g8 and e-80 because you dont have something else for the money if you look at the options.
good video, as always! Always amazed how you get results with a maschine like this.. bravo! I have an old "Yamaha FB-01" sitting at home because I talked to a pretty known techno producer who used it in one of this more known tracks. I never figured out how to get a "evil and bleepy" techno sound out of it but maybe the FB-01 is a good device for BadGear because it is a programming nightmare (imo)..
Finally you found something that isn't better though a moog filter, I ran a lousy instant coffee through it an it was a barista style espresso... Well you did it again....

War zwar schwer, aber hab für dich gevotet. Weil ich finde, dein Kanal ist einfach eine super Idee
Vielen herzlichen Dank!
Voted. :-) Also, you should do the Kawai XD-5 in future episode.
Thanks! Didn't know that one, looks phantastic!
I voted for you, because, even though I like the other performers on the list, your videos are the only ones for which i genuinely get excited.
Thank you so much! Happy to hear that!
Those were "great"! I'd love to find one of those!
@@AudioPilz I couldn’t agree more. They were also affordable. If I found one of these gems, I will buy it. Thanks 🙏 for your kind reply!
Just wanted to let you know that I love LOVE all the details you put in your videos! like the toilet picture when mentioning reverb, the cowbell in ending and all the other gimmicks 😄
Hope you're doing well during the curfew!
Also is the sound louder than usual? 🙃
Thanks! I usually try to stay at the same level but the internal processing of the DR-3 makes it sound louder than other gear
OMG, was that a U-220? I used to have that. Still do.
Has this been asked already but have you reviewed the DR-5? With it's "a bit like a fretboard" interface? You could also use it as a (bit wobbly) guitar synth!
Yeah, the DR5 came up a few times, thanks for the input. Let's see if one pops up in the local classifieds
Absolutely you deserve it. You put in the work congratulation
👏👍this channel is incredible for beat freaks & gear heads
Thanks!
@6:12 - great sounding jam!
Thanks!
congrats on the nomination, you definitely deserve it!
Thank you!
I love the beneath the planet of the apes meme in the begging 👍🏼
Let's reveal our inmost selves ;)
excelente video colega saludos desde Baja California
¡¡¡Gracias!!!
The DR-3 rhythms and bass lines were found in a dumpster at Yamaha after they threw out the rejects from demo songs on their PortaSound "Christmas Gift" keyboards.
Can I have a time machine and an exact location of that dumpster?
my favourite comment.
Another fun video. Great show. Perfect timings and setup, you have my vote.
With a keyboard like Roland E-80 you had a fill down and more options, curious what you can do with this kind of models.
Thanks! Wow, those Roland E models look ugly. I'll take a closer look!
Btw. Please check my TH-cam channel if you need inspiration. I am not a really good player but i just try something. I cant sell my g8 and e-80 because you dont have something else for the money if you look at the options.
good video, as always! Always amazed how you get results with a maschine like this.. bravo!
I have an old
"Yamaha FB-01" sitting at home because I talked to a pretty known techno producer who used it in one of this more known tracks.
I never figured out how to get a "evil and bleepy" techno sound out of it but maybe the FB-01 is a good device for BadGear because it is a programming nightmare (imo)..
Thanks! That one is a hot contestant!
@@AudioPilz Would love to see this one :)
Finally you found something that isn't better though a moog filter, I ran a lousy instant coffee through it an it was a barista style espresso... Well you did it again....
Thanks! Sometimes it just doesn't work
Pushing Donkeys should be a band name
I agree!
Ah it was a tough vote between you and Look Mum No Computer, but I went with you in the end
Happy to hear that! Thank you!
