  • Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools. Today we are going to talk about the Boss DR-3 Dr. Rhythm digital drum machine. We liked (most of) its predecessors but is this more recent model any good? Is the doctor getting worse?

    I gigged with this for over 10 years. It worked like a dream for this piano bar entertainer. More punchy and fat sounding than the Alesis SR-16/SR-18 . I did however mute the bass part and used the bass sounds on my Motif and Roland RD pianos. The song/user style section was good for making gig lists. I had structured it so that I had four sets of songs ready, and I had the first 3 user styles as general-purpose ones to be able to requests on the fly - even mid-song, which the fill to new style undocumented feature does amazingly.

      Mine finally went to drum machine heaven yesterday. I always thought it was a good machine. I wished there were more bass voices, but it was a pretty reliable unit overall. I've got an Alesis 18 on order. Hopefully that will work out.

    This is a drum machine for the solo live performing musicians, it can’t be compared to modern drum machines since all of modern drum machines are mostly made for production or electronic music and not for live performance, this one is in its own category, I love having 3 variations with 3 fills at the touch of a button plus intro and and ending buttons, I own 2 and use them to play live, I play in bars and restaurants and this baby works awesome for that, I wish Roland made more advance version of this one that would allow me to save the data and transfer it to a second drum machine or to have a backup, to this date I have not seen another drum machine that would be this easy to use during a live performance sometimes improvising songs that the audience asks me to play if anyone knows of another please replay and let me know :-)

    As an amateur guitarist and past open mic host, this little unit has served me well but I only ever used the drum function with the recommended dual footswitch. For that kind of use, the unit is absolutely fantastic and is still going strong after many years. Being able to trigger the fill while paying through the beat pattern transitions is a lot of fun and the unit sounds pretty acceptable through an amp. Great for guitarists and keyboard players. I feel that I've had my money's worth out of this little unit many times over. A great review though by a highly technical reviewer, which I found very interesting. Informative and a lot of fun to watch. Thank you for a great post.

    I was loaned one when my SR-18 died and at first I thought that this was an unusable dumbed down POS. Then I revisited some tracks I'd recorded with the SR-18 and found that I got perfectly decent drum tracks by using the intro/fill/part buttons. The ambience actually helped the drums to sit in the mixes. But yeah, the UI is crap and you can't seem to tune the samples. I've been using Boss drum machines since the late 80's and this one has the worst sequencing of all of them. Nowadays I write MIDI drum parts directly into Reaper's MIDI editor and I've poached all of the sounds I could out of every drum machine available. That's the best of all worlds.

    i already plugged the DR-5 and Better(?) Gear DR-660 last time and i want to mention them again, but more importantly i'd love to see you explore the alesis QS6/QS7 or another quadrasynth model. when i was 16 making industrial music, all the rich kids online had a kurzweil K2000/ensoniq ASR-10 while a lot of somewhat less affluent kids with supportive parents had the QS6/7. these completely avoided any recognizable musical relevance, yet at one time it seemed they were everywhere. i used one only briefly, but i had the impression that it was pretty legit for a 90s ROMpler. alesis also had the nanosynth and i've often thought about getting one, at least to sample any nice sounds and sell/donate.

    I guess this is Boss channeling their inner Roland TR-606/TB-303. If they intend this for a guitarist or one-man band type of live setup, that is. I'm sure the silver colouring is no coincidence. However, it does have a fair few of those DR-550 sounds so it's OK, but why oh why do you turn out a device designed for live use and make it LESS intuitive to navigate and use? If I had to guess here, they turned this out on the cheap where they were using their old tech and didn't pay for any design as such.
    It's definitely a backward step from say, the evolution of the DR-660 (I think it was) which was an expansion of the 550 with a reasonable reverb setup.
    Still, at the end of the day, those sounds are still usable.

    • @AudioPilz
      @AudioPilz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are usable but you have to put a lot of effort in it to make it actually sound OK

    Boss : Hey we have a line of drum machines that people have been using happily for years , how can we improve it
    Customers : Improve the sounds , add memory , maybe with USB
    Boss : How about instead we completely change the interface in a way that means days of menu diving and add seriously hokey basslines that sound terrible unless you're playing on a children's TV show .

    I have this unit for years and I revisit it from time to time. But it's so damn hard to operate that I usually give up quite quickly even though some beats and bass sounds are quite nice. I'm pretty convinced Michael Cretu used it on Sandra's european-hit "Heaven Can Wait" : it has the exact same drums and bass sound of this song right here. If this unit was more user-friendly, I would have had so much more fun with it. But alas... Boss should have asked a thing or two from Yamaha : their drum machines are so much easier to play with and their sequencers are always much more user friendly than this poor unit.

As for Mr Batt, well I don't want to start a beef in the comments section but I don't think I can see past the time he was taking a first look at the Volca NuBass and said to the Korg rep "But it's not a real vacuum tube is it?" the rep replied "of course" Nick then laid the immortal line "so, there's gas in there?". Was so sad I wish I used batteries instead. So tip for anyone out their make sure you have a DC adaptor not an AC/AC as it states in the manual it’s misleading and can damage the unit to no return. Given all the parts are smd it’s hard to get a spec or visual on the ID of components inside the unit.
