Excellent video. Will be using this as my guide when I replace the pads/rotors on my wife's 2018 Odyssey.

Great video, I have to do mine tomorrow. My wife put flat spots on my rotors too so I’m just doing the pads as well to get them done.

@@JACKOFALLTODD we couldn’t get that screw off the rotor, it is totally seized up. If we tried any harder we would have stripped it.

@1998232v6 are you talking about the screw on the face of the rotor that is not needed use a impact driver to 4emove it or drill it out never to be reused again

@@JACKOFALLTODD yeah, that stupid screw. I don’t have an impact gun. I just stopped before I messed it up beyond being able to get it out at all.

@1998232v6 impact drivers are like 15 bucks at harborfreight or just drill it with a drill the screw is used for assembly at the factory and is not used after that again this is for educational purposes only

Hi. Thank You for the video it was a great help!!! The steps are the same to change the front brakes on a 2019 Odyssey except the 2019 has a one philips screw holding the rotor in place. When removing the screw use the right sized philips head that fits completely, tap the end of the screw driver into the screw head to get a solid grip and you may need to use a wrench to help turn. Be careful that head strips very easily. Thanks again.

Yes it does i broke my impact driver they day before if I remember correctly so I just drilled them out there only for plant installation

Use an impact driver that you slap with a small Sledge. The driver is a few bucks at AZ

At your previous brake pad replacement, did you change rotors? How many miles did your Odyssey have at the first brake job? Thank you.

    • @JACKOFALLTODD

I went 40k miles on the first change and swapped rotors in this video at 60k

One item I would also recommend is using brake cleaner on the new rotors. They are coated with an oil based film and if not cleaned can contaminate the new pads causing squealingi/braking issues. Would also never not use a torque wrench, there is a reason they are set at certain ft/lbs.

Does compressing the pistons mean you don’t have to bleed your brakes?

    • @buildingwithtrees2258
      @buildingwithtrees2258 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes. Although it's not a bad idea to bleed out the old fluid, which holds moisture over time.

I only bleed my brakes when i get air in the line ie make sure you keep the fluid at the proper level. remember when the brakes get pads wear down if you add fluid then you may be over filled when you compress the pistons on your next brake job.

Wait. Why don’t you use the set screw for the rotors? How do you know that the rotor is held to the hub??? !!!

just an opinion the screw only helps holding the rotor in place during assembly

OK sorry man, but you should watch what you are educating people on here.
Forst thing out the gate was the van drift on the initial jacking up. Chalk off your tires.
Fliping a jack is dangerious and costly, use a chunk of wood if you don't have "offical" stops.
Second item of concern is the use of brake cleaners and not wiping off your rubber.
Brake cleaner is corosive to rubber. Your bracket boots, axel boots, probably any rubber on your tie rod all got blasted when you were hitting your rotor.
Clean then off after so your rubber lasts. Also if you hit the piston cover on the caliper.
You are good on cleaning your rotor to prevent rust weld down the road, but I'd recemend some COPPER antiseize on the points of contact.
That will always insure that you can pop the tire and the rotor off with ease.
Just make sure you try to keep it off the threads of the lugs.
I'd get some green caliper grease for the bolts you checked too.
Wipe the old greese off and clean out the holes then reghrease fresh.
Your pads will slide and return easier and you get longer life.
Last, instead of a c-clamp and worrying about damaging your brake pads when compressing your caliper, use the specialized caliper compression tool you can get at wal-mart for under $10.
They sell them pretty much anywhere.
I'd reccemend to people to use closed toe shoes and gloves but can't say I havent changined brakes in flip flops and bare hands myself.
Stay safe and know the back breaks are a different preocess on this van due to the caliper and the parking brake setup.
I second the comment on throwing the lock bolt far away once you got it out.

If you didn't replace the pads .no need to compress the pistons.

    • @JACKOFALLTODD
      @JACKOFALLTODD  ปีที่แล้ว

I guess that's true as long as the pads and caliper slip over the rotor personally I always replace the pads and rotors as a pair. I have replace pads without new surfaced rotors but I don't put used pads on new rotors
