- In this final installment, Dean, an admitted novice at chainsaw repair, is challenged with reassembly of the newly cleaned box of parts and the replacement items he ordered for the Husqvarna 455 Rancher chainsaw. This, due to the owner's running straight gasoline through the saw and the ensuing destruction of the cylinder, piston and ring.

typically assembly videos are dark, dirty and dingy and even then you can't see anything because their hand is in the way then this video comes along I am blown away with your clarity and attention to detail, lighting, music, commentary and just as important getting the right angle shot so we can all see what your doing. You got my vote for best in class chainsaw repair help videos. Class Act!

I agree you make it easy to see each part and how it's installed. Although I have done a few Stihl and an echo cs 8000 gray "what a beast" and no compression release. I have a bunch of prehistoric McCullough super and other McCullough dinosaurs
A wonderfully well done video. My only critique is that WD-40 is not a very good lube in this situation. I use 2 cycle oil when assembling and grease on the clutch bearing
Thanks Mr. Jackson. Yeah, I've gotten more than one comment that indicated I should have used a better lubricant. In hindsight, I probably would've used something different, but then again, I don't do this for a living and I can always learn from good folks like yourself.

I just did the same repair on my 455 Rancher chain saw. Ended up with a part left over. Thanks to your video, I found out where the fly wheel shroud went. :) It is now in place. This is the best video I have seen for those of us that dare to do our own repairs if we own a Husqvarna Rancher Chainsaw. THANK YOU !

Great job. Helped me with my Husqvarna 455 Rancher. I had an chain oil issue and took it all apart just to find out my bar oil hole was clogged (ha ha on me) I too got the clutch tool, it makes a big difference. Thank you for putting the time in for a very informative video, it helps us mechanically challenged greatly.,

Great video ! A number of years back a tree fell on my saw breaking the case and fuel cap, the dealer said it wasn’t worth fixing to throw it away and get another saw . Well after a few years I could afford a new saw but I didn’t throw away my old one. After watching your video I think I will try and replace the fuel tank which is part of the case and if it works I have a new saw that was less than 6 months old when I dropped a tree on it. Even if it dose t work I have learned by watching you work on the saw. Good work !

Hi Dean, replaced all the lines and purge bulb on my rancher and after giving the carb a clean too, it runs great. Starts on choke from cold and idles nicely. Your video was so helpful. I ordered an impulse line, but ended up not replacing the existing one since it was a bit fiddly and machine is running well. Thanks again.
Superb!! Great success story Adzy! The Rancher is a really good saw. I'm not crazy about the plate that holds the oiler tubes in place, but other brands have their faults too far as I have seen and this is a workhorse of a machine!

Sir, probably the best chainsaw video I've seen. I've been using and doing minor repairs on chainsaws for over 30 years. currently own 5. I need to do some bigger repairs on my 346xp, and much of this looks relevant. Like a few others I grimaced to see wd-40 as your go to lubricant, but looks like you've been willing to learn from some of the comments as well. kudos. Can't imagine how much more time it took you to make the video than if you had just done the repair, but good work. replacing fuel filters, clutch and sprocket, and bar oil hoses (and the occasional pump) are all great for home owner to learn, and your explanations are clear and helpful. cheers. subscribing to your channel just in case you tackle a different project of interest to me for the quality of your videos alone...
Yeah, unlike yourself, I'm no chainsaw expert. As such, the WD-40 got by me. But thanks for the video production comments. I tell my wife it takes me 3 times longer to do the repairs due to camera and lighting set up. Just as a point of conversation, I had 24 hours of video from multiple cameras to pare down for this project and the editing took weeks as this is not my day job. Nevertheless; the comments I get from good people like yourself make it worth it. I 'do' have some more projects in the 'can' including a 'Husky' weed eater and Stihl chainsaw rebuild that are coming in the next few weeks. Hope something else I do can help. I realize my topics are broad, but this channel started because these were the projects I was doing around the house and I decided to just cut the camera on and help someone else. BTW: When you have time, wish you would check out the Impossible Husqvarna Rebuild-Parts 1 and 2 videos and see what you think.

Probably the most professional, clearest and cleanest instructional video I have seen on any topic. Well planned video and, though about a different model of Husqvarna than either of the two models I have, much is relevant. Quite excellent and well worth a watch for peripheral points on, eg., sharpening.

Excellent video. To replace the aft bar bolt you need to remove the muffler, tap the bolt out, and fish it out. To replace the forward bar bolt you need to tap it out through the bar oil reservoir tank. You will not be able to see the bolt head inside the tank. A sharp rap with a hammer will punch the bolt through the wall of the tank. You will remove the bolt and a piece of breakaway plastic. Husqvarna states to just replace the bolt. I used a dab of silicone. Make sure you square the bolt head with the recess it fits in. So far no leaks and it has been in place for about a month. It is unlikely that shops will stock the bolts

The video is very well done. The only thing I would do differently is not to use WD-40 in this application. Use good 2 cycle oil,assembly lube, or gel lube.

I've gone through numerous videos and have yet to see the connecting of the fuel vent line to upper purge bulb receptor tube. I bought a bulb because it cracked over time and prevented the chainsaw from running more than a few seconds at most. When I received it luckily I order the whole kit with fuel lines, purge lines, air & fuel filter and spark plug. When I disconnected the lines on the old purge bulb they broke one at a time. I simply saw them with fuel now at the base next to each other out of reach. So after pulling out the carburetor the long purge line fellow out. Now I have no way of knowing where it came from and even worse the other line broke off from its connection end. I would guess the longer line that went into the upper longer tube to the bulb actually goes to the whole behing where the black fuel line cones out of and the shorter line connecting between the short tube receptor on the purge bulb to the carburetor port tube on that side. Looking at diagrams it doesn't show it completely anywhere that I have found including in this video. If someone would make this simple video of how those parts from the kit go on it would be great but they all seem to omit installing that long yellow fuel line going into the tank vent. The long yellow fuel line that came out was not a whole lot longer than what I thought would reach and it had a diagonal cut on one end and brown discoloration on the end I suppose going on to the bulb. I like seeing things easy to explain and show without guessing. The rest of the video though I skipped through it seemed excellent.

You are very kind and thanks for the compliment. No, not every muffler assembly calls for it (like weedeaters) but I feel more confident using it on a chainsaw with the increased vibrations and rougher environmental uses.
This is a video equivalent of the IPL but even better is you explain what and why a part exists. For example, what is the spring doing for the chain brake? Also, I have seen many cautions about removing the chain cover with the brake engaged. It seems you could remove the brake handle and use it as a tool to release the band over the clutch. Not sure about this...your thoughts?
Dude, you're setting me up aren't you? Just yanking my 'chain'? It just so happens, my most watched video is the one where I explain how to reset the Husky chain brake. (see below). I've heard that trick too with the brake handle, but if you are in the 'field', not many of us carry Allen wrenches to saw limbs and remove chainsaw handles...however; you may actually carry a wrench and screwdriver. Also, that whole 'plastic on plastic' pressure that it takes for the reset just isn't good...course, hopefully; you're not having to do this on a regular basis.

I saw a video from a dealer in the north west warning in dire terms about this chain lock trap and why Santa might not visit if I did this. I will forever approach the 455 with less trepidation...and most of my saw work is for the lathe or trees down on my 2 acres...close to the shop.

I sprayed each part with engine degreaser (even the coil) and let it sit a few minutes then submerged each part in a bucket of hot water and soapy dishwashing detergent overnight. Next day, I took an old toothbrush and cleaned up the parts, sometimes using a jewelers screwdriver set inside an old t-shirt to get into tight corners. For the electrical parts and wiring, I found no harm was done as long as I let them sufficiently dry out before using.

I am writing to ask for advice.
My Husqvarna 455 Rancher of 11 years failed to start during the last of several days of heavy cutting. My compression meter confirmed that it was not starting because it had lost compression.
I followed your disassembly and reassembly as carefully as I could, after purchasing an eBay piston and cylinder, crank and base plate seals, some 518 and other supplies. Upon completion, everything looked ready.
I filled the tanks and started the saw hoping for a conclusion similar to yours. It ran for a minute at higher-than-expected RPM, which did not slow down as expected when I hit the trigger to release the start throttle position. When I hit the throttle again, it bogged and stalled. It would not start again.
I checked the spark with my spark tester. Plenty of spark. I performed another compression test. No more than 40 psi.
What could cause the compression to be so low after a piston and cylinder replacement which appeared to go well? Any ideas?

I think you misplaced a decimal point for the feeler gauge to gap the ignition coil. A business card is about ten times that thick
The recommended air gap is .3mm or .0118 inch. Don't know what business cards you are using, but I just measured 3 in my wallet using my digital micrometer. They were .01, .01 and .02, hardly 10 times as thick as recommended. The saw is running fine.

The text on the video says, ".0012" which is barely a quarter of the thickness of a sheet of paper. I think you meant to say, "0.012" which is roughly the thickness of cardstock. You did such a careful job of the video I just thought you would want to know this.

Loctite 518 at what maximum temperature withstand?

@@PopaAlexandru. Consider the fact that the Loctite was optional. I just used it as a precaution. Nowhere have I read where it is mandatory to even use gasket sealant with the new base seals or the new crankshaft seals.

The muffler gasket should go between the metal shield and the engine, not between the muffler and the metal shield as shown in the video. See 26:59/34:21.

How did you clean all the oil-soaked dusts ?
Soaked all parts overnight in hot water and Dawn dishwashing detergent, then came back the next day and brushed with an old toothbrush, cleaned out small crevices with an eyeglass screwdriver.

Are the gaskets being installed at minute mark 21:56 a third party part? I just took my 455 rancher apart and did not see those gaskets there at all?
Yes, I saw them online when I was searching for parts and decided to order them and try them thinking that maybe the dealership took them out before I got the saw. They don't hurt performance but you probably don't need them.

Greeting Marius from NC in the states. May not be recommended but didn't seem to do any harm. I preferred it to running the piston dry at startup.

Dean; how did you clean the parts before reassembly?
Hot water and emersion in Dawn dishwashing detergent overnight in a bucket then use of a toothbrush and an eyeglass screwdriver for small crevices. I found that this method did not harm even the coil as long as it was allowed to dry properly. Also used Gunk degreaser.
Why are you putting sealant on the bolts? It is not necessary! Locktite on the flywheel threads! Really? Not necessarily
You watched a two part series related to a guy who knows nothing about chainsaws, received one in parts that he didn't remove, cleaned everything up and figured out where all the parts went back correctly....and it ended up fully functional....and putting sealant on bolts was all you came away with?

33:08 chain is 100% upside down. The repair is perfect nice job
The throttle is killing me and I'm a small engine mechanic. That long white plastic and stiff linkage seems too long so I must be doing something wrong. I'm gonna study this video overnight and go at it tomorrow. Any help in how to attach throttle is greatly appreciated. I understand the locking mechanism just can't get it to fit around the carb/intake
That linkage into the handle was the most difficult part of this video to properly capture. My best description is that there is a small 'tunnel' into which the white part of the throttle slides. If you watch me press on the throttle after the install of the linkage, you'll see the white portion going in and out of the handle. Let me know if you're still having issues after watching this video. Also note, I have several more 455 videos including the one where I repaired a leak and that video may help as well.

Mutta asiaan, video on aivan huippu ja yksityskohtainen jolla sahan kasaus onnistuu varmasti.. mutta minun mielestä laitat männän väärin päin? Männän imukanavat ja männänrenkaan tappi pitäisi tulla kaasuttajaan päin?? Videolla näyttää että tappi ja kanavat tulee pakoputken puolelle? Toivottavasti katsoin väärin.. olen juuri kasaamassa omaa samanlaista sahaa ja laitan männän juuri päinvastoin kun videossa😊

At 33:13 you installed the chain with the edge on the wrong side. ;-) Otherwise good video for beginner...

Damn Husqvarna used cheap parts worst than the China made parts. My Husqvarna is the same as a China saw because it uses China parts now. I could save few hundred dollars to get a China saw.
Hope you're not banking on Stihl. I got one of those too..won't start.
