The greatest Texas Bluesman that's every lived...and that's sayin sumpim!!!!!
One of the finest guitarists America ever produced.
For me the best blues guitarist of all time!😊☝
Johnny & his guitar were like one being. He never got gimmicky. Just played blues to break your heart open. Listen to “Sound The Bell”, live. His speed & clarity are awe inspiring.
You mentioned Hendrix, who himself did love Johnny's playing. They jammed together pretty regularly back in the old days.
Most definitely
Omg, the way he delivered that “Lord forgive my sins” was mind blowing!
Johnny was a one of a kind and a force of nature in his prime.
As a blues guitarist, Johnny is one of those I basically leave alone and just watch in awe, especially when he rips on the slide, which to me is what set him apart from a lot of others. Sing, finger pick, slide, flame..... The blues baby. Anyone can play the notes, not everyone can play the music...
How could two brothers have so much talent...extraordinary .....that's some serious playing from one of the greats.
All these years later johnny still one of the best we will ever hear.
If you're gonna come in guns blazing just make sure they're loaded. Johnny's always were
Facts!
Lol, awesome reaction! I chuckled because Red House is really an Albert King song, as is SRV's born under a bad sign!
Albert King, Blues Power incarnate!
Thanks for this video. Johnny was such a great and under appreciated guitarist and singer.
As an aside, the bassist here is Tommy Shannon, who went on to become the bassist for Stevie Ray Vaughan's band Double Trouble.
Played w thumb pick only, fastest picker alive no effectas
Spectacular.
I agree still alive and well one of the best albums you can buy
Both the of the brothers are so talented !😀🎵🎶🎸
Thankyou for honoring Johnny! You’re the first reactor I’ve seen to do it! ❤
🙏🏾🙏🏾
Gotta say it again how much I appreciate you checking out JW…you’re awesome young man 🤘
This is THE song that hooked me on the blues forever. Heard it when it first was released, Mind blown. Co-written by BB King.
Was blessed enough to see Johnny over twenty times , actually met him twice . There may be better guitar players , but Johnny was unique and my favorite axe man of all time.....
One of my fav guitarists, his slide work is also amazing. Though you never really hear mention of his voice, what a great blues and rock voice, full of soul and grit. Amazing musician!
Basho 1967, damn if Johnny Winter wasn't the entire package! He could really wail on harmonica too, although there's little footage of him blowing harp? Sadly the drugs took their toll, although he fortunately rebounded after getting clean. Thanks to his bandmates and wife, particularly Paul Nelson. Paul was Johnny's guitarist and manager and basically saved Johnny's life, FACT! But the most devastating thing about Johnny and his recovery was he lost his amazing voice. RIP Johnny ,today February 23, '23 he'd have turned 79.
@@brianwells4507His Emphysema got so bad towards the end that a lot of his "growl" was gone. He just didn't have the lung capacity anymore.
Really enjoy you sessions💯 Johnny played at Woodstock back in the day. Did you that bass player is a young Tommy Shannon before he joined SRV and Double Trouble?
You were the first person to introduce me to Billy Strings and let me thank you again. I have become a big fan🎸🎶
Yea everyone has informed me that was tommy and I appreciate you so much!
He was known as the fastest left hand in the business.
I am not a guitarist…or even a particularly big blues fan but I will say this: I associate this sound first and foremost with Chicago…a town in which electric guitar blues seems to be performed exactly the way I like it. It’s a sound I consider “loud, tight, sharp”. It is almost like the tension on the strings are 10x normal. There is nothing “loosy goody” about it. Also, IMO it does not translate well to arena settings. It is best listened to in a long narrow room full of people with a wood and plaster floor structure for a ceiling. The sound and energy is sublime. I go to blues clubs whenever I visit Chicago and the experience is truly one of a kind. I know this sounds crazy but I have heard so many great performances there and I can’t even remember their names. That said, I have seen many great classical string quartets and I can’t remember their names either.
Club-performance Chicago blues is really top notch…best in the world…and performers will talk to you, very friendly. A national treasure.
MEMORY PAIN SECOND WINTER UNTOUCHABLE BY ANY BLUES PLAYER
I agree with your take on Johnny. Because of his liking to rip it up, I think he's at his best ripping it up. It's why I think Still Alive And Well is one of the best albums ever made. To me, it kind of stands alone. Texas blues rock is where he could really let it go. Rock Me Baby, Can't You Feel It, All Tore Down, Rock And Roll (that's his song and Johnny can jam slide as good as anyone), and Let It Bleed are a sick collection of songs on one album.
🤘🏾
Agree. But I also love Before the Storm when a lot of it was playing with Edgar. But Still Alive is just too damn good. Also Johnny Winter (this song on that) is as killer. I’ll Drown in My Own Tears and Leland MS Blues. Damn. JW was a HUGE part of my youth.
@@ChefClary60 Agreed. Hell, Derringer also. I think Derringer is one of the most underrated guys in rock history.
To me is: johnny winter and! The studio album with Derringer !
Can you feel it baby! Badest of the bad
During the mid-'70s, Johnny Winter's live shows were absolutely devastating. I'm so grateful I got to see him in his prime: Essential listening is this set, recorded in 1974 at Fresno's Selland Arena for the King Biscuit Flower Hour, which aired on FM stereo album-rock stations coast to coast: th-cam.com/video/4SaH1WqrKuw/w-d-xo.html In addition to Johnny, the band included Randy Jo Hobbs (bass), Richard Hughes (drums) and Doug Brockie (rhythm guitar & first solo on "Bad Luck Situation." Also, don't miss "Johnny Winter: Captured Live," which was recorded the following year, with Floyd Radford on 2nd guitar: th-cam.com/play/OLAK5uy_laLno73pst8SJWNFL1MJYlwsmd3hVETI0.html
Amazing thing he can play like that and sing at the same time
Facts
Jw is my fave blues guitar player. Yay!!!!
The Winter brothers were exceptionally talented. Watched 75 year old Edger doing Frankenstein yesterday and he still rocks. Rip Johnny.
Seen his last show in America at the old rock house in st.louis. truly a master and a legend. He was so good i thought maybe even a wizard lol.
Man, you tube hooks me up instantly with your videos
Glad they do
Reportedly the only guitarist that gave Stevie Ray Vaughan "pause" when he saw him (Winters) live...
Cheers
SRV was a disciple to Johnny as per Paul Nelson audio from movie........ glad you posted this the SRV fans came a little later .........Saw both to me Johnny was just a different cut had his own style......however when SRV was straight he was great just before his demise he was off the charts......Thomas Shannon was lucky enough to play with both.
Highway 61 is another I really like.
Oh, yeah! I saw Johnny Winter in San Francisco at a small place called Slim's. Great show, tireless performer. Peace.
hey man loved the song & reaction ! He has a song called Last Night that is incredible. It is from the White, Hot & Blue album
JOHNNY ALSO CAN PLAY BB'S STYLE TOO! KEEP ON CHECKING HIM OUT! I THINK HE'S THE BEST SLIDE GUITARIST TO LIVE!
Keep up the good work Devon
Do check out the studio version, from the first and self titled recording. He seems to be tuned down 2 frets here from that one.
The song "Rock n Roll" off Still Alive... is a smokin' tune with some great slide which I believe Johnny did write, I'd sure love to find a live version. I actually didn't know this till the last decade or so, JW'S been a favorite of mine since my HS days in the late 70s, was that could give or take Rock and Roll, he'd prefer to play &or listen to non stop Blues. It's ironic because he when he played Rock it was as good as there is!
He told my father that the labels wanted rock. He said I blended the blues in with when I could. Rock payed the bills back then. So I paid the bills.
got to love the tribal screams / straight from the soul
Actually, that Red House cord is usually used with four fingers and Johnny bends it so it’s got a little stank on it. Try it. I like your slurry playing and I think you’ve got a good feel.
Triad
Your videos keep getting better and better
Thanks bro
You need to check out JOHNNY WINTER at Rockpalest doing the song MISSISSIPPI DELTA BLUES , or THE MEDLEY !!!! Got to see Johnny live three times , and yes , opening song was always something that rips to get the crowd going . The last time I saw him was two weeks before he passed away , he was still amazing !!!! Have you heard of ALVIN LEE , of TEN YEARS AFTER , his nickname was Mr. Fastfingers , he liked to play fast blues also!!!
KEVIN! AMEN BRO! I SAW JOHNNY TWICE AND I AGREE, ALVIN WAS A MONSTER TOO! I'VE BEEN PLAYING LEAD GUITAR FOR ABOUT 4O+ YEARS AND I FIND JOHNNY AND ALVIN THE HARDEST TO PLAY AS THEY WERE SO CLEAN!
I actually love some speed
But I also like when ppl don't just do things because they can...knowing a person can rip up n down the guitar if they want but just bcuz they can doesn't mean they will
I'd prefer them to feel out the beat first and shred when the feeling calls for it
I think in doing that u can shred with feeling bcuz the two meet in the middle
👍🎸👍🎸✌️🎸👍🎸✌️🎸✌️🎸👍🎸😃
You Killed the reaction Winter RIP was a great player saw him in D.C back in the 80s Check out Roy Buchanan Down By the River Live Crazy Good
React to 3rd Degree by Johnny Winter, you won’t regret it man! So far I haven’t found any reactions to it. You’ll be the first.
You're reaction is the best I've seen thus far on here! Jammin right along, figuring out the magic, but also giving that hat tip! You're a tremendous player as well!
Thank you 🙏🏾
@@Devon_Rismay Thank you for the content! 💚✌️
@@sprinklesthedrummer9731 no prob
Fucking love your reactions! I've been playing guitar for 10 years at this point and I think you would appreciate the band "The Aristocrats" incredible musicians and Guthrie Govan is probably the most technically amazing guitarists I've ever seen. Also if you don't know the band Steely Dan you should 100% react to Do it Again by them. One of the most randomly amazing solos in such a chill song! They're a band that rotates the best studio musicians they could find each song. So every song pretty much has an all star cast of musicians. Such a pleasure to listen to them I'm sure you would appreciate them. Keep up the great work man!
Thanks, n i'll take a look.
Aristocrats Drummer Marco Minnemann certainly is no slouch!
@@ronforeman2556 literally my second favorite drummer and probably the most technical I’ve ever seen. Dude is a monster!
I was tripping on this jam many many years ago..I think at the same time I was tripping on Alvin Lee spider in my web...I always wanted a cold beer and some bb king when i was kid..
The Winters were the best musicians to never make it into mainstream. Tbey were too good
The Red House riff comes from Son House and others from the Mississippi Delta, Muddy Waters used it all the the time and it's a must know riff. Johnnys' recorded version is better, please react to Johnny Winter at Woodstock doing "Mean Town Blues" and don't forget to listen to Grant Green. You have a nice feel on guitar and remember less is more and keep it simple, do not go balls-out when you're playing make the audience wait and don't wear yourself out, good to see you're developing you God-given talent, God bless you, I've been playing since 1970 and have met and learned from many of the great original bluesmen who recorded in the 20s and 30s.
Interesting 🤔
LOVE THE VIDEO AND LOVE YOUR REACTION DEVON!
Thanks!
I always tell myself that I play blues because I like the space, which is true, but also, I can't shred, if I were to be honest with myself (shhhh!) lol.
Johnny Winter? DIRTY blues!
Johnny could play fast or slow ......This Texan was it for me.
I think you and Johny would jam good together and your two different styles would complement each other in your jamming
❤️❤️
☮️💜
There's a vid of Jimi hendrix n johnny winter playing hey joe jimi plays base johnny plays lead and sings jimi said johnny was one of the best.
DEVON, IF YOU HAVE A CHANCE CHECK OUT "It's My Own Fault" FROM THE ALBUM, Johnny Winter And- live AS YOU SAID YOU LIKE TO START OUT MORE GENTLY, SOMETIMES, INSTEAD OF BOTH GUNS BLAZING AND HE DOES THIS ON THIS GREAT ALBUM! RICK DERRINGER IS ALSO HIS EXCELLENT RYTHM GUITARIST! I, AS AN OLD BLUES PLAYER LIKE THAT TOO! AGAIN, I KEEP COMING BACK TO THIS ONE AS I LOVE THIS REVIEW FROM YOU! GREAT JOB! CHECK OUT "JOHNNNY WINTER AND-LIVE" AS IT HERE IN IT'S ENTIRITY ON TH-cam! THANKS AGAIN MY FRIEND AND GOD BLESS YOU!
Brilliant video .
Thank you!!
Nice tones!
Okay, you’re awesome. Lol.
Hey my friend. Im glad to see you checked out JW in person on cam. So, I have always thought Johnny's licks were solid, not just shredding, be each lick was bascially 'there'. That his licks could have been slower, and leaving more room, but they were licks. Many of them better than Ive ever heard anyone else play. But never the less each person must decide what his/her approach will be. But OMG Johnny... him and jimi used to play at the golden bear hunington beach. As a kid I wanted to go in there at like 14 so bad. I never did. That broke my heart for the rest of my life. I'd liked the video so keep them up diggin it
Glad you enjoyed the content
Man can sing
Facts
A very young Tommy Shannon (Double Trouble) playing bass with Johnny. Uncle John Turner on the drums.
Lol, And that's how you do it .
Looking forward to more virtuoso (shredder) type guitar reactions.
Coming soon.
Coming soon
👍
Stranger self destructive blues
Great video new sub!
Thanks Devon, maybe do it's my own fault,l know reactors like live videos but album versions of both be careful with a fool and its my own fault from Live Johnny Winter and, check them out
In addition to my comment below about Johnny being a 6-ft 4-in albino Texan, his brother Edgar is also an albino. How often does that happen? Not sure but probably not very often but I could be wrong.
I think Johnny came before Hendrix but then I was twelve or thirteen. Maybe not ?
Check out john Dawson Winter the 3rd
I'm really enjoying your channel! React the guitarrist Artur Menezes he's so good, with original songs and Brazilian like me!
I'm a huge fan of his lol, I cover a few of his songs lol
@@Devon_Rismay yess dude! He's so good. Any day make a video react to his songs
First again. Lol. Sorry Gort you need Dropbox. 🤣
Lol
Devon!! 🙏🏻❤️ i learned this sht the hard way..just like black folks…chk out my Johnny Winter cover!
I think it was Edgar Winter who said Johnny's style is attack.
😂🤣
Have you done any mike Bloomfield? New sub here✌️
Check out ZZ Top (Billy gibbons) blue Jean blues
practice in the woodshed..
I don't know if you've tried it yet, but Marcus King, Or maybe JD Simo. They are a little more laid back in style. Both very good.
Did Marcus king, check out earlier videos
@@Devon_Rismay I thought you might have. I'll do that.
Gotta let it breathe a little. Johnny has other tunes that are more like that, but he's kinda like Gary Moore, busy fingers.
God of the (musical) gaps
To back up my last comment look up Johnny WinterJimi Hendrix
In 1988, he was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, the first non-African-American performer to be inducted into the Hall, and you are going to criticize his style? I don't think so Tim.
Pickin up on my MOJO by J.Winter check it out!
in my opinion, Johnny ( R.I.P. ) was the best blues guitarist of our time.......not bad for a an albino from Texas, right ?.......
Dude I'll tell you about another real fast bluesman ALVIN LEE
Alvin is badass
@@Devon_Rismay hendrix is my favorite
You mentioned the Hendrix lick and said Johnny stole it of Jimi. Jimi used to be the back up guitarist in the JOHNNY WINTER BAND before he was Jimi Hendrix experience band. Some say Jimi stole that lick off of Johnny
To me this is about his note quality. Loads of ping and attack in each note. The same blues phrases in other hands have less impact.
Couldn't have said it better myself
Don Ho might be a little easier to wrap around. Just switch over to the Ukulele.
Left handed players confuse my soul lol
Good grief that audience?
Johnny only played with a thumb pick
You do know that Johnny Winter was legally blind right? Not only that but slightly cross-eyed. 6 ft 4 in albino Texan. His hair is not blonde it's platinum because it has no color in it whatsoever.
listen guitarslinger
this wasnt even peak johnny winter, check out his shows from late 80s early 90s "third degree" live is texas flood on steriods
To my ears, Johnny Winter achieved his apotheosis in the '70s, particularly on those tours where he was joined by Floyd Radford and Doug Brockie on rhythm and alternative lead guitar.
