• Rock and Roll - Johnny...
For the first time on the channel, we are checking out Johnny Winter and a live performance of Rock and Roll on the Midnight Special! I had no clue he played slide and with a thumbpick! His guitar playing was incredible, but I also was super impressed by his voice! Hope you enjoy! #reaction #johnnywinter #rockandroll #guitarist #guitarplayer #guitarsolo #70smusic #musicreactions

Johnny Winter was incredible! Amazing guitar player and I absolutely loved his voice!
Saw Johnny a few years before he died in this small place in Hollywood Florida. He had to be helped out. Was completely blind and physical issues. He sat in a chair and kicked ass. You closed your eyes you couldn't tell the difference between him then and now. He will always be remembered, he's a legend.
Greatest slide guitarist ever, and oh yeah...top 5 guitarist without the slide. JW belongs on the Mt Rushmore of blues and rock guitarists. It's a Firebird btw.
His Live Johnny Winter And album is pure guitar bliss. One of my top 10 albums of all time.
I’ll have to check it out!
Absolutely!
Yesssss!
RIP Johnny, a true legend!
💯
Johnny Winter And Live....that album is my favorite album. "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl", "Mean Town Blues" "Johnny B Good" all fire.
Appreciate the suggestions! Can’t wait to dig into more tunes from him! 🔥
I've played that album to death.
It's nice to watch a reaction video where someone is competent and actually comments on facets of the playing abilities and styles. You pick stuff up quickly and had some nice insights to his playing and music. Subscribed...
I don't know all his albums and repertoire, but two albums I really like are the first titled "Johnny Winter", and also the album "Still Alive and Well".
Known as a great singer as well , amazing blues great
My homeboy Johnny Winter! ❤ Saw him many times. I had the pleasure of meeting him once in Cibilo, Texas before a show, and he was so nice. He actually changed his setlist and added the song I requested and then dedicated it to my wife and I before breaking into " Still Alive and Well""❣️
I saw him many times too! BTW..I went to Cibilo Elementary waaay back when! Small world.
Great player. His sweet spot, & great love, was the blues!
Johnny and his brother Edgar were albino so since they couldn't be outside alot they played music ! You should check out Tobacco Road live with both of them!
Wow, that’s so cool! I’ll have to check that one out, I bet it’s killer!
Yes yes yes ! Tobacco Road ! This is a must you should do it as soon as you can if you wait for a period of time you’re gonna regret you didn’t do it sooner two Multi talented brothers mind blowing talent I’m talking about
King of the Firebird.
Thats his wife Susan beside him . I saw him in live at Barrymores in Ottawa in late 70's and Susan sat on a chair beside him on stage . Randy Jo Hobbs in on Bass, just listen to the bass lines he's playing . Sadly Randy was an alcholic and died at 35 , Johnny tried to save him by he couldn't .
Johnny had about 5 Firebirds, they were sold at action after he died.
Johnny played traditional R&R to pay the bills but his first (and always) love was the blues. If you love his slide work check out Highway 61 Revisited or Mean Town Blues. Check out the live Be Careful With a Fool video floating around to see his full magnificent blues playing. He helped Muddy Waters resurgence in the 80's producing and playing on his Grammy winning albums. For something interesting check out the video of his last song recorded before he passed, pulling out the National Steel Resonator guitar performing Death Letter, an old Son House number.
Thanks for the suggestions!
Finally !!!! someone reacting to JOhnny.
FYI: Johnny was an albino so hence the white hair and fair skin. He wasn't particularly fond of this period in his career cause his first true love was the Blues and he has some of the best blues tunes ever. If you like his slide playing check out "Mojo Boogie"
He had one of the greatest raw voice ever.
I loved his voice, wish it would’ve been showcased more in the mix! I’ll have to check that tune out, thanks for the suggestion!

this a good one.....
Amen brother
@@setonhillstudios There was no one like him, and he was a really humble guy as well. He had a real interesting life.
@@duglycreations3066 😀
In 1988 Johnny became the first non-African American inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame.
Oh wow 🤯
@@setonhillstudios And after years of being cheated and debased by record companies, Johnny revived the career of Muddy Waters, as I recall getting Muddy Waters a Grammy win, and it helped reestablish the career of Muddy Waters, who referred to Johnny as "my son!" Muddy Waters album, "Hard Again" is a blues masterpiece, produced and played on by Johnny. who was as I recall, credited with "guitars and 'hollerin'"!
Yes, Johnny used a metal thumb pick! IIRC, he says in the documentary "Down and Dirty" (definitely worth a watch) that he wouldn't know how to play with a plastic pick. I think he was just being modest, lol. But he always used the metal thumb pick.
The lady is Susan Warford. They eventually married, and they stayed together, too. That's no mean feat in the entertainment industry.
Johnny had different bands, and different lineups in the bands over the years, that was pretty fluid. His brother Edgar, former members of the McCoys (I'm serious! But they were great), it goes on and on.
It was good seeing this, and I like watching people hear Johnny for the first time. Subbed!
Now you should check out Johnny and Edgar Winter “Tobacco Road” live, fantastic!😊
Gibson firebird I've seen johnny 7 times he was always my favorite in the 70s johnny was also an albino and his brother edgar.
Edgar and Johnny Winter are/were amazing musicians. I think my favorite was when the two played "Tobacco Road".
I performed with my band The Greatest Show On Earth at the 1970 Montreux Jazz & Rock Festival. On the bill was Johnny Winter - his amazing performance at that gig is available on a video if you search for it.
Oh wow, I bet that was awesome! I’ll have to look it up
@@setonhillstudios Jonny Winter 1970: th-cam.com/video/ULB4QQ9vvko/w-d-xo.htmlsi=9wt3afhUd9H8M-kg
It was the thing to do, get together at someone's house, watch the midnight special....have all the necessary recreational items...FIRE
Check them out playing Frankenstein live. Edgar Winter is phenomenal.
Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll have to check it out!
Yes!
Thats his wife Suzan Warford/Winter. If you look on the back of the Still Alive And Well album the last word are Thanks Suzan.
Still alive and well great album and song
John Lennon wrote that song. That’s Johnny’s wife. Gibson Firebird. His band were The McCoy’s who had the hit Hang on Sloopy. That bass player was also Stevie Ray Vaughn’s years later .
YES!!! Someone finally checking out Johnny. I listened to his album"White Hot & Blue" a lot! Saw him live in the 80s. He was a bit out of it.
Glad you enjoyed the video, he was incredible!
Johnny Winter and Edgar Winter they are brothers Johnny is the oldest and he is a Bluesman
He also played killer leads he always used a thumbtack. Check out illustrated man
"I'm here for it. here we go. Let's get into it". ...AD begins.
That’s unfortunate ad timing 🤣
@@setonhillstudios - Just funny...Nice video! I like that Johnny Winter.
He was known as the fastest left hand in the business.
Saw him with Robin Trower opener late 80’s. Killer show. Johnny also spent awhile in Muddy Waters band. Very unique style of guitar.
Oh man, him and Trower in the same show 🤯
I saw Johnny at the Pickle Barrel in VT in 1991. So great.
I bet it was awesome!
Johnny sounds amazing on that Firebird. Is that a 12-string? Saw him in '73 in Toronto, maybe shortly after this. Firebirds then too. I'll always associate them with Johnny, no matter how many other kinds of guitars he played through the years.
Funny that the drummer behind the bassist also wore a fur hat. Wonder if stage-left had an air-conditioning vent stuck on high?
😊🤙🏼🎶❤️🍁❤️✨️🕊
Haha 🤣 You might be right! Such a killer player and so much fun to watch! Thanks for dropping by!
I believe that Johnny often played a 12 string with only 6 strings installed, including the Firebird. He needed or used the extra width between the strings to accomplish his guitar playing techniques as I understand it.
Check out the album: Johnny Winter Captured Live. Great album & Highway 61 is the best slide guitar playing you will ever hear
He has a lot of great tunes. Rock Me Baby, Roll With Me, Mojo Boogie, Mean Town Blues are a few. He is from Texas, as are a LOT of great bands and musicians including ZZTop, Stevie Ray Vaughn and his brother Jimmy Vaughn, Clarence Gatemouth Brown, even Steve Miller, and the one who influenced them all and more, Les Paul.
Another good slide guitar player, though probably not as hot a player is George Thorogood, listen to Delaware Slide by George T. He plays with a different slide tone, but very dirty gritty sound. Sounds like he has strings made of sandpaper and a slide made of gravel!
watch the liver version with his brother Edgar from 1970 doing Tobacco Road
He's always been my favorite saw him around 15 times. Like the studio version better myself, also It's My Own Fault is a good one from Live Johnny Winter And, check it out especially if you like blues,
I bet every performance was incredible! I’ll have to check that one out for sure!
@@setonhillstudios thanks, also I may have recommended Rock and Roll,
If you like Johnny Winter, you should give a listen to his brother Edgar.
That Gibson Firebird sounds KILLER
Johnny was known to turn the bass on the amp all the off and dime the trebs and mids.
Oh wow!
Dude, no offense, I can't believe you never heard of Johnny Winter or his music. He's up there with the legends. You seem to know your guitar riffs and what guitar it is. An albino blues, rock guitar player and great songs I don't know man but I'm glad you're listening to him now.
That guitar is a 1963 Gibson Firebird.
The woman is Johnnys wife.
Gotcha! Thanks for the info!
Still alive and well and saints and sinners two great albums from johnny winter
Appreciate it! Definitely have to check those out!
Is that a 12 string? The girl with cowbell probably sang lead vocals on many 🎵 songs...
Oh man, Corey, you stepped in it now. Johnny and his brother Edgar are two extremely talented individuals. There is a song they both play together on called Tobacco Road. It's a blues cover and these guys knocked it out of the county with this one. Edgar is a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist, IDK if Johnny is or he's a wizard on the guitar only, but it will blow your socks off. I wish you and your cousin could watch it together. What is his name, btw? I left you a link to the live performance.
th-cam.com/video/af0rV6dli_o/w-d-xo.htmlsi=29hPTiFMUYX1pv3a
Lot of folks recommending that one, definitely gonna have to check it out! His name is Steven!
@@setonhillstudios Thanks brother. Steven and Corey. IDK if I'm spelling it right, but I enjoy the heck out of your guys' channel. I love watching people who know what they're talking about cuz I learn things. I don't play but have always wanted to bc I think music is fascinating. So just picking up on some lingo is pretty cool. I'm an old metal head from the 80s era but I enjoy all kinds of music but certainly rock is my fav by far. Disclaimer: Rap is not music, therefore I do not like it.😁
@@snakeinthegrass7443 Thanks so much for the kind words and bonus points for the correct spelling! 🤣 Means a lot that you are enjoying the content and it’s never too late to pick up an instrument! Hopefully soon we are going to start posting some live performances of some tunes! 🤘🏻
He is an albino and it's a Firebird
Ah ok, I couldn’t recall which was which on the firebird and thunderbird thanks for heads up! I didn’t realize he was albino!
@@setonhillstudios Bass thunders. Leads burn.
Johnny Dawson Winter 3rd
Johnny and his brother Edgar were born with albinism, they have no melanin which is why their hair is white. They couldn't go out in the sun which gave them a lot of time indoors to practice.
Johnny himself just wanted to be a Bluesman. He basically walked away from Rock stardom. Because of that, he's Not (certainly by the general public) spoken of amongst the all time greatest guitarist of that era conversations he belongs in. Which would be he along with the 3 Yardbirds alums etc, as well as being 1 of the Axemen Jimi respected most, as they jammed together often a Steve (Johnny's manager then)Paul's "The Scene" in The Village.
His second album and first album on Columbia was pure blues from a pure white guy who happened to be albino. From that album's liner notes; "Johnny plays basic blues. Color them black. Real black and nothing else. Color them black black. Johnny looks white. Color him white. Real white and nothing else. " Whether you react to any one of the tunes on that excellent album or just listen for your own sake, I'm confident you'll enjoy it. My fav track happens to be his cover of BB King's Be Careful With a Fool.
I bet that’s an awesome one, thanks for the suggestion!
try montreux 84 concert that was when he switched guitars johnny b goode for speed or mad dog for fun any song has solosi smell trouble jon plays the harmonica while playing bass dig deep rabbit hole goes very very far
Wait till you hear his brother Edger!
Oh snap!
Mark three Gibson Firebird. He has a bunch of them some with whammy bars. Great guitar
IF YOU LIKED THIS VIDEO, YOU REALLY NEED TO CHECK OUT THE SONGS..... IT'S MY OWN FAULT AND JUMPIN JACK FLASH FROM THE CD JOHNNY WINTER AND LIVE .....AND CHECK OUT THE SONG HIGHWAY 61REVISITED FROM THE JOHNNY WINTER CAPTURED LIVE CD. YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED.BOTH OF THOSE CDS ARE A MUST LISTEN FOR ALL ASPIRING ROCK AND BLUES GUITAR PLAYERS AND EVERY SONG ON BOTH CDS ARE GREAT. KURT FROM MAINE
Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll have to check those out!
@@setonhillstudios Johnny Winter And Live and Johnny Winter Captured Live are in my opinion his two best cds. I have been playing guitar for 58yrs now .... am 69yrs old now. Johnny Winter, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, JImmy Page, Richie Blackmore and Roy Buchanan were probably my biggest influences. Johnny had one of the most unique ways of playing the guitar. Check him out some more. You'll see what I mean..... and thanks very much for the response. It's much appreciated.
Johnny was legally blind
Wow!!! 🤯
It's called the 1970s.
If you love this , check out Joe Bonamossa
Joe is incredible, we’ve got a few videos of him on the channel!
The top line Firebird by Gibson was the #7 or Mark 7 has incredible pick ups three bad boys or was it four whammy bar the unique styling is by design the company hired an automotive designer that was the inspiration for the 59' Caddy Coupe de Ville the 62'-66- Corvette etc. The guitar centerpiece neck feet board are one solid piece and the huge fairing sides are added screwed n glued. It has a very cool slide sound to it . Very cool sounding guitar He's the first non African American guy who was entered into the Chicago Blues Hall of Fame. Best buddy of Muddy Water Born Albino with brother Edgar they cannot go into the sun
