Rory and his band were stunning. For years, if I encounter any guitarists, I always ask "Do you like Rory Gallagher?" If they say "Who". I know instantly, that they know nothing.
Interesting, if you don’t like the style of one guitarist or the technique “you know nothing…” I know how good he was as a guitarist. A guitar teacher who’s never seen this? Rory was one of a kind. Check out his acoustic “Out on the Western Plain,” his Coral sitar on “Philby.” He was innately a bluesman, and he also played slide guitar, mandolin, harmonica, and saxophone. That beat-up Strat? My first trip to Ireland I walk into a bar in Cobh in County Cork and ordered a pint of Beamish from the barmaid. When I stepped back from the bar a photograph over the transom of the bar caught my eye. Lo and behold was a huge autographed picture of the guitar hero of my youth, Rory, a full sweat, head back, trance like. A quick glance to the right and another photo of Phil Lynnott in his heyday as well. Just sat there at the shelf across from the bar smiling and remembering .
Le 1° grand guitariste que j'ai pu voir en concert, inoubliable. Quel talent, quelle simplicité, quel mec. Je l'aime toujours et Shadow Play me tue encore et encore. Bravo Rory.
Rory the Irishman with a gift. This is my favourite video of Rory's too. So playful. He gives me a lump in my throat every time I see or hear him. I bought a couple of albums in the 70s. Great to play at parties. He had the blues in his bones and he loved his guitar. His voice too was absolutely unique and expressive. And his song writing. God Bless you young Rory. You were a beautiful young man with a cute wiggle in your walk, gone too soon but you were true to yerself. No wonder you ate so loved.
My friends older brother turned us on to Rory Gallagher in 1977 when I was 13. I bought and listened to Top Priority and Live with amazement and later saw the band at the Ritz in NYC and Harpos in Detroit. His acoustic playing was every bit as amazing as his electric playing. Great voice and natural showmanship. Love it! Thanks for the reaction video.
Gerry McAvoy is still going strong. Saw his Band of Friends a few months ago, early 2023 in London. Brilliant night out. And yes, he still does the power stance. My favourite Rory performance, which you can get on TH-cam is ‘Do You Read Me’ on the BBC show ‘Rock Goes to College’. Whole range of his outstanding abilities on display. Check it out!
Saw Rory play 3 times in Sydney. Once let a guy from the audience up to sing halfway through Shadowplay. It worked really well. That's the awesome Gerry McAvoy on bass. Listen to Bullfrog Blues on the Live In Europe album. Rory a great musician, plays sax as well (listen to I Can't Believe It's True). No tremolo arm, his vibrato and bend + vibrato are 100% fingers. His right hand a fucking machine. Listen to intro to Moonchild, when he right hand taps on to a fierce bend at the 17th fret and the guitar just fucking screams. Good lord!
Unbelievable performance! Not sure there's many other instances where 3 chords on loop can get the hairs on the back of my neck to stand up like that. There's a small section at 11:20 where the drummer hits the bell on the ride takes it up a notch in spite of the fact that nothings else changes, and it's just awesome!!
I have never seen Rory live! But i have traveld to Ballyshannon 4 times. Roryfest is the best festival in the hole world! Sorry for not comming this year.... i'll be back!
Saw Gerry McAvoy (the bass player) just before the Covid lockdowns, this guy then was and still is today a legend, a fantastic bass player and a really nice guy. His band was really nice and you got a feeling for how unbelievably awesome it would have been with Rory on stage, too. Everyone was missing him that evening, but Gerry and the band gave their best and they did well.
One of the greatest moments in rock history. I remember watching this live on tv on the night with the little cassette recorder recording the sound from the speaker as we didn’t even have a vhs recorder back then. Brilliant. RIP Rory
You nailed it! I liked this band the most, Gerry was always with him. Ted (R.I.P.) the most solid drummer. I was born in 1950. Was always with him, even in Taste days.
I was only ten years old in ‘73 but I remember my older brother listening to Rory. Tatto’d Lady was cranked up often when our parents left the house. Wasn’t he the Rolling Stone’s first choice after Brian Jones died? I believe he had just inked a tour in Japan and couldn’t get out of it so Mick Taylor got the nod. He is another great one that gets overlooked.
I saw him in Atlanta in the winter of 81. I was with Tinsley Ellis who I went to school with and another musician. We were psyched to see him but we couldn't stay it was so loud. It was literally twice as loud as anything I've ever seen. My ears never were the same.
Finally Rory! Thanks for this appreciation of one of the greatest Rock performers ever. As a little boy who had just picked up a guitar for fun I watched Rory opening up for an all night live show on German TV in 1976. I was infected with the guitar virus from that night on. Only a little later I saw Dickey Betts on that same TV program. These two guitarists changed my life and I am so grateful for that.
FINALLY! Someone who gives Rory the appreciation he deserves! He was a guitar superstar in the 70‘s and is so overlooked today.
Absolutely!!

He controls the feedback with the Guitar on the ground the Playing is Fantastic but that is the icing on the Cake
Thank you for this! Rory was one of the greatest players of his time and deserves more recognition like this
Gerry McEvoy was an unbelievable base player. Always gave it everything
loved Rory, died way too young
Le 1° grand guitariste que j'ai pu voir en concert, inoubliable. Quel talent, quelle simplicité, quel mec. Je l'aime toujours et Shadow Play me tue encore et encore. Bravo Rory.
guitariists love rory and tommy bolin just great and great great lovely people
Rory the Irishman with a gift.
No one could ever play as raw and pure as Rory. He custom built his strat for his own unique sounds. The Irish Legend..
How can you not seen this video??
I have the DVD
Good lord!
His solo's regularly had a few Irish scale progressions in them.
Listen to his music and read the book Rory Gallagher The man behind the guitar by Julian Vignoles, Collins Press ,Ireland.
THAT bass player is kickin THE shit out of this!!!
OhMyGod, he's blisterin it!
Gerry mc avoy, with rory 20 years, and to think rolling stone called him a hack player,he is one of the best,RS have no clue.
Saw Rory three times in Uk in the '70s. FANTASTIC stage act!!!!!
Most exciting guitarist I ever saw. Norwich Gala Ballroom 1970!
You're easily one of the best teachers on TH-cam
I have never seen Rory live! But i have traveld to Ballyshannon 4 times.
Roryfest is the best festival in the hole world!

FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY... RORY ... the first guitar god !!!!!! I love Rory BAD PENNY
Gerry McAvoy was probably the only Bass player that could keep up with Rory....I can only imagine what kind of force Rory was to deal with on stage
4:31 I love that you mentioned Gerry McAvoy the bass player too. Rory is fantastic, so humble and talented and a great vocalist too
One of the greatest moments in rock history. I remember watching this live on tv on the night with the little cassette recorder recording the sound from the speaker as we didn’t even have a vhs recorder back then. Brilliant. RIP Rory
One of a kind...Who ever saw him live...never forgot..him😉👌👌👌
You nailed it!
I liked this band the most,
Gerry was always with him. Ted (R.I.P.) the most solid drummer.
I was born in 1950.
Was always with him, even in Taste days.
19:25 Rory didn't need security when he went out into the audience. We were all headbanging, before headbanging was even a thing.
Yes , Rory has been overlooked big time
Gery on bass was a machine .....his solo on the live version on "bullfrog blues " is amazing.....love it .
Brilliant player. I saw him at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 and again at Reading a couple of years later.
I saw him in Atlanta in the winter of 81. I was with Tinsley Ellis who I went to school with and another musician. We were psyched to see him but we couldn't stay it was so loud. It was literally twice as loud as anything I've ever seen. My ears never were the same.
Gerry was absolutely flawless as well. As good a band as there ever was.
Been waiting for Rory as long as I've been following you. Great little improv at the start too
Finally Rory!
