The really sad thing is Rob Pilatus would have been so happy to see this happen to him and Fab. It’s such a tragedy that cocaine and alcohol completely killed him and he only got to see the world hate him for being in Milli Vanilli. From everything that’s ever been revealed about Rob, Milli Vanilli’s success was pretty much the only truly happy time of his whole life.
Frank Fran was behind the entire thing, his previous act was Boney M which also was very popular 70s act, and also highly visual stage performance with lip sync, these guys were basically Boney M 2.0 for the 80s

In Europe, it was extremely common to have other people provide the image for a band or singer. On one of the album covers, it said “visual performances by Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus”. This was considered scandalous in the United States.
Yes, Americans were largely unfamiliar with this. Up until Milli Vanilli, the biggest American hit single by a lip-syncher had been “Tarzan Boy” by Baltimora and Americans largely still don’t even know that the performer in Baltimora was a frontman. Outside of America though, Rob & Fab was never credited as the singers, nor were the studio singers. On the American records, Rob & Fab were credited as the singers, because their record label in America initially bought the ruse that Rob & Fab were the singers. The American record label completely went along with it ultimately because ultimately music is a business.

Silly comment. Every generation does this with older music. I remember kids being super into Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd when I was in high school in the late 90s.
If only people had known that in 2024 almost nobody uses their true vocals. Most “artists” lip synch to a sound track at concerts and use auto tune in damn near every rap or hip hop song. They were just ahead of their time.

Their producer tried to continue Milli Vanilli with the actual singers as The Real Milli Vanilli. There was a second album already being recorded when Rob & Fab were fired and exposed. But it didn’t get much traction overseas and no American record label wanted to release it. Their producer then ended up re-recording it with a new group of singers he put together called Try N B, but there was no interest really anywhere. The music had gone out of style. As for Rob & Fab, they did release a studio album in 1993 but no major record label would sign them and the one that did went bankrupt shortly after the album was released. Apart from one great appearance on the Arsenio Hall Show, the record label didn’t have enough money to print record units or promote the Rob & Fab album and it ended up selling only 2,000 copies. There’s actually a documentary and a biopic movie about the duo out now.
