Even better than going where other people aren’t going, is going where they say not to go (minding obvious safety hazards.) Specifically, go where that one crusty old dude that only speaks in double negatives tells you not to go. “Don’t never go over there, there ain’t never no fish over there.” That’s where I go.

My wife does that then pull out a nice bass where no one is fishing and with simplest lure. We was at a small lake close to house that NOT known for bass fishing. She nailed a 16" bass on a black/white grubb, I'm like really?

On protecting the fish you catch, consider getting angled needle nosed pliers, and good quality nippers that can easily cut apart even heavy hooks as a last resort. Larger fish can really inhale soft plastics even if you’re careful, and I hate to see a 5 lb bass injured or killed unnecessarily. Good pliers and nippers can be expensive, but most of us already spend a lot on lures and gear. Crimping down the barb is another option to make unhooking faster and safer for the fish, especially if you’re not in a tournament.

    Good video!
I can't disagree with anything you said. A positive message!
I'm relatively new to kayak fishing, and I'm 55. So it's never too late to change and adapt. To me, that's what my fishing has become. Yes I have my favorite lures, but I have stuff rigged and ready to use that I have never tried before.
I was just put on a river yesterday that I had never fished. There were some locals in a flat bottom, and they were killing it, but mostly small fish. I watched and paid attention, for about 15 minutes. Then I headed across some shallows where they couldn't go and found a deep channel. 3 casts later I had caught 3 quality smallmouth over 16", and my buddy caught 1 around the same. We tried the channel one more time and moved on. Great part about river fishing with a friend is covering a lot of water, because you have a drop vehicle and a take put vehicle. We did 6 miles yesterday, caught 31 smallmouth and had a great time, and that's just scratching the surface of that six miles.
Leaving the area debris free: We actually cut a new path to a creek we really enjoy, because the old path was treacherous. We came across a lot of trash, including a microwave. We packed it up and hauled it out. Now our fellow fisherman have a nice wide clear path, that won't result in injury. Absolutely, have at least one good friend to fish with, makes all the difference. They will help you become a better fisherman and vice versa. I'm more knowledgeable about lures, and techniques. The guy I fish with is the one who got me into kayak fishing. Since, we have both caught our PB's on our favorite creek.
Again, great video, and great advice!

This is a really good video my favorite rule is “leave no trace” so many people leave stuff all over fishing spots now and I’m like if you spent enough time on the water you would have more respect for nature I’ve had to leave one of my favorite spots cuz a moose jumped in the water and started swimming around I’ve seen bald eagles grab fish right out of the water. . . I just wish more people wanted to keep these places pristine I’m always picking up fishing line and empty bait bags and other stuff anyway keep makin the videos Wendell and I’ll keep watching them

Also, from the mouth of a marine biologist (not me, but a friend), the slime coating on a fish DOES help with immunity to diseases, as fish do not have an actual immune system. HOWEVER, fish can extremely easily replenish this slime coating. I'm talking minutes, literally. You can handle a fish with dry hands, even microfiber cloths if you wanted, and it won't hurt the fish necessarily.

    • @wendellfishing

The ONLY time I don't wear a pfd is when I'm very specifically in the large pond near my house (big enough you need a kayak to get to the middle) but the water, save for a couple spots, is shallow enough to stand in and have your upper chest onward out of the water. Also, there's always a buddy who's really good at swimming with me, so even IF I got in a bad predicament, he can still cut me loose or get me out.

Hey bro recently found your channel and have been really enjoying your content. I'm new to kayak fishing and have learned a lot from watching your channel. I normally fish with a fly rod from my kayak and was wondering if you knew of any good channels that focus on fly fishing from a kayak. It presents some different challenges then fishing with a baitcaster or spinning reel and i'd love to hear some other people's solutions.

Pull so much trash out of the water. Broken off fishing line too, sometimes get lucky and there’s still a usable lure/hook on the end. When bank fishing I carry plastic grocery bags in my tackle bag. So many fisherman leave so much of their trash on the bank. Make the rest of us look bad.
