    Ex-audio engineer here: Adding holes to a box changes the resonant frequency of the box. You can see different formulas for this by searching for porting and venting specs for speaker enclosures. How this might affect switch casing is that the frequency might be lowered depending on the venting. Since lower frequencies require more power to make the same sound pressure (see how multi-driver speaker setups have higher powered amps for the lower frequency drivers) it seems like it has the affect of reducing the overall sound pressure. Moving the frequency down also probably moves it out of the more sensitive-to-our-ears midrange into lower frequencies. There are probably a lot of tricks from acoustic design and the audio world that keyswitch manufacturers could adapt.

      so more holes, bigger holes = quieter?

    • @JustSomeGuy009
      @JustSomeGuy009 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      However there's more at play here because the switch has s just 1 component or enclosure in the system. You have areas where the switch housing contacts or would "vent" sound waves. Like the top of the housing under the keycaps, the area under the plate but above the PCB (typically containing dampening material now), and of course below the PCB but inside the lower section of the case. Since most enthusiast keyboards today are designed with rather large cases relative to the components inside you end up with a very large echo chamber make from probably ABS plastic or aluminum in premium cases. I imagine most of them create these large cases because they like the look (they must since many are custom designed keyboards they could create in other ways) or they want a particular angle of the keyboard without having the empty gap created with legs. It's more like tuning a speaker, that's inside a furniture cabinet with the front door open, inside your room. And without any DSP or digital methods for room correction.
      But yes, you are right the keyboard scene could learn a lot. Most want what they call a "thoc" sound, which is just a rather stupid way of saying they want to increase low frequencies while eliminating the higher frequencies they refer to as "ping" (and also reduce scratchiness which is really something from course parts rubbing in the switch). They should try to direct as much noise into the largest enclosed area they can, possible utilizing traps (walls to bounce sound around) and a large port hole on the bottom or back of the case (with some proper spacing). Slightly different approaches of you wanted to eliminate all sound of course.

    The Whisper tactile audio in the first half was quite overboosted, but the comparison audio was more reassuring.

    I will never understand switch pricing. These have custom molds, and factory lubing which you would think add more manufacturing complexity, yet they're mad cheap. How does that work?

    • @MakerMods
      @MakerMods  2 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      So I know these smaller companies like meirun and I’m assuming haimu as well are literally hand lubing their switches; that’s why they’re able to use a thicker lube with any precision! As far as the molds… I’d have to agree with you, haha! I actually have a friend whose family business was making keycaps for NASA and his explanation as to why injection molding is so costly is because you have to pay a highly specialized guy to create the mold… in his case, his grandpa is the only one in the company who knows how to precisely machine the molds, so when he passes they’ll have whole lines of machinery for injection molding that will be pretty much useless… if I had to venture a guess, the creator of haimu isn’t factoring in the cost of creating the molds into his own switches, as the word on the street is he can create the molds himself?

    • @oatmilk9918
      @oatmilk9918 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MakerMods injection moulding is relatively cheap to run, but has very expensive up front costs. The tooling can be thousands of pounds (UK)/dollars (US), but once they are made, they can be used to produce tens or even 100s of thousands of components. and that's the main deal with injection moulding: its a batch manufacuring technique and is only a good investment if you are going to make thousands and thousands of the same thing.
      if this guy is making his own moulds, then that massive upfront cost may be reduced so the main costs would be materials and labour (which are cheap in china, sadly)

    Ok, I'm trusting you! I just bought a set of the Haimu Heartbeat Linears for an Epomaker TH80 that I am building...
    What I really like, and what convinced me to go for these, is that the silence is in the sophistication and elegance of the DESIGN, and not in add-on dampeners that may eventually wear out. Incidentally, I have Gateron North Pole 2.0's on another recently completed keyboard, and they are also pretty quiet - AND a major part of their design update was to not only add what appears to be a silicone doughnut at the bottom of the housing, but also to create an exhaust port adjacent to it. As your demonstration in the video shows, there IS something to having exhaust ports at the bottom of the housing to aid in silencing the switch. Hmmm...
    I'll report back after I get this project completed!

    This is some clever design, I'll have to try out the linear version! I was also considering testing the newly revised TTC Frozen V2 as well, which uses a unique (but not so different) method of high durometer silicone damping, with two separate dampers on the housing as opposed to on the stem, and early reports were it was noticeably less mushy compared to conventional silent options. Cheers!

    • @MakerMods
      @MakerMods  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ooh I might have to check them out, but tbh the heartbeats are smooth, silent, and… I can’t imagine a silent switch being “better” than this, haha!

    • @timtuckercom
      @timtuckercom ปีที่แล้ว

      If the TTC has the damping in the housing rather than the stem, would it be possible to come up with a frankenswith that combines the TTC housing and the Haimu stems for something that's even quieter?
      (update: it looks like the top silencing on the TTC is embedded in the stem & the bottom housing silencing is just an elastomer in the bottom of the stem hole -- something that you could in theory reproduce yourself via the old trampoline mod)

    • @flockofwildcactus
      @flockofwildcactus ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timtuckercom Yeah I was a bit incorrect on that, the damper for the stem (top out) looks like it fits into a groove on the stem and the damper for the bottom is a small disk that fits in the stem guide (bottom out). I've still not tried these so I'm not sure if the length of the stem is shorter to accommodate for that, but I'd guess another standard-length stem would work with the bottom housing and the stem from this would work in a different housing when looking at the explored diagram. But yes, it's a variation on existing and old methods to dampen the impacts like the trampoline mod (damn that takes me back, haha). Also way back when, imsto sold 1mm silicone balls that fit in a standard MX stem guide to dampen bottom out as a more uniform solution, so I suspect this is the same but better/stiffer. It seems with the Heartbeat switches, which I have tried since this comment, the integrated stem 'damping' cutouts are on the top and bottom, so IMO there's no need to introduce silicone...they are super silent as is. I hope this design catches on for us silent switch users!

    • @flockofwildcactus
      @flockofwildcactus ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timtuckercom Sure thing! If you've not tried them yet, look into Gazzew Boba U4 as they have a pretty pronounced bump and have a softer silencing silicone, basically no need to mod other than if you wanted to hand lube (there is a special procedure to do this). I think what you're really after though is a Topre (HHKB, Realforce or Leopold) or Topre-clone board (like NIZ, but I've not tried these before) based on your preference. I use a Realforce at work, where I'm 100% typing only, and it's hands down the best option such that I no longer have any other MX tactile boards. Prior to that I was using a board with retooled MX Browns that had thin o-rings for work, but that was like 10 years ago now lol. Otherwise I prefer linear switches for all-around use (combined typing and gaming for example) but Topre is my favorite tactile experience personally. I'm looking forward to more refined Alps clones to come to market one day, as the original ones were unique and good in their own way (especially the tactile ones) on some vintage boards I've tried.

    I'd love a combination of this with the jwick semi-silent switch:
    - nylon top and bottom housings
    - 2 big holes on bottom housing like the Haimu silents
    - top housing has those grooves like in the oil king to mitigate north pole interference
    - up-stroke dampened stems like the jwick semi silents
    - 63.5g springs
    that way we could still have the 'thocky' bottom out albeit quieter and a silent top-out sound. Do this with a cute color scheme and a price less than 50 cents a switch and it'd be my endgame office switch I think

    These Haimus as well as WS SIlent Tactiles and most likely other silents with that same design (like Skyloong Glacier or Epomaker silents, for example) have another issue and that's noise on bounceback when the stem hits the top housing. They don't have silencing on the upstroke like Durock Shrimps and some others do, so they're silent on downstroke but the upstroke is noticeably louder...

The Outemu Silent White is doing a good job at being silent but it's so much gummier and scratchier than the other ones I've tried, but they were the cheapest silents I could get. IMO the best I've tried so far is the Durock Dolphin (now that I have the budget for it, my 90-set is on the way!), because it's also whisper-quiet without the mush and scratch of the Silent White.

      Sadly the Outemu Grays are really a miss in the feel department. The Silent Whites and Silent Grays do their job at being quiet, just as good if not better than the Durocks, but they just don't feel great to use. They're the cheapest though, that's a win for them.

      @@MakerMods Thank you very much My Heartbeats actually just arrived and it's insane how silent they are. I can barely even hear a bit of spring compression. It's like I'm pressing air.
      I want a 75% for the arrow keys and F-row.
      Budget was hopefully less than €200 and this gets there, but shipping cost a whole lot for these parts :(.
      I think I overpaid for it all, but I went with a Keychron V1 case w/knob (I hope the plastic case won't ruin the silence).
      For keycaps I just got some Pudding Doubleshot PBT. I'm not certain how it affects the sound so I picked them for looks.
      Is this a good combo? Keychron V1, Pudding Doubleshot PBT, Haimu Heartbeat
      Are there any mods you would do to this board?(I watched a lot of keyboard content these past 2 days...)

    • @Greennoob2
      @Greennoob2 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Update: pretty crunchy sound. Still quieter than my friends' prebuilt razer and corsair keyboards. I should have lubed the stabalisers. The knob doesn't get used because I never got it setup correctly. DO NOT go for 75%. You won't find a keycap set that makes the right size keycaps for the 3 keys right of the spacebar. I made it look pretty normal but it's not perfect.
      Some incredible budget options came out this year anyways. get those

    What are your thoughts/guidance on how to best lube these? Do you recommend avoiding lubing the legs? Any special considerations? I know the typical silent switches with rubber dampeners can be easily ruined if not lubed correctly, so curious what to do here

    • @LastSecBloomer
      @LastSecBloomer 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, as with most tactiles, don't lube the legs. If you're not satisfied with factory lubing, wipe the lube off and lube just the side railings and maybe the springs if there's a ping...
      Also, you usually use thinner lube for tactiles. If you don't have something like Tribosys 3203 or 3204, use the usual 205G0 but only a thin layer. More lube messes with tactility so it's about finding the right balance between smoothness and tactility...

      HAHA! I might be down to give it a try once I can get through my review queue… but to be honest, taking the cap yellows as an example I don’t think the reduction in sound is worth destroying the switches if you’re really looking for pure silence :P
      Edit: and as for lube leaking, it shouldn’t be an issue if you aren’t gooping it in there. A light even coat is all you need, and in any event getting lube on your pcb isn’t going to really harm it. On our topre boards, we smear 205g0 on the PCB before installing the domes! :D
