How Air Traffic Control Works

  • The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) oversees the enormously complex Air Traffic Control system in the United States. Thanks to the FAA, this video goes behind the scenes at Air Traffic Control to places never before seen by a TH-cam Channel in order to understand How Air Traffic Control works!
The airspace around the busiest airport in the world seemed like a good place to explore How Air Traffic Control Works, so that’s exactly where we went: Atlanta, Georgia. There, like most of the rest of the world, Air Traffic Controllers manage the airspace.
As important as an Air Traffic Control Tower is, there’s a lot more to How Air Traffic Control Works than just that. In this video, we’ll explore the whole system in order to understand how Air Traffic Control Works.
Special Thanks to the FAA, particularly Kathleen Bergen, Torrance Branch, Kenny Smith, and so many others. This was an incredible opportunity to see How Air Traffic Control Works.

You should also do a video on Airline Flight Dispatchers. Back in the day, when I was in sales, I got a tour of Jet Blue's flight Dispatch floor in their Queens HQ, and sat with a Dispatcher, and he showed me what he did. Really interesting. They're communicating with the pilots all the time, along with ATC.

I’m an Air Traffic Controller in Nigeria. Maybe you should come down here and see how we do a less sophisticated but more stressful type of control. It’s called Procedural control. I like to call blind control, where we have nothing but our pen and paper strips and keep a mental picture of traffic based on positive position reports from the pilots.

My Dad was an ATC at Memphis from 1960-1977 when he retired. I remember as a child being able to go to work with him when he worked midnight to 8 am shift. It was a fascinating experience to say the least. An extremely stressful job that so many people have no clue what all goes on. This was a nice peek into it but the profession deserves so much more of a deeper look. Would love to see more videos explaining each position in detail. Awesome vid. Just to clarify the sequence a bit --
Ground - handles pushback from the gate and taxi to the runway.
Tower - gives permission to enter the runway and clearance to takeoff.
Departure (TRACON) - handles the aircraft as it climbs away from the airport.
Center - handles the aircraft at high altitude as it cruises towards its destination.
Approach (TRACON) - handles the aircraft as it descends towards its destination.
Tower - handles the aircraft in the landing pattern and gives permission to land.
Ground - directs the aircraft from the runway to the gate.
Sounds complex. Is complex. But works very well most of the time.

As a former Controller at Washington ARTCC, I enjoyed giving tours when folks would come in wondering what our building was and what we did. You have provided an incredibly simplified version of the process, but since each piece can be very complicated and detailed, most folks just want the very basic understanding that the Center Manager offered. I often got detailed in my explanations and watched the eyes glaze over. You've provided a great insight to a very complicated system that the public no longer is free to see as it was when I was working The public is often comforted in knowing that the airplane does not move from the gate until a controller authorizes it. And, that plane is being given direction for everything it does until it is authorized to head toward it's gate after landing. The pilot is ultimately responsible for safety, but the controller is exerting positive control over the planes every movement. Good job in your brief overview. Very nicely done.

your absolute best video of all time. Awesome behind the scenes and access of the best but perhaps most stressful job in the world. If I could go back in time to when I was 22, I would definitely have tried to be an ATC

Another awesome video! I remember touring Oakland Center in Fremont back in 89. All the controllers were very professional with explaining the various aspects of their job. ARTCC’s are very interesting places.

Funny that this video was recommended for me just an hour after I took a tour of an Air Force Base tower haha. Great video, I'm really hoping to someday be an FAA controller in a major airport's tower!
