Inside Europe's Busiest Air Traffic Control - Amsterdam

  • Amsterdam is Europe’s busiest airport, in terms of movements and top 3 in terms of passenger numbers. In 2018, it handled over 70 million passengers, with over 500,000 movements. I visited the Air Traffic Control Tower and Radar Centre in Amsterdam, to find out how the air traffic is managed in one of the busiest European Airports.
The ATC tower controller explains all the working positions, runway configurations and movements inside the ATC tower at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. I was given a behind the scene tour and enjoyed some awesome plane spotting views up in the 101m tower.
Then, I visited the LVNL Radar Centre. A controller explains how the radar controls work. In fact, once the plane leaves the gate it will remain in contact with the tower and many different area controls until it lands and arrives at the gate. The visit gave me a great insight as to how Air Traffic Control works in today’s crowded skies.

I was at Schipol in January last year, awesome airport & huge!! I live near CWL & love watching the planes ascend/descend into it. Especially the big one's 777 & 747's going in for repair/upgrade! It's official, Sam has THE dream job and position, that anyone in the aviation industry would love. He gets access to all types of aviation perks, from the cockpit, to the ground. I swear, it's not even a job at this point, it's a passion that he gets to enjoy and I'm glad he does.
I'm pretty sure it's not all sunshine as the videos show, there's got to be a lot of behind the scenes and extensive hard work to be able to show us all the material. Just the politics in aviation alone must be a nightmare, just to even ask for permission to get access to some places.
Sam, seriously, I'm glad I've subbed to your channel. You always bring the most interesting aspects of aviation and show the hard work that's put in by everyone, especially, the underappreciated staff. They help make everything run so smoothly, so passengers may be able to have a good flight, let alone be able to fly. I really appreciate the work you put in and keep it up Sam!
