It's a shame the calibration was a bit off, but it's a great opportunity for more computerised skateboards like it! He could definitely add more things to it once he's got it down, like ollie height and distance traveled 🤔

I think the question is why would you want a computerized skateboard in the first place. It's kinda interesting but you're adding weight and possibly affecting the balance of the board for a gimmick that isn't really practical for any real purpose.

I just had an idea of how you could DIY hack the calibration! If it's possible to dismount the electronics from the board, you could re-mount them at the proper angle with a wedge/spacers/washers.
Basically, just tilt the entire electronic assembly to a sweet spot. Maybe then, it'll be more sensitive to trigger the timer to start at the moment the wheels leave the ground.
If it's possible, I hope you guys try it!!
..Unless you ask Mr. Rad Lab about it first lol.

I'd move the sensors right up on the nose, or, try some large cruiser wheels on the back so the angle is increased when you manual. Overall it's awesome and someone will develop boards with chips in them soon enough. 🤘🏻

  •  ปีที่แล้ว +6

Maybe the gyroscope needs to be calibrated as the one in your phone? I mean the compass, when the phone says you need to turn the phone along the 3 axies. Then putting the board on leveled surface and turning on. IDK, it was fun tho :)

    • @JTKK9

its more like a problem with testing it, when you add forward monentum, force working on that gyro is no longer perpendicularly to the ground

I wonder what the device is using to calculate the distance between the board and the ground because my first 2 thought were (1) that the Braille floor is kinda shiny which might be bad for infrared sensors, (2) the transparent "mud flaps" that cover the top of each device seem slightly concave which might be redirecting a laser if the sensor is using one??
P.S. If it is measured by some sort of sensor using the distance from the ground and not the angle from the ground, then putting the sensors between 2 adjustable guides, (almost like adjusting a car seat forward and back) would make it perfect for MANUAL calibration.. that ones for you Gabe ;)

There’s an easy enough fix for this it y’all still want to try it:
Take the whole device off and remount it opposite the way it’s mounted now but in the same location, and then ride the board backwards from what you’re currently riding. The break angle is the issue less than the board angle. The sensor needs to be physically made aware that it’s tipped, and it’s not making enough contact inside.

  • @cphVlwYa

If he only wanted to figure out manual time it probably would've worked better to put two load cells under each truck instead of using an accelerometer. Then it'd be really easy to detect when all the weight was on a single truck during a manual, regardless of how high it was

I wouldnt say the calibration was a problem. While the idea is nice it is not trivial. The real challenge is using the accelerometer to find the angle on a skateboard. The skateboard is really always moving somewhere. The accelerometer readings are garbage. You need to throw some more filtration and physics for it to really work. You really also need to use the angular sensor.
