Praise the Lord I’m not sure if you’ll see this comment or not but I have moved with my husband to Ghana West Africa and I’m truly getting into the homesteading life. I am mid 50s and trying to find hair care products here for my hair as you could imagine is challenging, I’ve always wanted to do homemade hair care and I really appreciate the video. I have watched it before but I was in the states and it’s always easier to just go and put it off and grab the store block items. I have to wash my hair every day because needless to say it is super hot and I sweat a lot here, I really appreciate the details in this video and thought I would take time to let you know. I definitely will be checking out the other links you have posted and will be making my own vinegar again. I tried it in the states after I watched your video and it came out, thank you for all you do. I really appreciate you and you are my one go to Channel for all things natural and homesteading besides the Holler Homestead. May you continue to be blessed beyond measure in Jesus name.

I am so embarrassed, I just asked you on your video of today 3/24/21 about mixing vinegars, why you use vinegar for your hair, and this video has all the answers. That is why I watched your videos more than twice. You provide so much information, which is amazing. I am a beginner, and everything you share is brand new, so it does take me a minute to get it. Thank you.

I'm a cosmetologist but I sure don't know natural hair care very well at all. Before hair products were made to clarify hair, we used baking soda to remove residue left from hairspray, hard water and even when blondes turned green from swimming in a chlorine pool. It is very drying and I recommend using it only for those clarifying reasons for most people. By the way, one of the cheapest ways to buy baking soda is to look in the pool chemical section at Walmart. The bags are bigger than in the baking section and a better price too. I put my apple cider vinegar in a spray bottle and when I saw one of the bottles in your video, I thought it looked like the peri bottle they gave me in the hospital after I had my babies. That would be a good option for the vinegar rinse because it has a spray effect rather than such a strong squirt effect. The Vitacost liquid peppermint castile is ok and half the price of Bronner's but I will go back to Bronner's when I finish the Vitacost, I just don't like it as well and I have to use more. The tip to put the small soap pieces in a jar is a great idea! Thanks for sharing!

Once again Heidi your video comes at the perfect time! I tried to make cranberry mead for my MIL. She has repeated UTI’s but won’t give up her nightly small glass of wine. So anyway I tried to make her some mead. I work out of town 5 of 7 days and I forgot about it. I went to bottle it and it had turned into the most amazing smelling vinegar! So hair rinse it is!! Thank you so much for all the hard work you do to bring us so much helpful information! God is good! All the time! 🙏🏼

I want to make soap as you do, but my husband has been hesitant to switch from his Irish Spring to Lye based. I mentioned Dr. Squatch soaps and as time went on he came around to the thought. He wasn't willing to try homemade but started talking about getting some from them (Dr. Squatch). At Christmas, I ordered a sampler box of 11 bars. He's loving it!! I also asked him to stop using his Neutrogena Therapeutic Shampoo and use the bar soap for his hair. He's loving it!! I also am using Lye based soaps. I was using castile soap on my hair and as you said the texture of my hair was awful. Now that I'm using this bar soap on my hair it's beautiful! It's calming down a lot. Thank you for all of these great suggestions. Things are getting better around here while we watch and learn for you and Patrick.

@@RainCountryHomestead, so the correct term would have been lard based? See?! Always learning from you! While I have your attention, what was the other powder you suggested in your jet fuelled latte, in place of the ashwagandha?

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@Minnesota_Mama_Bear That is where it gets tricky because not all natural soaps are made from lard. The ones I make to sell are all vegan so no animal products. I usually only use coconut oil in those. Not really sure what the best term is other than "natural" soap. I do not know what kind of fats are used in some store bought soaps.
Maca is the other powder I do use in that blend, if that is what you mean

I love Healing-Scents Toxin Free Shampoo/Body Wash in Citrus Fresh which is a castile soap. I love fruity scents. Yes it doesn't foam up. You don't actually need foam to clean. The vinegar rinse is conditioning enough for my scalp but not for my ends. My ends love a Shea butter based conditioner daily (it likes to be treated like it's curlier than it actually is; top half behaves like straight hair, bottom is loose waves) and a weekly deep conditioner with a heat cap weekly (need to get a new one as my old one is falling apart; think I'll upgrade it to one with flax seeds instead of gel packs inside of it). Chagrin Valley Soap and Salve sells empty squeeze bottles (they also sell soaps for many different issues, plain oils for conditioning, vinegar rinses, and herbal hair rinces) and Bubble & Bee Organic sell foam spray tops. I just use an old conditioner bottle to hold my vinegar rinse. Some people even use Neti pots for that. Other natural brands I love are Morrocco Method and Hairprint. My favorite though is Jessicurl as I love their Island Fantasy scent (blend of coconut, vanilla, and citrus), it makes my hair super soft, some of their products make my hair even curlier than it is, and some humidity protect. It's especially designed for wavy and curly hair.

Heidi - great info as always. I think I understand now why when I rinse with vinegar, my hair is lifeless and flat and even thinner looking than normal (I have short wavy, thin hair that is dry). I've been using the vinegar straight! I haven't been diluting it at all, but when I do that, it looks terrible. It looks great when I just use my Kirk's Castile bar soap alone, but the FULL strength vinegar just strips it down to nothing. Would diluting it make it look less flat and lifeless? Your hair is so gorgeous - hard to believe you ever had thinning hair from thyroid issues! I'm sure that's why my hair is so thin now (along with my eyebrows)! Thank you for all your open honest teaching 🥰

Great video! Ive been trying a few different shampoo alternatives, but none were great. Baking soda is actually about 60 cents a 50 g package here! I have medium everything hair length, thickness, amount, dryness etc. I wash once a week with storebought shampoo with zink. Nothing else needed, but i found that with natural shampoo bars, my hair felted together when i slept, so i had to wear my hair in braids or it would felt up quickly. Then i added olive oil and then it was too heavy lol. I tried a few different ones , but ive got hair like yours in that its so wavy its just at the point its almost curly, so if i wear it up a lot it looses its shape! Ive got more tinkering to do to find something that works. I coukd maybe get away using dry shampoo or something. Id love to be able to use something i can source from my property

    Hi Heidi
Regarding the baking soda. The soda and vinegar combo will burn your hair to shreds. This solution is highly corrosive. It's used together to clean burned pots and also acidified car battery terminals. Vinegar alone should be used, not as a moisturiser but as a quick cleanser.
For a moisturiser you should try a Fermented seeds mix....Rice and all kinds of spices... These are rich in essential oils... Crush crush or grind the dried ingredients, then Ferment for 7 days or so to bring out the oils, then boil it just to kill off the probiotics. Put it on for as several hours and then rinse....
FYI, consuming too much vinegar can cause dry hair too... This happened to me...
I ground a whole mix of seeds and spices, boiled it and steeped it for 45 min, and then strained it through a cheesecloth. The oils that came about was fantastic and I used this liquid to massage my hair, even my entire body, and it was soooooooo moisturising! U can try this.....

I would have to charge quite a bit for an oil blend but they would be easy enough for someone to blend themselves if they were willing to purchase the oils separately

Vinegar is such a blessing, lol!
I usually wash my hair with Bronner’s or Black soap (I would like to make my own soap at some point in the future though!) and for some reason it leaves an alarmingly dense film on my scalp (I have VERY curly hair that dries out quickly, and I use oil to help keep it moisturized) However, like a miracle a 50/50 diluted Vinegar rinse breaks it down and rinses it away.
I almost wonder if I can clean it with a vinegar rinse alone, as when I wash my hair sometimes I feel like the soap doesn’t do much except make my hair feel gummy =___=
I’ve tried using bentonite clay once but I didn’t care for how long it took to get it out of my hair. Maybe if I watered it down it would have been a more pleasant experience!
