Im using Karolinas platform for my own benefit, sorry:D In the beginning of September 8-9, in England there is a big WWI happening at the Highclere Castle, which is the estate where they film Downtown Abbey. Im travelling there from Finland and plan to spend a few days in London and see exhibitions about fashion history. I was wondering if anyone else is planning to attend the event or in London at that time and would like to meet up because I'm travelling alone and would like to meet other vintage interested people!

@@copperrose4376 hello, classical time period and over all Ancient Greek nerd here, I might be able to help, take note that I’m no scholar, but I have some knowledge to offer So as for fashion history, there’s actually not that much of a huge deal around it as is in the eras Karolina likes, but it still existed. The main way we can find clothes and styles is through artwork, mostly in pottery and statues. Fashion for the rich aristocrats definitely existed, but I’d say clothes were way more functional back in that day and age. The only extravagant details are normally in rich ladies clothes, and they are normally just colors accessories and expensive jewelry. But! The average person (starting with girls cuz It’s just easier for me) would be wearing a dress called a chiton or a Peplos. They are surprisingly easy to make with just a large sheet of fabric and a few pins at the shoulders (I may or may not own a few diy ones myself...) so the Chiron was just your basic dress, but it could be paired with shawls and capes. As for men, I’m not that educated but I do know they wore shirt like shorter dresses with either nothing or a large draped cape over one shoulder.(typically old men preferred this style lol)Some guys also wore a draped skirt almost? Don’t know the word but it basically just looked like a skirt. But yeah I could go on, but my suggestion is weirdly enough, look on Pinterest. What I like to find is pictures (drawings) of the clothes with dates and how to make them, and sometimes you can click the link to find where the pictures came from, some websites are really informative. Anyway, I wish you luck on your journey! I too once had this fascination so I totally get it! Btw, song of Achilles is a great book good choice lol, if you like the author I recommend her other book Circe.

I can find a lot about men’s outfits in the official documentation I have been searching through but my next project will now be a women’s Ancient Greek dress thing, I wonder your opinion on Greek mythology as I absolutely love it especially with its evidence of community’s of people who may now be discriminated against being explained in magical and beautiful ways like the lgbtqai+ community and if you do like Greek gods who is your favourite? And if you don’t like Greek mythology why is that? Just curious

I laugh at the Aladdin outfits and looks cause they got nothing to do with arabs it looks more like Indians but still also not really.. like Aladdin is an Arabic iraqi story it’s supposed at least to show how Iraqis actually look and used to dress at the time.. I still love Disney movies a lot just wanted to say that cause you asked about this subject lol..

I think it is wonderful that you like both the more "traditional" vintage eras like the 1940's, and the lesser appreciated eras like the 1700s or the Renaissance. It was so fun to hear you talk about it with your great sense of humor. :D
I wouldnt call the 1700s a lesser appreciated era. There are tons of blogs dedcated to it and some of the most popular costumer bloggers focus on it.. American Duchess....has a popular vintage and historic shoe line. But yah. I loathe the 40s and Regency but I like Karolina lol so I even watch the regency stuff. I also love the 1600s, not sure why but I do. I like the weirdo posing gowns seen in Lely portraits...which, nobody really ever wore lol. Glamour shots of the 1600s.

I wish I could wear beautiful clothes from the 50's or Victorian era... But not only I'm broke, I'm also from Brazil so if I ever dress more than 2 layers of clothing I would probably die a painful death... Wait, is it *really* a bad idea? 👀 At least it would be a elegant death
Carol BRRJ I went to a steampunk/Victorian costuming QnA session and their advice for Victorian fashion in hot weather was to use light fabrics and skip the corset. The skirts aren't as hot as they look because depending on the decade you had a crinoline or a bustle holding the fabric away from your legs and allowing air flow. I also take a hand fan everywhere I go. The cheapest way to get historical fashion is to learn to sew, unfortunately (I hate sewing 😂). If you can find/make affordable fifties fashion, I say go for it because the skirts are great for keeping your legs cool.
those were the two reasons why I never truly got into Lolita fashion, no matter how much I loved it as a teen! not only it's so expensive, but Brazil's weather is just not adequate AT ALL (love my country, but god, the weather...)
The heat really isn't as bad as you might expect. I do American Civil War reenacting, while our hottest event may not be quite as hot and humid as Brazil but it can get pretty miserable, one day at Gettysburg this year was about 95 F with like 80% humidity. But the biggest thing is wearing only natural fibers, cotton, silk, wool, they wick the sweat away and help keep you cool. The crinoline keeps the skirt off of your legs so you get a breeze. Wearing a chemise , corset, drawers , knee high stockings, crinoline, petticoat, dress and leather boots I wasn't anymore uncomfortable that I would have been wearing a polyester shirt and jean shorts. But it is expensive, and I'm a grad student so I have to space out my purchases, because I can't sew...at all. There are also the option for sheer dresses in the summer and they are super light weight. I wouldn't recommend skipping the corset though. It's what gives the silhouette that is so important to a good Victorian impression.
I love 1890's/Edwardian fashion- from the shirtwaist/skirt combo- so classic and academic looking, to the boater hats and the incredible 1890's women's capes and coats. I also love Early 1910's evening gowns (like Rose from Titanic and S1 Downton Abbey) and 1930s evening gowns (which look like liquid silver poured over the body)- both absolutely stunning. I have a special love for 1660's dresses which I first saw and fell in love with when I watched The Man in the Iron Mask as a child! Honourable mentions to 1760s/70s (18th century perfection) and 1800/1810s (because Jane Austen).
Didn’t frizzy banks become fashionable because they burned their hair with newly invented curling iron‘s. So then they were like ‘yeah well make this a thing.’
i actually got into historical fashion after discovering the BBC historical farm series (tales from the green valley, victorian farm,...). i haven't even seen/read anything pride and prejudice related :p
pay1370 same! Though I’ve actually always had a strong interest in history (specifically domestic history), and that’s what pushed me to start dressing vintage.
early Renaissance (1490s-1510s) in venice is something im pretty knowledgeable in! i did a whole project on it in school and made a costume with the research i did

Lorenz Wehrle Legal age of consent was 12 for girls (& 14 for boys), but you were definitely an adult by fifteen - you could be betrothed at any age, but you couldn’t marry before then- however, just because that was the minimum- doesn’t mean it was the average.
@@OcarinaSapphr- well in a time period when you could die by age 30..if you made it that far....12 wouldn't seem that young. But yeah it's bad. Read a comment somewhere on why there were so many wars in those times. Most kings became king in their teens/20s. And can I just say, boys in their teens and 20s are not the most mature regardless. I live in Florida and have been to several American civil war reenactments as a kid and ever since I was younger I've always been obsessed with civil war era dresses, so 1860's is one of my all time favorite era's. I've also recently come to enjoy 1770's fashion because of the tv shows I've watched and videogames I've played from that time period.
I totally agree with you about how fashion kind of went meh at around 1790's late Georgian to Regency dresses, I love the 1770's - 80's like Elizabeth Poldark's costumes in the first 3 seasons. I just love how the waist is at the most flattering length, the just below the elbow sleeves with small ruffles, not too big like they were earlier in the century. And of course the gorgeous hats!

My personal favorite fashion period is from mid 1820 - late 1830. Generaly, everything connected with biedermeier: fashion, interiors, furniture, paintings etc. I'm a huge fan of the so called gigot sleeves, but only in biedermeier interpretation and context.
I like gigot sleeves but loathe Biedermeier furniture. The tones of the wood make my head spin, I hate lighter woodtones. I really dislike bustle so I tend to prefer the 1820s and 30s to the later parts of the century, even though I prefer the decor from the latter.

I too find those vanice fashions really interesting, when they used to wear those weird masquerade masks which actually originated of their belief that those masks helped to protect them against the plague..yeah weird^^ Also the makeup from that time was soo interesting i would love to hear you talk about that, as well as victorian mourning attire which was a huuge part of their lives. I feel like..because of the super high death rate back then people must have spent majority of their lives in mourning attire and a mourning-obsessed queen probably didnt help either^^ I hope you might consider something like that. I live in a very hot country so I like looking at fashions in Latin America. Right now I’m looking at baroque era freed black women. They have some very pretty muslin dresses

The channel The Ultimate Fashion History is an incredible reference for basically any period. The videos are actually lessons taught at a fashion institute by a legit professor. Plus it’s just super entertaining and fun to watch.
I love 50s fashion!! It's honestly easier than I thought it was going to be. I watched one of your videos about the era and I'm going to the military ball in an outfit I've put together for that particular era. Being Ftm transgender, I'll probably turn heads (since no one has ever seen me in a dress) but I'm really excited to debut my first 50s outfit to the world! I tried to make sure everything is accurate (I have an amateur fashion historian much closer to me who gives me one-on-one help, but they were inspired by you hehehe) and I'm really excited for my dress to finally come in!! (Sorry for the format, I'm on my phone lol)
Listening to this closely I noted that the USA version of some of these eras leaned toward poverty including the puritans and the pioneer look. A Quaker-ish “plain” look with sturdy colors and soil defying fabrics. Thank you!
So I used to reenact the middle ages (Elizabethan era) with my mom. We live in Arizona, USA. During the summer, in full Elizabethan garb, we would be out in 115 degree (Fahrenheit) heat. You, are so brave, to wear period clothing in that kind of heat. I will never do it again.
I love the tailoring in English 1840s fashion-especially on the necklines. I think it creates such interesting details. But I'm also a fan of large sleeves. I think they're so absurd that I have to enjoy them. Pagoda sleeves are just fun to me.
This is so amazing this discussion, so unique, men's fashion hasn't changed much but I loved the breeches from the 1700s and the jackets, wigs from back then. But really my fav men's fashion 1780-1830 my fav women's fashion 1792-1820

hahaha I used to be obsessed with 1930s, but later discovered I’m more into later 1930s just because they look more like 1940s. I quite like the look and the way they play with accessories, but I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite decade. masculine fashions from 1930s (Marlene Dietrich style) are to die for ❤️
I hate the 40s and am obsessed with the 30s. The charmeuse, satin and velvet gowns!!! I love the jewelry from that time and the hair and I love Wallis Simpson...weird I know lol. I think the 40s (for me) is a bit too...IDK...mainstream? Its like a 'go-to' for most vintage lovers and I think its boring. I like the 50s because its kinda like the 18th century of the 20th century if you know what I mean, extravagant and weird. The 40s is stoo simple for me. I do like the hair though.
Caligula Longhbottom I think there is definitely something to pick up in every decade. With the overlook we have nowadays, we can just choose what fits us best in the vintage style, and wear a 30s skirt with a 50s jackets and 40s hair. They didn't have that option back then. I also have a soft spot for Wallis, for some reason ^^
I actually dont like ANY of wallis' clothes, except her wedding gown and the lobster dress, ironically enough. I don't see what all the fuss is about as 'greatest fashion icon of all time' or whateve, but i think shes fascinating and i like her jewelry. i do think she just tried to be very different from the queen and queen mother and adopted the more streamlined styles. i also really liked her hair in the 30s. i also think they shoulda engraved HRH on her gravestone after letting harry marry meghan markle LOL or made them duke and duchess of windsor to finally heal that rift but as always, they just pretend to be progressive and still curse wallis under their breath but thats a long diatribe!

By the "pre-Polish" you mean from the Partitions period (1795-1918), right? Independent Poland was off the map for 123 years but it actually goes back to the 10th century before that, so the actual "pre-Polish" stuff would be some early Medieval, old Slavic clothes. 😉 BTW even during the Partitions Poland was technically not completely gone for all that time because there was briefly the Douchy of Warsaw (Napoleon's client Polish state) and then the Kingdom of Poland as a part of the Russian Empire, that for about 15 years had some actual large autonomy. It's complicated. Other than that I completely agree!
As much as everyone dunks on the 1970s, there was a lot of that 'masculine womenswear'. I have my own super selective favorites; I only like the 'golden years' in the Weimar republic. The 1920s as a whole are not my favorite.
After watching a two-part hour-long video about 1970s fashion. I slowly learned to appreciate the high fashion designs over the retail/mainstream editions as the designer versions are more creative and diverse and they didn't overdepend on polyester or any other new synthetic fabrics.
Actually, when I think of "VICTORIAN" I do think of 1840s - 1860s decades fashion xd when I think "Sherlock Holmes" or "late victorian" or "steam punk" then I think about bustle era ;)
I'm designing Chekhov's Three Sisters set in 1890 on the American frontier (like... South Dakota) right now 😂 the sleeves! The menswear! The ruffles and accessories! I don't have much interest in wearing it, but it's so much fun to work on.
I actually love the 1830s. I didn’t at first but then something in me changed and I saw the absolute joy of the ridiculous sleeves, skirts, hair. You need them all together for the proper effect. I’ve also been liking the late 1790s. Those round gowns that make you look a bit pregnant make me happy.
I am a 17th century reenactor. Not my favorite era but I love my role/job there as soap and candle maker. I m very much into working women's clothes almost every area tbh.
I learned very much about historical fashion even if you just talked about your favorite decades haha and being French I laughed a bit when you said that we were much more frivolous than British people at that time because I think it is the opposite now 😂 anyways, I wish you good vacations!
Thats interesting, I like the other side of the countries fashion, Espania, Austria, La France more. For me the best time is the time of Goya, and the best women outfit I have seen is from his painting of the wife of Juan Agustín Céan Bermúdez.
I always loved 1770s and 1780s probably because of Amadeus, the film itself is not the most historically accurate but it's gorgeous to look at, and the rococo fashions hold a special place in my heart. Regency Era for me is complicated because some people consider the 1820s as Late Regency and other people do not consider 1820s fashion as Regency, I think the proper term is Romantic Era from like 1800s until 1830s and my favorite decade is 1820, there's just something about the perfect balance between neoclassicism and rococo revival that is so beautiful it's not over the top like 1830s and the waistline looks very flattering when is not empire, just above the natural waist. I do not like the sleeves of the 1830s but I do like them in 1840s, the fashions of Queen Victoria are simple and elegant but I do not like the earth tones, I prefer white dresses, the french and upper class fashion. 1850s I did like it a lot when I first researched fashion history but now I do not like the crinolines I think they look fake it's not the same like wearing a lot of petticoats, the hairstyles and sleeves again not my thing. 1860s I prefer the later 1869 for the high waistline like the 1820s and 1870s because I love how the huge skirts become into a soft curved bustle and later the Neorococo in 1872 with the hairstyles looking more loose and flowy, the square necklines, fitted sleeves again, robe a la polonaise skirts and the music of Tchaikovsky in 1877 and the years to come, but. I hate the 1880s I don't like the shelf bustle and the silhouette is very curvy which I do not have, but I did really like the fashions of Clara Clayton in Back to the Future III, it's incredibly historically accurate and the colors are lovely, but overall the whole decade I don't like. I don't really like 1890s and 1900s but I really like 1910s again is kind of a transitional era between pigeon silhouette and waistless silhouette and it works beautifully, the hair is not gibson girl bouffant or flapper bob cut, it's this feathery bang that looks very flattering on me and a lot of people and lately I've been doing research on Art Nouveau and I love the fashions, also Titanic I love the dresses and hairstyles and hats. 1920s I hate it why is there no waist? Why are hair and skirts so short? 1930s I like the sleeves only. 1940s I like the hairstyles only it's 1950s but longer and reminds me of Princess Aurora. 1950s I like the new look but with long skirts kind of like Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday (not the blouse and skirt), the gold dress is something I would love to wear. 1960s I used to like but now I don't, it's probably the miniskirts which became socially acceptable to show that much skin and I don't like them. 1970s are too casual and I think that's where fashion history should end.

Chopines are very practical in the rain. With a big skirt especially I'm grateful to have them to keep me from dragging my clothes through the mud.

You should totally work in film as a costume designer or consultant that helps the period films be more accurate. It's cool how knowledgable you are.

those were the two reasons why I never truly got into Lolita fashion, no matter how much I loved it as a teen! not only it's so expensive, but Brazil's weather is just not adequate AT ALL (love my country, but god, the weather...)
The heat really isn't as bad as you might expect. I do American Civil War reenacting, while our hottest event may not be quite as hot and humid as Brazil but it can get pretty miserable, one day at Gettysburg this year was about 95 F with like 80% humidity. But the biggest thing is wearing only natural fibers, cotton, silk, wool, they wick the sweat away and help keep you cool. The crinoline keeps the skirt off of your legs so you get a breeze. Wearing a chemise , corset, drawers , knee high stockings, crinoline, petticoat, dress and leather boots I wasn't anymore uncomfortable that I would have been wearing a polyester shirt and jean shorts. But it is expensive, and I'm a grad student so I have to space out my purchases, because I can't sew...at all. There are also the option for sheer dresses in the summer and they are super light weight. I wouldn't recommend skipping the corset though. It's what gives the silhouette that is so important to a good Victorian impression.

I love 1890's/Edwardian fashion- from the shirtwaist/skirt combo- so classic and academic looking, to the boater hats and the incredible 1890's women's capes and coats. I also love Early 1910's evening gowns (like Rose from Titanic and S1 Downton Abbey) and 1930s evening gowns (which look like liquid silver poured over the body)- both absolutely stunning. I have a special love for 1660's dresses which I first saw and fell in love with when I watched The Man in the Iron Mask as a child! Honourable mentions to 1760s/70s (18th century perfection) and 1800/1810s (because Jane Austen).

Legal age of consent was 12 for girls (& 14 for boys), but you were definitely an adult by fifteen - you could be betrothed at any age, but you couldn’t marry before then- however, just because that was the minimum- doesn’t mean it was the average.

I live in Florida and have been to several American civil war reenactments as a kid and ever since I was younger I've always been obsessed with civil war era dresses, so 1860's is one of my all time favorite era's. I've also recently come to enjoy 1770's fashion because of the tv shows I've watched and videogames I've played from that time period.
I love the dresses in most adaptions of little women (especially the new BBC one? I think it's new)

I totally agree with you about how fashion kind of went meh at around 1790's late Georgian to Regency dresses, I love the 1770's - 80's like Elizabeth Poldark's costumes in the first 3 seasons. I just love how the waist is at the most flattering length, the just below the elbow sleeves with small ruffles, not too big like they were earlier in the century. And of course the gorgeous hats!

My personal favorite fashion period is from mid 1820 - late 1830. Generaly, everything connected with biedermeier: fashion, interiors, furniture, paintings etc. I'm a huge fan of the so called gigot sleeves, but only in biedermeier interpretation and context.
I like gigot sleeves but loathe Biedermeier furniture. The tones of the wood make my head spin, I hate lighter woodtones. I really dislike bustle so I tend to prefer the 1820s and 30s to the later parts of the century, even though I prefer the decor from the latter.

I love 50s fashion!! It's honestly easier than I thought it was going to be. I watched one of your videos about the era and I'm going to the military ball in an outfit I've put together for that particular era. Being Ftm transgender, I'll probably turn heads (since no one has ever seen me in a dress) but I'm really excited to debut my first 50s outfit to the world! I tried to make sure everything is accurate (I have an amateur fashion historian much closer to me who gives me one-on-one help, but they were inspired by you hehehe) and I'm really excited for my dress to finally come in!!

So I used to reenact the middle ages (Elizabethan era) with my mom. We live in Arizona, USA. During the summer, in full Elizabethan garb, we would be out in 115 degree (Fahrenheit) heat. You, are so brave, to wear period clothing in that kind of heat. I will never do it again.

I hate the 40s and am obsessed with the 30s. The charmeuse, satin and velvet gowns!!! I love the jewelry from that time and the hair and I love Wallis Simpson...weird I know lol. I think the 40s (for me) is a bit too...IDK...mainstream? Its like a 'go-to' for most vintage lovers and I think its boring. I like the 50s because its kinda like the 18th century of the 20th century if you know what I mean, extravagant and weird. The 40s is stoo simple for me. I do like the hair though.
Caligula Longhbottom I think there is definitely something to pick up in every decade. With the overlook we have nowadays, we can just choose what fits us best in the vintage style, and wear a 30s skirt with a 50s jackets and 40s hair. They didn't have that option back then.

I actually dont like ANY of wallis' clothes, except her wedding gown and the lobster dress, ironically enough. I don't see what all the fuss is about as 'greatest fashion icon of all time' or whateve, but i think shes fascinating and i like her jewelry. i do think she just tried to be very different from the queen and queen mother and adopted the more streamlined styles. i also really liked her hair in the 30s. i also think they shoulda engraved HRH on her gravestone after letting harry marry meghan markle LOL or made them duke and duchess of windsor to finally heal that rift but as always, they just pretend to be progressive and still curse wallis under their breath but thats a long diatribe!

By the "pre-Polish" you mean from the Partitions period (1795-1918), right? Independent Poland was off the map for 123 years but it actually goes back to the 10th century before that, so the actual "pre-Polish" stuff would be some early Medieval, old Slavic clothes. 😉
BTW even during the Partitions Poland was technically not completely gone for all that time because there was briefly the Douchy of Warsaw (Napoleon's client Polish state) and then the Kingdom of Poland as a part of the Russian Empire, that for about 15 years had some actual large autonomy. It's complicated.

As much as everyone dunks on the 1970s, there was a lot of that 'masculine womenswear'.
I have my own super selective favorites; I only like the 'golden years' in the Weimar republic. The 1920s as a whole are not my favorite.
After watching a two-part hour-long video about 1970s fashion. I slowly learned to appreciate the high fashion designs over the retail/mainstream editions as the designer versions are more creative and diverse and they didn't overdepend on polyester or any other new synthetic fabrics.

I actually love the 1830s. I didn’t at first but then something in me changed and I saw the absolute joy of the ridiculous sleeves, skirts, hair. You need them all together for the proper effect. I’ve also been liking the late 1790s. Those round gowns that make you look a bit pregnant make me happy.
I am a 17th century reenactor. Not my favorite era but I love my role/job there as soap and candle maker. I m very much into working women's clothes almost every area tbh.

I always loved 1770s and 1780s probably because of Amadeus, the film itself is not the most historically accurate but it's gorgeous to look at, and the rococo fashions hold a special place in my heart. Regency Era for me is complicated because some people consider the 1820s as Late Regency and other people do not consider 1820s fashion as Regency, I think the proper term is Romantic Era from like 1800s until 1830s and my favorite decade is 1820, there's just something about the perfect balance between neoclassicism and rococo revival that is so beautiful it's not over the top like 1830s and the waistline looks very flattering when is not empire, just above the natural waist. I do not like the sleeves of the 1830s but I do like them in 1840s, the fashions of Queen Victoria are simple and elegant but I do not like the earth tones, I prefer white dresses, the french and upper class fashion. 1850s I did like it a lot when I first researched fashion history but now I do not like the crinolines I think they look fake it's not the same like wearing a lot of petticoats, the hairstyles and sleeves again not my thing. 1860s I prefer the later 1869 for the high waistline like the 1820s and 1870s because I love how the huge skirts become into a soft curved bustle and later the Neorococo in 1872 with the hairstyles looking more loose and flowy, the square necklines, fitted sleeves again, robe a la polonaise skirts and the music of Tchaikovsky in 1877 and the years to come, but. I hate the 1880s I don't like the shelf bustle and the silhouette is very curvy which I do not have, but I did really like the fashions of Clara Clayton in Back to the Future III, it's incredibly historically accurate and the colors are lovely, but overall the whole decade I don't like. I don't really like 1890s and 1900s but I really like 1910s again is kind of a transitional era between pigeon silhouette and waistless silhouette and it works beautifully, the hair is not gibson girl bouffant or flapper bob cut, it's this feathery bang that looks very flattering on me and a lot of people and lately I've been doing research on Art Nouveau and I love the fashions, also Titanic I love the dresses and hairstyles and hats. 1920s I hate it why is there no waist? Why are hair and skirts so short? 1930s I like the sleeves only. 1940s I like the hairstyles only it's 1950s but longer and reminds me of Princess Aurora. 1950s I like the new look but with long skirts kind of like Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday (not the blouse and skirt), the gold dress is something I would love to wear. 1960s I used to like but now I don't, it's probably the miniskirts which became socially acceptable to show that much skin and I don't like them. 1970s are too casual and I think that's where fashion history should end.
