  • Sharing our experience with the new ARB Base Rack, fitted on our 1996 Land Rover Discovery.
The rack was fitted using 2 pairs of ARB Discovery 1/2 fitting legs for a Deluxe Rack (Part No. 3700090) paired with the M8 stud plates out of an ARB Base Rack fitting kit for a Nissan GU Patrol/ Land Cruiser 76 (Part No. 17900030).
4mm diameter washers were also used between the “fitting legs” and the Base Rack.

Hey Man nice video, I would Like to install on My Disco 1, but I wonder why the fitting kit for delux roof hack isn´t enough? Why do You need to combine from a Nissan Patrol? Thank´s

      Hey thanks!
Basically there’s a small plate which connects the “legs” of the deluxe kit to the base rack itself (which is different for the deluxe). So I used this part out of a 70 series LC / y61 patrol (vehicles using similar mounting legs) to compensate for this (I have the part number in the vids description).
I guess you could weld something similar yourself as an alternative solution but as far as I remember this little stud plate is cheap

I am looking for a roof rack for my Disco 1 so this was really helpful. Think I would do it exactly the same as you! I hope the combined weight on the roof doesn’t rip the top off - I think it’s only rated for 50kg and have heard of A pillar welds breaking.
Nice Discovery by the way - looks in great condition and is a really nice colour. Looking forward to more videos.

Cheers mate! Thanks for your kind words! Glad I could help! More videos are coming soon! 😁 Now, I have the roof rack (also considering the other one I had) and the roof top tent up there for about three to four years now with zero issues whatsoever. It will affect you fuel consumption and stability a bit. But other than that you shouldn’t have any issues… LR suggests 75kg on the roof mainly for stability purposes. Although it’s a good idea to not overload your roof rack as you want the center of gravity to be as low as possible. 🙂

@@overlandnexplore Good to hear. I saw in comments on other video that you weighed in at 25xxkg fully loaded - also good to hear, and I think you still have the rear seats in.

Awesome. I have been wanting this rack for a while. I emailed them a few weeks ago and they said it couldn't be mounted on my Discovery II. So glad you made this video. I'll be ordering soon. Which length rack did you go with?

Thanks mate! It sure can be done, of course the dealer wouldn’t officially approve it, for warranty issues, which is logical.
Although, you can use a few off the shelf parts to fit it (see description for more details).
The size of our roof rack is 2125mm x 1285 mm which fits perfectly.

Just watched your vid there mate... Great job as you've made up my mind and I'm going to go exactly the same route.
I don't suppose you have all the part numbers as trying to find the right ones for my own D2 is a bit of a mare...
    Can you help?
I've liked and subscribed there now... 😂

Hey mate! Thanks for the subscription!
Of course I can help! I also installed this same roof rack to my D2 paired with an alu cab tent…
I actually have the part numbers of the parts used in the videos description

I installed a base rack recently, but the lower brackets for my roof tent are too narrow for these wider bars on the rack. Where did you get those lower brackets?

    • @overlandnexplore
      @overlandnexplore  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hey mate, glad you brought that up, indeed the original tent brackets are too narrow for the wider bars that the base rack has.
What I did was to just fabricate longer brackets, practically a longer piece of metal, and used the bolts of the original ones. To be honest is just 4 metal plates with 8 bolts.
I believe ARB should have something available as well, but it’s also a pretty easy DIY fix if you have the time.

@@overlandnexplore thanks for the input, agree should be easy enough to fab song longer ones.
