    Thank you for the video! I just started looking for a generator to charge my batteries and was shocked by the low DC output ratings. So I came to you tube to see what the deal was and found your video. So to get the most charging power out of the generator the power has to be converted from DC to AC then back to DC?! Crazy!

      Hey Justin. It would cut out the middle man by just adding a decent charger inside the generator

    thanks for the information, fairly new to it. and totally makes sense to have one on hand for a crappy day. I was thinking of going the garage charger generator option for emergencies the info about the charging amps was very helpful cheers mate. its also effective at charging a power station. like the ecoflow delta 2 as it does it extremely fast and you can switch it off. I have solar, but on days where there is not enough sun to keep up, a portable generator is very useful. But I only use it to make up the shortfall, not to run all day.

    It's too bad that the "anti generator crowd" are so prevalent where you live. In my area in the US, such persons are much harder to find, as they often don't want to risk catching one of the myriad "anti" social diseases, such as "Pit Bull Slobber" or "Terminal Lead Poisoning".

    Hi, I have a 2.2kw petrol generator the instructions say i need to ground it, would i need to ground it charging a battery using a battery charger from the 240 outlet or if i was using an extension lead to power a device such as a domestic fridge or a microwave ? Thanks in advance.

      Hey Richard. Most folk (me included) either dont know or dont care about the risks of not having a proper earth. Some folk install RVD device to compliment the van's RCD. Youll find that most generators have an earth terminal which you can connect to a metal stake belted into the ground.

I have to reset my Enerdrive 60A charger's output to 40A in order to use my 1kVA Honda genset. I think from memory the Enerdrive charger requires 1050W set to 60A and 700W set to 40A

      Smart chargers can play well together, particularly during bulk charging. They can conflict with each other when in maintenance modes but at that stage your batteries will be 80%+ charged anyway

      @@Clip_It1 Kipor GS2000 & Honda EX500 gensets. Supercheap 20A smart charger. The chargers charging ouput is dependant each on combined generator output and charger output, and its best to pair them accordingly. Some chargers with higher output cant deal with generators that cant keep up ie if the charger requires say 750w@240v some chargers cant regulate a generator with a low output than that 750w. There would be waste and excess cost having a large generator only powering a small charger. A good example is a Noco 50A charger and a 1000w genset. Genset will have constant output of 900w and the Noco 50A requires 750w to charge at its 50A capacity. Noco are very efficient, so the smaller genset would be pefectly paired and 50A charging output is a good middle range

    Here's one for you. I've just installed my first VSR split relay. Before I charged bat for about half an hour every day straight off the 12v dc output and noticed with a very good battery the voltage would go up into the 16's and settle at 12.9. A good battery, or good enough may go up to 13.2 and settle at say 12.5, which is good enough right. Now, with the split charger wired in the voltage read across the top of the bat with the 12v dc hammering in has dropped to 13.3 which is exactly the regulation specification for the split charger.... but.... in reverse, I mean I'm charging the leasure battery that is wired to the starter but charging it just by connecting the genny 12v dc, so the current may be going through the VSR but not coming through it. So wtf's the magic of that? How can the split charger maintain the cross voltage at 13.3 when the dc is plugged straight on the bat?

    Good video mate. I'm a total noob regarding amps watts . I would like to run an electric trolling motor for 6 hours at top speed it uses 42 a and 500 w may you please give me some advice what to buy to do the job. Best regards Adam.

    • @Vagare
      @Vagare  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      42A means 42A per hour. The 500w come from 42A x 12volts. 42A is a lot of energy per hour. Power required is just 42A x 6hrs. To run it for 6hrs x 42A with an wet battery is not viable, even with lithium it would equate to 300ah which with Enerdrive is a 40kg $3000 battery. Are you sure its 42A ???

    Hi Vagare! Thanks for the video, very explanatory :) Could you tell me which generator is it? I'm planning on powering a 40A smart battery charger to charge a 400Ah battery bank (4 x 100ah batteries). I was looking at buying the EU2200i honda inverter generator, but seems it only outputs 18A and that wouldn't be enough... I was thinking about this setup, so that when i'm off grid I use the generator the least possible (say, charge the battery bank every 4 days), so it's less of a hassle and annoyance for me and everybody else. I'm new to this thou... does what i'm saying make sense?

    • @Vagare

      Hey Jose, the generator in the vid is a Kipor GS2000 (2kW). Youll need a bigger generator to run a charger at 40A. You could get around 40A per day into your batteries with a single 200w solar panel.
