You do not need to block welding spot as the camera sensor and screens are not able to reproduce the brightness. The narration is helpfull as most do not say anything. The chain seems close to the grass and might pickup grass, rocks and dirt, maybe a chain guard. I think electric conversion are great and using an alternator yet at 36V
Great project, great video. As you say, the downside of using a car alternator is that it consumes about 50 watts whenever the controller and motor are turned on. On the other hand, with a strong 12S battery you could be drawing 100a x 50v or 5kw so 50w doesn't seem too bad.
You could also up the voltage and put the rotor coil in series with the controller supply? Or you could have s seperate PWM controller for that field coil that gives no pulse width while throttle is at zero...
Question- Have you tried to eliminate the chain by using the shaft that goes through the alternator as being the drive axle for the rear wheels and maybe trying this same idea making it a front wheel drive or possibly 2 alternators to try and achieve 4 wheel drive.? Also make other things as well, I don't get how the Alternator becomes the motor, how you converted the ALT into the motor, I know it recharges the battery and once vehicle is started, then runs off the Alternator and keeps battery charging up. Does it have reverse as should be able to reverse it, the only thing is once the Alternator starts getting wet to much, it will die from water getting inside of it, you never try to get water in it and needs air to help keep cool to operate it and make last longer. Will an alternator make more electricity than it uses? I thought they needed a gas motor to spin them to then charge the battery. There is a good chance I am wrong because this stuff is not my focus, but it would seem that it would use more electricity from the motor than it would create, right? I dunno. LOL. Oh, and put a chain tensioner and a chain guard on that bad boy!!! Otherwise, great work! That thing carries your son very well, he's a big boy and it seems to have no issues! :)
Does the Alternator not have enough torque as a motor to reverse the gear sizing? You are utilizing more torque than speed. Therefore, more battery drain than unit of speed.
You need 2 alternators and 3 batteries with a simple switch to go between using 1 battery while battery 2 charges and battery 3 sits charged waiting to be used to make it work without issues.
If you reduce the rotor winding voltage then the motor will be able to spin much faster. More rotor current gives more torque but less gives more speed. From what i remember about 1-2A of rotor current is enough, which turns out to be about in the 5-10W range.
I think you can make it more powerfull by wiring it in Δ (Delta/triangle) then in Y (star), but that would require to detect each phase and conect end of it to the start of next one.
Sorry if im being a bit thick but what are the rotor wires connected to? They appear to go into the battery bag. Surely theyre outputting sone firm of ac. How are you converting that to stable dc to charge the battery? Also could you just disconnect it?
i forgot to mention that I used buck converter to supply 12V on the rotor. and for regenerative braking, that one of the capabilities of VESC or the controller i used.
@@albertnario4877 iirc alternators magnetism saturates at 5v, anything more is wasted as heat. Try using a brushed dc motor controller/esc on the rotor. The higher the voltage on the rotor the more torque the motor will make, up to the point that it can't overcome the magnetism, limiting to rpm. If you decrease voltage, the motor can spin faster at the cost of torque. That effectively makes the rotor esc act like a transmission. When you take off or need lots of torque, start at higher voltage, then as you reach the max rpm when lots of torque isn't needed, you can start to drop the voltage to allow it spin faster. Essentially like up shifting a transmission.
