    MORE ABOUT SCRAP MECHANIC!
    Here’s the deal: you’re a robot maintenance mechanic en route to your posting on a fully-automated agriculture planet. Your job is to take care of the worker robots as they work the land, sending the food they produce to the metropolitan planets. Thing is, close to touchdown your spacecraft loses control and crashes, but since you’ve got luck on your side (erm…), you survive! You’re stranded though, and at first glance you find that not everything’s quite as it should be. The Farmbots working the fields have gone crazy, and now there’s only one way to stay alive: using your quick thinking, your creativity and your wily knack of turning your surroundings to your advantage.
    Let’s pop the hood and see what’s on offer right now:
    Gender!
    Choose between playing as a male or female mechanic.
    Parts ‘n’ Blocks!
    Scrap Mechanic comes loaded with over 100 parts. Some with unique shapes and sizes, but all giving you the power to basically create anything you want.
    Interactive Parts!
    The interactive parts that let you put your creations in motion represent the very best and most exciting parts of Scrap Mechanic! With a wide range of parts and an array of functions from gas and electric engines to thrusters, sensors and buttons, you’ll never be bored with the tools at your disposal!
    Handbook!
    Your Mechanics’ Handbook is your trusty educational friend, with you from the start and dying to be read! Flip trough its pages at your leisure to learn the basics of building in a easy way.
    Connect Tool!
    The tool that brings everything together and makes it all happen. A must for any true mechanic!
    Lift!
    Lightens the load when building creations with physics in mind. Let it lift you - and your creations - higher!
    Sledgehammer!
    Whack loose parts and watch them fly. Smacking physics around with the hammer is great fun.

    I don't fault you for getting bothered with the grind. I've been working on a truck myself, a sizeable vehicle-but still, just a relatively small construction, and the grind already feels overwhelming at times (admittedly that might also be due to being built out of metal 3). An entire base like the one you're building
    Now I'm perfectly honest, I kinda prefer vanilla, even if the game is overly grindy, but that's personal preference on my part. I think to be able to point at the completed base and being able to say "I built that, with unmodded gathering rates!" is a nice feeling too. (As I had with the wall I built around my tribe's village in Ark.)
    It might be worthwhile adding your voice to the gathering rate rebalance discussion the devs have put out and seeing what that rebalance brings. I could probably go on a rant about how the game's strength is construction and how the current grind is more of a distraction from that than something that contributes to a sense of accomplishment-or how the current scarcity of resources discourages going for aesthetics in addition to pure functionality-but like you I'd prefer not to be overly negative.
    That said, as I've stated in an earlier video, I would not mind seeing some more content around grinding resources and the things you run into there. It might be inspiring for many mechanics to see how you manage those more boring aspects of the game.
    Edit: as for the elevator's speed. Have you considered staggering the piston extension on the controller (so the first piston expands first, then the second, then the third. Rather than all at once?) - I did notice for the controller the strength seems to be tied to the speed in some of my own builds using them)

    • @mikesheahan6906
      @mikesheahan6906 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If enough people use a "reasonable" gathering mod, the developers can incorporate it into the game. Why get stuck on vanilla, if what you really want is chocolate.

    • @krantzjr.6093

      Aecius the Philosopher that elevator idea would be pretty simple to set up with just a sensor, an and gate, and a switch. i honestly think a yeetificator ( a catapult) would work too.

    • @AeciusthePhilosopher
      @AeciusthePhilosopher 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Renzo Paez Thank you for those kind words.
      Mike Sheahan For me, playing vanilla is part of the fun, similar to how rebalancing mods (both reasonable and unreasonable) or new parts mods might be part of a fun experience for others. You do you, your fun isn't wrong, and neither is mine.
      I also feel that the argument of enough people playing a mod can go both ways, where the devs can say "well, there's apparently a perfectly good mod out for that. So there's no need for us to add that feature/rebalance anymore." I've seen devs go both ways on that. That said the devs have asked for feedback on rebalancing resource collection recently.
      Hail Kalashnikov True that. I can even imagine some more advanced logic and sensor systems being used to make the elevator go up and down at different speeds.

      @@PizzaCat1732 creative doesn't have all the other survival aspects such as raid defense and poi exploration. If the physics were better and the game didn't get wonky with complex harvesting builds, I'd say leave it. But since that greatly limits what you can do, I think turning up the material harvested is the best option. It shouldn't take 4 hours of grinding for 30 mins of content. Creators are going to get burned by that and turn away from the game.

    • @IRMentat
      @IRMentat 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@texag1517 game tend to get wonky with over-complex builds and a lot of the builds I see are putting absurd amounts of strain on single "rod"/pivot points with no backups/redundancies.
      it's a fairly good physics system overall, the math on some of the functions (pivots under high-load, bearings under high-torque, suspension under any non-fixed object) just doesn't seem to cap out or reduce the calculation cycle time so it's over-calculating numbers that should be hit a cut-off/fixed maximum value (functionally, component unusable) at that point.
      simply put, people are applying 6-15 multiplicative/exponential calculations on objects most likely designed for 3-4 and the engine is handling it remarkably well. how many other games allow for a single hinge you can essentially pivot your entire base upon while maintaining a real time physics sim?

    2. The sketchy physics around bearings and pistons. (And other things).
    3. The insane lag (poor optimization).

    I am using a light gathering mod. It just gives random amounts between 1 and 3 of certain items like oil, clams, and milk. I'm also using a mod that lets you craft component kits. Might sound broken, but you still have to grind for the mats to make them, which requires circuit boards. With as rare as component kits are, the amount of them you need is way too high.
    The amount of materials needed to build anything in this game is excessive. The small blocks make for pretty builds, but you need thousands of them to do anything. And the game does not make resource collection easy, what with the wonky slippery tires, and goofy game breaking physics glitches that cause builds to explode whenever there is a bit of lag.
    If somebody makes a mod that makes pistons and bearings actually hold together and be as strong as they SHOULD be, I'm going to be all over that.
    I say, mod away. The game requires it until the devs fix the issues.

    I got to the point where I had all the guns, 5 good vehicles, all the food I could eat, and can do everything easily. I changed some script stuff to give me unlimited materials, and I'm having a blast building a cool house in the middle of a lake.
    This game's end-game is "grind forever to build any cool shit", and that's straight up not fun for me.
    Imagine if you didn't have to grind mats. You could have done the bridge in a day.
    I can't speak for everyone else, but if you want to "cheat" in a non-competitive game, I'm not gonna be mad.

    Wanted to make a pitch for your consideration. I’m not building my base on any sort of cliff but you sparked an idea; a Ferris wheel style elevator. Having 2 cabins on opposite ends of a bearing would allow there to always be ride waiting for you at either end. They would also counter balance each other making the effort put to create rotation wouldn’t be as intense. It would also mean there aren’t 10 individual pistons creating 10 separate structures that slow the game down. Food for thought, keep up the good work.

    Youre completely right about the resource thing, i dont really like to use mods in these kinds of game, but SM is just too grindy, i've always liked this in games, but this game its just ridiculous.
    Oh, and actually, idk if it'd work, but maybe try divide the pistons, like, 5 on the top of the elevator and 5 on the bottom, maybe it'll help with the support, idk, just an idea!

    John, Im pretty sure you can change piston strength in the configs, just something to note if you do some modded rates. Personally I think the rates in the vanilla are WAAAY too low, comparable to base ark survival evolved before they added the ability to increase resource gathering.

    The simplest way to make the elevator slower is stagger the piston firing sequence. They do have a push/pull force which when they all fire at the same time stacks up to create the anti-gravity velocity you are experiencing.

    Some suggestions, replace the elevator carriage with a low weight high friction material, add suspension and ad a braking system in the middle

    Dude, you put in more work and time in this game and it pays off cause your content is a joy to watch, but seriously mod the collections! The mod on the workshop that adds some crafting lets you craft components, I understand some people might see it as OP or whatever, but come on, it's a game and should be fun. If doing that makes it fun then by all means, do it! We're here for the joy of watching you enjoy the awesome building you do and fun you have with the game. Mod it up man!

    I don't mind if you mod the gather rate. It's more fun for us if you are having fun! Just remind us every once in a while, so people know they can do the same. I think pistons are stronger when they are extended, so try going up from the bottom rather than down from the top.

    I’m halfway through the video. Have you thought about using bearings instead? An accordion style setup where the elevator is staying in the shaft with wheels? Wouldn’t cost components. You can extend the arms to get more distance.

    Yeah, up the gather rates by maybe 2 to 3 times I'd say is quite reasonable. And the elevator, perhaps doors that could open somehow so you don't fall out during the trip up or down, however it would work. Its good tho :)

    I've tweaked the drop rates here and there, to see if I felt better about the flow of components and circuit boards. Best so far was adding a non-zero drop rate to hay bots, with even odds for both drops, and rare chance for tote bots to drop components by switching them to a single random loot drop. They might drop a component, or nothing, or some tomato seeds, etc.

    Make a miner with a big "fly swatter" type arm on the front to mine the rocks form the top down, even at an angle, and it will be able to get the loose ones on the ground as well. I think that would be the easiest way for mining the rocks in the game, since they are on mounds most of the time.

    No problem with increasing the rate, i feel it too because the rate for wood, stone and metal is too low imo, a stack doesn't do too much.
    Also for the elevator you can just stick a seat on it and use that for control. And this might make the game lag but is it possible to double the pistons to increase the strenght?
    Also a crazy idea, is it possible to use wheels to for elevators instead of pistons.

    You've done way more than most with the vanilla rates man. You've put in the grind, it is time for the reward... Mod your rates! Your community knows how much time you've put in, and you deserve a bit of a break from the grind.

    Probably someone else already mentioned it, but you should only need two XOR gates to make it be callable from the floor.
    First gate takes as input two switches and the other takes as input the first gate and another switch.

    Well the devs supposedly are working on a solution to automate fuel collection, and I'm HOPING that means vacuum pumps will be able to pick up drops as well as harvest flowers/oil/clams/corn/beeswax/etc. Because you're right, the grind is exhausting, and the rapid day/night cycle makes those excursions even more of a chore. I thought the point of the game was to make contraptions that do the work for you..... But hey, at least the game is a work in progress, so it'll only get better, right?

    Well it kinda makes sense.
    If you use a button then the piston gets one of two orders. Full power backwards or forwards. But if you use a controller, then it gets the order "zero power" until the controller tells him to go to a new position/length.

    Put the pistons on the bottom with stairs going up to the elevator door. You can hide the pistons and do not need to worry about the pistons getting pulled down by the weight.

  • @pterrok5495
    @pterrok5495 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, adjust the rate til you are comfortable with it. The devs clearly are not paying attention to the players who would rather die then eat food due to the costs involved. (So they have 1st thoughts on what other rates should be and... ;-p) I might have put bubble-wrap in the elevator panels. ;-) And as I saw others mention, you could make a wheel driven lift where they grab a central pole or else climb the side girders.

Just don't up the rates to crazy like some guys do. Love the vids bro keep up the good work!!!

    Yes I'm all about reducing the grind I can't believe the Dev's are actually even asking they must be the only people alive who don't know the rates suck and it costing us viewers video's because all of you content guy's have to take time off to grind the mats to make the next video, honestly I just hacked their game files and allowed constant crafting it wasn't like my family could even play with me their game's still don't run as the Dev's are more worried about people running around with their farmers welded to things than having people enjoy the game. If I was a content creator of this game I would not be wasting precious time farming mats. My two cents worth. Love your build's j0hnbane keep up the great work.

    I've been building a base too, but not nearly as big as yours, if we count in the bridge and the elevator. I honestly think the gather rates are mostly fine, because you don't really need to make such huge buildings anyway. Luxury always had its price, and I think that is what this is about
