    MORE ABOUT SCRAP MECHANIC!
    Here’s the deal: you’re a robot maintenance mechanic en route to your posting on a fully-automated agriculture planet. Your job is to take care of the worker robots as they work the land, sending the food they produce to the metropolitan planets. Thing is, close to touchdown your spacecraft loses control and crashes, but since you’ve got luck on your side (erm…), you survive! You’re stranded though, and at first glance you find that not everything’s quite as it should be. The Farmbots working the fields have gone crazy, and now there’s only one way to stay alive: using your quick thinking, your creativity and your wily knack of turning your surroundings to your advantage.
    Let’s pop the hood and see what’s on offer right now:
    Gender!
    Choose between playing as a male or female mechanic.
    Parts ‘n’ Blocks!
    Scrap Mechanic comes loaded with over 100 parts. Some with unique shapes and sizes, but all giving you the power to basically create anything you want.
    Interactive Parts!
    The interactive parts that let you put your creations in motion represent the very best and most exciting parts of Scrap Mechanic! With a wide range of parts and an array of functions from gas and electric engines to thrusters, sensors and buttons, you’ll never be bored with the tools at your disposal!
    Handbook!
    Your Mechanics’ Handbook is your trusty educational friend, with you from the start and dying to be read! Flip trough its pages at your leisure to learn the basics of building in a easy way.
    Connect Tool!
    The tool that brings everything together and makes it all happen. A must for any true mechanic!
    Lift!
    Lightens the load when building creations with physics in mind. Let it lift you - and your creations - higher!
    Sledgehammer!
    Whack loose parts and watch them fly. Smacking physics around with the hammer is great fun.

All the things that I want to do in game I can't because to make a floating base you need a shit load of fuel or to go into the game files and adjust the fuel usage rage of thrusters or download mods. But I prefer to do things all vanilla otherwise everything I've done in survival is meaningless as I might as well just give myself all the resources or just go enable dev mode.

    I use one refinery on my vehicle and found it keeps FPS higher. You could see on that as well the wood always favours 1 particular resource collector. So maybe utilise the back of the vehicle with connected chests for crazy gathering adventures and keep it to 1 refinery

    • @j0hnbane
      @j0hnbane  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Biggest thing is weight issues and it being too long where it bottoms out. Also, when you get going with multiple trees, you'll quickly fill up the resource collectors before one refinery can keep it clear. Was going for something that would just be able to keep going and going and going without getting off or just sitting there waiting.

  • @iClustaFlux

    To reduce lag with complex vehicles, you gotta try and build with as little/few friction surfaces as possible.
    For example if you have a rotating arm that brushes up against another part of the build, try using a spacer to move it away (bearing -> pipe spacer -> arm attached out on pipe spacer)
    Although this may make your vehicles larger overall with the extra spacing out, your framerate will love the reduced physics calculations.

  • @excitedbox5705

    the suspensions are not necessary though. I wish they worked better but they are only really needed for vehicles. The suspensions only cause lag when whatever is attached is shaken around.

    I completely agree with you about the devs not needing to worry about the beds, and focus on optimizing the game to get good frames with big builds.
    I actually stopped playing, because the frames got so bad later game when i had the resources to start building proper semi automated wood/stone gatherers.
    Really love Scrap Mechanic, but i can't deal with the frames dropping to 5-25 on my 1080 Ti, and if i can't build bigger, i don't really see any way to "progress" any more.. I hope they'll fix it, so i can get back to it!

  • @Nobody_Special310

    With regard to your framerate, it looks like your left refinery and the blocks holding it up are sliding around. Maybe that's it.

    • @ShawnManX
      @ShawnManX 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also noticed it dropped significantly when he replaced some of the pipe pieces with mesh blocks. Could be the game uses more resources calculating friction/collision for the larger surface area.

    • @godoftruth1399

    Super cool build John. I don't play, but I do watch a bunch of SM youtubers and I definitely think you're one of the very best builders! Those big trees are defeating everyone, lol. You know what I'd like to see is a build that uses your cactuses on wheels that clamp around a big tree and climb up the top of it and then process the tree from the top down. Do you think that's possible?

  • @hemalon
    @hemalon 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's not a very complicated build, so my guess is a piston or a bearing trying to do something that it can't do. Giving moving blocks more clearance space always seems to help for me

  • @jeffreymetuq2249

    You should build a wood chipper. Edit build a quick detach wood chipper that when you turn on the chipper it detaches itself by cardboard blocks being cut and when you are done just back up to it and it will auto harvest when attached

  • @duolingo2stephenson38
    @duolingo2stephenson38 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have a more simple wood cutter design I found on reddit:
    Grab round the tree with low friction blocks. Then cut the stump. And now the tree falls onto the same blades used to cut the base. It has very few moving parts so less complicated and less errors.

    • @the_Acaman

    • @IRMentat
      @IRMentat 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@the_Acaman it's the difference between manual actions and Rube Goldberg machines
      if you don't fully test the system you can't tell where it breaks
      those reddit builds have to come from somewhere and I for one am avoiding much beyond logic shortcuts and some basic mechanical tricks to avoid over-use of fuel (fuel use gets absurd on mid-large sized machines yet farming and storing fuel remains a pain in the ass)
      that said a lot of youtubers seem to over-think the mechanical complexity while under-thinking the engine calculations (e.g. crush-pistons on a free floating object being pushed top-down along a slide-bed while 2 pivots are calculating break-level forces and multiple grades of suspension bearings are being put under odd-stresses.
      i'm curious what a simple set of retractible legs would do interms of saving framerate while engaged with a tree versus free-floating wheeled use. If the engine components can handle radial engine torque then I would estimate that the issue is mostly interrupted-piston, bearing and suspension related calculations.

    from the moment a tree is cut there is no more collision on the branches

  • @iwantmypot
    @iwantmypot 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You could mount the blades directly onto the bottom of the grabber, and feed the tree into those blades instead of hoping it lines up with your saw box.
    Then laying the tree down would be entirely optional... except for redwoods... those things are too heavy to hold upright as you chop them.
    Also, you accidentally made something visually similar to Scrapman's logger... though yours already works better than his. *A lot better* than his actually.

    • @the_Acaman
      @the_Acaman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can hold them big trees upright as I cut them just fine, you just have to make the grabber taller than what he has, and he said he doesn't like that.

    I feel like the game used to be so much better at handling stuff like this. We had such epic creations, but then the new survival physics made everything so risky. If we could at least get the lift and blueprints then we could make some laggy creations and break them down when they're not needed instead of parking them outside of render distance. But then there's still the stationary creations with pistons freaking the F out.
    I think it used to be that when there was a lot of weight on bearings and they would stretch that would be horrible for framerates, but now bearings and pistons are múch weaker than they used to be and I suspect that also affects how much weight you can put on a complex vehicle before the framerates go down really fast.
    Considering the limitations of the game in it's current state I gotta say that's a pretty awesome logging vehicle. For now I'm just sticking with a pretty simple saw car (double stacking them and using a controller helps a whole lot), hopefully some day this game will let us do the things it invites us to do.

  • @IRMentat
    @IRMentat 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    hell of a design
    looks like you could use some variable piston suspension to help with odd-positions
    also, the hole is a liitle small for the largest trees :p
    p.s. the refineries seem to be flexing on the mesh, between that and the press-down piston-clamp conveyor it's probably freaking out the physics engine.it would be nice if there was a parts-vew so you could tell where the games engine is straining most in terms of calculations needed (not quite a debug view but certainly something that lets you tell when the math on a seemingly simple part is stressing out the engine)

    Use level 5 controllers max speed on blades and wheels they will cut wood and really fast. Make sure your chamber is 6x6 as a just in case. Have a similar chopper and from slice to chop it processes a tree in under 10 seconds no lag.

  • @KurNorock
    @KurNorock 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have the same FPS issues. it isn't just you or just the beta. The game itself just has REALLY bad optimization.
    I completely agree with you too. The draw of this game is making complex and cool creations that do cool things. But the frame rate issues prevent the players from being able to do that.
    By this point I feel like I am playing "Frame rate management simulator" instead of a survival crafting game.

    • @IRMentat
      @IRMentat 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      depends what you mena "bad" optimisation.
      i'm running 140 framerate on regular gameplay, the physics just seems to specifically freak out when you stress out the math engine for excessive load placed upon multiple bearings/pistons/suspension.
      I like that you can use controllers to "break" expected physics (it's why I bought the game) but the system is just that, we can multiply the output of certain objects until the engine can't properly reconcile the synamic-physics math
      that the framerate "fixes" itself when you "lift" specific objects tells me that the issue is with the unseen math within powered items moreso than any global term like "optimisation".
      in most cases it seems to be a dynamic-simulation/calculation issue not a display one

    My tree logger vehicle causes major FPS drops too.
    I kinda lost the motivation to work on it because of that.
    I agree with you that the appeal of this game is to create cool things like these and not just small, simple builds.
    Anyways, that was a cool approach that you had there. Mine would lay the tree on top and then feed it into the blades.

    Bearings , piston, collisions make fps to drop, for example i have good mining vehicle with many moving parts, but when i come close to it, my fps drops from 30 to 7, and when i mine many rocks to 2 fps, i am waiting for new video card upgrade, but even if you are in area of that car your fps will drop, so i drive it out of my sight, to next area, and it stays there for time i upgrade my pc. Branches are only in way when tree is not cut.

    • @KurNorock
      @KurNorock 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The video card isn't going to help. All those physics calculations are done in the cpu I'm pretty sure. But even people with high end PCs are having major frame rate issues with this game.
      My own system is an i5 7600k and a GTX1080, both overclocked. I run the game at well over 200fps but as soon as I try to mine or harvest trees I am down in the 3-15 fps range.

      I have a powerful PC. It runs much more visually demanding and some other physics based games with less of a problem. Like what Kur said, its just how the game is made.

    Have you tried having those other vehicles of yours up on lifts while you're using that I noticed when you put things up on lifts your frame rate comes back you might want to put your other vehicles up on lifts and keep them there while you're using that one and your frame rate might be better that may be a glitch in the system

    • @andre21198
      @andre21198 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You know he only has one lift right?
      Before you comment about welding to a post, only the lift deactivates all physics of a creation. Welding to a post only stops the ground collisions, it doesn't disable the rest of the moving bits.
      But more to your point, I do agree the game should have the ability to stow creations in a no physics condition

    • @j0hnbane
      @j0hnbane  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was out of render distance of other creations when the fps really started dropping in a cleaned up area.

      @@j0hnbane the truly odd bit and you pointed it out the video was that you had serviceable frames before that final modification to the rig. As I see it you either created a contradictory interaction in your build or you had a memory overflow. How many frames did you get after rebooting?

    The bearings are much much weaker on survival for some reason.. I hope they fix it cause it causes many problems if you want to make anything more than minimal designs tbh. Also, diamond blocks or whatever it's called, has the same friction as cactuseseses, and cost 1 metal per too.

    I think the new season is a good idea but I would completely uninstall and reinstall the game when you do it mate, also on another note why even worry about the big trees as there really isn't that many just leave them be and do the small and medium one's save leaving your world barren as well.

    • @KurNorock
      @KurNorock 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That isn't going to help his framerate issues at all. Anybody who makes semi-complicated creations has the same issue.
      Also, the big trees are really the only ones worth harvesting. You get wood blocks instead of scrap wood, and you get a LOT of them. So you save a TON of time going after the big ones only.

    Had hprrible crashes in past.. going from 280fps to jitters.. then a crash. Watch yer bearings.. and especially your struts. Having vehicles with that totalled 20 suspension among them at mechanics station and trying to build a car with 4 suspension would cause the crash. Too much math it seems. Moved 1 vehicle with 5 suspension to a separate chunk. Was able to build a new car no problems.. also.. all my cars were on road.. driving on the grass would be fine.. until that extra vehicle his asphalt. Then crash. Try to keep total suspension in an area to 20 or less and you'll be fine. Went from crippling crashes to weeks without a single crash. Suspension math and bearing collisions are the worst offenders.
