Before commenting, please watch the video all the way through! I have no objections to people giving different opinions on the subject, I think that is good to hear other peoples views and I want to encourage people to put forward their thoughts. However, I would really appreciate it if you could all watch the video the whole way through before commenting. I have tried to provide a balanced argument and just want to make it clear that I do NOT promote keeping these animals together! I just want people who already house them together to make the living conditions safer for the animals, and for people considering keeping the animals together, the video explains what to expect & some potential risks. The video explains my own experiences and what I have learned with my own animals :) x

My rabbit and guinea pig were incredibly close. The bunny would put her head down and the piggy would stand on her, they'd wait for each other to do this! They also groomed each other! We did have a little trouble introducing them because we brought the bunny home first but they were very happy together very early on. My piggy was very upset and depressed after her bunny friend died and she hasn't accepted a piggy companion since so she lives alone very happily.
We did A LOT of research before deciding on a bunny and a guinea pig so we did consider all the risks. We decided if it didn't go well, we would adopt new companions for both as we were planning on adopting more animals anyway. I don't think I'd make the same decision again anyway but this video really helped me see some opinions we didn't read before getting our animals. We were not first time bunny and guinea pig owners either so we didn't go in completely blind and ignorant...
One point that really made me think was that they wouldn't understand each other. Particularly through piggy noises. However I think after living together for some time, our two definitely seemed to communicate somehow. They spent most of their time together and even though our bunny was very grumpy with us, she was incredibly calm and gentle with the piggy. They were a gorgeous pair and both me and my piggy miss our bunny so much...

Just before people mention borditella. Remember if is airborne, she had cats and dogs to and nobody ever said anything. So why now ? Dogs and cats carry borditella she has let jasper meet them. Nobody said anything. It is airborne they have a chance of getting it weather they are housed together or not. So letting her bunnies and piggies meet on a couple of occasions will not increase their chance of getting borditella. I am against rabbits meeting piggies but I really don't thing people should be saying about the Bactria.

i personally think that housing them together is fine. i am going to start bonding my guinea pig and rabbit today. i think my guinea pig needs the company since his cage mate died. they were very close and i am trying to cheer him up. THIS IS MY OPINION. I AM NOT SAYING "throw a rabbit and guinea pig in the same cage." i am saying under the right conditions they can lead a healthy happy life together.

Rabbits and guinea pigs should not mix together for lots of reasons,
one the rabbits could bully them, hurt them by accident by a kick through play or they may even try to mate with them and brake the backs of the guinea pig. rabbits could cause illness to the guinea pigs they just should not be together.

I agree. We used to have rabbits and Guinea pigs together but the last rabbit managed to kill the Guinea pig and would stalk birds 😕 After that we kept Guinea pigs with other Pigs although the rabbit would stalk them too so couldn't even have them on the grass at the same time.

My Guinea Pig's best friend is My Pupper. My pup is sort of scared of the Guinea Pigs and hide from them when I do floor time. My Guinea Pig's on the other hand find Shiro and smell him etc etc. But when they 're in the cage my pupper Shiro sits beside them and looks at them without a single bark. The guinea pigs stand and try their best to reach Shiro. But Shiro is laying down and watching them. It's really a very interesting friendship between them. I got my guinea pigs almost 2 years ago and my Pupper just this January

my rabbit has always lived with pigs, he was badly hand raised after his mother rejected him and has never EVER got along with other rabbits, to give him company we got him a pig friend and they got on really well, when my GP passed my rabbit was devistated and stopped eating for a short period so we adopted two new female pigs which my rabbit still happily lives with, he is now a very old and ill rabbit, completely blind and has bad teeth (he's not in any pain though and can still eat and live his life) the pigs wash around his eyes for him and general look after him, at least that's how I see, I know it's not perfect but all the animals show no sign of stress. because of my rabbits love for the pigs I think it would be unfare and to seoerate them now , especially because of my rabbits age.

I ended up inheriting a lone guinea pig. I let him roam in the garden with my shihtzus. The shihtzus are very placid and calm natured. They get on well and often sit next to him. Once a fox came for my guinea pig and the shihtzus defended him by barking to spook the fox away.

I have a strong opinion of this subject. My rabbit and Guinea pig were housed in the same room and my Guinea pig ended up getting sick and eventually passed away. I know it may be a rare occurrence, but anyone considering housing them together should take this under serious consideration before doing so, as it was a terrible experience and left my rabbit and I heart broken.

For me the answer to having gp and rabbits together is a straight no! I know people that have had rabbits and guinea pigs in the same room (not together together, but in the same room) where the guinea pigs died because of Bordetella and the rabbits where both perfectly healty and the guinea pigs was too, this was thoroughly examined by the vet so I believe you can be very unlucky and this can happen with others too so it is not worth taking that risk if you love your pets especially your guinea pigs in this case. And the other reasons is to what you mention -that rabbits can harm a guinea pig (even so bad that the guinea pig may loose his life) without meaning it. And they do not understand each other so they don't get the proper interaction they need with an other conspecific.

guineas and bunnies have different 'languages' and this can lead to some confusion on both parts, and even some aggression if one animal misreads a sign. plus! rabbits can carry some germs that can get guineas very sick, so be careful. however it should be alright to let them meet each other every once in awhile!

I've got a question about guinea pigs and I could really use some help!
Soon I'll be getting a pair of female guinea pigs and I'll be keeping them in a c&c cage, although it is a bit small-100cm by 60cm. I don't have more room to make the cage bigger. I'll give them floortime everyday. Would it be ok? Should I make a second floor level?

I like this video! It was unique and had a ton of information! :D I was wondering, do you know if guinea pigs and a cat would get along in the same household? I own 6 guinea pigs and they live in 4 cages connected with ramps, and there are no roofs on the top of their cages. I want to try to convince my parents to let me get a cat, but one of the reasons is because the cat might try to eat the guinea pigs or harm them, so what do you think about them living in the same area/household? Thanks and hope you have a great day! :)

  • @KatrinaLoveBeautifullove

Yes but it depends on the rabbit and guinea pig. I have both, my baby bunny kept getting into the guinea pigs cage, the guinea pig humped him every day for a week. I separated them cause it was weird but everyday the rabbit was back in the same cage. I thought my kids were doing it till one day I saw the rabbit climb into the guinea pigs area, now they are best of buds even though the rabbit is huge after 3 months. No more humping, eat together sleep together etc.

This bacteria very very rarely affects a household of both guinea pigs and rabbits for the simple reason thats its a bacteria which the guinea pigs immune defence systems reject. They have to be cold, fragile of health or under the age of 2 weeks if it should cause respiratory issues for them. And more often than not the respiratory symptoms will be minor while the owner will mostly notice loose bodily waste and increased thirst. IT is the same principle as with the few different bacteria strands that can affect humans from cats and dogs - its not something to worry about and although there is a huge number of people living with these pets, there are close to no cases per year of these illnesses.

Also the guinea pigs skulls are so dense in bone structure and bone density that a rabbit can't fracture it from a hind leg kick. They can give them a sore side or shortly sore spot but thats it. The main "risk" is if the rabbits chase the guinea pigs as the guinea pigs often will not turn around and stand their ground, but instead let be chased around and they can be very fragile towards stress which is also one of the main health risks for guinea pigs second after old age. They can't cope with stress. But as long as they sniff the rabbits or put their noses into the rabbits fur and the rabbits don't run around and affect the pigs to run around as well or make the pigs run away from them, they should be fine.

Thanks for sharing and clearing that up. It makes perfect sense what you are saying. The UK/US sites do not provide enough information about the bacteria, but what you wrote is very easy to understand and now it all makes sense :)
