Love these combos! A brand new 4910 with this build for about the price of a new MS261 or 550xp mk2 would be tough to beat. I used to be in OPE and was an Echo rep. I sent your site to one of my Echo dealers I still keep up with who also has a large tree service. He’s also a Husky dealer. Would love to see him grow his business with your builds!
Dude love ur videos like how u don't let the starter smack into the case like other ppl do u literally make sure it doesn't hit it n follow it back Def appreciate that
Man they are pretty big hp gains I mean id be happy with an honest 30% increase. Such a cool tool you made Joe...the saw measuring stick, coupled with the software etc.
Really enjoy this video as a chainsaw tinkerer and 4910 owner. I was thinking of getting a Farmertec toy saw since used saws are expensive in Terrace BC but this makes me want to mod my Shindi!
Thanks for the comparo! I've been thinking my MS290 is getting long in the tooth and have started looking for a possible replacement. Lighter would be so much better!
Joe you could add a PTWR (Power To Weight Ratio to each saw build-chart /graph. Full tanks and half tanks ratios. Before and after porting That would give us a real world expectation when buying a saw and what to expect after we send them get them back Just a thought??
Echo needs to port these standard from factory to compete with stihl and husky. With their Japanese engineering and reliability, competitive performance numbers and pricing, they would be a real player.
Nice gains, The huge problem with all those saws is the air filter doesn't seal and they suck saw dust. Every one ive seen the intake is full of dust. If someone could make a better filter those saws would be a win.
I add silicone grease around the base of the air filter it helps a lot. But I’m in western Washington so the wood is pretty usually too. That’s my only gripe about the 501P.
So much information in your videos! A question for you Joe: what's the purpose of letting only one ring in the piston? Apart from the less friction I mean. There's something to be aware of doing this? Thanks
Just before you ran the final dynos, you mentioned the saws are only running the upper rings. I was wondering why not also have the lower ring on the piston? Thanks for the great video. I may be interested in getting one of my 4910's ported like this. I have a tree service.
wierd i just pulled my 4910 down it looks different than this one no point in the intake and no band at the top just the dome chamber...i had to pull .040"+ to tightem squish...had .083"with the gasket....
The 490 is the only one with the triangle intake floor. Normally no gasket and 23 off the base gets squish close to 25 on the 4910s but thast is why it's best to check each one.
Wow Joe! What a great video 😎 Since I have a 4910 you ported, I have a new knowledge of what was done. Not bragging, but I have many choices for sawing firewood, and I grab the 4910 with 18” more than anything else. Thanks for taking all the time to make these “presentations”
You can pick up a 4910 for about 350$. Get it ported for about 200$, and you have a saw that out performs every other 50cc out there, is lighter than ever other 50cc out there, and is still cheaper than the 261 and 550XP MK2.
They are easier to set the port heights. Some can be very difficult to remove, sometimes causing damage. Shaping and blending can be difficult, having to remove and install the caps multiple times. Generally saws with caps need more transfer work.
Joe. Once again great gains An 80% gain is huge!!!! I need to send you some saws. I have A husky 55 I bought in the nineties it is my go to saw because it starts every time it’s fairly light and it flat rips for a stock 55 cc saw. What kind of gains would you expect to get with that??
Great video! Thanks for showing your porting work, and the numbers. Do you leave them with one ring? How much drag would leaving the 2nd ring take? And, I think it is cool you have a dyno and show the numbers. One thing a lot of people think is that all the 50cc saws weigh about the same. These are about a pound lighter than the others. I use a Jonsred 2260 (60cc) a lot for firewood, and it is small and light and fast, but the echo's 50cc are over a pound less than that saw, and not too slow when ported. Thanks!
I was curious my dollar Sachs saw 112. Says 3.1 cu.in also it says 5hp sae. I just don't remember seeing a 50.cc saw produce 5 hp. More like 3.6 I think anyhow it's a good running powerful saw. Made in west Germany.
I had two of the older pre Echo Shindaiwa 446s, which later became the Echo 500p- 45 ish cc, similar or maybe the same case as these. The Shin version would run circles around the Echo. I tried swapping some of the parts over to the Echo, muffler, airfilter and housing. It did do better but the echo was not built as well and didnt last very long. Miss those Shins. Lost a fair amount of respect for Echo, really felt like they took a great saw and cheesed it out.
Would the average person be better of with a 4hp stock 261 or a 550? I get echo is cheaper but then porting and completely losing factory warranty is it worth it.
If you are keeping the saw stock the stihl/husqvarna options are the way to go power wise. The 4910 is a great dependable saw on a budget price, but no "wow" in stock form
Very interesting. I just ordered a new 501p today. Excited to see what it cuts like. I’ve never owned a echo saw before, been using a stihl 036,026 and a O9L for a long time.

Are echo good saws? Japan makes the most reliable cars and motorcycles, why not saws? U never hear much abt echo. They look sweet. How do they compare the the obvious Stihl/husky?
They are very well made saws. Simple solid designs. But they ate more conservative stock. To keep the 5 year warranty. Stock out of the box they are typically behind in power. But really wake up with modifications.
@@dynojoemods2764 let’s say u were a guy that just got a wood stove and are going to acquire enough firewood for winters here on out…..so I just need a reliable saw, no need for huge power, the kicker is I’m interested in trying a little chainsaw milling and I like the idea of a long bar just for not having to bend over as much. I’ve been eyeing the 460 rancher but not 💯 if it’s quite enough for lite milling? I don’t want to buy the wrong saw right off the bat and have to buy another. What would your best/cheapest advice be? Echo only comes from depot so that’s my worry there.
@@jimmylarge1148 if you're still looking, the echo CS-590 is a stronger saw and better value than a 460 rancher. 590 can handle a 28" bar in a pinch but wouldn't regularly bury it. CS-620 is an awesome saw for not much more $ than the 460 rancher. These 50cc echo's are great saws! Just sounds to me like a 60+cc saw would better suit your needs, for a 1 saw plan.
80% gains!?! That's like a whole different saw, after the port work.
Red97 back at it again. I've been "Joe-sing" for you're videos while you were out wielding. (see what I did there🤔😆😅😂🤣) Nice to see you back at it.

Welcome back Joe!
Huge gains. Thanks for the video, Think Ive decided to go ahead and port my 50 rancher big bore. Again, thanks for the numbers!
Needs to come up a mile, a mile and a half 😅.
Nice video Joe, awesome gains.
Great video! I was suprised the shindaiwa was that far behind the 4910/501 for power
Nice work builds with impressive gains Joe. Thanks for sharing.

Great vid some of my favorite saws there
3 dang good runin saws all 3 brands done well good work sir
Nice solid power gains. Thank for the informative video Joe.
I ran ported 4910; crazy amazing…. Have ever you ported the 620p as well?
Great video Joe. Awesome gains
Thank you
Echo needs to port these standard from factory to compete with stihl and husky. With their Japanese engineering and reliability, competitive performance numbers and pricing, they would be a real player.
They would last less, they go for reliability, read their company slogan
I'm glad they don't. I'd prefer the reliability
Crazy good gains out of those small saws!
Nice gains, The huge problem with all those saws is the air filter doesn't seal and they suck saw dust. Every one ive seen the intake is full of dust. If someone could make a better filter those saws would be a win.
Cs 7310p is sealed

So much information in your videos! A question for you Joe: what's the purpose of letting only one ring in the piston? Apart from the less friction I mean. There's something to be aware of doing this? Thanks
The bottom ring locating pin on the 4910/501 gets too close for comfort on the exhaust port once widened. Dropped the 490 just to keep it "fair".
Thank you Joe!
Love your work Joe. When do you have availability to do work on my 501p?
Holy cow! Gains off the roof!
Just before you ran the final dynos, you mentioned the saws are only running the upper rings. I was wondering why not also have the lower ring on the piston?

How do you find cylinders with transfer caps for porting? Easy to work with, or don’t need much transfer work generally?
They are easier to set the port heights. Some can be very difficult to remove, sometimes causing damage. Shaping and blending can be difficult, having to remove and install the caps multiple times. Generally saws with caps need more transfer work.
do all echo 490 cylinder numbers match? great vid.
They are all very similar
So, of you adjust the squish can you just leave ports and transfers as they are until a later date?
What is your technique for breaking in a saw after porting?

What does eliminating the bottom ring accomplish ? Less friction ?
The end gaps ge t really close to the edge of the exhaust port, don't want to snag it

What were the stock 501 numbers, Joe? I didn't see those in the final printout.
amazing gain ! whit muffler mod and tune no porting what is the number hp 🤔
Why didn’t you take the front plugs out of the echo cans? You did with Shindawa
Front plugs?
@@dynojoemods2764 in the shindawa there are 2 holes that are open in the front of the can. The echo’s are not open! Any reason NOT to open these up?

Joe,
Why do you drop the secondary ring on theses saws builds??
You mention the stock coil in the 491 being rev-limited, what could I replace it with in my slightly modded CS-490? Thanks!
May be able to swap with a 4910/501 coil but I am not 100% sure

What kind of HP/TQ would you expect to see on 550XP or 261 with a work port?
It has been a while since I have done either of those, from past experience they are very close to my 501p once all are ported.
Awesome gains

What if any, are the negatives related to running a factory 2 ring setup with only one?
Nothing drastically noticeable. May wear a bit faster. And transfer a touch less heat
Didn't the little homelite put out the same power as the 491? Don't see the video of it anymore.
It was around 2.x hp too. Pretty good for an old 40cc
