    Here's the best way to manage this: when reaching low, try to keep the resonance higher - don't let it sink all the way to the bottom of your body very quickly, but just let it slide smoothly into the chest. When trying to hit low, use closed vowels like 'oo' or 'ee' to get the lows easier, then open them up. Also, try mixing chest voice with vocal fry for the absolute bottom notes. There won't be terribly much power, but the notes will be more present than how he's singing in this video.

      @Timliu92 8 ปีที่แล้ว +79

      Lol indeed, he is totally not a bass. Just because someone can hit low notes does not mean he is a bass singer. A real bass sounds a lot thicker in his lower register, like Barry White or Avi Kaplan from Pentatonix - now that is a bass singer.

    Bass vocals come with less strain when you relax. Timbre is also what determines a true bass from a baritone. If you can hit the lower notes with weight and full volume with a consistent tone then you are more than likely a bass. I hate when teachers confuse sound placement with vocal classification.

  • @timothyemery7918

    A bass range varies with each voice. The timbre of the voice is what truly makes a bass, and that comes with the range. I personally can only hit an E2 or maybe a half-step down, but I am a bass because of the timbre of my voice, a very dark and open tone. True, this may make me more of a bass-baritone, but I am still classified as a bass.

I used to think he was a baritone at the start, but when I realized how hard his low notes really are for him I think he's probably a mid to low tenor.

  • @andrewcarroll6887
    @andrewcarroll6887 8 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    Not to be rude, but this is terrible advice. The way to gain volume and resonance on low notes is to place the tone in the mask (vocal twang). Pulling the note into the chest will bring the larynx down, thus engaging the swallowing muscles and causing tension.

    Maybe instead of criticizing someone who has most likely had voice lessons from trained professionals and taken Vocal Pedagogy in order to learn teaching techniques you should try and understand what she means by 'pulling the sound down'. She didn't say, 'swallow your sound' at all. What she means to say is that the lower you go you need to activate your abdominals and breathe like your lungs go down to your pelvis and connect with your body and sound to get the full resonance.

    @aadams22 12 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    You could just have a great range to work with. My singing range goes from G1 to B4. I can hit the C5 on rare occasions, but I'm struggling to get there. This means I have a little more than a 3 octave range to my voice, but I am by no means a "super singer" as you put it. Some people are just blessed with a wide vocal range, and it appears you may be one of those people. There are some people out there that can't be pigeon holed into a voice type. Freddy Mercury had a 4 octave range F2-F6

    Well gmfrk197, I am a trained basso and I know that good advice is specific. Example: you do not say "sing softer" when you refer to volume because "soft" is a term that is better used for the quality of voice. Second techniques are better demonstrated with the appropriate range. She said "if you HAVE got the bass voice...." not 'if you have a baritone or low tennor... 'pulling it down' is better suited to describe swallowing the sound than brightening it.

    I'm sorry, but first of all, he is no bass... And the last tone... it sounds not very healthy, he pushes the tone and lets the tone not coming... That is always difficult for the vocal stripes. If he would let come the tone, then his vocal stripes would be relaxed (if the tone comes or not), but when he pushes the tone, then the vocal stripes are sounding like in your example, not clear, more scratching.

    People who aren't natural singers make the mistake of trying to 'place' the voice when they sing, they try to make it come from their chest -- but the 'secret' is that it comes from exactly the same place as the talking voice.For someone who isn't a natural singer the simplest technique in the world is to HUM just before you sing -- but a 'Singing Tutor' won't tell you this otherwise you'd realise you don't need their lessons ( and lessons...and lessons).When someone who isn't a natural singer finds that their voice has 'wandered' halfway through the second verse of a song, don't panic, HUM again into your next singing note and this will put your voice back in the right place --- people hum now and then as a natural part of their speech, and they don't have to think about 'placing' that hum......well, do they?* After a while, you can learn to 'internalise' the hum (so that no-one hears it) -- otherwise, hum softly................and continue singing.

    I used to sing bass notes but now I'm in singing lessons learning to sing more tenor notes since I am naturally a tenor who was a baritone in my senior of high school. I used to have a medium range with the baritone solos as well as Italian songs sung in medium low keys and I discovered now in college I am comfortable singing the tenor solos and Italian songs in medium high keys plus learning German Art Lieder. So I don't have a bass baritone range or true bass range really than I do have a mix of high baritone and normal tenor range therefore a true low tenor range that sings well often on medium high keys and sometimes can sing songs in high keys. However the low voice I can use would be a low B or B2 as my lowest but may sound weak. Some tenors may sing bass notes from C2 - E2. I am most comfortable with middle and high notes and my high range is getting stronger enough to be more of a tenor than a baritone/bass. He must be a regular baritone and he should not worry about his low notes.

    Low F, actually. You're perfectly right, of course - a real bass should be singing down to around the D or the C, and with some time, probably Bb or A below the staff, but yeah...just wanted to correct that with my obsessive perfect pitch.

      If what you just said is true, then yes that would be a bass speaking voice. However, just because you speak bass it doesn't mean you have to only sing bass and restrict yourself from singing anything else. Some people can't choose which type of voice they can sing in and have a limited range. Other singers can choose which voice type they can be part of. Who knows what's possible for you?

Most tenors I have worked with seem to bottom out around D3 to E3. @Owneandor1337 If you can hit those notes, good for you and I don't mean that sarcastically. Not to be harsh, but yeah this isn't very good. If you push the sound down then you stuff it in your throat which is very bad long term for your vocal chords and can cause pain. It's better to do a humming sound and feel it at the front of your mouth, then try and mimick that feeling without a closed mouth

    This was absolutely horrible. As a basso profondo and semi professional singer the worst advice you can give a bass is to "brng it down into your body". Aside from the fact that is person isn't a bass, more like a baritone , it's better to view or think about your voice resonating from the bones in your face. if you want the sound to travel anywhere. Think ' up and out".

    If that was that guy's lowest note, he's just a baritone, cause the F2 is usually the baritone's lowest note. And the real basses sound way lower than this, like an A1 or even lower. It's not just hitting YOUR low notes that makes you a bass. For example, my chest range (without frying or falsetto) is C#2-A4, and I still consider myself a baritone, even going much lower than this guy.

    • @Timliu92
      @Timliu92 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      True. I am a baritone and can hit a F2 (or E2 on a good day), but it is more than just hitting the notes on pitch - you need to produce a healthy sound too, and this guy has so much vocal fry in his F2, which is bad for his vocal cords in the long run.

    The guy has a nice voice but either he's not a bass or he needs to work a bit more on his lower notes because he sounds like he's struggling as he goes deeper. I'm a baritone and to go to the lower notes you have to be conscious to actually open up your voice more and more as you go lower, not to close it because it will make it sound muffled and it can actually be a bit painful after a while since it sounds raspy...

    True basses are pretty rare. This guy sounds like a high baritone to me. Not that he couldn't improve low tones, nor high ones for that matter. There are bass baritones that have stunning high C's and D's. They aren't tenors. People just figure it out.
