- I found this tow truck almost a year ago on Facebook Marketplace and thought I needed a tow truck. Then along came Bernie and the squarebody got pushed into the weeds and forgotten about. Until now!! Let's see if we can get this thing to roll coal once again! This truck has been SOLD! As always, thanks for watching!

Never had so much fun watching two fellas working on a dirty old tow truck. Mojo is a gem.

When I went to buy a tow pig, everyone told me those stock 6.2's are great motors if you don't exceed their limits or hotrod them. It's great to see Mojo at work, not just background noise.
Mojo is a national treasure!
Mojo's awesome!!
International we love him here too 🇬🇧
What would you do without MOJO? he is a great mechanic
He truly is!
6.2 guru by the sounds of it.
Could we have a Friday night Mojo story session with some sammiches?
A lot less!😂
He seems like a humble guy!
Mojo is awesome! You are lucky to have a friend like him. Knows his stuff.
sure am
Having Mojo is like having every repair manual from 1958 to present day . WOW , he is amazing !
sure is!
Flat out love when the " Mojocraft" is in effect....he's a treasure😊
You can learn from books, video's etc, but nothing better than listening and watching a old school guy show you how it's done.
Wealth of experience and information. Priceless 👌
Right on!
This is one of my favourite Mortske episodes. I could listen to old mechanics like Mojo for hours. I know at the beginning he didn't want to be on camera at all but hopefully there's more like these.
Lol mojo is like your version of yoda!!
Exactly!
Fixing diesels I am!
I think there is a Mojo sticker in there somewhere
You and Mojo make a great team. He’s got so much knowledge, there’s nothing greater than watching an old school mechanic at work.
Mortske, Mojo and Duff on a Monday. Perfect
You might consider using a rubber tipped air nozzle and shoot air into the glow plug hole on each cylinder to see where the air is going. That would tell you whether the head gasket is bad. A 6.2/6.5 is an indirect injection system, meaning the injector sprays fuel into a pre-chamber instead of right on top of the piston. The glow plug heats the prechamber, which gets the fuel to ignite and start the engine. This is also why the glow plugs are needed year round. Going back to the beginning of the video, the previous owner said the engine was locked up. Perhaps it was hydro-locked from coolant entering the combustion chamber from a blown head gasket. In the time the engine sat, the coolant seeped by the rings and let the engine spin.
The 6.2/6.5 diesel wasn't a bad engine as long as they were not overloaded, had good glow plugs, and clean fuel. We had one in a 1 ton 4WD we used to pull around a tub grinder, which was WAY too much weight. After replacing a couple engines, we bought a GMC Brigadier with a L-10 Cummins, problem solved. The other 6.2s we had that weren't abused were pretty dependable. I still would't want one, though....
Great video! Mojo kind of reminds me of my 91 year old Dad, who up until a couple years ago was still tinkering on things.
Thanks for the tips
Mechanics like Mojo are a passing breed. Just try to find anyone ( yourself included) that knows so much keeps at it, and won’t stop till he gets it done.
he's a real asset!
Awesome to see Mojo in front of the camera workin on a 6.2!
alot. thanks@
He probably knows more service manuals by heart than most genius engineers forgot about.
Love Mojo! That old timer knowledge is so vaulable.
Appreciate the deep dive with the Mojo-Man...my folks and grandparents aren't around anymore. I always imagined what it would be like to learn from the old coots. Glad you keep him around for us to enjoy!
Our pleasure!
6.2’s were way better than the 6.5’s. I’ve had a few 6.2’s that made it over 300k. With modern diesel fuel lacking lubricity, adding used motor oil helps them tremendously. Yes, they were absolutely gutless, but they did get excellent fuel mileage. Manual transmissions behind them is rare. I just recently got rid of a ‘93 GMC Z71 that was a 5 speed. It got 24mpg. I only got rid of it because I couldn’t find a harmonic balancer.
Mojo is my role model, I'm only 62 so still have a lot to learn and when I grow up I want to be like him.
Always good to see the old timers work on these rigs! Was cool to see! Also.. I've NEVER seen this topside creeper! Kinda cool!
Just bought an 82 c30 rollback with a turbo 6.2 yesterday, I'm so in love.
That’s a bummer that Duff didn’t get a ride but he does love running around! Great video and you should give Mojo a raise
We will!
Mojo sure is a treasure! Watching you two reminded me of all the junque my dad and I used to work on. These days all we work on together are reruns of Gunsmoke and a few beers.
2 hour videos anger my supervisors. I, on the other hand appreciate the 2 hour diesel curvball from you guys.
I was in Motor T in the Marine corps in the 90’s. All of our humvee’s had the 62 diesel. Completely gutless and always breaking down. Controllers always failed.
Always and added start to my week with a Monday morning start with Sir Mortske, and MOJO showing the kid how it’s done on them diesels. Great start to my week! Maybe Puddin, will finally be working on cars again, instead of cleaning his new digs, and junk yard searching in the high grasses.😊
dropped one today the wagon is back, and to the naysayers out there you cant build a car without a shop and now that the shops put together time to get that rust movin
before pulling the pump the next time, remove the return line fitting on top of pump. check ball inside plugs up with material from inside the pump. it will start and run . the local chevy dealer and i took his demo, an 85 suburban with a 6.2 and 700r4. 3.42 rear, on a ski trip from west texas to colorado, and averaged 28 mpg loaded with people and gear. diesel was under 1 dollar / gallon.
Good old days
A day off, morning coffee, cool weather, and Mortske and Duff Dog. What else could I possibly need? Happy Monday!
Mojo? Or, Mojo doing his Walter Brennan impression? But you are right perfection! Have a good day.
It didn't run, that's ok. You ventured in to the world of the 6.2 AND we got to see a great Mojo video.
Men like him are irreplaceable, and full of incredible knowledge. Great video as always, Thank you!!!
Well said!
After a long day I finally got back to finish the video. What kills 6.2s is cracked main webbing and broken cranks. It'll either fly apart or lock up. Also I see you learned the lesson of never shooting ether onto hot glow plugs haha. Fortunately it was just an open hole, but it can blow intakes apart or on some of the Ford idi engines blow the injector cup out
You just knew when Mojo got over being camera shy that he was going to be a star. Thanks again for all the hard work.
A two hour special!!! Looking forward to it 👍💪
OMG, i was choking on my on spit (will ferrel reference) when he asked Duff 'just did you say six two.?'
twff
alot thanks@
Seller: "It's locked up"
Engine: Doesn't run
Mortske: "I got duped"
Wow, TopsideCreeper! Who knew that was a thing? Now I need one! ❤😎
yup
Totally enjoy the interactions you have with ole mojo. The friendship you two have is priceless! Mojo is a library of knowledge that you are blessed with having. Everybody should have a mojo in their lives. I think you are pudden's mojo.
So true!
Usually pulling and installing new head gaskets will tell you more about the condition of the engine Block and heads. I'm sure injectors need to be taken apart and cleaned if the cylinder and heads are in good condition.
I often wonder if Deutz had the right idea when it came to preheating the F8L series diesels. Rather than a set of glow plugs, they used, essentially, fire to preheat the intake air. They had jets in the intake tubes that shot a flame in each tube to preheat the air and, in turn, the engine. Very effective providing you didn't use ether and blow out the intake tubes.
Pretty sure the timing chain jumped, that’s why it doesn’t have compression. Can hear all the compression coming out the intake valves. Enjoy the videos even when there’s failures, we all get stumped sometimes and chase down the wrong rabbit hole once and a while. Except Duff, he knew what rabbit hole you needed to go down, just couldn’t explain it. Haha!
To add to your timing diagnosis, could the injection pump timing be 180 out? When they were turning crank to align dowel pin it would have to be two crank rotations to one injection pump rotation. It appeared they only did one rotation.
@@kolt.45should have at least fired on starting fluid.
@@dans_Learning_Curve It did. Coughed, spat a fireball, occasionally kicked over half a rotation.
@@TestECull oh. You're correct!
Definitely heard compression coming by intake valve’S. Also doubting that Lift Pumps ability.
My first time commenting, but love watching. Keep it up 👍🏻
My experience with the 6.2 has taught me they make great boat anchors!
Mojo and you work well together.
Welp! That was interesting, It was fun to listen to Mojo’s story and I got some great tips on getting an old worn out diesel running…
Thank you!
Mojo is the doppelganger of Tom for Coldwarmotors (with a lot less colorful language) 😆! Either way a valuable asset to any You Tube channel!
Good point!
Mojo teaching Mortske to repair diesels, what a cool combo. I'm sure the reason why it was said the engine is sized might have been to do with all the bad ground cables what where not hooked properly or a very weak battery. Too bad the engine was pooched, probably got used and abused.
Man that takes dedication, it took dedication just to watch!
Always dig your videos, but this one was endearing. Your friend Mojo reminded me of working on tractors back home with my grandfather a very long time ago. Thank you for making this and for the good memories. Stay well.
Mojo is the man!!! Lord I laughed so hard when he first go up on the top side creeper and Chin put him in fast time laps…..a older feller moving that fast was awesome!!! He is going to still your channel without even trying too!!! Go Mojo!!!!!! Your are no doubt the star of the show!! Your a lucky man Mortske!!! Love your channel!!
thanx for the shout out mortske-I knew you were going to need several batteries to get a 5.7 gm diesel to run.funny how the the gm diesel with the worst reputation actually ran. keep the great videos coming.
Much appreciated
So true! The gasoline based 5.7 Olds diesel "unreliability" (read "horrible idea") did more to harm passenger car diesel sales in the US than cold weather start performance or lack of support. Expecting a gasoline engine to withstand the necessary compression ratios of diesel engines showed the silliness that made GM eventually file for bankruptcy.
@@stephanieluigon5192 i totally agree the engine block on the diesel 5.7 is just an ordinary gas engine block-what were they thinking?one redeeming quality was if you had one in california and you registered before the eventuall gas engine conversion it was smog exempt -but what a lot of work to drive a giant gm car that would be smog exempt
Tom, I would save the Olds Diesel 350 block. The block is super heavy duty and makes a great block for a gasoline drag racing engine. They are highly sought after by Olds racers.
Just the greatest channel and content creator 😊 much respect ✊
Great to see you and MOJO working on stuff together.
You win some you lose most but that’s the way she goes. Always entertaining watching this channel
Glad to hear it
The glow plug controller relay is behind the breather, mounted on the intake manifold
As soon as you first cranked it I thought "you didn't let the glow plugs heat up first". My Dad had a '79 Olds Diesel. It was actually a reliable car. If you strap a camera to Duff it will come back with deer poop, raccoon poop and poop from whatever else you've got around there smeared on it.
Well, no-one can say you didn't give it your best shot. I'm a points and condenser man so I don't feel inclined to go to the dark side after this. Well impressed by MoJo's topside creeper. Never seen one before, but it makes perfect sense given the size of some of those rigs. Take care, Mortske, all the best, Mart from Mart's Garage in England.
I was thinking the same thing about that top creeper, had never seen one before but it sure looked handy.
Thank you Mojo the only thing I knew about diesel engines is to heat up glow plugs before you start her up learned something today
He’s a wealth of information
Can't get enough Mojo! You two are a riot. God I love Mortske Monday!
Mojo the 6.2 whisperer, a buddies 6.2 was full of disappointments, ate three starters and in the end the crankshaft broke around the rear main bearing. Can't say you guys didn't give it a major dose of CPR trying to make it live, the original owner probably fed it to much either with the fuel starvation issue.
Where has the Top side creeper been all my life? Genius!
Been waiting for a Mojo collaboration for a while, gotta love that little hand clap he does when you first bring the truck in or the "hee-hee" laugh when testing the glowplugs... "I got fans? All right!"
Really enjoyed this episode! Great fun watching you & Mojo work together! Thanks for the super entertainment!😂
our pleasure!
I like the Aussie brand of ether "Start Ya Bastard!"
Upgrading to 2/0 battery cables will solve the wires overheating (common issue). Never use starting fluid on the 6.2, wd40 works great. Cycle the glow plugs for 30 seconds for a couple rounds. I have some crappy videos on my page for the 6.2 referencing all the above issues.
Thanks for the tips!
Mojo is full of information! Thank you for sharing! 👌 😊
Glad it was helpful!
Mojo was Lovin’ the 5-7. … so was I tbf love some diesel action 👍🏻
I loved my 6.2 slowest thing on four wheels but she ran and ran and ran.
I remember that tow truck from when I was younger
alot, thanks@
Mojo is frigin awesome. Thanks for another Mortske Monday! Thanks for the editing work Chin!🐾🍺
OUr pleasure STu!
There is a product in Aus called “Start Ya Bastard”. Which is generally what you are saying at the time.
alot thanks@
A 6.2 Detroit. The main downfall of them is they were designed to be ran extremely hard..not light use, they get carboned up too easy...and will not start in the winter. Gotta hand it to GM though, they were the only company to make diesels in-house until just recently. It made the trucks way more affordable vs. Ford or Dodge
Its my best birthday in many years...2 hr video with Mortske, Mojo and Duff. Thank you. Great video.
happy birthday!
When I first saw the second tow rig was thinking Weather Channel wanted to do another tow truck series Heavy Rescue:Mortske Edition ( with Duff The Wonder Dog ).
Mojo what a gentleman it's nice to see the respect and the bond you have for and with him which shows what a gentleman you are as well regards wayne
Thank God for MoJo , he knows his diesel . Shame the tow truck is a non runner but hopefully someone who needs a headache will be up to the task . Take care , give Duff a treat , and until next time , Stuart in Ontario ..
It was great watching you work it with Mojo. That's an OG mechanic right there!
Sure is
Love them 6.2 great fuel economy and ok power wish i had the money id be there to get it
Mortske, my dad had an Oldsmobile station wagon when we were kids with a 57 diesel what a hunk of junk no offense to the people that like them just from experience 0 to 60 in 5 miles. And mom couldn’t figure out it couldn’t run on gas. Great episode buddy cheers made the old guy. Happy to hear it run.
Good times
I have never even heard of the Top Side Creeper. I like it. Maybe with one of those I might be able to work on vehicles again. As for the 5.7 diesel? I didn't know any of them were still in existence.
Junkyard Digs recently posted a video of one with a 5.7 that they swapped with a 455 gasser. A while before that, they were in the background of Pole Barn Garage's video unsuccessfully trying to get it to run. They're turds, but there's a small group of people who love these GM V6 & V8s and still want the parts. Apparently the DX blocks are more desirable, but I'd imagine in a few more years parts will be unobtainium.
Bought one for the shop a few years ago, same one, gives my back a break and better than laying across a 2x6
@@Cochis3 I am disabled with severe back issues and I think with one of those, I could possibly do some of my own work on my vehicles again. Looks like I am going to have to start saving up money and hopefully in a year or 2 will be able to buy one. (It's not easy to save up for anything living on less than $1000 a month)
Had the same issue with 1990 7.3 idi that sat for years, bled lines. Couldn’t get it to fire, pulled glow plugs and verified lack of compression, filled the fuel filter up with atf and marvel mystery oil, towed it behind a truck for about 20 minutes getting it to cycle the mixture through the IP, let it sit for a day and tried pop starting it. Had horrendous blow by for about two hours, ran it at about 1500rpm, rings ended up coming back around and it ran mint. Your results may vary but it’d be cool to see an old 6.2 workhorse back up and running again
Awesome
Currently at home and off work due to Covid and I’ve been waiting days for this video! You’ve made my week already. I greatly appreciate your videos every week. I’m sure you don’t hear it enough but thank you dearly for the weekly entertainment and everything else that you do. I’m looking forward to next summer when you and Puddin are cruising the Some Day Model A.

I think everyone needs a trusty shop foreman like MOJO he's awesome! Maybe one day I can get up there and have a sammich with you and Duffman and talk shop with Mojo. 😁🤙as always love the channel keep on keepin on!

@urbanurchin5930
#1 I NEVER go anywhere uninvited.
#2 If invited, I'll show up with 4 cases and something for MOJO and Duff.
Back when the 5.7 and the 6.2 were on the road they would blow head gaskets and crack heads around the head bolt holes. It actually cost less for my shop to get a 350/455 Olds engine from a junkyard, rebuild it and swap it over than it was to repair the diesels. If you pop one of the heads off that 6.2 you'll more than likely find gas engine head gaskets.
What about all of the cylinders not having compression? Popping through the intake?
@@dans_Learning_Curve Head gaskets are blown between the cylinders. It's the weakest spot.
Man mojo loves those six twos as much as I love the 7400 vortec although I'm sure he's probably forgotten more about the 6-2 then I know about a 7400 vortec got to respect the experience ps. I'm almost to the end of the video now it's something that I learned while working on a 7-3 with a good buddy of mine The older diesels really don't like either very much what you can do instead that works really good is soak a rag and gasoline and choke the engine with the rag it has the same effect as either but works a hundred times better on those old diesels
Hello my sweet. Your great grandma (in my heart) MamaCard here, sending love.
Glow plugs are like 12 bucks each or at least they were last I knew of
MOJO is the Man! Mortske is lucky to have a man with so much knowledge and Duff to open the hoods.
Another Great Mortske vid!!! 👍
Another Mortske & Mojo Monday! Thank you for sharing this adventure in the world of diesel!
More MoJoe please he's comical 😅
God bless you MOJO!! Old guys rock!!
Hope to see you more...
More Mojo! The local cattle buyer bought a 6.2 brand new . He was a character and would go to the curling club and it would idle while he played his game and had a few drinks. Someone asked him about that and he said he only shuts it off in the heated garage. He would go to an auction and it would idle all day while he bought cattle and be warm to go home. Which may have been 14-16 hours. When asked if he worried it would get stolen he said no. One winter and it was traded.
what a gem!
Thanks for another good one Mr. Mortske! Great to see you and Mojo working together on that ol' 6.2.
Our pleasure!
You're one of the few channels that I'll watch Repeats. That's fine praise for you, Thomas.
Thanks!

Late to your party and this might be in the other 1100 comments. Next time leave your glow plugs out and roll it over, easier on the starter and you can tell when the injectors are bled. When these were new the starters would not tolerate any abuse and we got in the habit of leaving glow plugs out when bleeding the injection system. I would loosen pump lines and hold the injection pump advanced as far as I could while somebody else tightened the bolts. Lack of oil changes was tough on timing chains.
alot thanks@
We’ve all been there, Mort-fighting with a motor we want to run, but just does not have the juice anymore.
Working along with you and Mojo and Duff Dog supervising was still a treat. Thanks, Mort!
Love the Duff!
The best part was one of Mojo's mumbled comments. Mortske said "It wont give me my socket back!" and Mojo quietly mumbles "Well, you cant sweat the small stuff." Pure gold.
