    My feet are aching
And your back is pretty tired
And we've drunk a couple bottles, babe
    And set our grief aside
    The papers say it's doomsday
    The button has been pressed
We're gonna nuke each other up, boys
    'Til old Satan stands impressed
And here it is, our final night alive
And as the earth burns to the ground
Oh, girl, it's you that I lie with
As the atom bomb locks in
Oh, it's you I watch TV with
As the world, as the world caves in
You put your final suit on
    I paint my fingernails
Oh, we're going out in style, babe
    And everything's on sale
    We creep up on extinction
I pull your arms right in
I weep and say, "Goodnight, love"
While my organs pack it in
And here it is, our final night alive
And as the earth burns to the ground
Oh, girl, it's you that I lie with
As the atom bomb locks in
Oh, it's you I watch TV with

Nothing rougher than to watch a new set of writers take a very good arc and piece it apart almost immediately after. It always makes it seem like the characters are idiots or got emotional amnesia.

The New 52 somehow managed to constantly be a disappointment. I have never seen a series so consistently go under everyone['s expectations time and time again.
And I was talking to a buddy about this the other week, why don't comics just do preplanned blocks? Like, DC resets every half a decade to a decade anyway, so instead of doing it because you keep writing yourself into stupid corners, how about you have a plan? And I don't mean a giant meta plot plan, I mean, you go "Ok guys, consequences matter and things are gonna stick. In this batman run we get 200 issues, Joker gets the death penalty on issues 65, and Batman gets to have his overall win by issue 200. Got it? Got it."
And then, when that's done, just... go do another self contained block.

I think some writers have tried that but it didn't work out in the end.
Honestly I put the blame on marketing/corporate mandates. It seems like a no brainer that if a book isn't selling well as is to tell the writer to stop doing whatever they are doing rather than wait for the payoff that may never come.
Or they want to cross promote another book/hero so now have to work in team ups so have to write around that. Or major world ending events in another book means the writer now has to address how the hero reacts to this new thing from another book.
Or a movie or game is coming out and they want it to line up with that.
I don't necessarily just say "corporate bosses are dumb", more like it's a consequence of having such large interconnected universes with heroes that face ever increasing threats

I liked that you included some of the interview with Meredith Finch. One of the other things she said at the time was that she had not read a lot of Wonder Woman comics and therefore she was coming in with a "fresh take." It always kills me when someone joins a beloved franchise with this mindset, thinking if they don't know what's already been done, then their unfamiliarity to the franchise will automatically provide a new and different perspective. As a fan of any franchise, I think any of us would cringe at that sentiment. I would say: if you're not going to do the homework, please don't proudly admit that you skipped it as a selling point. Frankly I'm shocked any time a new writer doesn't simply say "I've always been a fan and I'm excited to write for them!"
Another thing she said in an interview was that she wished she could have Wonder Woman wear a variety of costumes instead of always wearing the same thing, but she lamented that this decision was beyond her control... which made me laugh since her husband was the artist. Granted, they were likely instructed to keep Wonder Woman in the official New 52 costume (don't get me started on the blue boots and silver accents). The main thing about the art of this run was that Diana's face always appeared so child-like that it creeped me out.

I've found that I can thoroughly enjoy superhero comics as long as I stick to recommended collections. I recently picked up the complete Immortal Hulk, and it's wonderful. I don't need to know any of the surrounding continuity, I don't need to find out what happens next. Azzarello and Chiang's Wonder Woman was similar for me - all I really know about New 52 is that and Dial H (which I also loved). There's lots of great superhero comics, but I'll certainly never subscribe to a monthly title again.

one of the biggest gripes i had about this new run of wonder woman was the art. the first artist didn't draw her witrh an hourglass figure. she looked like she was physically imposing, actually had muscles, like a force to bereckoned with. it was awesome to see a different body type represented. a stocky body builder who *looks* like she could punch through a brick wall.

No. Just NO. This "body types represented" is utter woke idiocy. Heroes are supposed to be ASPIRATIONAL. If you are somehow "stuck" because you "don't feel represented" that's a woke mind virus YOU have to get rid of.
Or "I'll never be like this", especially in todays day and age, this is simple idiocy being taught.
Wonder Woman is supposed to be an icon of femininity. Anything watering that down for these destructive woke excuses has got to go.

Thank you for this! This run was horrendous! It is never explained how Diana was the end product of murderous rapists… ever. She was never established as an agent of peace as much as a fight thirsty warrior idolizing Ares. People loved warrior Diana with her sword for her bad assery as opposed to the character established over 50 decades. The image of Wonder Woman with a sword in one hand with a baby on her hip is not the vision I believe her creator had for her existence. Killing machine Donna Troy would not fit into Titans. And what was the purpose of being daughter of Zeus when there is almost no familial reward or real impact. Diana would protect the baby period. I found it distasteful that Diane now stole Cassie’s origin and is a female Hercules. The slaughter of the male Amazons just cause they were male was atrocious. So happy almost none of this era has an impact on the present.

Some of this "clearing the slate and undoing some character growth, then focusing on doing stuff because it's cool rather than trying to say something" is actually what I hate about a few runs I have read recently(ish). The one that really springs to mind for me is Donny Cates' Thor run, which really didn't sit well for me after reading every Thor solo from the destruction of (original) Asgard on, especially as Jason Aaron's run (flawed as it was) at least tried to explore/interrogate the purpose and role of gods, particularly Thor.

    • @cyberninjazero5659
      @cyberninjazero5659 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I'm sorry but if you're putting Jason Aaron there I don't see how you can have an issue with Cates. Aaron went back to Thors origin and clicked extend so it wrapped around his entire history before it, lessoning the impact in an effort to "explore" it goes from making his arrogance reasonable/expected to the tail of an idiot that never learns. Sure it gave us God Butcher but it's like the post Azzello Wonder Woman without the excuse of having lost the leading writer

    • @Tuaron
      @Tuaron ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@cyberninjazero5659 I'll start by saying my comment was in reference to Aaron's Thor run, so if the issue you are raising is the Phoenix thing from his Avengers run, I am not referring to that (though I think the response was overblown because Aaron was always going to work his way to the explanation he gave, or something like it). As for his changes to Thor's past within the solo run, I saw little that was really incongruous nor did I see the story of an idiot who never learns - in fact, it was very much about a person who learns and changes and adapts to his circumstances and experiences, even if he has some traits that will always lead him into trouble. Young Thor is brash and energetic, "current" Thor is more methodical and cares more about the people than the battle (though he is still an arrogant warrior at heart), and Old King Thor has a combination of weariness and arrogance from being one of the last people remaining (and so has not really been challenged in a long time). The biggest thing for me, however, is that it was all pointed, that it was purposeful - even if he was building to an "ultra bad ass" moment or making things a bit convoluted, it was because he was examining and interrogating the purpose and role of gods (particularly Thor and the rest of Asgard), especially when they are flawed beings. Thor becoming "unworthy" forces him to examine who he is at his core and eventually embrace being a protector and leader and how he can be those, the War Thor examines the bloodthirsty nature of warriors who cannot anchor themselves in more than just battle (and also how tragedy can drive people too far, which is mainly the Punisher story), Jane Foster Thor directly interrogates Asgard and its actions. I found no such redeeming themes or examination to Cates' writing, just "wouldn't it be cool if Thor got the power cosmic, then killed Galactus"-style thought. He came close to having a point with Donald Blake (especially after he was manipulated by Enchantress), but it stopped short of really having any meaning or anything to say except "ain't it messed up what happened to Donny".

@@Tuaron You can say that/read it that way sure but it's very clear in the flashbacks that Thor had an entire "worthiness" complex over the ordeal far back into his past. On top of that the entire point of his origin story is that he WAS arrogant and reckless. Making it so it's just a "Son didn't turn out the way his father wanted him to" story just cheapens it and dragging it so that the real version happened long long ago in the past isn't adding depth it's click & drag like if Punisher kept getting remarried and having children the keep getting killed off in criminal crossfire until one time it finally stuck, it just comes across as goofy and lessoning the original story. Walt Simonson's run on Thor in the 80s was life changing (yes, I'm old), and I remember being not only confused by but flat out hateful about the Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz run afterward. Hated it. We survived Ragnarok for...this? Ugh, no thank you.
Flash forward many, many years to Grant Morrison scaring the hell out of Marvel with his revolutionary X-Men run, only to have it immediately undone by Joss Whedon (at Marvel's behest, of course). Admittedly, I did enjoy Astonishing X-Men, but it was pedestrian compared to what it followed (note: I am not one of those people who thinks Morrison can do no wrong--but when he's on, he's mother-flippin' ON).
Much like Captain America, I can do this all day. The movie Highlander 2 crapped all over and (mostly) missed the brilliance of Highlander. Most things don't know to quit while they're ahead, "ruining" great stories/characters/etc, because y'know, business. Money to be made, or in the case of comics and wrestling and soap operas (the Siblings Three) there can never BE an ending because they're ALWAYS ending. Creators leave, but the property lives on...
But that does not mean that the amazing work done before all the aforementioned is "ruined" or "undone". Each property, like all things in life, are simply changed. And if/when we're lucky, it will be great again, just in a new way. PREFERABLY in a new way. Or it won't. But the greatness of yesterday is still there, waiting to be discovered and/or rediscovered. It's the way of things, valleys and peaks, yada-yadda...

New 52 ruined Diana’s character. Before it, and in her best stories, she represents love, peace, victory, and truth. This is represented in her arsenal and purpose in man’s world. She is specifically in man’s world to teach love and brings peace. Her lasso was known as the lasso of truth, and was primarily meant to make people be true to themselves. Her bracelets were the bracelets of victory, to show love always wins and to embody that she won’t stop until she wins. Her earth 3 counterpart had the lasso of submission. Specifically, submission embodies her evil counterpart and is nothing like the real Diana. Having her stories in the New 52 incorporate submission is a character assassination and makes her too close to what is meant to be her opposite.

The entire New 52 Wonder Woman was an abomination from beginning to end. From the costume, art, rewriting of Diana’s origin. Totally undermined everything about who the character was. New 52 is an era best forgotten ever existed. Erase from WW cannon forever

It was all over the place, but it was an interesting read.. the first time ever I bought so many WW comics & looked for to the release.. something I never thought would happen.. i hadn't been privy to her character being written interesting over extended period of time.. For instance, I can barely read an issue of it now.. there are spots of interests here & there, usually not for any entire issue for my tastes.. the forcing of previous status quo is ultimately a turn off, just with a few new characters here & there.

And again that's the reason why Wonder Woman fails because everybody comes in and restarts everything forgets previous storylines retcons characters history The lore or just whatever in general. And just expect you to just be okay with that and get right back into the story. This is why I Wonder Woman stop being interesting since the new 52 ever since the new 52 happen they have killed Wonder Woman and she hasn't recovered since and she won't until they stop doing stories like this and until they go back to what she originally was and not trying to make her some knockoff version of Xena Warrior Princess I'm sorry that's what it comes off as

The New 52 started with the run falling apart because Azzarello did not want to write the character. He wanted to make a bad greek tragedy featuring the character while establishing nothing for her "new status quo." Finch was a amateur writer that inherited a horrible mess.

Man... speaking of wonder woman, I'm so nervous for this new series by Tom King coming out. He's so hit or miss and he's said he didn't really want to write wonder woman... Trinity seems like such a half baked idea when Diana has 4 daughters already in different continuities... he's said that it will follow strictly Diana and won't focus on any of the 3 current wonder girls (Sorry yara flor)
I think we're expecting another flop coming up😭
