It was a real bummer that they were so determined to make this a Darkseid story, that they completely replaced Mongol in this story. Also, the lack of Clark’s character, his humanity, his connection to Lois where they know each other so well that she can tell who the real Superman is when she asks him to answer the question of “what his favorite book is.” It’s an adequate film. It’s just missing the stuff that made the story truly special.
Ya then trying to emulate the new 52 so hard with Diana and Clark being a couple really hurt them

I really like this version of Lois. She has agency, is able to act sad, be determined, Rebecca Romijn's voice is excellent and her chemistry with Jerry O'Connell's Superman (her real life husband) makes it really sweet.

I think the main reason I adore this film is just Superboy. Such an interesting character that really doesn’t get the attention he deserves. This is the only film he is in, and I really like this take on him. I wish it had been better paced, because the story about him being a teen celebrity and then being thrown away the moment he wasn’t popular anymore- I love that story.
Agreed. I liked this movie for their take on Kon too and the 5 minutes we get of Steel.
Except this version of Superboy is literally never going to be seen again in animation and is never going to get a happy ending. I have literally given up on DC everything since what happened to him in that horrible final movie. Lost faith in the brand entirely.
Most things in the DCAMU are just alright. I will say that I really loved how they handled John Constantine and also Matt Ryan's excellent performance didn't hurt either. Really hope for a video about him.

It got less and less impactful as it went on. War blew my mind, Death was great, Judas and Titans were pretty good, the bat family stuff was... Son was good but from Owls on it got confusing

In the "return of superman " comic beppos story always stayed with me...a dude who was grieving wanted to do what superman would want in his absence. He gets a track suit to make a super man cistume to symbolize doing it in his pals name and uses his lottery money to buy a bunch of loaves of bread and lunch meat to pass out sandwhiches to the homeless because its the best he can think to do at the time. And the people he gives food to scoff and belittle his efforts...and in response beppo apologizes explains he is trying his best and admits he's not really sure what to do...but he us going to do something cuz thats ehat his pal would have wanted...😢😂😁🥰
I wish we could have seen this version of Superboy have more time with Clark and the Titans
I'm glad we had movies in this universe that were the closest to how they were in the comics compared to other adaptions.
I still need to fully watch Death and this movie.
While it followed the stories fine, it was missing the heart of the characters that make the stories worth investing in. The DCAMU has one or two solid films, a couple handfuls of adequate films, and a couple plain bad ones. But most of them would fit in that solid category if that heart was present. The best DC animated films (and honestly most of the best DC films in general, that just happen to be animated) all exist outside of the DCAMU.

Now every time I listen to it I automatically think of superheroes
I will say this, the film's early bit handles the "Rise of the Supermen" arc better than the previous Death of Superman film attempt, which had to condense both storylines into a single film, resulting in there only being one Superman replacement, with Lex creating an exact duplicate of Superman, meaning the "world without superman" never really happens, as most folks think he just came back, while the audience gets to see the real superman recovering in the Fortress of Solitude. However, it did get less caught up in other storylines, such as needing to bench the JL, being a prologue for Dark Apokolypse war, etc.
It also lacked the really poorly aging 2016 election references, with Lex using a blatant parody of MAGA and the President being blatantly modeled after Hillary Clinton.
I own a special box set of this. And it's one of my favorites mostly because I loved the OG death of Superman. And then growing up and finding these remakes I enjoy them. Every now and then.

The movie certainly suffered from a good deal of bloat, and with no real good way to solve that particular issue; especially since Superman needs to stay out of commission for most of the movie. Though I think it could have been done if the movie focused on Steel, who would embody Superman's spirit and that would be the most important part; and it would leave a more cohesive narrative thread that leads back to Superman's return.
Another great depiction of Superman's death was in Justice League "Herefter" parts 1 and 2. My favorite episodes of that show. I think that could make a great video
If there's one thing this movie did it's make me want to see Cyborg Superman more outside the comics, he's just such an interesting villain... to a point, anyway. Gonna just ignore the repeated returns and upgrades and that stuff with the Sinestro Corps...

Yea, when the comics came out, it was obvious Steel and Superboy weren't the real Superman, which basically made it a toss up between Eradicator and Cyborg, this movie leans hard on Cyborg and makes it pretty apparent early on that it's not the Eradicator. They massacred my boy.
i was really bummed out by this story. You took the glory that is Cyborg Superman, Coast City, GL's drift into Parallax, The Eradicator being TERRIFYING...and people trying to follow Superman's ideals i the midst of so many fakes.
All into this Darkseid nonsense with the 'heroes who become portals"
Sigh... And then it led to teh Paradooms which... *HEAVY SIGH*.
There WERE good moments, but it just felt so hamfisted.
I still have a lot of the comics from the early 90s, I didn't expect a 1:1 adaptation, but I didn't like any of the changes here. Plus, they massacred my boy Eradicator. Sad too, because I liked the Death of Superman movie, but this fell short to me.

Also, I think the best superman movies/episodes are about Clark. Taking him out of the story takes away the humanity and dehumanizing superman into an idea, when in S:TAS he makes it very clear that Clark isn't just an identity but a core part of himself

So infuriating that they wasted at least 3 incredibly pivotal moments in the DC mythos on one Frankenstein'd monstrosity.
Three moments? They just did their own story with inspirations, it was about Superman finding his place in the world on how humanity viewed him, how Batman lost his way and finding it again, and it is about the beginning of something new. Besides, with someone as powerful as Superman around, you can’t really do much for an expanding DC universe when there is someone as powerful as him who could solve most problems.

This was a movie where you really remembered "oh yeah, this was based on a series of comic books released one a month"; the whole thing feels disjointed, more like a series of shorts mashed together than a single coherent movie.
A lot of the more recent DC animated movies seem to suffer from this.
I watched this duology back to back recently. Loved it. Seeing them for the second time there's so much to pick up on. Also it was great to have TDOS fresh in my memory, as I'd forgotten some of it's plot the first time I saw ROTS.
Notably I enjoyed Steel's story a lot more watching them back to back.

I'm extremely grateful this movie had my favorite type of characterization of Kon-El/Superboy: Silly Little Guy.
The reign of the supermen animated movie was a good adaptation of the comic, even with the differences. I like the death of Superman animated movie more, but the reign of the supermen movie was a good film worth the watch.

I prefered Reign to Death, but a big part of that was probably because I grew up reading the comic it was based off of so it might just be me already knowing so much of the story I was just happy to see these characters on the screen

Imo, watching the Frankenstein version of this movie and it's predecessor hashed together is perhaps the best way to watch the death and return of Superman on screen
This was a good adaptation, but i still like the one from 2008 better. Of the 4 times I've seen Superman dying that was the one it made more sense to me. And while there's no Steel, the Superman clone there is a good amalgam of the other 3 replacements. And it doesn't turn Lex Luthor in a member of the Justice League.
DC has two versions of this movie. One where Lex Luthor created Cyborg Superman, and this one where he created Superboy.

Well there was no room for Mongul to be relevant to the story, what baffles me is why they had to make Doomsday a carbon copy of DCAU Doomsday or Nuclear Man from Superman 4. And what baffles me more is that we do not even see any New Gods apart from Desaad, Darkseid and that big lady from Suicide Squad.

I can I enjoyed it more than most of the New 52 films. I liked all the different characters but bringing Darkseid back to it was a miss for me. The whole new 52 was just off. It had moments but it didn't feel worth it. My favorite of the films was JL War and Constantine's film. I can say Constantine's hit the most emotionally.

I didn't like this version of cyborg superman. He's portrayed like an enraged entitled child. In the comics he had a more legitimate reason to hate superman. It's something like supe's fight with doomsday interfered with his work in space. In the last few days of his life, his ordeal was so great that his face melted of and he declared that he mustn't sleep else he wouldn't wake up again.
He was also more independent, didn't rely on darkseid and they omitted out the part where he destroyed all of coast city
It really isn't even alright. It starts out fairly interesting and the fight involving all the superman in the middle was awesome. But the cyborg superman subplot was awful, he doesn't carry the movie as antagonist at all. His motives are stupid and tying Darkseid into it made it even more annoyingly inane.
This is my favorite version of Superboy, it's so much better than the boring unlikeable bitch that Young Justice has who is literally just Mako from Legend of Korra except sucks because there's no Wu or Bolin for him to bounce off of. I swore off DC comics, movies and series entirely after what they did to him in this series' horrible grand finale, that is how much I like this version of Superboy and wish they would show him as alive and well just one last time - to give him the happy ending he deserves. I just flat out hate Young Justice's take on Superboy. The two versions of Superboy should have swapped universes in my honest opinion.
