When it’s time to start it from the end
I want to, but no one really wants me
Turn it ‘round and try it all again
I want you when no one really wants me
    Is it just another disappointment?
I’ve become a footnote in your life
And I want to finally disappoint you, dear
    Am I wasting my time?
    I am wasting my time
Tell me, what’s the worst thing I could say?
“I want you, ” when no one really wants me
Tell me that you’ll have me either way
And I feel like no one really wants you
    Is it just another disappointment?
I’ve become a footnote in your life
And I want to finally disappoint you, dear
Am I running out of time?

Heracles killing his own wife and kids was Hera driving him mad to kill his family, it wasn't Heracles's fault.

@@danixove2358 I mean, iirc, Heracles is explicitly not informed of the ‘cause’ of the madness and repents, later to be killed by his last wife being _tricked_ into using centaur blood (apparently super poison) on his clothes as a gift and him expiring from that.
There’s enough explicit murder around that actual accidental homicide is (was?) _probably_ actually accidental.
Furthermore, a notable portion of the ‘worst’ of the god’s rep is due to a revisionist anti-authority writer named Ovid.

The New 52 may not have been my favourite era for DC Comics, but I will admit there were some standout moments here and there, Scott Snyder's Batman run, Geoff Johns Green Lantern, Shazam and most of his Flash run as well, and I can say that New Wonder Woman had some great moments as well, even though my favourite runs are still George Perez and Greg Rucka's WW runs.

I think the most hated New 52 stuff (far as I remember) would be Superman and the loss of the old Wally West (which...is not a pit of snakes I want to go into).

@@Tuaron Yeah. Believe me, Ive read some of those and boy they were hard to go through, although I do remember really loving Grant Morrison's New 52 Superman, at least the first volume, after that, I don't remember much. I'm also aware of how they convoluted Wally's place in the DC Universe for a while and fortunately, the character has made a huge comeback and resurgence in popularity, especially with Jeremy Adam's current run.

I know a lot of people believe that Batman was the best book out of the New 52, but I believe that this book was better overall. Yes, Batman had the best story arc in The Court of Owls, but after that original run, the comic took a bit of a nose dive in terms of quality. Stories like Zero Year and Death of the Family are great, but they don't compare to Court of Owls (Superheavy was just downright bad). Wonder Woman on the other hand was just consistently great from start to finish with Azzarelo's run.
I honestly, to this day, don't understand why DC retconned this amazing run into essentially being a fever dream post-New 52. I tried reading a few Wonder Woman runs after this but they just don't compare. This run is the best thing that happened to Wonder Woman IMO but I guess I am part of a minority that believed this.

I don't think it's underrated as much as divisive, and that division is earned. It would be different if it weren't Wonder Woman (or if it had been published as an Elseworlds), but as mainstream official canon, there was very good reasons to hate it, both for its rewriting of Paradise Island and Diana's origin, and for the way it made Diana a lesser character in her book.

@@johnthai6188 Sorry, I worded that poorly - there are, as I see it, two very distinct issues. Azzarello and Chiang's Wonder Woman made Diana a lesser character in the book titled Wonder Woman simply by making it such a strong ensemble book in which Diana's choices, actions, and fate were often overshadowed by other characters. The issue with changing canon is not that they changed it all, but that they 1) specifically changed Themyscira from a utopian paradise to a conspiracy to literally kill adult men and sell male infants into slavery and 2) made Diana the secret daughter of Zeus, and the idea of her mother fashioning her out of clay as a lie rather than an achievement. These change the entire premise from a celebration of pro-feminine independence into a caricature of violent anti-masculinity situated firmly in an order in which the prime power remains masculine. That's exactly the sort of changes that would be much easier to appreciate as an Elseworld than as the announced new status quo.

@@joelpartee594 as i've stated the NEW 52 was a change for status quo because it was a REBOOT. i feel like the characterization of diana, herself in how she acts, is very in character to how she is in this run. she is also independent: she's the one that holds the group together, she disapproved of the amazons way of life, was the one to reconnect with her Amazonian brothers, was the the key to the final battle etc. she is independent in saying there is a better way, than what history has shown us. the changes to the backstory to wonder woman doesn't inherently destroy the character, because the characterization is still feels heroic, and caring. like i would have expected wonder woman to kill hera for what she did to the amazons, but she doesn't. most of the geek mythology stuff in the run, feels more in line to how Greek mythology is: at least tonally. just because the main character's backstory is changed, it's more important to how these characters are characterized. sure the backstory to wonder woman was changed to be more "dark" in this run, but does that mean wonder woman herself has changed to become less heroic because of it: no. because it's about the heroic actions these characters take, rather than the backstory to these characters. through-out the run we see wonder woman as heroic, kind, caring and loving towards others: even if they shouldn't.

@@johnthai6188 Absolutely agreed on multiple points - A & C's Diana is a sympathetic and heroic character that I also cared about and rooted for, and she had some great moments in the run. I also agree that a reboot is wasted if everything about the character's backstory remains the same. A & C's imagining of the Greek pantheon is wonderfully imaginative and engaging, and feels both mythic and fresh. It may be my favourite versions of both Hera and Ares from any source all the way back to Homer. It's a very solid series that I hold in high regard, but that's not the same thing as saying I think it should be taken as canon going forward, and I approve the complaints that were mostly saying "this should not be the canon going forward". That's something that could have been avoided by publishing this differently - call it Elseworlds: Azzarello and Chiang's Old Gods featuring Wonder Woman, keep everything else exactly the same, and I'd have no notes.

I had no attachment to Diana's previous lore so I thought this run was great. I really liked Azz's take on the Gods and Diana, but I *loved* Chiang's art and his redesigns of the Pantheon. It's too bad this run will likely be forgotten as many Nu52 changes have been (and while I love Orion, I thought his portrayal here was a bit lacking - and his was the one redesign I didn't like)

You know, I get the impression from this video that it almost seems like you might believe Wonder Woman's depictions have never deconstructed Amazonian Society and their ideals before the New 52.
That's not really true, if so. They Amazonians have persistently been shown to be a idyllic but incredibly flawed civilization that commits horrible atrocities unseen by the outside world... usually against men. In a very real way, they often come to serve as a counterpoint for a sort dualistic view of sexism, especially post-70s Wonder Woman, by representing the other extreme. Diana is often this sort of model for female excellence, independence, and power, but at the same time, the civilization she touts also has historically driven washed-up, shipwrecked sailors back into the ocean to drown, or killed them if they failed to do so, simply because they're male... to give just one example.
Like a lot of idyllic societies in fiction, Themyscira and the Amazons are commonly represented as having a beautiful outside appearance but having deeply hypocritical or at least counter-productive ideals and beliefs.

    Lovely video.
I recently found myself agreeing with the somewhat embarrassing conclusion that love is ultimately the only thing that can save humanity from itself. Not fear, not ambition, or competition. Certainly not anger. Love is behind all positive change. It’s not an easy message to foster in the best of times or in the most enlightened places, so it falls on deaf ears, for the most part. Very often, it’s the love parents have for their children. But it’s also love of friends, love of pets, love of strangers, love of just existing. Trying to force back the darkness that threatens all the people and things we love is how good things get done. Wonder Woman is, as far as I know, the only popular superhero, and one of a tiny handful of fictional figures altogether, who understands this truth, and is willing against all odds to try to get this message across. I lament depictions of her that neglect, or even contradict, this essential element of her character.

I wonder why everyone calls Zeus out for sleeping around while ignoring the fact that Hera kills and torments his offspring. I mean, yes, infidelity is bad, but so is magically driving a guy into a temporary insanity to murder his wife and kids.
Just think about it. Hera is a goddess of marriage and home hearth, but she made Heracles kill his wife and children. It's not just way worse than sleeping around, it violates her divine portfolio.
Besides, given Hera's bevahiour, I wonder if she's a good one to be married to. Maybe Zeus sought respite with mortal women because he had none at home. Just saying.

@1:08 The perfect quote from Azzarello about this run. Translation: "I don't care about Wonder Woman; I just want to do a cool interpretation of the Greek Pantheon." (I was reading through the original Marston run of Wonder Woman when Azzarello's run came out, and it was painful to see how Marston's self-assured, beloved heroine had become a loathed hapless second-guessing gullible mess. But yeah, cool interpretations of the Pantheon, dude.)

    • @toddcarney6527
      @toddcarney6527 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@2:22 Another great Azzarello quote! Damned right it's not a superhero book. Diana isn't a superhero at all in this. She's mostly a loser throughout, who then grows to be Last Girl in a horror story by default that she's the title character, really in name only.

    • @armoghetto
      @armoghetto ปีที่แล้ว

Yep… he did not care about Wonder Woman, but he was ready and willing to use her book to tell a gritty story about the dark nature of the gods. The accuracy of this interpretation of the gods is interesting, but it is not sustaining to the rest of the DCU which Wonder Woman holds real estate. The Amazons pledge to keep a male baby alive but turn around & slaughter their newly found living male offspring. Yep, lil girls will want to emulate those characters. Parents can’t wait for that movie.
