  • Jessi shares some of the stories she's been told about sad or terrible things that have happened to animals. But, there's always something good that can come from every situation. So she also shares how to prevent the stories from happening in the first place.

My mom likes to tell this story about the time her mother found an escaped parrot. This happened in Massachusetts during the 1950's. After a hurricane, they found the escaped bird. They took the bird in and it soon became apparent that the bird could talk. It seemed to be reciting a phone number, except that it was one digit too short to be a phone number. My grandmother tried calling the number and trying different digits on the end, and eventually she ended up calling the parrot's owner! The owner had taught her parrot its phone number, but not the whole thing because she thought it would be too long for the parrot to remember.

My "horror story" is actually about my friend's hamster. She kept him in one of the tiny Crittertrail cages. I didn't realize how huge the problem was, even though I knew prior to this that it was a problem, until I babysat him over a vacation. He showed all the signs of stress and boredom he could show. Neurotic behavior, odd schedule, bar biting, and more. I couldn't take it, and finally just moved him into a home made bin cage, with an appropriately sized wheel and toys. His behavior changed instantly. He slept more, could finally run (his wheel was too small before,) and he wasn't as eager to come out to play. (Normal for a hamster!) When my friend came back she instantly saw how much better his life was in a larger cage, and agreed to take the bin, wheel, and toys I gave him. Now he lives in a large enclosure with a wheel he loves running on! (This is one of my favorite success stories ever!)

PurpleGamer YT what type of cage do you have? If the cage is above 450 sq. Inches maybe consider getting some more chews for your ham

Kimberly Evensen Umm metal bars and its quite small but it does have a wheel and a tube to go through and it has 2 chews

PurpleGamer YT is it by chance Critter trail? Cause those things are WAY too small. If you make a bin cage it would be lots better. Two chews is also not enough, you need enrichment toys as well.

I don't cook food with my bird out regardless. She's very food motivated and I'm pretty sure a lesson on cooking food at the stove would probably be well learned for her not to touch, but too late.

Also when you buy a oven ask the store to run it out the back a few times to burn the coating off ir do it in the shed if possible. Heard that horror story in bird communities too.
Oh, and NEVER run the self-cleaning mode with birds indoors!

I'm rather disturbed to know that the pesticides on food can be so high that it can kill a rather large animal with a single serving. Same goes for non-stick pans.

What takes a boatload to kill one animal can kill another in a few drops. Also, this is why we're told to wash our fruit and veg when we're growing up.

I commented this before, but I use to have a Bearded Dragon. The tank was near a large glass door and after a cold night we woke up to him dead. Of course being a lizard he wasn't actually dead and the cold just put him into a hibernation like state. We moved the tank to an interior wall to clean the balcony his tank blocked and went to work. The next morning he was fine and lived for many more years.

I used to have a hamster when I was 10, I researched about getting one almost everyday before I got it. Like what food I should give him, what cage he should be in, the type I vet I would need to take him to but when I got him, the people at the pet store gave my parents all the wrong information they made them but a small cage, unhealthy food, fluff, pine bedding and said that getting the toys was optional. I tried to tell them all that was bad but they wouldn't listen because I apparently was too young to know and that the people were pet professionals, he lived for 2-3 years but I always feel bad that he had the worst life a hamster could have.

Omg I am so sorry for you- My birds experienced similar but I actually didn’t have experience at the time. Only after a year did I do a lot of research so I somehow managed to convince my parents to get a bigger cage, more toys, better perched and I am soon changing their diet.

I used to have a budgie named hobby (he was found at a the hobby airport in Houston) and my mom had gladly adopted him and got a friend for him a few days later. Soon they breeded and hobby had started to develop a tumor which eventually killed him leaving the mother to raise the babies alone. When the offspring were old enough I made sure they were adopted by families that will care for them except for one that we kept as a tribute to hobby. It's enough for me to know that one survivor of hobby's bloodline is still here with me and will hopefully get offspring of his own someday.

I had pet rats in highschool, they're no longer around, because rats don't live that long, and highschool me was not able to give them the best care. They're bedding didn't get changed or cleaned nearly as much as I and I'm sure they would have liked, and I wasn't able to give them a very varied diet like I've seen you give rats at Animal Wonders.
They died of old age, most of them, one of them had an accident that she couldn't recover from. Though all of them got these little tumor things. I wanted to go to a vet and get them removed but my dad was pretty adamant about not taking my $5 rat to get a $500 surgery... I thought it was really cruel of him because though the tumors didn't seem to hurt them, they did impede mobility, and made it hard for them to get to food and water, so I had to move the bottle and food dish to accommodate the issue.
Basically I learned not to get a teenager a pet if you're not willing to provide for any needs that pet may have, no matter the cost of the pet, an animal's quality of life is worth much more than a few hundred dollars. As well as the fact that teens are not always the most responsible and though they may want to care for an animal to the best of their ability, your ability as an adult is still much more then theirs as a child.
I loved those rats, they were sweet girls and brilliant companions. I wish I had been able to provide for them better, and I wish I had been more wary to maybe prevent the one of them's accident.

ForestofTooMuchFod that’s bs. I’ve had rats that have had tumours that never ate anything touched by herbicides or pesticides. Rats develop tumours because they have extremely fast metabolisms. Fast metabolic rate = quick cell turnover so it’s a small step for them to develop as they age and errors start to creep into their DNA transcription, tumours which are localised cell overgrowth. It’s just the way they are,and remember, rats only live for about 2.5 - 3.5 years.

I hear horror stories every time someone finds out I have a hermit crab. The story is always the same, they had one when they were little, but it didn't last long. They are shocked when they find out mine is about 15 yrs old and the captive hermit crab lifespan is 20-30 yrs. They also almost never know that hermit crabs molt, which means their crab may have actually died, or may have just been molting and was presumed dead, which is far worse. I always try to educate them about hermit crab care and inform them that in my opinion, hermit crabs are not good pets, especially for kids.

We once sold a pony because he wasn't happy as a lesson horse anymore. We were told that he would be a kid's personal pony, a great plus for him, because he was more of a one-rider kinda guy. His name is Jesse. About two years after he left, my mom got an email from someone who was going to buy him and wanted to know his training. Before she could respond, the person sent us photos of a red roan pony who was just skin and bones: our Jesse. The person bought him, and after Jesse got into some trouble with the other horses, we bought him back. Jesse has made a full recovery, and appreciates his time as a lesson horse a bit more now. :)

I have a good "used to" pet story. When I was about 9, a pigeon hit our house and got stuck in a recessed window well. We managed to catch it and determine that its wing was sprained (NOT broken!). When we called animal control, they said the only thing they could do was put it down, so we decided to keep it until it healed and we named it Henry. It was late November in Minnesota, so we kept it inside. At first, Henry did not like human contact, but by the time spring came Henry's wing was fully healed and he would eat from my hand (though he wouldn't let me pet him). We let him go when spring was in full swing, but it was a wonderful experience learning how to care for an injured animal.

I volunteered in an animal shelter for over 3 years. I've seen first hand how cruel we are to the animals in our care. One of the stories that stuck with me most is someone trying to trade in their 13 year old poodle with a new puppy. We found a boxer tied to the door in the morning with a note saying she's too old and sick (she was all skin and bones) and they don't want her anymore.

I work in the animal industry too and have had presenting roles for an educational zoo like Animal Wonders, as well as for the PDSA and RSPCA. Especially when presenting to kids, "question time" always seems to turn into "I used to have a rabbit. But it died." Or you just get ridiculous questions like "can a cat hold a gun?" (asked by a five year old who had seen it in a cartoon and wasnt convinced it was real :P )

I used to have guinea pigs as a kid. Used to. We even bred them for a bit. But ultimately, we found ourselves running afoul of city ordinances, and had to find them all new homes. This story actually ends happily.
My grandmother owned a parakeet. It outlived her by ten years, dying in its 60s of old age. Just know that those are long lived pets before you take one into your home.
I also had a parakeet. I had no idea how old it was when we got it, but estimates were at 20 years. I know we had it for another 20 years before it died due to stress injuries incurred during a hurricane. We were deeply concerned about his health, but we could not get him to a vet because of the storm.

Apparently, there was a part of Los Angeles where someone's parrots apparently escaped. But for decades they like owned that area, they were like the local just wild parrots, only found in that small section. Thinking about it, they probably 'survived' by people leaving out food for 'em.

One of the budgies I had as a kid was one that had gotten away or been let go from someone. My dog was barking at it in the middle of the night in the backyard(in Florida)My first pet (a blue budgie) had recently passed away of old age at 13 and we had a cage and some supplies still. We put up fliers but no one claimed the green budgie and so we kept her and she lived another six years. I'm glad it was my dog who was familiar and used to birds from having interacted with my first budgie that found her and not another dog that would have killed her.

I have a happy "lost bird" story. It isn't actually my story, but I have a friend who has a friend who found a lovebird outside. It was winter and the poor thing was about half frozen when she found the bird in a snow bank. She never did find the person who owned the bird originally, so she kept it. Love birds aren't the best talkers, but this one learned to say "I love you" sort of to her new owner. As far as I know they are still best friends. I haven't spoken to her in years and I don't know how long lovebirds live or how old this one was when she found it, but this one had a very happy ending.

I used to doesn't have to be a horror story, some pets just die. I used to to have two guinea pigs called Speedy and Patch, one lived to 7, the about 7 1/2, and they were the happiest piggies you could have. I still love guinea pigs, so I'll naturally be drawn to them.

  • @goliathprime

Here's another horror story for everyone to learn from. When I was a young teen, I had two lovely pet gerbils and I was assured by the pet shop folks they were both girls. Well they weren't and they had 5 adorable little kids. We decided to keep all of them and just expanded their home. It was now two terrariums attached to each other by those small mammal habitats with the tubes. After about a year, the kids had kids and I realized that they were inbreeding. I tried to find someone to take the babies or the kids but no one wanted them, so I expanded the home even more to 5 terrariums attached with habitats. It was a huge area, surely more than enough room for only 13 gerbils - I thought. What I didn't know about was what happens to rodents when they get overcrowded. They become psychotic cannibals. One morning I went to check on them and it was a bloodbath. They had all gone insane and had torn each other limb from limb. Only a few were left alive and they were in shock. They wouldn't eat, wouldn't drink and died themselves a few days later.
Moral of the story, don't trust pet store employees to properly identify the gender of gerbils and only get one gerbil as a pet.

    • @chasedbyvvolves9256
      @chasedbyvvolves9256 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

don't only get one gerbil; like rats, they get really depressed when not with another of their species.

Sleepy Puppy My sister had one gerbil and it seemed fine. It lived 5 years, was friendly and when she finally died she did so with grey fur, in her sleep. If I had to choose between being depressed and being torn limb from limb and eaten alive, I'm taking the depression.

Gerbils are easy to sex if you know what youre doing. You should always keep gerbils in same sex pairs or groups. They're highly social animals, and depriving them of being able to interact naturally with other gerbils is just cruel.

Apparently they can be very territorial and aggressive toward each other, but if you have three or more they won't take the risk of fighting, so our owls got along (or at least tolerated each other) for quite a while until one died of natural causes. One of the remaining owls immediately seized the opportunity to eliminate her other rival. :(

We used to have mice as pets all the time. There was one pair of mice who died mysteriously the day after we brought them home. We couldn't figure it out for the longest time until I noticed what had happened. We had bought a wooden half tunnel which was made for lizard terrariums and thought it would be a great hiding place as well as something for them to gnaw on. As it turns out, the wood was coated or soaked in some kind of preservative to prevent the wood from rotting or splitting in humid places. This preservative was toxic to the mice. Lesson learned.

I used to have a parakeet, and I'm going to share this because it isn't a sad story :)
The poor thing had been born with several deformities. It couldn't fly and one of its feet was malformed. So, we kept him inside. This lead to him growing used to having us around. In fact, he soon learnt how to climb up our clothes and loved to sit on my shoulders and chirp on my ear!
He didn't live too long, he always was a bit sickly. We did, nonetheless, give him a happy life for as long as he stayed with us :)

Here's a non horror story, I used to have a lot of birds, but when my parents got divorced, we had to sell the house and didn't have room for them anymore, we got them moved to the local Fire Chiefs house and since they are friends of the family, I still got to see my birds if I came to visit and they lived a happy and fulfilling life, in a bigger enclosure with more birds, they have since died of old age.
Just because someone ''used to'' have pets doesn't mean the story is sad :)

A friend of mine once told me, that him and his twin brother used to have guinea pigs in their garage. After some time they started losing interest in them and one winter, when it got rather cold, they just refused to go out and feed them. The mother stuck to her eudcational plan of having only the boys take care of the animals and so, with no one in the house caring, they starved to death...HOW COULD YOU DO THAT? If you don't love your pets anymore, give them away, don't let them suffer and die! I still cringe at that story.

Here's a good story! My previous cat was extremely dominant and bossy, so when I first brought her home from adopting her from a local shelter (via Pet Smart) she would attack my feet basically every three steps, sometimes fewer, and if I moved my hand when she didn't want me to she would attack it then as well. After months of consistent discipline and warning sounds when I saw her about to attack (at that time I'd become expert at mimicking how cats tend to warn and discipline each other), she stopped attacking my feet except on rare occasion (especially when she was frustrated due to lack of attention) and I could typically move my hands freely around her so long as I made doubly sure not to move them too close to her face without petting her, which is something most cats don't take kindly to anyway.
Though she did revert to her old ways briefly when I left her with my roommate to visit my family for a week. However, upon my return her behavior instantly improved to the level I had brought it to before.

I get to hear similar horror stories from volunteering with an adoption/rescue group. You would be surprised at the kinds of things people willingly admit to doing to pets and wild animals while filling out an application to adopt a cat. Just when I think I've heard it all, along comes someone else with a new horror that had never occured to me.

We never imagined that one of our aquatic African Clawed Frogs could escape, but one day the largest was just gone. After looking everywhere, we gave up and assumed the cat ate it. But late that night, we found him all the way across the house, down the stairs, in the basement, with bloody knees and absolutely covered in lint. How he survived at all, let alone made it past the cat and downstairs, we’ll never know. But he lived another 2 years after that!

The problem with learning from your mistakes is that you’re not the only one who pays for them...
I’ve lost dozens of cats: they were outdoor cats so they only lived a few years each (Mostly run over)
I lost my dog: he was the runt & sickly from birth. I now realise he was from a puppy mill but I didn’t know that when I bought him at the pet shop, which was another mistake. He was mentally unstable & just started biting one day, it hurt our feelings (He was a Maltese/Silky terrier so he wasn’t going to kill anyone) & we eventually had to put him down when he got pneumonia & his Antibiotics weren’t working (He was in such pain)
I lost a bird too: I let a budgie with a tumour die slowly without treatment (I was a teenager & I didn’t think vets operated on birds)
I now have an indoor cat (also from a pet shop YEARS ago) she’s in equal 1st place for longevity. She’s alive & I can keep her that way... now. After so much loss & pain (I loved 99% of them & feel guilty for 100% of them) I constantly watch shows like this on TH-cam, Cable TV (animal planet) as well as network shows & I rent documentaries on iTV. My point is that I’m not a bad person, I love animals & I’ve learned the hard way to educate myself at all costs if I’m going to be any creature’s mother.

My cockatiel poppy flew off my shoulder one morning when I was taking her on a walk. We sat outside for hours with her cage outside hoping she would come back (I even missed school that day) and I heard her scream and we found her 30 ft up in my neighbors tree. Around 5:30 that evening my moms boyfriend helped me by getting the largest stick he could find and try and get her down with some Millet. That didn’t happen, instead she flew out of the tree and I ran after her. I am so thankful because she flew into my tree in my yard that was only 7 ft tall and I could climb it. I got her down and wow that was a hell of a day😰 I also had lost my hamster before 3 times in my house and found her every time! I believe we are lucky with our pets. And as I type this comment, my cockatiel is asleep on my shoulder in my bed😍

I know that this is an old video, but I had to share my anti-horror story. I was reminded of it after hearing the ever common story of "bird flies out door". We have a large tree in our front yard and one day, many moons ago, we heard bird sounds coming from the front yard. While being used to bird sounds where we are, this sounded like something we shouldn't have been hearing outside: a budgie. While we do have wild ones around here, we don't normally hear them. So when we investigated, at the bottom of the big tree, there was this tiny little budgie there. Scared witless I imagine, but very much alive. Another note, there are actually a fair number of cats in my neighbourhood. So we take the little thing in, give it water, keep it comfortable, and before long it was looking much better. We ended up keeping it for many years before old age finally took him, well, presume it was a he, never laid an egg, so took that as a sign. And the name we gave him? Houdini.

That poor gerbil! When I was younger, my last pair of gerbils (I haven't had any since, for various reasons) were getting old (and senile), and started getting bad habits. The one, aguoti brown male named Kinky (not in THAT way! ) because of the long-time badly-healed break in his tail that gave it a perminant kink near the tip (he had it before I got him), had the bad habit of chewing on clothing whenever I handled him...His black brother Inky developed the bad habit of BITING when he got too excited. Well, one day, my mom was holding Inky, and he bit her. Without thinking, she tossed him outside! I immediately ran to rescue him. Luckily he hadn't gone anywhere (probably because he was stunned (he was ok otherwise)), but he could have run off, gotten lost in the yard, and then eaten by a hawk or a cat or something. My mom later felt bad for doing that and apollogized.

My grandfather had a parrot that he used to take outside on a regular basis, with no problem. He also had tame ducks. The parrot was usually taken outside in the front of the house, and the ducks lived exclusively in the back yard, but one day my grandfather took the parrot out into the back yard to "meet" the ducks. The whole lot of them - three ducks and the parrot - immediately took flight together, in some weird multi-species flock, and flew away. My grandfather was devastated.
He went looking but couldn't find any sign of any of them and eventually came home. He decided to give the humane society a call, thinking that it couldn't hurt but that there would be no real chance that they would ever be found and said, "my parrot and tame ducks are loose, flying around someplace. I just wanted to report them missing on the slim chance that someone might call in..."
The lady on the other end of the line replied, "sir, you're not going to believe this..."
The whole "flock" had flown a couple of miles or so away and landed in someone's back yard. The resident, knowing for sure that a parrot and tame ducks shouldn't be flying around Ontario, Canada called the humane society. He was super lucky!
And the parrot never went outside again.

So, recently I've been coping with the death of my baby Kiki. She was also a Green Cheek Conure. I had two other pets in the house, Cody; an Australian Shepherd, and Lucky; a Jack Russell. Well, I went out of the room to use the bathroom. I must not have shut the door, because a few seconds later Cody ran into the bathroom and was whining. I also heard screeches and I knew something was wrong. I went into the living room and there it was. My baby was dangling from Lucky's jaws. Lucky has since been sent to live with someone who doesn't have small animals. I'm getting another conure, and hopefully this time I won't have to go through such a terrible thing again. I feel like I'm betraying Kiki by getting another bird, but hopefully she'll understand.

Wonderful information. I agree with everything you said, I have a Sun
    Conure.
Bird was a flyer, yet would not leave us, going everywhere with daddy. A trip they took to Walgreens, left me calling from home, feeling the trip was going taken too long. I knew the way he said hello, something terrible has happened. He said Bird was on top of Walgreens. The truck parked next to them startled her off, when the engine started. I told him not to loose site, I was on my way. In that moment I prayed, God told me if we did everything we could, He would do what we couldn’t.
I called the fire department, I arrived first, with no site of Bird. Once the fire department arrived they got on the roof, she was still nowhere to be found.
We drove around a one mile radius calling her name, squeaking her toys, and shaking her treats, no response. I took our family photograph, showing how beautiful she is, to the Walgreens photo lab. The Photo expert helped us create a simple 8x10 colored flyer, offering a reward without the amount. We then went to Office Depot creating 1000 color flyers. About 40 of them we had laminated to withstand weather. We created stop sign height with wooden stakes for our neighborhood parks. Covered every door for like a 2 mile radius. Grocery store parking lots, car windshields. Gas station windows and any other local business, with the agreement we would remove it once she was found. We got the exits for apartment complexes near us, Including flyers above there mailbox hubs. We got flyers to our local animal shelters/pet stores/Facebook pages.
Three days later on Monday morning we received a phone call, a young couple on their way to church the day before, a Sunday morning, the wife Looked out their third floor balcony window, there Bird sat, flying to her as soon as she opened the door! They saw our flyer the following morning.
Glory to God, she’s been back home going on two years. I’m still thankful daily, and still fight daddy to let me trim her wings, so it doesn’t happen again. Some people never learn.
I love sharing our story. God does answer prayers. Don’t be surprise if your answered prayer comes with a
shovel. If it happens again I would advise going to the post office and overnight mailing flyers for 2 mile radius. The way we did it cost us about $400 for all the flyers and a lot of physical time, walking. It probably cost another $400 to mail overnight, but I could be completely off. Pray I never have to find out.

I had a dwarf hamster when I was younger for about 4 years! He was great! He loved sunflower seeds and running on his wheel. He had a metal wheel that was very squeaky and he ran a lot at night so my mom tried spraying Pam cooking spray to stop the squeaking. It worked but also he liked to lick off the oil from the wheel. I thought he little tongue was pretty cute but who knows if it was actually bad for him. He wasn't very big so I don't think that small amount of oil made him obese or anything and he did live for 4 years which I think is a long time for a hamster..

I always talk to my kindergarteners about the “good snakes.” Of course we talk about the fact that all animals serve a purpose and should be left alone if they are not harming us or we can move away safely (we even have a resident spider in one corner of our room that just hangs out). It always bothered me that people will kill snakes just because. If you don’t like it then just leave it be. It will move on.

It has ALWAYS astonished me that the minute people cue in to the idea that I LIKE animals, they frantically trip over their own feet racing to tell me some HORROR story about them. So- first of all, what makes people think I want to hear that? And one of my favorite expressions regarding animal husbandry is "You're human. You're supposed to be smarter than the average (insert animal of choice here), so do you REALLY want to tell me how stupid you were/are? And it really continues to frost my flakes how dense some people truly are, and totally without empathy and Planning Ahead skills! 🤦🏼‍♀️

Working in the natural history museum and in a mini zoo, I always get cringes when people come up to me and ask:
    - Oh, you must know a lot about rats/mice/snakes/amphibians/ants, what's the best way to kill them?
When I go on to explain that there are no life-threatening snakes in our country, that all reptile and amphibian species here are threatened and have a protection status, as do many ant species, how there are much more efficient ways of keeping rodents away from your home than just killing them, and how traps and poison pose a huge threat to protected species of birds of prey and carnivores... Most often I get an answer on the lines of "I don't really care, those rodents/snakes etc. are just so yucky, I hate them!".

Ok so here is a nor so sad story. I once rescued a budgie who had appearantely flown away ...I put him in a towel i bought special fog that purpose and into my bag, since i had nothing special with me as I came from my nightshift. The poor thing was so hungry he held on to a cornstick for mice I had bought to catch him . He was then transferred into a cat cage until animal rescue arrived and took him. funny thing is I first expected them to catch him but when I called they said they would only come if I caught him and called again.
People saw me walking with that corn stick and the budgie sitting on top and asked me why I was walking around with
    " my" bird....
It was a cute little one , pale blue with white and yellow wings. I just regret I could not take any pictures because I was so exited , later tired and was afraid for the bird to try to fly away if I had opened the cat cage.
