      He did really well! We didn't cut out too much of his shenanigans. Mostly just a few extra attempts at getting the ear scope down his ear canal far enough, but you got to see his reaction to it and our successful attempt.

    Jessi would it be possible to do an episode about vet-care for uncommon animals? Most seem to be so focused on the normal pet/livestock species I find it quite hard to get a vet who is comfortable treating less common species of animals.
    Maybe the vet in the video can answer some questions about this? What preparations does she do when she hears a strange animal is scheduled for a visit? Are there animals she won't treat? What about illegal pets, does she report these to the authorities?

    I saw the patch during the Anthropomorphism episode, I thought you guys operated or took some hair samples from Chili Pepper, seems like everything turned out fine.
    Also I find that vets should be seen as a far more skilled profession than human doctors. They solve the same human health problems and more, across all sorts of species and have to deal with patients that literally won't listen and behave.

    My dog actually loves going to the vet. They feed her a lot of really nice treats and snuggle and pet her a lot. This is particularly funny because we have a very nervous poodle who gets the shakes over just about everything.

    I've brought my guinea pig to the vet on the vague symptom of "she isn't running around that much during her floor time," and both times it turned out she had managed to hurt herself jumping out of the litter box instead of walking out of it sensibly. It really can be incredibly subtle little things that are symptoms.

    Great episode. Sometimes even just a phone call to your vet could mean you get a first opinion about something, they can reassure you if it's nothing or ask you to go to the clinic if they want to check. I often call mine for my cat, most of the time I don't need to follow up with a visit because the issue is minor and we can handle it at home :)

    Almost 3 weeks ago I noticed my cat refusing his treats and not eating all of his dinner. I knew that cats are notorious for being finicky but my cat practically inhales any food given to him so it was very out of the norm for him. I immediately took him to the vet and learned that he had contacted heartworms. Over the next week and some change he refused to eat or drink at all and I was so scared that I was going to lose him. Thankfully my vet was able to get him feeling better and he's gotten his appetite back and is gaining back the weight he lost. Yay vets! lol.

    Hey Jessie, do you have any tips for helping animals overcome the stress of visiting the vet?

    • @Cal0Pat
      @Cal0Pat 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +mnunez1987 Get them used to the experience. Get them familiar with their carry-boxes (if they need them) and the car ride. Have car trips that are positive or neutral (ie go nowhere) rather than always to the vet or the kennel/cattery. Visit the vets all the time for non-charged reasons eg weight checks so they can be fussed over by the receptionists or nurses. Ensure that they don't always get a needle or a tablet every time they come. Discipline bad behaviour with good training and ignore fear behaviour rather than re-enforcing it with extra cuddles or attention. Touch your animal all over, train them to make sure they are happy with their feet or their ears being touched or their mouth being opened. Use calming products if you want to. And listen to the vet when you are there! Don't be offended if a muzzle, a nurse to restrain or even sedative drugs are needed, it is not a judgement on you or your animal (normally!), but it will let me get my job done quicker and safer (to me, you and fluffy) and the relevant diagnosis or treatment given to your pet.

    Do vets have to specifically study each individual species of animal or do they read up before a patient and use experience they have with similar animals? I can't imagine the good doc gets a ton of chinchillas.

    • @Cal0Pat
      @Cal0Pat 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Eric Loesch Depending on the university, we study a wide range of 'exotic' animals in more brief detail than the Big Six (dog, cat, horse, sheep, cow, pig). At Edinburgh, we covered to varying degrees: lagomorphs, rodents, ferrets, psittacine and passerine birds cagebirds, raptors, snakes, lizards, chelonians, goats, llamas/other camelids, deer, donkeys and fish including farmed fish as well as a general introduction to common wildlife species in the UK. But that said, when someone is booked in to bring me a degu for anything other than the half dozen common degu complaints you will see me reaching for my notes or a textbook to brush up on the details. Inter-species comparison also helps (ie intelligent guesswork). CP is a mara, of the suborder hystrichomorpha, so if anyone ever brought me one or I had to visit a zoo collection, I would extrapolate anatomy, physiology and disease assumptions from the closest species with which I am familiar - the guinea pig.

    • @animalwondersmontana
      @animalwondersmontana  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm so sorry. The other budgie won't die from sadness, but they can become stressed out from losing their companion. Make sure they have plenty of toys to interact with and if they don't have a fuzzy clothe (bird snuggly) the sleep in or next to, you can get them one so they have a "buddy" to snuggle with at night. If you don't know why your other one passed away, I'd take a trip to the vet to get this one checked out in case something is going on. Again, I'm so sorry for your and your bird's loss.

    I have to ask. Have you just accepted having animal hair/fur/feathers on you at all times? Do you have a few outfits that you like to keep in a special place so they don't get anything on them? I usually keep my suits in wardrobe bag to keep my dogs hair off of them (nothing worse than realizing halfway though a job interview that you're covered in dog hair). I'm guessing lint rollers are common place in your house :)

    You hope he never has to see the vet again? Don't the animals get regular checkups, though?

    • @animalwondersmontana
      @animalwondersmontana  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Dr. Card visits every few months to take care of Kemosabe's teeth and she does a general walk through of all the animals. But the animals don't need to be checked directly by a vet all the time (and the costs for that would be beyond our ability even with our increased fundraising efforts). They just need to be seen when something comes up. Which is why it's so important for us to know the animals' personalities so we can tell if anything is off. I have experience working in a vet clinic and learning from an amazing exotic animal veterinarian, so we are able to handle most medical issues at home. We needed to bring Chili Pepper into the clinic because there was a possibility he had something inside his ear canal which would require special tools and possibly anesthesia if he couldn't be restrained but still needed work done. I hope he never has something serious enough to be seen in the clinic again.
