I run a 32 11-46 casette on my 29er hardtail and can almost never hold on for 30km/h+ except descending. Well I disagree, a lockable suspension is not something you normally find around this level, since the fork itself cost around 150€ if not more. Add to that, Wheels, transmission brakes, frame and profit you probably won't find it under 4-500€ if evertyhing else is around the same level.

Hello there, I definetly recommend size L If you have trouble with the upper body I suggest the riverside 500 it's more upright than the rockrider line up. However it is still the best idea to test both.
@@LifeofMaik Excellent thanks! Quick follow up qus - which of these (RR 530 or Riverside 500) has a lesser reach? I'm assuming the one that has the least reach and maximum stack will be most upright and comfortable. Wanted to try the bikes as you suggested but none of the stores near me have the bikes in the right size on display to test unfortunately.
I can't tind any geometry which is useful for the riverside 500 or 900 which share the same frame. You're on a good path but reach isn't everything since you're not standing that much like in Mountainbiking. I assume the riverside will even be on the longer side since the head tube angle is steeper, so the bars will be further away hence stretching the reach. Play this trough with your hands one being the seat tube one being the steerer tube and tilt them you'll find out that on mtb with a slack head angle you'll need a bigger reach to remain the same effective length for your upper body
Most tyres have an indicated direction, if it is mounted in a way that the wheel spins opposite of the direction it is supposed to be, its wrong. It is easy to fix that by simply taking the tire of and flipping it.
Kind of yeah I doubt you'll top out seating or even standing on flat. However downhill on taremec or fast forest woods you can spin out. I run the same 32 to 11 ratio on my Hardtail and don't have problems I just pedal faster
The shifter is also from the Microshift Advent group. Did you know the 520 and 530 have exactly the same lowest gear ratio with their different transmissions(0.78 and 0.79)? The 520 has only an advantage on higher speeds :) It’s a good review! just pay attention to your articulation, sometimes it’s harder to understand certain things. :)
Thank you for your feedback I will try improving my pronounciation and articulation. I have different calculations For the 520 we have a 22 chainring and a 32 cog so 22/32 so a 0,6875 ratio The 530 has 32/42 so a 0,7619 ratio This is a difference around 2 km/h or 1,25 mp/h Which doesn't sound much except it's going up steep. Thanks for watching Which doesn't sound much,
LifeofMaik You are right, I selected a 24 instead of a 22 (I know it’s a 22 but people make mistakes at 2 AM :D ) On the gearing calculator that makes it 0.71 for the 520 and 0.79 for the 530 with 27.5 wheels.
I'm living in France for 5 months and I looking for a bike to use every day to go to work here. I need to bike on a couple steep hills on a normal road, would this bike handle this. Or can I better look for a different bike.
The bike will handle it, however a riverside or triban will do the job as well and it will be a bit faster since this is a mountainbike and is therefore slower.
@@LifeofMaik Thank you! I'm gonna buy this bike this weekend because I want to get into mountain biking on some easy trails, and if I like it I can invest in a good mountain bike once I back in my home country. Last thing, the ST530 is now on sale. But on the version that is on sale, there is in the description that it has mechanical brakes instead of hydraulic brakes. And other ST530 listing at their site does have hydraulic brakes. Is this just a fault on the website or are there different versions of the ST530?
Exactly there is a MDB version (mechanical disc brake) and the normal version, if you manage tho get the hydraulic version for let's say 20 bucks more, definetly buy that one
@@LifeofMaik Thanks a lot! I will be buying it tomorrow morning. The difference in price is 50 euro so I will get the cheaper one as I will be selling it again after 5 months. And if I like it, invest in a proper mountain bike when I'm back
Thank you. There is no way to tell that, Decathlon says XL from 1,85 upwards. I'd say to try both out, the XL is worth the consideration. Alternatively: For a more upright and comfortable position L For an more aggressive position go for the XL
That's actually a great question. The difference in between these bikes is the shimano hollowtech crank and the fork which you can lock from the bars. Other than that it's the better choice to buy the 540 if you need the range coming from the 2x system If you don't need the range and don't want to lock the Suspension out the 530 is the better choice
Yes and no You can Upgrade it to a any fork but rockshox has little forks without a tapered shaft. So yes you can get an airfork but a more budget fork
@@LifeofMaik I know it's an old comment, but there are adapters for turning non-tapered shaft to accommodate tapered fork. It can be done, just check everything first before buying.
@@white_shadow_123 That's true however, getting these, not only increses the price for the new fork since you need extra bearings, you also change the geometry. another point is that the least people who will get such a bike are capable enough to do it themselves, and decathlon will certainly not do this for you. a bike shop maybe, but again this will increase the price quite much again.
hello, im 175cm and 13 years old but im still growing a bit so im not sure if i should get l or maybe even xl? i dont wanna buy another bike for atleast 2 years but i think l is good enough i dont think i will grow more than 185

@@dep1x Well yeah the tyres aren't the best that's normal especially for this price. Just ride them till they fail and get a somewaht decent pair, you'll save weigth and speed but the midlevel price (folding tyre) is around 20-25 per tyre.
Hi Maik , I am from India and I am planning to buy ST520. I see that ST530 is not yet launched on Decathlon site. So what are your views about ST 520. Its equipped with 24spd. SRAM X3 - Rear Derailleur and Shimano Altus - Front Derailleur. So what are your views on the 1) Frame quality(Is it good for off-roading), 2) Gear shifting(As I see in this video the chain came off from the socket. Do you think it will be the same with ST520) 3) Braking(Mechanical Disc) and Suspension(80MM. Are they SR Suntour?)
Hello Rahul, The frame is okay for off roading a bit older geometry but it works, however, the frames of the World have 520,530,and 540 are the same so no benefits here. Yes the chain came off although I shifted really rough. I prefer the 530 however during normal riding it won't be much of a problem. The hydraulics of the 530are way better for maintenance no questions asked, the fork is not a suntour and is mostly the same as a "decathlon" fork except some features
@@LifeofMaik Hi Maik. Thank you for the response. So you think the chain can come off in 520 as well say if there is a sudden jerk while off-roading ? I think all brand cycles can have the same issue then. And your quick view on gear shifting , braking response and tyre quality in 520 ?? Also suspension on 520 would be okay while going off-road ??That would help me in whether to go with 520 or not.
You'll more likely lose the chain on the 520 the drop on the 530 was because I had the ckutch turned off. The tyres are the same, brakes are better on the 530 the fork as well.
Hi man ! I'm about to buy this monster. However i'm wondering if this fits me like child bike. (I'm 1.8 m) Bcs it has 27.5 inch, if only Rockrider had 29 inches :(
Good and bad news Good news your size still fits, many bike manufacturers are still releasing 27,5 inch for a more nimble feeling. Bad news They won't build a 29 soon because the wheels would be extremely heavy and/or weak. 29 inches are only available in their xc range.
@@LifeofMaik Ah okay thanks. I think decathlon provides users to select sizes due to your body lenght, it is S, M, L and XL maybe; i curious about what do they change in bicycle body except wheel size when you select this sizes (27.5 and cant be changed you said) ?
Exactly changing the wheel size isn't possible. What changes is your seattube length and your top tube length. This simply means your bike is higher and longer for your body. Sometimes they also change stem. Length (to stretch your arms a bit more). With 180cm L is bang on. With many different manufacturers you may tip to the m frame but that's another topic and is brand and bike specific.
@@LifeofMaik Man exactly you helped me a lot, i'm about to buy a MTB but couldn't determine much. There are some Turkish and italian brands too i look for. Hey, so the 540 V2 is better than the 530, it has a bigger cassette, a lockout fork as far as I know and better rims. The question is if you need it. For someone who just rides from time to time I'd say no, but if you want to dip into mtb riding it's worth it. I Hope it helps
Hey there If you're still growing get L If not try both If that's not possible either, I'd go for L, especially if you have a longer upper body or shorter legs (you can measure your seamlength and check online)
I know that is is late, but maybe if will useful for others. I am 176 and bought the M. It is much easier to control for me, much comportable. The L size was way too big for me. :) (ST 530s)
Some tyres have a different direction forfront or rear mounting. As fas as I know, Decathlon has them as well, but I didn't look to closely to be honest
If you live near steep hills or have the budget the 540 V2. The shifting is a bit better and your cassette is bigger. If not I'd go for the 530 with hydraulic brakes. It is a slight downgrade but you save around 10%. Right now where I live there is a discount 400€ 530, 430€ 540. In that case 540 for sure.
@@LifeofMaik Thanks for the reply. In my place 530 costs 400€ and 540 costs 450€...actually now I have brand new st120 but I consider returning it and I dont know which would be better to buy 530 or 540. I want to ride in woods mainly but nothing extreme ...just normal hills and classic cycle forest paths (maybe st120 would be sufficient too). The only thing I see better in 540v2 compare to 530 is that suspension can be locked at 540 but I dont know if I really need that. What you think ?
The 120 has the downside that there are no hydraulic brakes and no derailleur hanger. I advise that you upgrade the bike. The lockout on the suspension is only necessary if you ride uphill for a longer time or a lot of uphill standing. As stated the main difference I see is the gearing. If you ride long somewhat steep uphills, normal but steep uphills, or are relatively unfit, the 540 is the better option because of the wider cassette. You probably won't notice much of a difference when shifting on a day to day bases. Downhill are both bikes similar, if you get the hydraulic disc brakes for the 530. Short: If you ride steep stuff uphill, or want the option of an easy gear, 540. If not you can save the money and go for the 530. Or simply choose the bike based on style if you can't decide.
I want to buy myself this bike.im not into bikes and i dont know english very well can you just tell me is it good for that price, and explain what that clutch is?
For the price the bike is outstanding. I would not recommend drops since the fork is quite weak, but a drop or two won't kill the bike. Since there is only one shifter yeah he works quite good, just not comparable to Shimano.
@@LifeofMaik and i meant drops like to ride on stairs down. And if i do drop its gonna be 2 or 4 stairs maximum. And i said both shifters because i meant the one at the back and the one you shift up or down
Now I understand. Alright so the shifter (front) works fine its just not my kind of shifter but that's personal The derailleur (rear) works pretty good so no need to worry. And yes a drop from 4 stairs will be completely fine. Riding stairs however will work, but will use the fork quite strongly, after some time the fork can develop play but that's normal for this price point and you should be good for most of the time.
Hey man, tjanks for the great video. I'm 173cm tall and just got into cycling. Am wondering if I should be looking at 29ers some day or am I too short for those? Also, for a similar price, would you say the 530 is the best in the market or are there other entry level mountain bikes which I could consider? Thanks!
Hey Nicholas, great questions Starting with the simple answer, the 530 is in my opinion the best new bike in this price point, let's say up to around 500€ (especially if you're willing to change tyres at some point) Now to the 29er I wouldn't say you are too short for them, I would say this depends on you're riding style. If one day you want to be more playful on the bike a 27,5 bike could be beneficial. however if you're more into getting miles in or cross country riding or technical terrain 29er simply roll better over stuff and are faster for these applications. I hope this is a good enough answer, if not, feel free to ask for more details.
@@LifeofMaik oh wow! Thanks so much for your quick reply! Your advice is definitely helpful. What are my other options if I'm not looking at new bikes?
@@NK3538x No worries! That's impossible to say. You can get a bargain and get a 2 year old "beginner" 29er mtb from Giant, canyon cube or what else with an XT drivetrain and an airsprung fork, but this depends on your, area and luck.
@@LifeofMaik Hey man, I found a used 560 (2018) at around the same price as a new 530 here. Would that be a better bike than 530? I note that some reviewers say decathlon bikes are more worth at the lower end only.
To be completely honest I would go. For the 530, save the remaining money for upgrades if wanted or the next bike The 540 doesn't stand out that much comparing to the 530. Maybe next season they will make a newer version. The only major benefit is the hollow tech crank on The 540. But that's it.

I see U have size L. How tall are you ? I am 184cm and it is between L and XL. Ofc on my local decathlon store 520,530,540 are sold out so I am not able to check it :/
I'm 179cm If you're not sure about your size, measure and compare your seam length If you have longer legs and a shorter upper body go for L Vice versa XL
@@LifeofMaik thx for fast reply. I have to check that. Most of bikes fit in size L for me (19"). To be honest, I almost bougth giant talon 2ge (29"). Better things inside ect. But on the other hand, I need bike only for city and forest (60%/40%) without any jumping. Ehh... it is not easy choice
Comparing these two is kind of unfair the giant is literally double the price of the rockrider. I'm all for a 29er But a 1x drivetrain is simply better except you live in a fairly hilly area. If you would consider yourself fit or in a relative flat area points would go to the 530 If you plan on riding more in the woods, or need those easier gears the giant is a better choice. Especially if you compare the frames. If it's a commuter bike account that you will wear off your drivetrain way faster and it could get stolen. So then the 530 might be a better solution.
@@LifeofMaik hah, I know it is unfair! That's why it is hard to decide :) Spend more money for "better" bike (29", alivio, deore, better dumper) but on other hand probably I dont need better bike. The probably is a key here. I am completly amatour who has enougth sitting home (homeoffice) and want to go to normall office (bus or trum is nightmar with mask and overcrowded) and time to time to forest for fresh air (2x in week). I live in completly flat area. I have not used bike since ... hmmm.. at least 4years! Also it would be my only bike, so as you mentioned - It could be stolen when I would be in work. Price for 530 is 313GBP vs giant for 570 GBP. Price is almost doubled (82%). The idea is also UNIBIKE SHADOW (29' altus, 3x9 gears, 440GBP) - looks like compromise between btwin and giant, but I never heard about "unibike" brand.
I never heard of unibike as well. For me it sounds like a dilemma. a 1x drivetrain is less maintanance, the fork of the giant is better and the frame, not to mention the 29er I would decide based on budget, (what do yo want and what can you afford to spend (dont forget you need a proper lock, a helmet, a pump, basic tools)) If you have enough money ask yourself, if you will ride in the forest, where it is more bumpy or some trails, if yes then the giant, you can ride mountainbike trails on it. If not, the rockrider, simply because it has everything you need. 29 Would suit you better due to your size, but 27,5 has it's more nimble characteristics, which are better for city riding. You can steer faster and accelerate faster.
Well to some degree that's normal, you have additional weigth on one side (the shifter). It could however be a) That the fork and handlebars are just not perfectly straight (you can easily fix it) just hold your front tyre between your legs and adjust the bars. Alternatively loosen the clams (you can be more precise that way) and adjust it. b)It's possible that the headset is indexed (too tight) to fix that loosen the clam screws on your steerer tube and the headset screw (on top). After that, tighten it slowly and rock your fork until there is not play left. You can adjust your weight or ride faster to ride without hands as well (I should probably make a video baout thatn thanks for the hint)
Hello there, Faster than which bike? the 520? No for the gearing, but that only counts if you are able to pedal hard enough to maintain around 30km/h for a longer time, so no worries for the most people including me. everthing is is the same. Yes the 530 shifts way smoother than the 520 and you will notice it.
You have 3 options if the size is okay 1. Check if you have spacers left over the stem (rings over the thing that holds your bars) (cheapest) 2. Buy a new set of handlebars with rise (expensive) 3. Get used to it (maybe the best idea if the size is right)
The video is two years old, it could be that they changed it after a while. Just like the 520st which had a sram shifter and derailleur instead of a microshift
It depends on your understanding of fast 30kmh on a flat or even 35 Yes 20 on a rough section Kind of but not for long and not safely This is not a bike to max out the speed but on a more modest road you can go easily up to 30km/h
I read on the UK decathlon website that it is really slow like 10mps tops. I am realy concerned about it and whether to choose this one or the 520 model.
@@nikolayiliev9793 I could go 20 miles an hour with adequate pedal frequency. Yes you can get a faster top speed, but the least people will pedal that fast on a straight line.

They have in theory a better suspension which can be more or less dialed to your weight. The 520 is lighter The 530 even more. But not always is lighter better. Just in this case
Nah Cmon instead of 32 teeth you now get over 40 that's a huge improvement. And any decent mtb has only one front gear so that's not really a downgrade
Well I have a hill with an avarage gradient of around 21% and max gradient 33% (gps) and I can ride it up in the wet with a 32-46 so I call this statement wrong

I doubt you'll top out seating or even standing on flat.
However downhill on taremec or fast forest woods you can spin out.
I run the same 32 to 11 ratio on my Hardtail and don't have problems
I just pedal faster
The shifter is also from the Microshift Advent group.
Did you know the 520 and 530 have exactly the same lowest gear ratio with their different transmissions(0.78 and 0.79)?
The 520 has only an advantage on higher speeds :)
It’s a good review! just pay attention to your articulation, sometimes it’s harder to understand certain things. :)
Thank you for your feedback
I will try improving my pronounciation and articulation.
I have different calculations
For the 520 we have a 22 chainring and a 32 cog so 22/32 so a 0,6875 ratio
The 530 has 32/42 so a 0,7619 ratio
This is a difference around 2 km/h or 1,25 mp/h
Which doesn't sound much except it's going up steep.
Thanks for watching
Which doesn't sound much,
LifeofMaik You are right, I selected a 24 instead of a 22 (I know it’s a 22 but people make mistakes at 2 AM :D )
On the gearing calculator that makes it 0.71 for the 520 and 0.79 for the 530 with 27.5 wheels.
the shifters are really good as well
I'm living in France for 5 months and I looking for a bike to use every day to go to work here.
Is this just a fault on the website or are there different versions of the ST530?

stupid question, why I should spend money for the 540 instead of picking this one?
That's actually a great question.
The difference in between these bikes is the shimano hollowtech crank and the fork which you can lock from the bars.
Other than that it's the better choice to buy the 540 if you need the range coming from the 2x system
If you don't need the range and don't want to lock the Suspension out the 530 is the better choice
@@LifeofMaik thanks man, you great, subscribed.
Is it possible to upgrade the fork on this bike to some rock shocks or the like?
Yes and no
You can Upgrade it to a any fork but rockshox has little forks without a tapered shaft.
So yes you can get an airfork but a more budget fork
@@LifeofMaik I know it's an old comment, but there are adapters for turning non-tapered shaft to accommodate tapered fork. It can be done, just check everything first before buying.
@@white_shadow_123 That's true
however, getting these, not only increses the price for the new fork since you need extra bearings, you also change the geometry.
another point is that the least people who will get such a bike are capable enough to do it themselves, and decathlon will certainly not do this for you.
a bike shop maybe, but again this will increase the price quite much again.

st120 or st530? Is it worth it the price difference?
I would buy the 530
Hydraulic brakes and a wider casette is definetly worth the money and a good investment
Hello Rahul,
The frame is okay for off roading a bit older geometry but it works, however, the frames of the World have
520,530,and 540 are the same so no benefits here.
Also the shifting is smoother.

microshift advent vs shimano acera?
Hi!! I want to buy their all terrain tire 27.5x2.1. Do you recommend it? Tire looks okay for me.
I wouldn't recommend it.
Better go for a real tyre brand like Maxxis, Schwalbe, Continental.
Way better grip for less rolling resistance.
@@LifeofMaik Wow! Thank you for fast response.
Hello I have a queostion is it to heavy for driving with one wheel or it is good?
No bike is too heavy to wheelie on, in fact the rockrider is quite easy to lift the front so have fun poppin' those wheelies.
Does the suspension (spring dissipation) slows you in ramps, uphill?
Yes, since this fork has no lock-out, you will loose some energy, but only standing or pumping since the fork isn't too sensitive
Depending on your weight. Set it to higher kilograms if you are more lightweight. Then it works better uphil
Hi man ! I'm about to buy this monster. However i'm wondering if this fits me like child bike. (I'm 1.8 m) Bcs it has 27.5 inch, if only Rockrider had 29 inches :(
Good and bad news
Good news your size still fits, many bike manufacturers are still releasing 27,5 inch for a more nimble feeling.
Bad news
They won't build a 29 soon because the wheels would be extremely heavy and/or weak.

The question is if you need it.
For someone who just rides from time to time I'd say no, but if you want to dip into mtb riding it's worth it.

I'm 173 cm and im considering getting this bike but i can't decide which size to get. M or L?
Hey there
If you're still growing get L
If not try both
If that's not possible either, I'd go for L, especially if you have a longer upper body or shorter legs (you can measure your seamlength and check online)
I know that is is late, but maybe if will useful for others. I am 176 and bought the M. It is much easier to control for me, much comportable. The L size was way too big for me. :) (ST 530s)

Try the weight adjustment on the right side of the fork

I'd prefer the 530.
st 530 or 540 v2? What is more worth buying ?
It's good for the price
The clutch reduces the chain "jumping and slapping"
There is the slow motion to show you the difference.
@@LifeofMaik So should we keep the clutch activated all the time during trails? Or will that not allow us to change gears?
Keep it on all the time, except when you remove your wheel.
It has next to no influence on the shifting
Anyone know how wide the rear dropouts are? Thanks
So the bike is good right? And i want to know if u do drops with it is it going to be okay? And if both Shifers work great
For the price the bike is outstanding.
I would not recommend drops since the fork is quite weak, but a drop or two won't kill the bike.
Since there is only one shifter yeah he works quite good, just not comparable to Shimano.
@@LifeofMaik okay thanks
@@LifeofMaik and i meant drops like to ride on stairs down. And if i do drop its gonna be 2 or 4 stairs maximum. And i said both shifters because i meant the one at the back and the one you shift up or down
Now I understand.
Alright so the shifter (front) works fine its just not my kind of shifter but that's personal
The derailleur (rear) works pretty good so no need to worry.

Thanks!
Hey Nicholas, great questions
Starting with the simple answer, the 530 is in my opinion the best new bike in this price point, let's say up to around 500€ (especially if you're willing to change tyres at some point)
Now to the 29er
I wouldn't say you are too short for them, I would say this depends on you're riding style.

If you have longer legs and a shorter upper body go for L
Vice versa XL
@@LifeofMaik thx for fast reply. I have to check that. Most of bikes fit in size L for me (19").
To be honest, I almost bougth giant talon 2ge (29"). Better things inside ect. But on the other hand, I need bike only for city and forest (60%/40%) without any jumping. Ehh... it is not easy choice
Comparing these two is kind of unfair the giant is literally double the price of the rockrider.
I'm all for a 29er
But a 1x drivetrain is simply better except you live in a fairly hilly area.
If you would consider yourself fit or in a relative flat area points would go to the 530
If you plan on riding more in the woods, or need those easier gears the giant is a better choice.

For me it sounds like a dilemma.
a 1x drivetrain is less maintanance, the fork of the giant is better and the frame, not to mention the 29er
I would decide based on budget, (what do yo want and what can you afford to spend (dont forget you need a proper lock, a helmet, a pump, basic tools))
If you have enough money ask yourself, if you will ride in the forest, where it is more bumpy or some trails, if yes then the giant, you can ride mountainbike trails on it.
If not, the rockrider, simply because it has everything you need.
29 Would suit you better due to your size, but 27,5 has it's more nimble characteristics, which are better for city riding. You can steer faster and accelerate faster.

Do you mean the handlebars when lifting it from the ground or during a wheelie?
@@LifeofMaik no just when you lift it up standing still like it leans right like its unbalanced or something
@@LifeofMaik almost like the weight of the fork from the weight adjuster pulls it to the right. Making it difficult to ride without hands
Well to some degree that's normal, you have additional weigth on one side (the shifter). It could however be
a) That the fork and handlebars are just not perfectly straight (you can easily fix it) just hold your front tyre between your legs and adjust the bars.

Thank you decathlon for the downgrade ❤️🖕
Nah Cmon instead of 32 teeth you now get over 40 that's a huge improvement. And any decent mtb has only one front gear so that's not really a downgrade
If you don't put 50 behind you don't climb hills
Well I have a hill with an avarage gradient of around 21% and max gradient 33% (gps) and I can ride it up in the wet with a 32-46 so I call this statement wrong
