    Aes is one of the GOATs. His music really shines when you actually let the lyrics stew in your brain for a bit. He absolutely was a slow burn for me, I liked some songs here and there due to the beat/sound, but as I heard it more and more it really started clicking and I went down the Aesop rabbit hole and never looked back. I don't really use this word, but I really do think he is a lyrical genius.

      The craziest thing to me is how effortless and advanced his vocabulary is! I can generally tell when someone artificially inflates their vocabulary to appear articulate and smart, but usually this results in awkward word choice and doesn't feel natural. I would imagine most people notice this, I'm not suggesting it's unique to me...
      I have never gotten the impression that the vocabulary in Aesop's songs is artificially inflated, it's almost like that his just how he talks everyday (This may be true?). His vocabulary isn't so advanced to portray how smart he is, it's about precision and accuracy to make the lyrics more meaningful, not distract from them.

      @billbill6094 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Aes is a monster but I hate that clinical way of viewing his music, or music in general. He could make an album only using the 3000 most common English words on purpose and it'll still be unlike anything you've heard before.

    • @ProudFilthyCasual
      @ProudFilthyCasual 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@billbill6094 That's because the original comparison in that study has been left out and bastardized over time. The original study, which wasn't centered around Aes at all, simple found that he has used more words than not just any other rapper, but the most famous writers in human history, including doubling the previous top user of most unique words, William Shakespeare. To simplify that as "a clinical way of viewing his music" is disrespectful to the insane feat he achieved in doing that.

    • @billbill6094
      @billbill6094 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@ProudFilthyCasual That's still insanely clinical, as it reduces some of the greaters writers in human history as "just people who used a lot of words" irregardless of the artistry of their poetry or prose. That itself is disrespectful, and also misses the point made obvious by the fact it would exclude writers like Hemingway who don't even scratch the "unique words" list. Good writing is not "more words" and reducing a great writer, rapper or otherwise, to having the most words is dork stuff. Hitting a checkmark of an arbitrary standard is not Aesop's largest achievement in music nor should that overtake his legacy.

    I don't think anyone in the comments have mentioned it if you guys didnt' catch it, but Aesop is on the label Atmosphere cofounded, Rhymesayers. Another amazing artist to check out from their crew is Brother Ali - I'd recommend Uncle Sam Goddamn if you don't mind a political song.

    The only Aesop that’s older than Rock was the dude with fables. Y’all are really on some underground culture shit and I love it.

    Yo, Aes is the absolute GOAT, this dude is crazy and can hit some more approachable, goofy shit or some absolute mind melters. Best to always start with something digestable, this was a good one, as it's his take on hip-hop and mc's.
    I see a lot of recomendations so i won't try to duolicate wzcept to echo Rings as a must.
    Some other ones to ease into Aes.
    Fish Tales
    Kirby
    Long Legged Larry
    Minful Solutionism
    Holy Waterfall
    Gauze
    Whales (Hail Mary Melon)
    Aes is very unique in that you can't just dip a toe, he begs for a deeo dive but some people don't vibe to be fair.
    His entire catalog is like a journey through his life, with each project orienting around a particular thesis. If you dug this it's time to be ahipted.

    I've been a huge fan of Aes for over 25 years so i've watched him develop from the underground up to being the marquee signing on the Rhymesayers label. For anyone just discovering him i always suggest working through his discography backwards as his later stuff is way more accessible than his earlier word-heavy, condensed stuff. Lupe Fiasco did a really good dissection of Aes' style and comparing it to a Jackson Pollock painting that looks like mess (or sounds like noise) until you begin looking at individual parts.
    Anyway, check out some of his storytelling songs like TV on 10, Acid King, Blood Sandwich, Aggressive Steven or Get Out The Car for a real spotlight on what i feel is his greatest skill. Cheers! 🍻

    Asap rocky was literally still wearing nappies (or diapers) when aesop rock started rapping 😂 he is actually genuinely so good. He also has the most unique words out of his first 35000 lyrics out of a load of different rappers, more than Em, Wu Tang, JMT, MF Doom, Mos Def, Tribe Called Quest, Geto Boys, Kendrick, Kanye, Kano.. hes nuts, None Shall Pass, Rings, Gopher Guts, Daylight, Zero Dark Thirty are some other banging song's of his

    I must insist you ignore all these other people that didn't suggest that you start at "Rings" with Ase tho.
    Going in too deep too fast on his dense material turns most people around because they are absolutely not ready and cant hear it yet.

    The GOAT. Hands down. In lyricism, cadence, and beats. His Hail Mary Mallon and The Uncluded work is solid too. Or Lice with Homeboy Sandman. Its all fire. Tracks to check out: Lice - Ask Anyone, Hail Mary Mallon - Dollywood, Aesop Rock - Tomorrow Morning, The Uncluded - Bats, El-P - Run the Numbers. Anything Aes is fire.

    Aes Rock is not for the casual listener. You have to actually think about what he’s saying and that hurts him in the mainstream. In this track he mentions “an occupation popular with demons and ducks”. He’s saying he’s a demon, not a duck which is a prey animal that spends its time in the main stream. For a person who is interested in deeper meanings in an artist’s lyricism Aes is the goat. The more you dig and the more you familiarize yourself with his body of work the more you pull from his tracks. Even if you were already heavily familiar with a track you’ll find more depth as you decipher other songs. Also, he produced this record (as well as tons of other stuff) in full. Hence “Don’t need no help” etc.

      Technically the demons are labels and the ducks are artists. ;) Hence being shopped as a saga, etc. etc.
