The stunned silence followed by "WHAT?!"....
All the yes. It's almost unfortunate that so many people don't understand this much vocab from the English language, because when someone is able to so smoothly compose complicated phrasing like this... the poet in me sheds emotional rain down my soul.
This guy's writing spins a world of fantastical imagery punctuated with periods of point-blank shotgun blasts tearing holes through the emotional fabric, leaving you to bleed out every shattered defense you didn't know you'd built up. Sophisticated art... you could chew on this stuff for ages and still feel like there's more depth to be found.

@@richalix Damn man I have this thought regularly. Thankfully his discog is robust enough that you can sorta do that by isolating each album at a time before moving on to the next one. By the time you get to the end you'll surely have lost at least most of the beginning. I have a spotify playlist with 278 songs that are either Him, a collab, or a feature.

Lemme try to give you a brief rundown of who Aesop Rock is, since I've been listening to this man non-stop since 2014, and is pretty much the only musician I listen to anymore (this will all be from memory, mind you):
Aesop Rock is a white guy from Long Island, New York, born in 1976, named Ian Mathias Bavitz (hence his self-reference in Jazz Hands). I believe his first album was released in 1997, he's by and large been solo in the hip hop scene throughout his career with some notable exceptions (The Weathermen, Hail Mary Mallon, Malibu Ken, Def Jux, The Orphanage). Arguably one of the biggest names in the underground hip hop scene outside of MF Doom, with whom he collaborated on a few tracks (Barcade most recently, released posthumously after MF DOOM's passing). Aes is signed to Rhymesayers, out of Minnesota, but he lives in Portland, Oregon. Long ways from home.
Blockhead is a producer out of New York who made friends with Aesop while they were in college in the 1990s, and whom Aes credits as being a huge influence on his own productions. To this day, they are good friends, and Garbology is their recent collab.
Remember when Lupe said in his video that Aes is VERY prolific? He is. Dude dropped like 2 or 3 albums in the past 2 years. He's practically a machine.
Aside from Lupe Fiasco's well known video that proselytizes Aesop Rock, Aes was also given a shout out by none other than LL Cool J on Insta within the past year or so. Which, fan of his or not, is a pretty big endorsement. Strangely enough, LL Cool J gave Lupe a shout out in the same breath as Aes.
His lyricism is unbelievably dense; a combination of slang, euphemisms / metaphors, aphorisms and proverbs, observational humor, quotes from other hip hop songs (or music in general, like in 9 to 5ers Anthem). And all of that is run through his rather unique cypher.
Top 10 Songs for me by Aesop Rock:
    1. Daylight
    2. Battery
    3. Purple Moss (song by Malibu Ken)
    4. Take My Hand (song by Dark Time Sunshine)
    5. The Greatest Pac-Man Victory In History
    6. Drums on the Wheel
    7. Shrunk
    8. Citronella
    9. The Yes & The Y'all
    10. The Explanation (song by The Gigantics)
Of particular note, The Greatest Pac-Man Victory In History, the second verse of the song? The entire verse, THE ENTIRE VERSE, is done using alliteration and the letters L, S, and D. I realized it after listening to it for a second time, and checked the lyrics online to confirm.
The man is a genius. Literally the greatest hip hop artist I've ever come across.
If you want more song recommendations by Aesop Rock, I more or less have the man's entire discography.
Daylight was the first song of his I ever listened to (Aes HATES that song, btw) but the song that solidified me considering him a god was Rings. Great song.
Honorable mention is also the track Black List, with Aes and MF DOOM. Great song to just lay back and chill to. I can almost imagine being on a stoop in New York, listening to it....

Oh, and spoiler alert: No, that's not Aes in the music video. I think it's some friend of his. A lot of the people he hangs with in real life are like, skinny skater dudes, and I think that's one of them. Most of his Instagram are videos he records of his friends skateboarding around Portland. One of his few passions in life.

People saying he didn't understand it, confused amazement is the ONLY correct reaction to hearing Aes for the first time. First song I ever heard was Kirby and realizing it was about a cat was the most mind blowing event in my short history.

Best advise when listening to Aesop Rock.
    1. His music is an active listening experience. You as the listener have to make the effort to listen and analyse
    2. Listen to his track in small segments or line for line.
    3. You won't always get what he says but if you pick up enough in his verses you will get a better understanding of the tracks
    4. He mainly raps on metaphors
    5. Do t try to figure out tracks on the first try. That will never happen.
    6. Good Luck
Watch this video. It is a good example of how to listen to him

@Rix Gott1. One of the ones you really gotta concentrate to understand? That’s a fuxing understatement! That shit gave me a flossing headache trying to keep up!
But when I took the ice pack off my head, I was like, “More Soup please!”
He’s f’ing afflicting! Wow. Wow. Wow.

And his flow is so on point, listen to any of his acapella albums and the flow still has a hint of musicality without actual music his flow is so on point.

Look here, bruh! I’ve been fuxing with you for a minute now, but literally WTF!
Now I used to teach English Composition on the collegiate level, and have been known to burn some tongue and quill in my time, but my damn! This vibe ain’t nothing but an amalgamation and codification of some silver tongue soulful ass heavy verbiage AND THEN THE BEAT DROPS!
Don’t quite know what to say - I guess that’s the point!

Probably the most perplexed I've seen you on the reactions I have watched so far. Never quiet seen a layout laid out this way like in this one here. Glad you ran thru it again I always catch more each listen of an artist I'm not familiar with. Sometimes something new takes a deeper listening to get it & to appreciate the art of. Dude can tell you listen deep as I like to call it but active listening is a skill rare these days but I've noticed you kinda like me with that 360° always on. Absorbing & taking things in. Props to ya I so respect that quality man js 😊✌🏼🧡

Aesop Rock is my all time favorite rapper. He has yet to do a bad album and Jesus you got to study that shit, like just to understand. But it's dope and he's one of the few artists I buy merchandise from. Including the Long Legged Larry plush he put out.

Get Out the Car, Blood Sandwich, Dog at the Door, and Kirby are all incredible. Kirby isn’t anything wild, but it’s hilarious that it’s just a song about wondering what his cat is doing and thinking. 😂😂 and how that song follows Shrunk on the album where his therapist advises that he get a cat to help him.
