SRF152: 1988 CENTRAL TO MENANGLE

  • March 1988
    Two separate days.
    1) A very wet and miserable Sydney Terminal. A look at some of the trains of the time.
    2) A far better day. Trains and buses around Central station before parts of a ride down to Menangle (trains at Menangle will be in a future video).
    Red Rattlers and silver sets.
    V sets & a clever target plate.
    422 and 73 Class
    Leyland Leopards and various Mercedes Bus types.
    Coaches
    A much-changed streetscape around Central.
    As always, a low-quality VHS recording from the 1980s, so please do not expect Star Wars epic type quality.

      You obviously never travelled on public transport in "the old days", then!! :D
      I commuted in Sydney, and then between the Blue Mts and Central, from 1964 to 1984. It wasn't until air-conditioned V-sets replaced the U-boats that the experience became "better".

      Ride on the T4 Illawarra line today. Nothing but T-sets, even on the interurban runs. It's a long line where rolling stock goes to die!

      Tell me about it! I remember clipping a lamp pole over Brookvale way when I struggled to get the steering round quick enough.

    • @jamesfrench7299
      @jamesfrench7299 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They were horrid. Their steering systems were designed with power steering in mind but the penny pinching DGT opted out so we had a bus harder to steer than a Leopard with manual steering from the get go. The unions made an issue of it and some were converted to PS.

    Can’t be
    Believe they stil had HZ kingswoods as taxis in the city at 10:20 . I thought there was a limitation to the age & kms travelled by the car before it had to be retired?

    • @NeathSpadge
      @NeathSpadge  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suspect there would be strict limitations today. Probably less so back then..
      Until I started putting that video together, I never realised I saw them as cabs :-)

      Suburban Motor Car C 3804 has heritage significance as the world's first commissioned double-decker power car, and was designed and constructed within NSW at Tulloch's Ltd., Rhodes. The car has significance as one of four prototype double-deck power cars, and proved that it was possible to build an operationally successful double deck motor car, now a standard design concept that is used on railway systems throughout the world. The car has significance as a modification of the successful Tulloch/Railways designed double deck trailer car that was adapted in order to provide a uniform looking train when an eight-car set was marshalled. The car has technical significance as one of four prototypes that successfully demonstrated it was possible to maximise the seating in a double deck motor car by using up to date electrical technology. This car has significance as it was the first to use miniaturised electrical components and as such paved the way for such equipment to be used extensively elsewhere. Suburban Motor Car C 3804 has rarity significance as it is the only vehicle of the four prototypes that were constructed to survive as a motor car. Combined with the fact that this was the world's first commissioned double-deck power car, the car is a highly significant and very rare item

      Leaning out is the only true way to enjoy any railway journey.
      No doing that on a Waratah. Well, not without a hammer I guess :-)
