  • Melbourne is littered with abandoned and disused railways, some more obvious than others. One of the shortest was the branch line to Fitzroy Station and Goods Yard. While it no longer operates, it left a legacy that many thousands of people enjoy today.

    Hey Phillip,
For the rail enthusiast, when I commenced my rail career in 1976 as a trainee and eventually a driver, this railway line was still operating as a daily goods train with briquettes & timber as I recall for some factories around that very industrialised area as was common in those days around Melb and also including the Upfield line with all those factories adjoining the rail line & served by the Victorian Railways, and onto Fitzroy & branch off @ Royal Park Station onto the single rail line, it was usually a 'B Class ' Loco and sometimes a bank engine on the rear end to propel the train up the steep track from McCauley station to Royal Park then the bank Loco will uncouple and return light to Melb Yard. What an absolute menace it was to stop the train at every unprotected level crossing walk onto the road (no flashing lights or boom barriers) using a 'Red flag' to stop motor vehicles, many motorists blatantly ignored the red flag and kept going until the Loco was just nudged onto the road, they soon stopped.
That's my memory of the old Victorian Railways and this old rail line to the rail yard at Fitzroy, the old VR as I remember, thanks for the memory, well done
    Cheers
    Jerry

And they wondered why the rail line wasn't getting good enough patronage to justify continuuing. Bikes and pedestrians now get the same treatment on the same reservations. Vicroads: "Can't inconvenience the motorist and make them wait for 15 seconds for a bunch of cyclists to cross! They probably don't even pay taxes!"

Thanks Philip. I moved to Princes Hill in North Carlton, in 1965. I was 7 years old. My lovely parents rented a terrace house in Garton Street, over-looking Princes Park footy ground. Princes Hill Primary School backed onto the Prince Of Wales Light Horse barracks. Not too far from North Carlton Station. Not only my bothers and I, but all the kids we knew, were so mischievous when exploring this train line. From the Red Rattlers and the shiny new Blue ones going towards Coburg. Goods trains on the other line, would go some way to North Fitzroy. Dodging trains on the track. I found a time table from 1916 for the Melbourne to Clifton Hill & North Fitzroy / Clifton Hill to Melbourne (Prince's Bridge) and reverse trip, when demolishing the interior of a house in Fitzroy North in the 1980's. I currently work next to that old line and my memory's of it are for the taking. Love.

As a person that has lived in Melbourne my whole life I had heard of the Inner circle before however never realised it only closed in the early 1980's. I had never heard of the Fitzroy branch line before. I had previously thought the Inner circle closed in the 1950's like the Kew branch line did. Thanks for the well researched video.

We moved into the area around 18 years ago. At that point in time the housing now occupying the station area had not been built, and the overbridge for the station was still in place. I believe there were still a few tracks remaining under the bridge (although that is testing my memory) so the public housing was built after 2004. A small amount of infrastructure remained. When the Bears won the premiership, all of the streets in the surrounding area were full of cars illegally parked as fans returned to the mother ground of the Fitzroy Football Club

G'day. Maybe you could enlighten me on something.
In 1983 us kids rode over to this line from Burnley on sunday afternoon.
We were having a look at the North Carlton station, it was all boarded up with no entry to the building.
What surprised us was the goods train that came through the tunnel from Royal Park as we thought no trains ran along this line anymore back then.
It was from memory a VR Y class loco with 2 or 3 red VR enclosed wagons and a red guards van.
It continued on through North Fitzroy and into the Fitzroy timberyard.

Well done, although most of the comments were about the inner circle as such. It wasn't reopened for the Olympics: it hadn't been closed. It was used for trains arriving from the west and north via Flinders St, disgorging at Jolimont, then continuing anticlockwise to Spencer St to lay over. In the afternoon, the reverse: clockwise empty, pick up, head for home.
Fitzroy was a popular destination for railway-enthusiast tours over many years. Entry was slow, with flagmen at the level crossings. The inner circle was electrified; Fitzroy never was. Surprisingly, the trainloads of briquettes were often hauled by mainline diesels. The 1892 cessation of passenger service was linked to many other closures, and were a result of a major depression. The most economically shaky of the 1880s boom extravagances succumbed. The reason for approaching Fitzroy from the north: further south was built up; the inner circle was effectively a greenfields belt line. An older line cut through from near what now is Royal Exhibition: Yan Yean tramline, for construction of the water scheme. Its route can be traced through this area too. Various earlier schemes for a Melbourne underground involved Fitzroy. IIRC one was a link from St Kilda under Swanston St to Fitzroy. It could well have had a renewed life.

Great video as always. Some incredible aerial shots that I've never seen before. The North Carlton Station (which is now a Neighbourhood House, formerly an early learning centre) is almost worthy of a follow-up video. For many years it was actually a private home, I think that Vic Rail owned it at the time and I seem to recall seeing an article in a Sunday newspaper in the 1970 's along the lines of "This family live in a train station!" It's a really lovely place these days and the station building itself is absolutely gorgeous.

Hi Phillip, I wished I'd taken some photos of North Fitzroy station around 1986 as it was still intact then with both single sided platforms in good condition. My and my friends who had ridden from Burnley around 1982/3 had the pleasure of seeing one of the last trains running on this line. From memory it was a VR Y class diesel locao with a couple of coal cars and wagons and a guards van travelling east from royal park through to Fitzroy timber yard.
North Carlton station was bordered up back then.
There were no buildings on either of North Fitzroy's platforms in 1986 when I last drove past it.

I had the pleasure of seeing it many times while my father and I crossed over Nicholson street I believe it is whilst heading to Brunswick some saturday mornings in the mid 1980s.
Back then it was in quite good condition with two single sided concrete platforms.
I remember us kids riding along the Inner Circle line one sunday and there was a short diesel hauled goods train headed by I think a Y class VR loco with some read VR wagons and a guards van. I have no idea what purpose the train served but it was heading east and went into the Fitzroy timber yard.

I am so glad that they succeeded in gaining the linear park. I was born in South Mebourne. They called our area "slums". The houses were small. But we were well served with parkland. Later policy reduced or eliminated significant parkland. Entire suburbs lack a single decent park. This park isn't the most necessary park but it was possible to have and keep it. Further out there is nothing available so it is all too late. If the country wants to force DENSER living it also needs to return to the days of substantial public space. Yet governments and developers want to have their cake and eat it too. Being to the detriment of all citizens.

In the 60s I was living in Parkville and occasionally saw a goods train pass uner Royal Parade going to the Edinborough Gardens Depot. In much later times I used to lead a walk from Moonee Ponds to the Inner Circle Railway to Fairfield then the Outer Circle Railway to Hughesdale with a walking club. Just stumbled across your coverage of the Fitzroy branch while viewing other TH-cam clips and I have to say it brought back some great memories of the early 1960's for me. I had the privilege of riding the goods train on one occasion and learned basic shunting procedures and air brake practice as an impressionable young teenager several years before starting my railway career. I did a walk from Sydney Road to Fitzroy back on a beautiful November day when spring was at its best and noted the platform and track relics at North Fitzroy (including the old weighbridge track), the track at Alfred Street and the location of the sidings at Fitzroy (unfortunately access through the housing estate wasn't available for obvious security reasons). Your historic photos certainly hit the spot and reminded me of the layout of the place as I knew it. One interesting thing you may not be aware of is that the briquette contractor there also had mallee roots brought in by rail as many locals preferred wood fires to briquettes. Thanks for posting.

For may decades there was a steam locomotive in Edenburough Gardens left as a play area beside the old tracks.
It was retrieved some years ago, apparentyly to be restored by some historical group.

You can still see the old train line from Royal Park station. Just like the old train line in Broadmeadows that specifically was built to carry supplies and military personnel to Major Barracks in Camp Rd, now part of a bike and walk track from Broadmeadows station all the way towards westmeadows.. formally known as old Broadmeadows.
That line sat behind broadmeadows outdoor pools which that sits has been demolished and flattened and is currently still in development of being a new state of the art park and reserve. A new playground is sitting in its place but yet to be finished currently.
    Amazing facts

Great video of the old inner circle rail line. Back in the 1970's i did see a few B class Loco's with G wagons make their way along the line as i drove to or from my work place in Maribyrnong. Thanks for the video.

I remember this line well as during the 1960's my dad worked in a small iron foundry at McKean street not far from the briquette yard where the line terminated and very close to the mentioned footbridge that's now at Mooroduc station. I can also remember what looked like silos adjacent to the line

I travelled to Fitzroy on a special pulled by an X class, I remember the second person (fireman) held the red flag in St. Georges road for the passing of the train. Apparently the frequency of traffic did not justify wooden gates or ding-dongs and so required a flagman.

Interesting that North Carlton and North Fitzroy stations are referred to on the timetable as Langridge St and Nicholson St stations respectively. They'd probably actually see a decent level of use these days if they'd been kept as a light rail!

Great video Philip. I went to school nearby in the 1990's and remember a bit of the old rail infrastructure and surrounds.
At the railway end of the oval was a large brick building with corrugated roof. We called it 'the factory' because we could always hear machinery operating inside. It was a great source of mystery to us kids. One day we noticed a side door was open and peaked in, only to be told off by some old bloke in coveralls having a smoke. They later knocked this down and turned it into a grassed area, and later a basketball court and another building - possibly a toilet block?
There also used to be an old steam engine up near where the skatepark is/was. I think it had a picket fence around it. Seems a shame many of those old locos are no longer about in public parks like they used to be.

    • @philipmallis
      @philipmallis  ปีที่แล้ว

No worries and thanks for sharing! I believe that there are other buildings nearby associated with the cricket ground and bowling club, may have been part of those.
And there was an old locomotive in Edinburgh Gardens for a while - K 174. It was taken by the Mornington Railway Preservation Society in 1997 to be used for parts. Details here: www.australiansteam.com/k174.htm

In the PTV network development plan the inner circle railway line is to be rebuilt as a passenger line with the South Morang line to be connected directly through to Royal Park Station or near that alignment. The Clifton Hill line will only serve as the line to Hurstbridge.

Funny thing this there was no 'Rise' or 'Mound' at the North Fitzroy station site in the 1980s when I saw it many times. It was all flat back then. I wonder why they created a mound?
And why did they demolish that two station platforms? Surely they would have been of historical value?

It's now one of the main feeders to the Napier St cycle-commute route, most of which is bike friendly and car unfriendly. The Brunswick St Oval was (and technically sort of still is) home of the Fitzroy Football Club.
