It still plays during dates and hangouts in generell though, so one could ask themselfes why Toby didnt put it in Bonetrousle instead (so it would be in Sans and Papyrus battle themes respectively)

I don't think that most are coincidences, Toby made Gaster's theme simple for a reason, just so he can put anywhere Gaster might be watching us in Undertale or even Deltarune, he's probably there, planning something.
Everyone keeps mentioning that his theme is a simple 4 note progression or something, but you also gotta remember that Toby is real careful about his music, and like... I assume he chose such a simple yet distinct yet subtle theme for that reason. I mean, I could be wrong, but the dude seems pretty particular.
i agree with you. I have a big guess as to why he continues to use this leitmofotif in his OST, and it will probably explain what kind of world it is in Deltarune, but there is still a lot of darkness behind it.

Theory: the reason that gasters theme may appear in snowdin themes Is because he lived there. I'm assuming with the skeletons of course. That could also explain why the local snowdin town folk known the skeletons to "just showed up and asserted themselves here." Everyones memory is disjointed because of the fact that his existence was ripped away, leaving a Gap Where things would be more easily explained and much less mysterious.
Yea. If you obtain the key to the back of Sans and Papyrus’ house, you can interact with two things. 1. Photo of Sans and other people you haven’t encountered with. 2. Blueprints with weird symbols on it (which is I’m guessing the blueprints to the CORE). But not even the skeleton brothers say anything about Gaster themselves. So maybe Gaster was a father figure to them both.

I think that the reason that Gaster's theme is associated with Flowey is because Alphys (probably) used Gaster's tech to basically bring Asriel back from the dead.

I always loved how mysterious Gaster was as a character, he's so important to the lore, yet we know so little about him. Even the sprite that everyone associates with Gaster might not be him at all. But I do love how his theme is in many different tracks, amplifying the theory that he's always listening.
6 is tied to Gaster in many ways. For example, all of Gaster’s stats (he had a fight that was scrapped) are sixes. Gaster has a proper body upside down or right side up. 6 is a proper number upside dwn or right side up.

Its interesting that his theme is very subtly everywhere, so when you actually hear Gaster's Theme it sounds oddly familiar, but because its so subtle you may not remember where, it could make a player uneasy
This is an idea that I’ve been hesitant to touch- especially with all the backlash from looking through Deltarune’s songs for Gaster’s theme, but someone had to take the plunge. I highly doubt it was intentional in Spider Dance and the Snowdin Songs, as well as Your Best Nightmare and For the Fans, but I appreciate that this video is mostly speculative. My general rule of thumb is that the four note melody should be looped to be considered, and should probably contain a key change. Though there are notable exceptions to this such as Another Him. Still, looking for it just in random melodies isn’t gonna get us anywhere.
I agree. It’s a lot more obvious in Deltarune, while it’s fairly subtle in Undertale. Plus, Toby had plenty time to observe the fandom’s obsession with Gaster’s theme and incorporate it into his work more clearly. Most significantly, Gaster appears to have a more prominent role as a whole in DR than UT, so it only makes sense.
I think that it's more coincidental if it appears in the main melody but if it appears on the bassline or 'other hand' to what the melody is playing, it is more likely a reference. We know Gaster has probably split himself up into pieces in other timelines, so having his theme as the backdrop to songs rather than in the foreground itself shows he is always there and is silently waiting to be discovered rather than suddenly appearing and being the main character. Thematically what the player character goes through in both UNDERTALE and DELTARUNE where they are 'fallen down' is a direct thematic reference to Gaster himself. I think he has more significance to the meaning of the games than physical representation. We know many elements of DELTARUNE ended up in UNDERTALE because Toby said himself he's been working on parts of DELTARUNE as early as 2012, hence the 'April 2012' song in DELTARUNE. If you go to Toby's tumblr website page and go back to archived stuff from April 2012, there's actual artwork of Lancer and the three other card suits with their characters in a nice little animation. This shows Toby was working on stuff for this game from an early point and it's actual based on dreams he had. He incorporated some songs into UNDERTALE. My point? Toby has his secrets but a lot of them are on clear show. UNDERTALE and DELTARUNE are definitely connected, if not physically, thematically.
What did you do to Snoke I still think Spider Dance was by coincidence, and the “fallen down” thing is definitely a stretch- one’s falling in the underground and connected with dying, the other is about being erased from existence. I do think elements of Gaster are going to appear in Deltarune through some connection though.

Reviewing the evidence I don't see why the 'smile' thing was left in the main game. What significance does it have unless its a clue it was Gaster? I don't get it. With the fallen down thing you do have to remember falling down is a big thematic thing in BOTH Undertale and Deltarune and Gaster himself also fell down. People seem to miss that thematic element the two games and Gaster share in common.
Notice how in all the other songs, the leitmotif has tempo alike the original Gaster's theme, but in the core it sounds delayed and saddish. Knowing that gaster died there, it's probably them remembering what happened

I think the best part about gaster's theme being such a simple tune is that there’s always some sort of plausible deniability to whether it actually means anything. Ultimately we’re left guessing as to which of these motifs are actually connections and which are just coincidences due to the simple structure. It really adds to the mystery.

This is a wonderfully made video. However Gaster’s theme is literally just 2 Major Seventh Chords. These are incredibly common, and are bound to show up in music. The majority of these cases are probably just unintended similarities. I do agree with some of these though, especially with any associated with Deltarune. It’s obvious he has an incredible presence in that game.

the notes for gaster’s theme are A, Bb, and F. the only songs with gaster’s leitmotif are muffet’s song and snd_mysterygo. the rest just *happen* to be unrelated groups of four notes. gaster’s theme goes 1-2-3-2, whereas some of the other songs go 1-2-4-3, with 1 being the low note and 4 bring the high note. it’s nothing like gaster’s theme. also, your best nightmare went 1-2-3-4, which is most definitely NOT gaster’s theme.
@@sacred3725 That's like saying "Finale" doesn't contain "Your Best Friend" just because the first note is a half step lower. Edit: We already have good reason to believe the theme in "Song That Might Play" is meant to be Gaster's Theme, because a. We already know that Sans has a definite connection to him, and b. The theme can only be heard in the left ear, which is the side with Sans' glowing eye. Every other part of the motif is correct - the time each note is held in relation to the other notes, the pattern, the repeated nature, and the key slowly changing (though admittedly significantly faster than in the original theme). We can excuse this slight inconsistency as a variant of the motif.
2:47 This actually made me wide eyed and mouth open. Over the course of my 4 years in the fandom, I never convinced myself the Mystery Man sprite was Gaster, there simply wasn't enough, or _any_ proof of it being him. That definitely pushed me over the edge.
As for Muffet mentioning a “man with a lovely smile” and changes shape, she’s much more likely referring to Mettaton, since EX has a handsome look and he’s a shape changer, and he’s hired many other monsters to take you out.
With the part about Muffet, I always thought Muffet was talking about flowey, who not only tried to kill the player multiple times, but also constantly smiled and could imitate many different faces, to the point where they're not even his face anymore. The theory in the video also makes sense though, because Gaster is practically just a blob, which I would imagine that to allow him to change shape, and it appears that he physically can't stop smiling.
ik this is an old comment, but im pretty sure it was Mettaton who offered Muffet money to kill you, here's why: - he states he was the one who paid all the mercenaries inside the CORE to kill you, and Muffet's fight takes place fairly close to the CORE - i really doubt that gaster, a guy who's been shattered across time and space, has enough money to convince someone to murder a child (same applies to Flowey tbh. he's like. _a literal flower)_ - there's no evidence pointing out that either Gaster or Flowey are able to change forms (except for Omega Flowey and Asriel, but there is literally no way Flowey could somehow achieve those forms without any SOULs on him), whereas you could make a very reasonable point about Mettaton using his EX form to pay the mercenaries so he's not recognised by them - Muffet mentions the mysterious person who offered her money had a very charming smile. i dont think i need to go into further detail about this one

Mettaton can't smile in his box form, and it's unlikely he'd change to his EX form since it wasn't finished yet. 3. Flowey is known to smile in most of his sprites. 4. Muffet said she saw him change shape. Once again, it's unlikely Mettaton would turn to his EX form, but you know who changes shape a lot? Flowey. He does it often to taunt you, and it wouldn't be a stretch to say he'd use that to manipulate Muffet into trusting him. 5. Mettaton said he hired monsters, but it would make more sense that he hired monsters in the Core, since that's where his show was about to take place. 6. Mettaton wants to use Frisk's soul to cross the barrier himself, but Muffet seems to want to keep it for herself. Why would Mettaton hire Muffet if he wanted the soul? But Flowey, on the other hand- er, vine..? doesn't care about getting to the surface. 7. remember, Mettaton is not trying to kill you yet since it's all an act with Alphys 8. Alphys in the true lab said that she was afraid to add legs to Mettaton because IF she did then he wouldn't care about her anymore and would go on to be his own life, if he had legs, he would do so, and he even said "i've been aching to show this off for a long time" *which means he didn't show it off yet to anyone and you get the 1st premiere of his body like mentioned* sorry for the essay but it's clearly Flowey who did it XD oh yeah, one more reason, *whenever you find Flowey it's in a dark place or backround, he doesn't like to appear to talk or anything besides dark places* yes, i know you can find him chasing you, but he'd rather be in dark places, 1: RUINS' dark corner (first encounter) 2: RUINs' other dark room 3: Flowey's World (a dark world that leads to the surface) 4: Muffet says she saw him Shapeshift IN the shadows, so he would do it secretly so no one talks about it, Mettaton, however with his ego, would WANT to be seen by many

Musician here - a lot of these are very likely overreaching. Gaster’s theme is made up of three-note chords, arpeggiated (played one note at a time) up-then-down over four beats. The problem is that all of the most basic chords in music are three-note chords, and the most common rhythm structure is 4/4, the double binary. So arpeggiating a three note chord over 4 beats is really really common. To me, the striking part of Gaster’s theme is the intervals. You have a very small step, then a big leap. So if I were to look for Gaster musical references, I’d look for that weird interval structure, either in chords or in melodies. The True Lab music has some weird chords, so that could be a nice point to start.
@@daniellecollins8257 Well, in that vain, if you really want to reach far you can draw a connection between the Gaster arpeggiation and the openning theme in that both of their main motives have a small interval and a large one (if you swap the placement of the 2nd and 3rd notes in the intro theme). They are quite strikingly similar, actually. But I agree that calling any 3 note arpeggiation a reference to the Gaster theme is a reach. It probably has more to do with Toby Fox's compositional habits. But it also exemplifies how beautifully easy it is to make it seem like there patterns and connections when the music is so well composed.
I almost wonder if the four-note arpeggio is a "crutch" of Toby Fox when he writes music. Like, if he uses it when he can't think of anything more interesting and Gaster's Theme is a reference to that. I know there are shortcuts that I like to take in my games that I've worked into lore.

I feel like Toby had planned each and every one of these. He had planned Gaster’s theme to be a simple 4 notes arpeggio so it would be easier to include it in as many songs as possible. Since Gaster is “scattered across time and space”, it would make sense that he would be literally or almost everywhere, especially in the game’s soundtrack since Undertale is fairly music based (each (important) monster with their own theme and everything). So Toby wanted to make a subtle reference to the fact that Gaster is everywhere by incorporating a bit of him everywhere.

Some of them are stretches, others make sense. Overall I like the idea that Gaster's theme can be heard "everywhere". It fits the character. We really need to know more about that guy though... Also, theorists almost never talk about Muffet, but I think this "spider" could be more important than it appears to be. It has links to a lot of stuff in Undertale, and as a spider, it is related to _webs._ As if it tied things together, like a network.

It is really inspiring to me as a composer to think of doing something similar to that. It can tie a collection of music together in a very subtle way just by putting a similar melodical flow in any instance in the songs. I feel like it's easy to hear Gaster's theme in a lot of songs since it's melody is so basic, and so it made be being added in at all and we're just suffering from the power of suggestion.
3:13 actually muffet was talking about mettaton, as she said he hired her to kill you. and mettaton explains in his battle that he did hire those people to kill you. wonderful smile was probably because he was in his EX form, and changing shape was him probably turning back into his regular form.
It's either completely coincidental for Gaster's theme to be composed of an essential building block of most music or a brilliant piece of environmental storytelling that elegantly points to Gaster being everywhere at once after his existence was wiped. Makes me think Gaster's accident is the reason Undertale events happen, maybe the reason the universe exists at all, at least in a way we experience it. Like a "ground zero" event that not only changed the future, but the past and the present to facilitate and ensure itself. Man, spacetime is weird.
I think we’re supposed to make the connection that Gaster is related to Undertale as a whole, not just a part of it. That’s why there are so many songs at different parts of the game with his theme. To remember us that he’s always there, watching... But there are definitely songs that are more related to him than others.

Everyone keeps mentioning that his theme is a simple 4 note progression or something, but you also gotta remember that Toby is real careful about his music, and like... I assume he chose such a simple yet distinct yet subtle theme for that reason. I mean, I could be wrong, but the dude seems pretty particular.

Theory: the reason that gasters theme may appear in snowdin themes Is because he lived there. I'm assuming with the skeletons of course. That could also explain why the local snowdin town folk known the skeletons to "just showed up and asserted themselves here." Everyones memory is disjointed because of the fact that his existence was ripped away, leaving a Gap Where things would be more easily explained and much less mysterious.

Yea. If you obtain the key to the back of Sans and Papyrus’ house, you can interact with two things.
1. Photo of Sans and other people you haven’t encountered with.
2. Blueprints with weird symbols on it (which is I’m guessing the blueprints to the CORE).
But not even the skeleton brothers say anything about Gaster themselves. So maybe Gaster was a father figure to them both.

I always loved how mysterious Gaster was as a character, he's so important to the lore, yet we know so little about him. Even the sprite that everyone associates with Gaster might not be him at all. But I do love how his theme is in many different tracks, amplifying the theory that he's always listening.

Its interesting that his theme is very subtly everywhere, so when you actually hear Gaster's Theme it sounds oddly familiar, but because its so subtle you may not remember where, it could make a player uneasy
This is an idea that I’ve been hesitant to touch- especially with all the backlash from looking through Deltarune’s songs for Gaster’s theme, but someone had to take the plunge.
I highly doubt it was intentional in Spider Dance and the Snowdin Songs, as well as Your Best Nightmare and For the Fans, but I appreciate that this video is mostly speculative.
My general rule of thumb is that the four note melody should be looped to be considered, and should probably contain a key change. Though there are notable exceptions to this such as Another Him. Still, looking for it just in random melodies isn’t gonna get us anywhere.
I agree. It’s a lot more obvious in Deltarune, while it’s fairly subtle in Undertale. Plus, Toby had plenty time to observe the fandom’s obsession with Gaster’s theme and incorporate it into his work more clearly.
Most significantly, Gaster appears to have a more prominent role as a whole in DR than UT, so it only makes sense.
I think that it's more coincidental if it appears in the main melody but if it appears on the bassline or 'other hand' to what the melody is playing, it is more likely a reference. We know Gaster has probably split himself up into pieces in other timelines, so having his theme as the backdrop to songs rather than in the foreground itself shows he is always there and is silently waiting to be discovered rather than suddenly appearing and being the main character. Thematically what the player character goes through in both UNDERTALE and DELTARUNE where they are 'fallen down' is a direct thematic reference to Gaster himself. I think he has more significance to the meaning of the games than physical representation. We know many elements of DELTARUNE ended up in UNDERTALE because Toby said himself he's been working on parts of DELTARUNE as early as 2012, hence the 'April 2012' song in DELTARUNE. If you go to Toby's tumblr website page and go back to archived stuff from April 2012, there's actual artwork of Lancer and the three other card suits with their characters in a nice little animation. This shows Toby was working on stuff for this game from an early point and it's actual based on dreams he had. He incorporated some songs into UNDERTALE. My point? Toby has his secrets but a lot of them are on clear show. UNDERTALE and DELTARUNE are definitely connected, if not physically, thematically.

What did you do to Snoke I still think Spider Dance was by coincidence, and the “fallen down” thing is definitely a stretch- one’s falling in the underground and connected with dying, the other is about being erased from existence. I do think elements of Gaster are going to appear in Deltarune through some connection though.

Reviewing the evidence I don't see why the 'smile' thing was left in the main game. What significance does it have unless its a clue it was Gaster? I don't get it. With the fallen down thing you do have to remember falling down is a big thematic thing in BOTH Undertale and Deltarune and Gaster himself also fell down. People seem to miss that thematic element the two games and Gaster share in common.
Notice how in all the other songs, the leitmotif has tempo alike the original Gaster's theme, but in the core it sounds delayed and saddish. Knowing that gaster died there, it's probably them remembering what happened
for the last time gaster having fallen into the core is just speculation and isn’t confirmed in any way

I think the best part about gaster's theme being such a simple tune is that there’s always some sort of plausible deniability to whether it actually means anything. Ultimately we’re left guessing as to which of these motifs are actually connections and which are just coincidences due to the simple structure. It really adds to the mystery.

This is a wonderfully made video. However Gaster’s theme is literally just 2 Major Seventh Chords. These are incredibly common, and are bound to show up in music. The majority of these cases are probably just unintended similarities.
I do agree with some of these though, especially with any associated with Deltarune. It’s obvious he has an incredible presence in that game.

Edit: We already have good reason to believe the theme in "Song That Might Play" is meant to be Gaster's Theme, because
a. We already know that Sans has a definite connection to him, and
b. The theme can only be heard in the left ear, which is the side with Sans' glowing eye.
Every other part of the motif is correct - the time each note is held in relation to the other notes, the pattern, the repeated nature, and the key slowly changing (though admittedly significantly faster than in the original theme). We can excuse this slight inconsistency as a variant of the motif.

With the part about Muffet, I always thought Muffet was talking about flowey, who not only tried to kill the player multiple times, but also constantly smiled and could imitate many different faces, to the point where they're not even his face anymore. The theory in the video also makes sense though, because Gaster is practically just a blob, which I would imagine that to allow him to change shape, and it appears that he physically can't stop smiling.

- i really doubt that gaster, a guy who's been shattered across time and space, has enough money to convince someone to murder a child (same applies to Flowey tbh. he's like. _a literal flower)_
- there's no evidence pointing out that either Gaster or Flowey are able to change forms (except for Omega Flowey and Asriel, but there is literally no way Flowey could somehow achieve those forms without any SOULs on him), whereas you could make a very reasonable point about Mettaton using his EX form to pay the mercenaries so he's not recognised by them
- Muffet mentions the mysterious person who offered her money had a very charming smile. i dont think i need to go into further detail about this one

2. Muffet said "He had such a wonderful smile." Mettaton can't smile in his box form, and it's unlikely he'd change to his EX form since it wasn't finished yet.

4. Muffet said she saw him change shape. Once again, it's unlikely Mettaton would turn to his EX form, but you know who changes shape a lot? Flowey. He does it often to taunt you, and it wouldn't be a stretch to say he'd use that to manipulate Muffet into trusting him.
5. Mettaton said he hired monsters, but it would make more sense that he hired monsters in the Core, since that's where his show was about to take place.
6. Mettaton wants to use Frisk's soul to cross the barrier himself, but Muffet seems to want to keep it for herself. Why would Mettaton hire Muffet if he wanted the soul? But Flowey, on the other hand- er, vine..? doesn't care about getting to the surface.
7. remember, Mettaton is not trying to kill you yet since it's all an act with Alphys

Alphys in the true lab said that she was afraid to add legs to Mettaton because IF she did then he wouldn't care about her anymore and would go on to be his own life, if he had legs, he would do so, and he even said "i've been aching to show this off for a long time" *which means he didn't show it off yet to anyone and you get the 1st premiere of his body like mentioned* sorry for the essay but it's clearly Flowey who did it XD
oh yeah, one more reason,

Musician here - a lot of these are very likely overreaching.
Gaster’s theme is made up of three-note chords, arpeggiated (played one note at a time) up-then-down over four beats.
The problem is that all of the most basic chords in music are three-note chords, and the most common rhythm structure is 4/4, the double binary. So arpeggiating a three note chord over 4 beats is really really common.
To me, the striking part of Gaster’s theme is the intervals. You have a very small step, then a big leap. So if I were to look for Gaster musical references, I’d look for that weird interval structure, either in chords or in melodies. The True Lab music has some weird chords, so that could be a nice point to start.
In fact, most of the extra songs and Snowdin songs can be traced to one source - the intro song. That’s the figure the backing voice plays.
It is possible that toby made tasters theme so simple so that it echoes through all the music

@@daniellecollins8257 Well, in that vain, if you really want to reach far you can draw a connection between the Gaster arpeggiation and the openning theme in that both of their main motives have a small interval and a large one (if you swap the placement of the 2nd and 3rd notes in the intro theme). They are quite strikingly similar, actually.
But I agree that calling any 3 note arpeggiation a reference to the Gaster theme is a reach. It probably has more to do with Toby Fox's compositional habits. But it also exemplifies how beautifully easy it is to make it seem like there patterns and connections when the music is so well composed.

I feel like Toby had planned each and every one of these. He had planned Gaster’s theme to be a simple 4 notes arpeggio so it would be easier to include it in as many songs as possible. Since Gaster is “scattered across time and space”, it would make sense that he would be literally or almost everywhere, especially in the game’s soundtrack since Undertale is fairly music based (each (important) monster with their own theme and everything). So Toby wanted to make a subtle reference to the fact that Gaster is everywhere by incorporating a bit of him everywhere.

Some of them are stretches, others make sense. Overall I like the idea that Gaster's theme can be heard "everywhere". It fits the character. We really need to know more about that guy though...
Also, theorists almost never talk about Muffet, but I think this "spider" could be more important than it appears to be. It has links to a lot of stuff in Undertale, and as a spider, it is related to _webs._ As if it tied things together, like a network.

On a more thoughtful note, it is actually interesting to think that something as simple as a three or four note melody could be manipulated in various ways to connect the music together. It is really inspiring to me as a composer to think of doing something similar to that. It can tie a collection of music together in a very subtle way just by putting a similar melodical flow in any instance in the songs.

It's either completely coincidental for Gaster's theme to be composed of an essential building block of most music or a brilliant piece of environmental storytelling that elegantly points to Gaster being everywhere at once after his existence was wiped.
Makes me think Gaster's accident is the reason Undertale events happen, maybe the reason the universe exists at all, at least in a way we experience it. Like a "ground zero" event that not only changed the future, but the past and the present to facilitate and ensure itself.
