To be fair, it happened due to a maintenance/renovation issue as far as I heard when I was working there. The controversy I would say is the Westbank "quality" of the project. For example, when he went on the balcony, what was with that discolouration/peeling paint on that soffit panel?
As someone in the UK who likes Vancouver I liked the tour of this building. The one thing I thought was ridiculous though was the outdoor pool. I would want access to the pool on any day of the year...especially if I had spent $15 million on the penthouse...talking like I have that kind of money to spend lol
You should see it's twin, Telus Sky, in Calgary. Same architect but it reverse tapers (wide at the bottom to thin at top), and the whole exterior is covered in a public art piece/light installation by Douglas Copeland.
If I recall correctly, the original name of this development was something like Gesamtkunstwerk. It was too difficult for foreign buyers (mainly China) to handle, so they simplified it to a very uncreative “Vancouver House”. A lot of the marketing efforts were catered to overseas buyers.
Live in this building and you did a great job going through the lifestyle! Being able to walk into Fresh St Market or London Drugs without having to go outside while it’s raining is a great plus👌🏽
Omg i can't believe that building is finally finished! It's so cool to see the inside, I've seen the outside of it from the Granville bridge so many times
Thanks for explaining the reason of the shape of the building. I always wondered if it was just a designer's wish and an attempt to make it eye-catching and attract more tenants, because it seemed as the building owner loses such a bunch of money by not utilizing the building height
there are two buildings in Mississauga, Ontario - adjacent to Toronto - which were modelled on Marilyn Monroe's figure. If you have ever seen Marilyn singing Happy Birthday to President Kennedy in her clingy white dress, they would be unmistakable. Tacky, but kinda unique. Apparently, they are so successful another is coming.
developers dont do anything which loses them potential money. Zoning plans are based on square footage of a lot. So say 2.5 mean if you built to the very edge of the lot you could build 2 stories and half the 3rd. Of course there are other constraints like not being able to build right to the very edge of the lot, total height restrictions etc. And then the developer negotiates. So they can for example build a park or included a space for other desirable community assets which the city wants like a day car, space for car share programs, pot of money toward other city amenities and in trade planning grants them ok to go over certain restrictions for example build higher. I believe innovations in building has also made it cheaper to build higher so its becoming more common to build skinny tall buildings to get those views and nicer unit layouts vs. a large building where by definition more units per floor and each with much less outside walls (light and balcony).
condo's with too many amenities that don't get used, simply add to the condo costs which might be slightly astronomical.....glad i bought my condo's directly across the bridge on Beach Crescent many years ago.....

It's a beautiful building. I have a direct view of it from my place in Kits/Granville Island along with the rest of the city. I've been to a couple of open houses in there and I find the spaces are quite pathetic, and oddly set up (especially in the units w/smaller square footage). Dig your channel btw!!!
There’s another building in van like this it’s the one on cardero and gorgia (I think) It’s still under construction but it’s huge and has weird curves on the side
They say it’s safe, but I would never live there. It seems to border on the line of physical impossibility. I would not be surprised if it fell over-not one bit surprised. I don’t know what the tolerances are, but I wouldn’t want to be in the building during a hurricane or a large seismic event-especially the Cascadia shift that is sure to come.
i had the chance to buy a sph unit here a while ago. but its not worth it. it looks beautiful, but it is so basic in terms of how literally every other apartment thats at least 8 years old looks. glossy everything, L shaped kitchen. there is literally nothing special about this complex aside from its exterior.

I'm asking a few people to see if something stands out or if it is really mixed answers. Thanks in advance
You must be a real estate agent, which explains why you completely left out the 2 most important points of this building: 1) because of all the square angles and lack of curves inside the units, this represents bad feng shui to the Chinese buyers whom this building was intended for. The developers made a huge mistake in this, and many Chinese buyers Did not want to purchase units in this building for this reason. 2) this building has been plagued with water leaks and flooding on the lower levels, they had to do multiple repairs, and there’s some severe structural issues that cause the water leaks. Other than that, fill your boots!
thought the chinese prefer rooms with straight rather than curved lines…They r used to nano apts (2 beds of 750 sq ft,,) fr where they came from; sadly Vancouver realty is falling into this!!
Horrible developer I have to say. Everyone I know who lives or lived in their buildings have flood issues. This one especially had a huge flood basically covered the whole elevator and soaked the floor. I think the flood was from 30 something floor down. Developer (Westbank) spent too much on marketing and outsourcing works too much. They have no decency to care about the build quality.
I did high-rise concrete in Vancouver for twenty years, and before that worked downtown for twenty and have NEVER HEARD of "Westbank". Do you know who is behind it?? Any KNOWN names??

It's controversial because it flooded like crazy due to poor, bottom-barrel cheap building design. (Search for 'vancouver house flood twitter', there are tons of videos and photos).
The layout is very disappointing . Powder room right next to the dining table ? 🤢 and that balcony is so linear that entertaining would be awkward . Nice view of course but that’s it …
Has the time come where Vancouver real estate prices have a big correction? $2K per sq. foot is ridiculous for anywhere in Canada. London, yes. But Vancouver? Nah.
The newest luxury towers in Vancouver are sold out at $3,500 a square foot. It's ridiculous but so far it doesn't seem to be in much danger of an enormous correction.
It looks like your friends just moved into the marketing staged suite It's a building that tries to attract attention by being 'novel'. One sentence can describe this building: 'The top part of the tower hangs way out over the bottom part on one side and looks unstable'
Why would anyone want to live here? I don’t get it. What kind of standard of living can you get from living 52 floors into a building? Who can be bothered with lack of access, with trash, with moving furniature. Then there’s the risk of being trapped or building malfunction. I just don’t get it.
Hahah well the one bed average price is honestly weirdly close to the average 2 bed place. I've seen some expensive 1 Bed places out there these days 👀
Absolutely the worst floorplans imaginable. Some units have kitchens at the end of a long corridor deep in the building in a windowless cave. One has the washer dryer in a freestanding pillar in the middle of the living room. There are units where you have to go through some rooms to get to others (like they forgot about the invention of hallways). Some have living rooms smaller than the master bathroom Most are microscopic and incredibly expensive... the building has flooded twice and caught fire... and yet people still buy condos in it.
Hello! The building has actually had only one flood. It was caused by a gasket failure (which could happen in any building). It has nothing to do with the mechanics or plumbing of the building. Not sure where you got the idea about a second flood and fire lol. I do know someone in the grocery store got angry and lit something on fire, which caused the sprinkler system to go off.
