Pre-Nothing Meshuggah is a totally different style. Their old style was aggressive, thrashy and dynamic, but now they are heavy, powerful, complex and crushing. I personally love both in different moods.
I've been a fan since I was 12 years old in 1995. They haven't disappointed me once yet. Though Koloss was not their best but the songs Fredrik wrote on that are gold.

It got dark but I can't help but feel there's hope for his future & light at the end of the tunnel metaphorically speaking. He nearly relapsed back into the void of addictive harm after being released from hospital but then he made a stand against it & threw his fully loaded intravenous needle away before using it. It was actually a really good anti drugs video when it was released because of the poignant & accurate reality of drug use. My metal friends used to watch this clip on a regular basis & agree. Back in the early 90's when there was no drug education in schools & drug information online many kids just fumbled around with their addictions because it was perceived to be cool. This clip shows you that you've got to renounce drugs to break the addiction before it literally kills us.
Once and for all....it's Frederik singing lead vocals, as some on here have tried to point out already. Fred sang lead on some songs on that first album. Yes, I know he and Jens sound similar. The original Meshuggah drummer was Niclas Lundgren, who left after the "Psykisk Testbild" EP was released in 1989. Haake joined the band and bought Lundgren's white Sonor kit, which you can see in this video.

Thank you... that's all I was trying to say... and I'll admit the whole "change the name of the band" thing is a bit extreme, but some bands change their sound so much that they do eventually sound like a different band all together. I loved the band up until "Nothing"... it had some great moments but when they switched to that style I stopped being able to enjoy it as much and had to fall back on their earlier work... they are a very talented band, I just miss their thrash music.

Lol damn good point there. Even though I don't agree that their earlier "trashy" phase is their best. I mean I really like the rawness and aggression and fast tempo. But more so I like that they HAD this phase, carry it within them, and built on it to evolve into something powerfully unique. They are more and deserve more than just being known as "proggy slayer wannabes", which would be certain. But just my opinion, like the original comment, which certainly didn't deserve being so attacked...
Yeah, even if I dont recognize him at all. Jens could never have pulled of a solo like that anyway. I saw Meshuggah 7 years ago in Uppsala, and its was Fredriks 30s year birthday. So they gave him a jackson V guitar, the same one Jens is playing here actually, and made him perform Future Breed...drenched in whipped cream :)
@polkadotpuss Indeed. I love Meshuggah's old material like this. Their newer stuff is okay but I felt their Thrash material had serious bite and power to it.
I respect your opinion and can see how some fans would actually like the new direction, as "odd" time signatures have always sort of been one of their staples. However, in regards to why I would suggest a "name change"... imagine if Pepsi changed the flavor of their soda over time... and eventually it tasted exactly like RC Cola... yes it's still cola, but it doesn't taste the way it did years ago, so why not give it a different name. I'm personally a fan of "Pepsi"... if you catch my drift, ; )

Tomas Haake of Meshuggah always uses words in his songs that I have never heard in my life. He is an incredible song writer/poet.
Yeah man, that's how intelligent Swedish people are, they can even out-english us
I love how everything in this video just kicks the early nineties right in your face.

You've had your trips into my brain
I know you begrudge
Now let me leave for my amenity
So you see, you white coated freak
I don't need your allegations
Instead join me to sanity's end
With my sweet needle of salvation
Increasing needs of my only friend

Hides me away under his soothing crust

Drowning in floods of misunderstanding
Why do you all look aside?
You're ripping my dignity away
Inside identity is leaking out
Realization is catching up on me
My needs bashes false immortality
Into my affected being, chaos
Cravings of delight
Slowly eats my soul
Trapped within myself
Defraying my own lies
Bewalling my demise
Deep penury, internally
I feel marred by errors, can't you see?
My desires are calling for me
The sovereign of abnegations
Swings his feelers for a new relation
Come, mesmerize my oppressive mind
Tear apart these vehement cravings
Give me something to live for, bring me back
From my purgatory of obsessions
Increasing needs of my only friend
The one I trust
He runs in my veins
Hides me away under his soothing crust
Wow. What an unexpectedly dark video. The ending especially, as the camera pans out to reveal the nothingness surrounding our protagonist

3:20 is so groovily weird. I love it!
2:36 damn that part is good
So groovy

awesome song, one of the best from Meshuggah
how the fuck is he playing and singing that shit at the same time!
Being extremely rhythmically gifted is pretty much a prerequisite for anyone to plan in Meshuggah
+Meshuggapeth Yes.
I have the same question. Look at 3:07
It is Fredrik who sings by the way
Coz he’s Thordendal
Jens with hair. Dude was/is a beast on guitar as well. Being able to play and sing this is phenomenal.
Locust Dawn Thordendal on vocals.

It was Tomas on the vocals here
