Dude, I’ve studied drums for years, absorbed every Meshuggah record, and have seen them live a handful of times. I still have only “ideas” of wtf Tomas is doing.
Did you ever see the interview where he talked about having nerve damage in his leg around the time they were slated to tour Koloss? He couldn't keep time on the bass and almost scrapped it
Chunkiest guitar sound of all time. The rhythm guitar guy can do it all by himself, but when both guitars become synced, the sound is over the top. True professionals. Unbelievably clean for a live track. They redefined what it means to rock.
@@moai6760 it wasn't edited it was recorded off the mix board. Essentially hearing exactly what it would have sounded like without the acoustics of the room or the crowd and other standing waves in the vicinity
@@andreideaconu7232 i believe ever since the early 2010s (2012 ish?) they've been using click track in ear monitors live so they could very precise and in time with the programmed lights. You might notice that Tomas no longer counts down with a cymbal before a song, that is because the click track counts down for them. That or Meshuggah actually has psychic powers to communicate with each other before each song and count down telepathically, or they could alsobe robots. or just be total badasses that they don't need a countdown to start a song simultaneously
The kid at 3:52 would literally be my reaction if I saw Meshuggah live, you don’t know whether to head bang or just stare and soak it in cause these guys are so mesmerizing, it’s like watching gods perform on stage!
First time ever even *heard* 'em bois was first row Brutal Assault 2013... Only recollection of events: brain couldn't understand what body was dancing to, but then one of 'em deeper selves stopped the worrying and encouraged the banging. Been scarred for life since. Whenever a headache kicks in, it gets best kicked out to this track's Ophidian Trek's version. Best sounding album discovered thus far... Life's not been the same since. It's been better: I've found the "Play" button. Meshuggah srly gud bois. ✊🏽
What I find absolutely amazing it that these guys sound friggin incredible live. Clean, tight, on the money and Jen's vocals are better then on the records. For music this heavy, it's pretty unbelievable. Yo!
***** This is because, not only are they very good musicians, but also is their music quiet simple, not over-arranged with many details. They have a simple receipe : no chords, no melody/harmony, groove/weird synched rythmics, and a fucking soul in it. As a consequence, in live, there is no technical limit ^^. This band is certainly the most innovative music act since 20 years.
+Jérémy Belin I don't agree with you Jerem (je suis français aussi mais je parlerai en anglais pour que tout le monde comprenne). The technique resides in groove. To play these stuffs, you've got to have an extremely good sense of tempo. It's difficult playing syncoped rythm and especially off-beats insofar as it's very strict (rigorous). Take a look at The mouth licking what you've bled or Dancers to a discordant system. These guys are all alive metronomes. It might be simple compared to death metal bands, but let me tell you it's very hard to keep the time correct for the whole song when you play it.
+Zbim Bam of course it's still difficult to play, but far away from technical death metal like Obscura or Spawn Of Possession for example. Thinking that brutal death metal is just about speed is often a big mistake (depends on the band of course). Polyrithmics are also in speed oriented death metal bands, which is more difficult to play. But Meshuggah, with its slow paced extreme metal, has huuuge amount of grooves, not the case for extreme death metal ^^.
Or Dying Fetus, Cannibal Corpse, Misery Index, Pig Destroyer :P But I meant compared to speed, it's sure Meshuggah seems little beside. However it's much groovier ;)
For real! Especially Jens's half-voice-half-growl being replaced with full-fledged growling here. And the breakdown at 4:08... Bruuuuh this is ear crack.
The sound technician for this concert should be given an Oscar. Or a Pulitzer. A Nobel works too. The mix sounds mmmmassive here. Everything is perfectly compressed, every instrument is understandable, the punch is enough to make out each note but also enough to distort them brutally... Meshuggah bases its style on low sounds, but the way the guitar solo sounds so clear... And then 3:18 hits with all its fucking might. And it's all destruction from then on. It's a fucking piece of rhythmic art, is what it is
I make sure I listen to this song at least once or twice a week. I may start listening to it more. Love it. Don't understand why people don't listen to metal like this more. It's so relaxing.
He’s a great dude,as is his brother. Met them a couple times in Philly. Haakes brother came up w Thordendals guitar effect as well, which is a cool fact.
I was not very into meshuggah before. I knew it was incredible music but was not exactly my tastes. Too complex, too much informations sort of say. And then I heard the rim shot at 4:20 followed by this sick as shit riff ! Been a huge meshuggah fan ever since.
That last part of the song....soooooo many metal bands from the past 15 years owns these guys some fucking respect. I love for instance, after the burial but their riff on "bread crumbs and white stones" sounds so similar.
When I'm 80 years old and sitting in my rocking chair, I will be listening to Chaosphere. And my family will say to me, 'After all this time?' And I will say, 'Always."
The outro is so intense that's like if you'r back from hell , all this heavy power with only medium/low tempo..... that's unreal .. really big respect for this guy \m/ And awesome recording !!
There are really few people who have realised how great this song is. Also, talking about the album itself, it has a perfect composition and sounds amazing, but beyond that it has a peculiarity: This album still remains incomprehensible to the audience. To clarify my thoughts a bit, if this album came out in the year 2045, it would be ahead of its time. And to think that it was released in 1998 is beyond explanation. This album is at least 50 years ahead of its time.
Tomas Haake is a MONSTER undoubtedly and is definitely the reason behind why #MESHUGGAH sounds so monstrous and the snare that he uses - SONOR bell bronze (discontinued now) ...OMG that sounds so killer and cuts amazingly well to the mix ...

@Toaster135 I thought the whole idea of a polyrhythm was that the 2 beats in different time measures both end at the same time, thus creating an odd time signature.
