HOW TO: BIGGEST wheel/tire combo on stock NOVA

  • We explain how to fit the absolute biggest wheel/tire combo on your stock 3rd generation chevy Nova, Apollo, Ventura, or Omega. Learn how to fit a 275/60/15 on a 15x8 steel wheel by ordering a custom offset (5.25") so you can sneak those big meats in there with no modifications to original vehicle equipment. We are going to be running this custom setup with a Hoosier drag radial on our 1969 sleeper project "Narcolepsy Nova" so we can retain our dog dish hubcaps and get the most bite at the race track! Our competitors are not gonna know what hit em!

    I put a 40 series Mickey Thompson. That’s a 10.5” wide tire! I ran Foose rims and I also changed the lower shock mounts to one’s off a 72 camaro so it changed the shock angle! My backspacing was in centimeters or millimeters or something stupid but it wound up being around a 5.75” offset! The main thing I had to change was the shock mounts!Blue Ridge

    I put the centreline auto drag 15x8.5 PCD5-120 65..+3 offset...with 255 60 15 tyres fitted perfectly nice..also I did try 275 60 15 it bit tight on outer guard lips
    all u need trim 1.5 inches off diff housing 10 bolts 8.5 rear then there is room to fit the 275 60 15 without hurting the guard lips

    The stock 15/8 rallies fit perfect to! With a 265/50 TA radial. I ran that on my 70SS with a 14/7 rally with a 245/50/14 on the front. Looks WICKED, and no problems with any rubbing.

    I remember a few years ago everyone told me to buy the 15x8 with a 5.5" backspace so I did, and wound up having to get 1/4" wheel spacers. The 5.5" didn't actually rub until you had enough weight in the car. Nice video!

    I’m running the same 275s on my Nova with 5.5” backspacing and fit ok. I’m running air shocks, which would not work with that wide of a tire. There is a kit that relocated the shocks to the inside of the leaf springs if your shocks cause clearance issues

    Looks great! I usually run the 275/60r15’s on 15x10 inch rims for a flatter tread patch, I wonder if running a 10” rim on this car would still fit with the correct offset since the tires don’t ballon on the rim as much

    I'm hoping you also can get some body work done to that soon to be beast.The color is nice in a " not over used " kind of way. It's not black or blue, and it's probably the original paint that the car rolled off the assembly line with, so it's got that survivor factor too. Have fun with it, and don't wreck it. If that does happen, hopefully, you'll have a roll cage in it so you don't get hurt.

    • @hatchsrecreationalengineer1997
      @hatchsrecreationalengineer1997  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Justin I really appreciate your feedback and am glad you enjoy the content! As for your wheel selection for a 5.25 bs wheel your options are going to be very scarce (that’s why I chose a two piece steel wheel that I could modify the backspace to the perfect size). However a lot of guys do have luck running a 5 or 5.5” bs wheel it’s just not the most “universal” nova size. Running the 5 or 5.5 will definitely require some slight tweaking to make work with the 275 but it is doable. Another potential option is running the 5” bs wheel with a .25” spacer. I have attached a link to a company that sells billet aluminum spacer to make the 5” a 5.25” bs. I hope this helps point you in the right direction!

    • @hatchsrecreationalengineer1997
      @hatchsrecreationalengineer1997  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. I did not mention anything regarding a spacer. I did talk about the backspacing and the ideal backspacing is 5.25” (which generally has to be custom ordered). Some people get away with 5.5” or 5.0” but these typically require some modifying/trimming to fit. I have no plans for the bodywork. I like it just the way it is with all its bumps and bruises

      The only rally wheel they sell of the shelf is this one www.summitracing.com/parts/wvi-30-583405. However even though it is only 5” b.s it is made by the same company (wheel vintiques) as my wheels. They are also a two piece construction just like my wheels so I don’t see why they couldn’t custom make the b.s for you like they did for me. Call summit with that P/N I gave you and see if they can do it. I ordered the wheels through summit because it was cheaper and came with free shipping as opposed to ordering directly through wheel vintiques.

      Hey Ryan glad you like this look but honestly not sure if this is right b.s. for the Camaro or not. Almost everything on the nova and Camaro chassis wise is very very similar but the Camaro quarter panels and inner fender are very different. I don’t believe you would have as tough of a time fitting big meats on that Camaro. You may be able to fit a more off the shelf wheel on that car that wouldn’t require the custom made b.s.

    I have a 496 1969 Nova that runs 10.23 in quarter mile on drag radials with just 28" MT tires and stock suspension with slapper bars. You want 275 in rear for what? Are you drag racing this? Are you doing an LS turbo street racer? Wide tires are for traction and not looks. For a wide rim even with 5.5 spacing you have to relocate at least one shock on drivers side on 1969-72 Nova's or the bolt head will rub the rim.

      @@thomasbednarik535I have seen guys run 15x7’s on the front you just need to research what backspacing you will need and tire size. I know a guy running rally wheels on a 68’ that are 15x7 4” backspacing with a 215/65 tire.

    15x10's with a 5" back spacing 275-60-15's will barely fit too

    Don't put a fat girl in the back, she will cause you issues when going over uneven pavement or hitting pot holes. The outside of the tire will surely rub up in the outer wheelhouse. I have wheels my Uncle and I made that fit exactly like yours do. No problems until you hit a bump hard. With rear passengers its not good on the tires or the car. It makes me flinch when I hear them rub. It is not a set up for normal street or highway driving. It will teach you to slow down and dodge the rough stuff. Also, only petite girls in the back seat. Keep some air pressure in them so they stand tall until you get to the race track. Don't load up the trunk with heavy stuff. Don't fill your fuel tank completely full. These are all small things I have learned from 24 years of driving and racing with tires that barely fit but look AWESOME. Most people think its mini tubbed. It is not. I have the same back spacing on home made ( by me and my uncle at his machine shop) Rally Wheels. 15x8 with a 29/10.5/15 MT ET Drag Slick. I had to trim the lip at the top of the wheel well. Then tack weld the quarter and outer wheel house back together. I had cut away the spot welds up top. Well I hope you have finished the car by now. If you have, you will have already figured out most the pitfalls of running very tight tire clearance. But its worth every scuff and scrape to have "That Look". Build On!

    Do they rub when driving on the street and going over bumps? Even with the caltracs? I have that 70nova w/10bolt and caltracs in the rear

      No they do not rub. I have been running them on my 69’ for a few months to local car shows and cruise nights and they fit great. However I tried to put them on my 72’ and they would not fit with the rear shock absorbers that I have on that car. So I’m order for them to fit you will need to run a rear shock that has a thin housing .

      @@hatchsrecreationalengineer1997 I just have some cheap AutoZone ones that are thin enough. I also have the splitmonos on mine. I wasn't to sure if I should have gotten the adjustable ones like yours. Not to sure if it would make a big difference vs the cheap AutoZone ones. Other than the shocks and my 8.2 Yukon gear with posi diff I have the same set up as yours. Gonna try out the 5.25 back spacing with 275s. Hope it goes well. Thanks
