Watch time. If u remember around like 2018 or 17 there was a lot of click bait or just dumb pranks that weren't funny because back then they got paid for every view not how it is now where u get paid as a creator depending on how much we watch so if I watch this vid for 2 mins instead of 5 he's not getting paid for the whole vid or something like that I'm still learning but that's what I understood so far its sucks but thats why
I have a 1970 Nova SS I bought in May of 1972. It’s a survivor. I’m 72 and finally starting to work on it. Still has the original 350, 300 horse motor in it.
I've got a 69 that I'm fixing up right now, My stepdad made it a drag car. We've just put some bucket seats in it, and we've got it started up for the 1st time in years. That sound never gets old. Cars don't sound like they used to. I'm 21 and hope to have this finished by the time I'm 23. I'm glad I found someone else who loves Novas just as much as I do.
Another great video. Some additional information on #4: Like you said, all 1968-79 Nova rears interchange, but also 1967-69 Camaro/Firebird. With the exception that 1967 F-Bodies do not have staggered shocks. As for the 7.5” 10-bolt, that rear started in 1976 behind 6-cylinders as well as 305 V8’s. However, 1977-79 Novas only got the 7.5” with the 6-cylinder. Additionally, Novas with the 7.5” rear have a driveshaft that is 1” longer than Novas with the 8.5”. So when replacing a 7.5” you need to shorten the driveshaft or use the driveshaft from the Nova you got the 8.5” from. Lastly, all 1972 thru 1975 Novas have the 8.5” rear. It’s the only rear available so that’s the best place to look for one. They are every bit as strong as a 12-bolt. The strength of the 12-bolt is not from the larger ring gear (8.875” vs 8.2” or 8.5”), nor from the extra 2 bolts attaching the ring to the carrier. The strength is mainly from the larger pinion. The 8.2” 10 bolt has a 1.438” pinion while the 12-bolt and the 8.5” 10-bolt have a 1.625” pinion. Also similar is that the 12-bolt and 8.5” have the same larger bolts (.4375”) that attach the ring gear to the carrier. 8.2” rear have smaller bolts (.375”). 12-bolts do have slightly thicker wall tubing. Also the axles are 30-spline for a 12-bolt while 8.5” are only 28-spline axles. But that’s easily changed in the aftermarket.
First off, I love this channel. You are my go to for Nova information. I have a 74 SS and the guy I bought it from told me about the ss packages for the 74s. He told me that the SS package was a dealer ad on item and there wasn't anyway to prove this was an SS. So he said he was selling me a non SS car just as a disclaimer. I didn't mind because I wouldn't be able to bring myself to tear apart an original SS. Its a 2 door hatchback custom. I took the original running 350 out and stuck it under my bench, then put a 355 create engine, AFR heads, wild cam, 350 TH, 411 12 bolt posi rear, + Caltracs. She's a fun little ripper to play around in for sure. Thank you for the great content, its really helping me out with my build.
The guy you bought it from told you some bad info. In 1974, 21,419 Novas left the factory with the RPO Z26 Super Sport package. It was NOT a dealer item. Tons of myths like this are repeated all the time, but that doesn't make them true.
@M2fiftycal not disputing those facts and there were only a little over 5000 of those that were hatchbacks. The PRO Z26 SS package was the factory ss but the dealer also sold an SS package in 73/74. Since the original suspension and wheels are long gone and without the build sheet, there isn't really a way to tell. I fully believe I have a "custom" and not an "SS," but the fact that you could get a dealer SS package in 74 is infact true. Like I said, with the original parts that remain, I'm positive this is a "custom"
Great video with lots of valuable information. I had a '68 Nova SS with a 350 4-speed when I was in high school. It was a rocket and I never lost a race with it. I still regret selling that car and I always look for it whenever I go back home to see if it's still around. Wish I could buy it back but I'm thinking it would go for more than the $600 bucks I sold it for in the late 1970's. The moral of this story is to NOT listen to your mother's demands that you sell your muscle car!
My dads old car was a 68 chevy nova, he said it was so slow when he first got it, so he put a 350 and gutted it out to make it run the drag. He was only 20 when he had it now he’s 53, and we are working on fixing it up. Recently we put a new brake system, new wire harness, fuel cell etc. Soon we are taking it to the upholstery and body shop. We gutted out a old mobile in a junkyard and got new material used to remake everything.
I had a 71 SS 350. the door tag read that it had 270hp. I saw a 72 SS 350 that had a small Tach in the dash where my car had the fuel gage (upper right). I kick myself every day for selling it. that was the biggest mistake I ever made. to add. my Nova was a much faster car when I sold than when I bought.
I love watching your channel, great knowledge and you know your novas, keep coming out with more videos, i would love to see more of the 4dr to 2dr conversion,
Thats some great knowledge.. Thanks !! Have a real 1970 SS The dealership swapped out engine in 1971 for a wrong engine by numbers.. Built a nice 1970 coded engine years later, however still doesnt have matching numbers.
My aunt & uncle had a yellow '75 or '76 with black & white checkerboard seats and my mom had a blue '77 with matching blue interior. Wish mom still had hers, loved that car and the 8 under the hood. Aunt & uncle ditched theirs in the early 80's which is also too bad.
Picked up a '69 in August that has a new crate 350 in it; I will be adding front disk brakes, redoing the dash, and probably putting A/C in. So I look forward to your videos.
I use to have a 74 six hatchback model-loved that car! Was originally column shift, but the previous owner cut that off and it had a in floor Hurst 3 speed shifter, Crager SS's and air shocks. It was hard to shift into 2nd and I disassembled the trans and couldn't get the speed ring, so I swapped the 3rd speed ring. Later I put a Vega 4 speed with Vega shifter-Excellent swap! But not an overdrive, was geared low. No AC or power anything and wife could not drive it, so I sold it many years ago.
Thanks ! I have a 71 with a 6 cylinder I’m thinking about building up this motor a little as everyone drops a 350 or something in them but see a 6 cylinder is a little different and maybe less work and easier on the budget ? IDK. What’s might be you ideas for a 250 6 banger ? It’s needing a exhaust manifold so I’m thinking split headers and new intake with maybe 2 2-barrel carbs or maybe looking a fuel injection of some sort.
I also have a 71, came with the straight six. It was a a lot of fun and ran great but ended up doing the 350 swap, with 350 transmission. Now I’m worried about the rear end. I think it would be really cool to see you keep the straight 6 and spice it up!
Can the inner part from a 69-72 door be relocated. I have a 68 with a different year door and want to order the period correct door panels. But as you know the window crank and door lock are in different locations. Thanks for the videos great info !
I have a 70 that came from Willow Run Assembly in Feb 70, V8, 4 speed floor mount, front disc brakes. I do not have the original motor, but was told there are 2 sure fire ways to tell if it was built as an SS. First, only SS's had a fuel return line from the fuel pump back to the fuel tank. Second, on the driver side behind the rear tire, u will see where the factory welded a bracket for the dual exhaust, which was SS only. What say you?
Thanks for the great videos there a big help. I have a question when welding in the rear window frame pieces does the weld have to be completely water tight. Thanks
I have a beautiful 74 nova. Its all original. Brown in color with a cream interior. AM radio, shifter on the column ,straight 6 250 . Gas fill behind the rear license plate, original 14 inch rims. But best of all, it has 4 doors.
You are right there is more SS nova's that was ever built, I will keep my 70" a rare non ss plus I don't want to drill the awesome paint job. Stock ps, pb disk, bucket seat, auto trans, center console gage delete.
I had a '73 Nova SS 350 4bbl, TH-350 auto. Trans. I've never seen a '73 SS with anything but a 350small-block. In a '74 SS I've come across Super Sports with bench seats, column shifted TH-350 but all of them were 350cid's...
You just helped me confirm my car is a true 72 SS that is also a 22000 mile car that had to be restored because sitting under a pine tree for 12 years. If I'm switching my wheels to a 15" rims how wide can I go and tall without modifying and any rubbing?. Also it appears the the existing rims 14" have 7 width or the rear and 6" on the front. Why did they do that?
Awesome! I would love to have an original SS. Not sure why the fronts are different. I would have thought they would be same. As far as putting 15” wheels on, on front you might be able to get 235/60/15 depending on wheel back spacing. For the rear, you can get 275/60/15 if you use a 15X8 with 5” or 5.5” back spacing. Might have to run a spacer. All cars are a little different.
Ok this video was awesome!! Just the way you Presented yourself as you were talking about the stuff. It's easier to like the product with a likeable person. Anyway good video I did learn some stuff. Thanks man!!
One more thing, if you want to put one piece glass (get rid of the wing window in your '68-'72) the one piece glass out of the '73-'74 fit a ''68-'72. It's a good look as well.👍 Your welcome 😃.
Good morning, I hope you’re feeling as good as you look in the video. I have a 72 that came with a 307. I bought it from a guy who gave me a hokey story about the car that I won’t get into. I suspect it came from the factory with mono leafs. As bought it has multi leafs. It has an 8.5 rear end with 3.08 gears. The rear end could have been changed with the springs. What is the difference if any?
Hey. I’m feeling much better. Thanks!! The multi leaf perches are deeper. The multi spring should sit almost flush with bottom of perch with rear setting on spring. The shock plate barely sandwiches the spring. If you have mono leads on multi perches you’ll have to have some kind of spacer.
My blue print crate is waiting I've looked researched nothing it's like the metal rear end pads on 76 are off from the 68 rear u bolt holes...please help 😁💯
What type of black spray paint should be used for the 1973 Nova front grill? I want to paint my gray grill and add the SS badge. Was the factory paint satin or gloss black? Thanks.
I just finished my 5 yr 45k 71 Nova project. Drove it for the first time yesterday. I love it but I’m so disappointed that the tires grounds out and rubs so bad! Ugh!!!
Great video! Always sharing your knowledge love your channel! Can the front corner eyebrows from a 67-72 fit on a 73-74? If possible would you happen to have a video to see how it’s done?
Yeah. The eyebrows will fit. after you remove the 73/74 fender ext. You might have to drill a hole in fender. Not sure if it will fit without changing headlight bezel also. I have a video on converting the front end of a 74 to a 72
Your answer made me wonder about bumper height as well. If you look at the thumbnail, the bumper of the 73\74 nova has notches where the headlights are. Does that mean they sit lower than a72 novas headlights? Or does the73\74 bumper sit just a little bit higher?
You really can’t unless they’re sagging because of worn out hinges. You can put new bushings in them. Sometimes the hinge has to be welded up and re drilled.
Love your channel man I've gotten a lot of info. Could you do a video on the structural differences between the hatchback normal trunk cars? Is there any reason you can't put wheel tubs in a hatchback car, or cut the package tray and backseat out of a trunk car?
I have a question I'm trying to do 68 swap small 10rear to big 10 76 multie springs and rear question 68 multi leaf traction bars u bolts will not line up
You mentioned that the rear is ‘offset to the passenger side. Dose that mean you run the risk of rubbing on the fender well on the drivers side?.. I’ve got a 74 that rubs on the drivers side and was wondering why it does that. I thought maybe the previous owner had put in a different rear that sits off to the other side
I gots a 73 Nova..350/auto..,,no "K"... in my vin.Maybe an "H".... I think i have SS...I'm puttin 70 Bumpers onit..I'm watching all ur videos...thanks for all the information..
Hey shop 209, I’ve got a 1972 with a stock shock setup. I’ve been thinking about the year one wheels 17x8 with 4.5” backspace. What kind of tire could I get in there with that? Also, what size tire for the front, if I go with that same 17x8? What can fit in there? Thanks for answering. Thanks for all the great content!
Thanks! I will let you know asap if it will work. I’ve gotten a wheel fit tool and I intend to make a few measurements to maybe help the Nova community get an idea for their builds. Just finished up removing my M21 for a Tremec swap. 5 speed tkx variety. So far, so good, waiting on parts.
Subscribed. Love the channel and love Novas. Though, my love for Novas extends all the way up to the 1978 model year. I'd love to take a 73 or 74 hatchback and drop a 68-72 front clip on it. Can you put a 68-72 rear bumper on a 73-74?
Funny u mentioned the hinges. Apparently mine is a second half of 70 car because they’re welded on. Been trying to figure how to get some adjustment to get driver door to lift the latch end up a smidge. Was going to ask on the next live. Lol. If you’ve had some experience with bushings etc maybe you could talk a little more about that in another video. Gotta b a pretty common problem I’d think. Thanks for the video. Take care John
Tony: Lift the back of the door up and down. If it feels loose you just need pins are bushings. If it's tight, take a 1 1/2' long 4x4 and floor jack under the rear of the door. Open the door just far enough to clear everything. Go slow! Keep checking! If you get it too high just hang on the door. They are not that hard to move.
@@ronframe387 thanks ! Definitely the bushings that are worn. Hadn’t ever tackled anything like that before so thought it might be useful video for John to do. Door closes ok once it gets to the latch it lifts the door to close but really appreciate that solid easy door close sound on the older cars. Lol
I have a 73 nova that I'm gonna swap the 4speed out for an automatic. I already have the power brake pedal and transmission for it. What else will I need for the swap, & how hard will it be to do?
With the hinges, was it just the top hinge? Or both hinges? I ask because I heard the top hinge was welded, and that was so the door could be hung faster, then the bottom hinge could be installed and then it would be ready for what passed as aligned.
The basic differences were trim rings around park lights and tail lights, drip rail trim, rocker trim, bumper impact strips and a few interior upgrades. My 73 custom came with buckets and floor shifter
1973 was the first year of the Custom package. The package consisted of: 1973 Nova Custom model: Body Style Availability: - hatchback - coupe - sedan Equipment (used in addition to or in place of standard equipment): Exterior: - Bright trim on grille around parking lamps - Front and rear bumper impact strips - Bright roof drip moldings - Fender and rocker lower moldings - Front fender "Nova Custom" nameplate - Bright trim around tail lamps Interior: - Right front door jam switch for dome lamp operation - Glove box lamp - 10" wide prismatic inside rear view mirror - Cigarette lighter - Bright framing on instrument cluster carrier - Passenger compartment carpet floor covering - Rubber and foam backed vinyl trunk mat (coupe and sedan only) - Carpeted load floor covering (hatchback only) - Special floor and 4-piece hood insulation - Deluxe door sidewall with bright moldings and simulated wood inserts (hatchback and coupe only) - Deluxe door sidewall (sedan only) - "Nova" door trim emblem - Rear seat arm rests with ash tray
Do you know offhand what the out to out wheel mounting dimension is for a 76 rear diff. and is the pinion centered? I'm cutting down a Ford 8.8 from an Explorer and putting on Ford 9" ends. Thanks for the vids!
@@Shop209 I'm coming up with 61" out to out with driver's side 1/2" to 5/8" longer to center of the pinion? It's tough trying to measure it by myself. I assume it positioned under the car with the pinion centered? Maybe that would account for why you had to use a spacer on one side? Thanks for the help.
@@2old2rodeo Ok I came up with 61" from axle flange to axle flange. The pinion is not centered. I was wrong. Probably off center a little to keep u joint lubricated. If the joint doesn't spin correctly it won't lube. I came up with pinion over to passenger side about 1/2". Like you said, it is hard to measure.
My dream cars always been a 68th of 72 Nova and you know what I can't even buy one well can if I got like $40,000 or $60,000 but yeah it'll be good when a lot of people leave this earth like Hoarders
Ive got a new project nova, a 70 4 dr with a 230, and it's three on the tree, i wanna put a V8 in it, but I wanna leave the 3 on the tree though, do you know if the bell housing will hook up to the v8. If not il have to find the correct parts
As an amateur with a 70 Nova in the works, Do you source parts from other novas or online? I’ve been looking for a new dash that would match the rectangular gauges, but i’ve only seen round ones for sale.
@@Shop209 thanks for the super fast response !! Hey, and what about the interior components ? Dash is the same ? Seats ? I have a more door nova here in Costa Rica 🇨🇷 I dream some day I can purchase a two door nova a swapping as much a possible to the new body..
@@Shop209 thank you so much. The ones in my 69 right now or from a 72 4-door and they don't fit well at all I have the originals I'm going to try to fix them up when I redo the interior again
Thanks! I get a lot of my stuff from Summit Racing and other stuff from Classic Industries or Swap meets. AMD is my favorite place to get sheet metal parts!
Grenade. Ok seriously though. Getting the pins out of the hinges can be a real pain. They make a tool for it but it’s hard to find. I usually spray it with PB blaster then use a drift punch. Takes patience.
Short, fast-paced, and full of facts. Why aren't more videos like this?

I have one 71 Nova and I had a 68, and a 76. I would love to have more !!!
I’ve always wanted to have multiple versions of a nova also maybe a four-wheel-drive maybe a limo maybe a shortened wheelie car nova !!!

It really needs to be because if you leave any gap it will get moisture in and start rusting.
Thought SS Front fender vents were chrome on edges.
I have a beautiful 74 nova. Its all original. Brown in color with a cream interior. AM radio, shifter on the column ,straight 6 250 . Gas fill behind the rear license plate, original 14 inch rims. But best of all, it has 4 doors.
Hey cool channel I'll definitely be tuning in! I'm working on a 71 nova barn find
Awesome! Thanks!
Great vids. Looking for the door edge windlace for a 70. Thanks
I needed some too. Ordered from Classic Industries.
@shop209 where can I find the spring for a 72 upper shifter on the column.
You are right there is more SS nova's that was ever built, I will keep my 70" a rare non ss plus I don't want to drill the awesome paint job. Stock ps, pb disk, bucket seat, auto trans, center console gage delete.
Sounds like a nice car!
@@Shop209 Oh Yes
You have 12 of them that's cool I can't even buy one there all bought up and then we got Hoarders that's cool
I had a '73 Nova SS 350 4bbl, TH-350 auto. Trans. I've never seen a '73 SS with anything but a 350small-block. In a '74 SS I've come across Super Sports with bench seats, column shifted TH-350 but all of them were 350cid's...
Thank you for your video! Really really interesting !
In my case my nova SS 73 4 speed ! Remember that!!🤔
You just helped me confirm my car is a true 72 SS that is also a 22000 mile car that had to be restored because sitting under a pine tree for 12 years.
Thanks dude!!! I appreciate you watching!
@@Shop209 your very welcome!!
Hey when you painted the windshield cowl what was th efactory color on these cars like Satin black?
Great info, lots of help before buying a project!
Thanks.
The factory black was between matte and satin. Non SS cars had grille painted Argent silver.
I got a question, how do I adjust the doors on my Nova? It has the welded on hinges…🤷🏻♂️🤔👍🏻
You really can’t unless they’re sagging because of worn out hinges. You can put new bushings in them. Sometimes the hinge has to be welded up and re drilled.
Legendary intro
Love your channel man I've gotten a lot of info. Could you do a video on the structural differences between the hatchback normal trunk cars? Is there any reason you can't put wheel tubs in a hatchback car, or cut the package tray and backseat out of a trunk car?
I don’t have a hatchback for reference. As far as mini tubs I’m not sure. I’ll see if I can find a hatchback to look at structure.
Where can I find an original set of 1972 Chevy nova bucket seats. Was there a difference in the 1972 seats versus other years?
68-72 bucket seats were different than 73-74 and 75-79 had different seats as well
Great videos. What's your take on leaf springs, multi vs. mono? Pros / cons and your recommendation would be a good video.
I might just have to do a video on that. I like multi leafs. The monos are fine but the cars really need a stiffer siding for good driving.
If you’re drag racing, Calvert Engineering split mono-leaf springs with CalTracs are amazing.
So my 69 nova is not a Super sport aww man but it has a big block lol..love your content man keep up the good work
Thanks!
I have a 70 do you have a video on installing the headliner? Is there a Drop-in?
I don’t. I’ve never done a headliner on a 68-72. I tried the conversion on the 73 and it was terrible. Lol
I gots a 73 Nova..350/auto..,,no "K"... in my vin.Maybe an "H".... I think i have SS...I'm puttin 70 Bumpers onit..I'm watching all ur videos...thanks for all the information..
The K in VIN is only for 1972. A 73 you would need the window sticker or build sheet
@@Shop209 the title office thought it was a Sport Coupe..Being a 350 2-BBL they did put Super Sport on the title..Was they correct to do this???
Hey shop 209, I’ve got a 1972 with a stock shock setup. I’ve been thinking about the year one wheels 17x8 with 4.5” backspace. What kind of tire could I get in there with that? Also, what size tire for the front, if I go with that same 17x8? What can fit in there? Thanks for answering. Thanks for all the great content!
I’m not sure. I haven’t done much in the war of wheels larger than 15”. I will be doing a pro touring build soon though.
Great video.
Thank you for sharing all your knowledge about the NOVAS. Can i install a 275 x60 on a 15 x 6 wheel?
Maybe. Usually you need at least a 15X7 for that size tire.
@@Shop209 i thought so. thanks again
Thanks. I’ll do a video on that soon.
@@Shop209 awesome !
Lol
Great information
I have a 73 nova that I'm gonna swap the 4speed out for an automatic. I already have the power brake pedal and transmission for it. What else will I need for the swap, & how hard will it be to do?
#1 thing to know is that chevelles are sooooooo much better !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this video is real good info on novas!!!!!!
I am looking for 69-74 nova . Project, roller,or driver. Best place to look?
With the hinges, was it just the top hinge? Or both hinges? I ask because I heard the top hinge was welded, and that was so the door could be hung faster, then the bottom hinge could be installed and then it would be ready for what passed as aligned.
Both hinges. I have never seen a car with mixed from factory.
Question?? I have a 74 nova custom. Whats the difference?? From other

Those 73/74 doors are heavy, they have a big beam inside of them for reinforcement. I put some on a 72.
What size / part # for front and rear 7/16 wheel studs for weld prostar wheels? Thanks
It depends on your rotors and axles. You can use stock on front and use long shank lug nuts
Also, could you tell me if a 17x9 with a 5” back space work in the front without issues.
How to fix a Floppy Sun visor on a 1974 Nova please ????
Where can I find parts for a 68 Nova 2
Do you know offhand what the out to out wheel mounting dimension is for a 76 rear diff. and is the pinion centered? I'm cutting down a Ford 8.8 from an Explorer and putting on Ford 9" ends. Thanks for the vids!
I’ll measure one for you when I get home.
Very good video I have 72
My dream cars always been a 68th of 72 Nova and you know what I can't even buy one well can if I got like $40,000 or $60,000 but yeah it'll be good when a lot of people leave this earth like Hoarders

Honestly I’m not sure. I know the 6cyl auto trans is same but not sure if bellhousing will fit v8 correctly.
It's the same transmission, I've already put the V8 in and got it running

Can a 10 inch tire fit on a 70 nove 17 in tall

Probably a 2.73 rear gear.
As an amateur with a 70 Nova in the works, Do you source parts from other novas or online? I’ve been looking for a new dash that would match the rectangular gauges, but i’ve only seen round ones for sale.
If you want a stock style dash they are available from several sources. JW nova, classic industries, and others
