IS THE 3 WOOD DEAD? // Getting the Right Gapping with 5 Wood, 3 Wood or Mini Driver

- Today, Ian is in the bay to test out if a 3 Wood still has a place in the modern golf bag. For some it will always, but with technology changing quickly and only 14 clubs allowed. It does raise the question if the 3 Wood has more or less value than a 5 wood?

Just removed the driver out of the bag, for I love how consistent the Mini driver is, and replaced my 3 wood and now have just the mini and a 7 wood! I can carry the 7 wood 240 off the ground and 260-280 is my mini driver off a tee! Do not see why I need to change or add another club that I don't feel confident enough in!
I go driver, 5 wood, 7 wood, 5 iron. For me and my swing speed the gaping is perfect. My confidence in those clubs is very high, so I haven’t played with a 3 wood in over a decade.
Love my 4w\7w into 4 iron setup…fills gaps nicely for long approach shots, gives me defined club selection off of the tee
I'm absolutely loving my new Cleveland 3+ 17 degree Hy-wood! With the shorter stock shaft this thing is very easy to hit.
Here's another interesting setup my friend is doing.... 7W and a 4W... gives him a really perfect gap between the driver and his highest iron.
Actually my 3 wood is my favorite club in the bag. One of the most consistent for me off the tee and second shot in like par 5’s. Golf will and always will be subjective.
3 wood is very versatile. Great control club off the tee and if you have a forgiving model like Sim 2 max it’s fine from the fairway too.
I don't understand the concept of calling a 10.5* lofted mini driver a 3 wood replacement. 10.5 is driver loft, regardless of what size head it is or if you're hitting it off the deck. And delofting a 5 wood to 16.5 * means it's a 4 wood, so it's not 5 wood loft anymore. I do agree that most amateurs don't need a 3 wood. They'd be better off with a 4 or 5 wood, 7 wood combo and let's face it most of us do not play from 7K plus yards on a course.
Well the 3 wood goes out and that goes in its place.
Mini drivers come in 11.5 and 13.5, so the one they have is the lower model. The larger head makes it a good off the tee option that you can still hit off the deck.
Same concept as the higher MOI irons, no? Add mass low and behind the ball and you can de loft slightly. Suddenly a more forgiving club
I put a Callaway 16.5 high loft 3 in the bag and it works very nicely off the tee or the deck. I am 75 yrs old and I get 165 out of it.
I’ve gone the other way - binned the 5 wood 🙈 I love my ai smoke max 3 wood, carries about 235, my driver carries about 255, 7 wood 210 carry. I’d like a mini driver but don’t really want a club that’s 10-15 yards shorter then my driver, and looks too big for fairway hits (to my eyes). I still may get a mini driver and crank the lift on 3 wood by 2° 👍🏻
These are my exact same yardages with D/3w/7w. I love the idea of the mini driver but see where it fits in. I hit my 3w a lot off fairway as my course has 4 long par 5s
@@massey8 yeah I like to hit my 3 wood off the deck a lot! A normal 3 wood gives me more confidence at address then a bigger mini driver, I have hit the brnr mini and it was epic, just not convinced off the deck or where it fits in my bag when my driver is so good 🙈
If you’re only looking for a club off the tee try Golf Pride +4 grips. They allow me to grip down on all my clubs without changing the feel. If I need a shorter, flighted tee shot I grip down 1”-1.5” on the driver and tee it a little lower.
I go Driver, Franken 4 wood, 7wood, 24* hybrid. I love the top of my bag now.
I put in a 25* hybrid in place of the 7. Bit shorter but better for attacking greens on the long 3s. The 1-4-7 SETUP IS GREAT.
for those of us with average swing speeds the 3w is, for most people, dead and has been for a while. We just do not have the speed to get enough launch consistently. My 5w carries 210 yards, I can shape it and (sadly needed too often but that is another issue) I can use it for a little choppy shot to get the ball out of the trees, below the lower branches and then run out
I would bet ~50% of golfers couldn’t get more distance on average out of their 3w vs their 5w. I would love to see people hit the brnr mini off the deck instead
Still rocking the RBZ Tour 3 wood at 14.5 and it’s staying til it breaks. A rocket off the tee but versatile enough where I don’t struggle off the deck. She’s “the one” 😂
3w is a staple in my bag. Currently playing a cobra Rad speed. 15.5 it does everything. Fairway finder, easy off the deck. Fade or draw. If i replace it, it will be with another 3w
Welcome to the club Ian. Since the last BRNR came out I have gone down the route of driver (8°), mini (13.5), 5 wood (18), 4 utility iron then into my irons. Feel like it gives me all the options. Tee clubs, forgiveness and most yardages covered.
Similar route over here. 7.25* driver, 12.5* mini and 18* 2 iron. Big fan of it.
I’m still rocking a standard stealth 3 wood and 5 wood. Carry the 3 wood 265. Just put an Ai Smoke triple diamond 9° in my bag and hit a 330 yarder on the course with it. But I did just pick up a lightly used 2023 model BRNR 13.5 that I plan to replace my 3 wood with. lol
I’m mixing it up this year. Used to go driver , 3 wood and 3 hybrid. But took out 3 wood and replaced it with a Chucky 2 iron for a back up off the tee. Doesn’t go quite as far as 3 wood but consistency is significantly better. Also has a lower ball flight, and even though off the deck goes a similar distance to hybrid, playing a sw Scotland links course the lower and highly ball flight option is a nice tool to have.
I bought a 4W recently. 16.5 degree. Love it
I used to carry a Dr, 3W and 3Hy. But never really felt comfortable with 3W off the deck. I changed to a 4W and that little extra loft really helped me feel confident over the ball
Also Callaway UW: Driver ball speed, 41-inch shaft, great off the deck, flighted, workable.
Yes, I have the 17 deg in my bag and love it. 240ish off the deck and 250 off the tee.
🦄
I have the mini driver for tee-shots. I am scared to try it in the fairway at 11.5.
Sold the 3wood for a 5 wood and I have a 7wood as well that I love, both stealth 1st gen...
I am not sure about the 5 wood, the ball goes very high...
There is a used stealth 2 plus 3 wood for sale near me for only 225$ canadian dollars...
Really tempted to come back to the 3 wood in the fairway as I used to hit it good...
Nice video guys.
I’m all hybrids 5-2 atm. The king tecs with the stock mmt shaft fit me great and match my irons in feel so I’m not bouncing around different swing weights or flex stiffness from one shot to the next.
Just put in a mini driver with Ventus shaft and returned my 3 wood. Works great with my full driver and 5 wood set up. TM truck built it on the spot for me at my CC fitting.
I’ve been doing the mini driver/5 wood combo for around a month now, not sure I can ever go back to a 3 wood. Pretty similar situation to the video, 5 wood was going close to my 3 wood distance and the mini is so much more confidence inspiring off the tee
i´ve had the td 300 mini on the bag for 3 years now,,,, is low spin,, great great off the tee, and a low bullet on the fairway.., but very straight which works great on my tight windy course....i´ve always had problems hitting the driver aginst the wind,,, teeing it lower meant spinnyy short outcomes......for me works great..... is a bit shorter than my driver,,,,, and i´m getting fitted next week for the 5w, in order to get a hight¡r flight on the fairway,,, to replace my 3w,,,, i´ve been meaning to do it for a while and this is the final push... thank you!!
My Sim2 Ti rocket 3 wood creeps up on the driver a bit too much when lofted down. For that reason it doesn't get used a lot, but it's the best looking and feeling club I have owned so it'll be in for ever.
Switched to a 4 and 7 wood three years ago - have never looked back! 😎
I’ve definitely thought of it!
This is the way.
That’s my setup. I carry a 3 wood head, dialed to 17 but with a five wood length shaft.
Same brother
@@J_B72Grogo approves!
I'm a mini convert. Rarely hit 3w off deck and when I need less than driver, the BRNR is way more forgiving from the tee. From the deck, 5w is easier to get up than 3, and a bit less spinny and a little longer than the 7w.
I am loving my Callaway Apex UW (17 degree) That with a Cobra King Tec 4 Hybrid and that's really all I need. Maybe ..... lol
I will always bag a 3W when I need get the ball out there off the tee but not quite as far as driver. Anything less, I will play a 3 hybrid.
I love the follower fittings. Any chance you have a 50 something with a high handing cap looking to get out of steel shafts and go to graphite.
If not, I would like to see something dealing with the best conversion steel to graphite.
I'm an old guy. I cannot get the distance of my youth. My driver is a 3W, 225yds average. The driver just was not giving me consistency. The miss hits hurt me much less than the driver and made my overall score go up. I have a 5W, 7W, 9W, 11W, 8i-PW, GW, SW, LW, putter. This has helped a lot and with senior shafts I'm getting what I can from the clubs. The fairway woods are easy to hit from the rough. My chipping and putting help me a lot. The ego crusher? Playing the old man tees, but it keeps a foursome moving along and keeps my handicap at 12. Use what suits you best. Also, be honest with yourself. Go have fun. It is supposed to be fun.
I have 3w, 5w, 9w, 5i at the top of the bag. Driver kept getting me in trouble. My 3 wood goes nearly as far and I keep it in play 😊 9wood is a perfect 200-210 yard 4 iron replacement. Forgiving as hell and it goes high. I have a low flight so it works great
I am getting a full bag fitting from Club Champion. I'm definitely trying out the mini driver.
My go to bag is my light stand bag with 9-10 clubs. I play for recreation. I have focused more on my short game clubs, my current setup is: putter, Cleveland SS Chipper, 56, 50, pw, 8i, 6i, 5h, 5w and driver. I like the SS Chipper because of its bounce and wide sole, it is nice have when you play from wet and pudding soft lies as well as around the green. I rather have more choice in my short game than in my long game. Between the driver, 5w and 5h, I get out there close enough to use my short clubs.
I do have a nice full 14 club bag also, but the light stand bag is easier to grab and go and it have become my preferred way of playing golf. I am a walker.
Love this! Sounds awesome
Fitting in west Texas we sell a lot of 3 woods as they need to keep the ball flight down and want a lot of roll out because of the 30-40 mph gusting winds out there... sell lots of 5 woods in the dfw area, need a little more height and distance with the softer and plusher conditions.
This is exactly it. It all depends on what conditions you play in. I used to play a lot of links golf in Scotland. Good luck launching your 4/5/7 wood into that 40 miler ! But on modern inland courses carrying over deep bunkers the higher lofts are great.
would love to see a video of mini driver (13.5) with a left hand adapter playing at 15 deg vs a 15 deg 3 wood. I think that is an application many ppl may consider
I love mine. Ping G425. Could not hit the G410, but this thing is great!
For years I’ve played 15 or 16 degree hybrid and found them almost as long as 3W. But more accurate. Would love to see low loft hybrid vs 3W in Ian’s hands.
Have an old biocell + lofted to 4w and love it.
Great video boys. The question I have is about Ian's 5 wood: At 16.5* it's probably coming in a bit hot to stop on a green. So if it's a tee ball club, what's the point of the mini driver? Does he have 3 clubs for tee shots? Would going driver, mini driver, 18,* or maybe driver, 16.5*, 20* be better for attacking par 5s? I have similar speed to Ian and I'm building the top of my bag, so just curious why you've gone with those choices, not a knock!
I swithed to the Mini and 5 wood years ago when the TM SLDR mini came out
5 wood always give me doubt -- is it going to balloon or is it going to carry?
I have a Adams Tight Lies Ti 3+ wood I can hit anywhere and never worry, fairway or decent rough.
I love my 3 wood use it off the tee and fairway Titleist tsr 2 +
I have a 4 wood & I’ve cut my 5w down to hybrid length (adjusted swing weight) for a very forgiving long iron/hybrid option.
I’ve gone to Driver, 20° hybrid (fairway & punch shot use), and Srixon 20° driving iron(off the tee) for the top end. It’s just one less swing to master. I can get 250-260 off the Tee with the driving iron. Generally all the distance I need.
Lies
Ive hit a TM Ti 5w since the original SIM. I hit it every bit as far as any 3w Ive hit. If I catch it well it flies maybe 15 short of my driver.
I love my 3 wood off the tee and fairway. My issue is 5w and 3h are roughly the same distance for me. And then my irons start.
I'm just don't think I could ever replace my 3 wood. It's always been so consistent and gaps perfectly between driver and 3hy/3i. Mini drivers are cool for nostalgia from the OG though
Took 3 wood out my bag a couple of years ago, Driver and 5 Fairway. Just put a 2 iron in and dropped all hybrids for long irons. The help I get in modern irons (T100S) means the hybrid isn't the added confidence it used to be.
Been rocking with a stealth 2 plus 3 and 5 wood…They are absolute weapons! Even playing at fairly long courses I’d imagine a lot of folks can get around just fine with 3/5 wood off the tee all day (they are hot these days!). Takes off a little pressure with the big stick. The ability to modify the launch with the little slider is fantastic on new TM woods. I know this may sound silly, but don’t you all think it gets a little boring hitting driver/wedge over and over again on par fours…?
Any chance of you guys getting the Titleist TSr 2W that we saw on the tour? I'm dying for that one.
I have driver, 3 wood, 5 wood. But they're all very different. Rogue ST LS goes high and long, Ai Smoke TD 3 wood hits low rockets. Srixon ZX 5 wood is forgiving as it gets and launches high and straight with green holding spin. All about what you want different clubs to do at the top of the bag.
Been playing the TSi2 16.5 degree lately and its been so much better than my 3 wood was.
Question......If you want a fairway finder why not just take a 12 degree driver, reduce the shaft length to 43.5", add a few grams to the head to get the swing weight back up to D2-D4? You'll have to dial in the right shaft but I think standing over a 460cc head will be even more confidence inspiring than standing over a 300cc head. I'd like to hear your thoughts on that idea.
It's interesting how sometimes old ideas come back around. I recall about 20-25 years ago, before Tight Lies and Orlimar changed the game, when 3 woods were larger heads with deep faces. Hitting a 3 wood off the tee was a lot easier, and the perfect choice for tight fairways.
Got rid of 3 and 4 irons, got the Paradym 5 and 7 woods. Best decision of my golf hobby.
Took my 3 wood out of the bag 18 months ago and haven’t missed it one bit.
Slower swing speed here, but I don’t have much shaft lean at impact and have always been able to get away with gapping and height with a 15* to 18*. I only use three wedges so I can carry 3/5/7/9 woods for tighter long game gaps; it’s the gaps with driver to 16.5* to 21* that weren’t as even nor what I wanted to see
Good stuff. Its funs being able to reach long par fives in two. I am using stealth 2 three wood and stealth 2 nine wood. Trying to gap in between them despite the non adjustable hosels. Would it be 7 or 5 wood? Or both?
Driver(Qi10 LS), 3W(TSR3), and 3H(TSR3) in my bag. I struggle to hit a draw with a driver and can with 3W or 3H; off the tee (where I use them 95%) gives me options. I'm never hitting them off the deck unless I am in trouble. I understand the logic; for me.. it serves a purpose.
I went from tsr3 3 wood. To a tsr2+ 2 wood and tsr5 wood. And the plus flys so straight and is easy to control for tight fairways even for a mid handicapper like me and the 5 so much easier off the deck
I lose maybe 10-15 yards with my 5 over a 3 but so much more accurate.
Of course on a tee nothing beats the mini driver but I’ll be fun to see the difference from the ground !!! The question also is why would you need two driver if you hit them from a tee ???
I haven’t bagged a 3 wood in a very long time. I could never justify using it over driver off the tee, and the 5 wood is much better off the turf. I think 4w/7w is a combo that could work for a lot of people.
I have a 5w, a 2H, a 2i a 3W. I go back and forth, just can't decide to be honest. In most cases though, I lean towards having the 2H and the 2i in my bag I play the 2H from the field usually and that 2i off the tee if I am not using driver. I have seriously considered playing a 5w though as it just feels easier to predict.
Bought one, took out he Stealth+ 3 wood and won’t change back. 3 wood off the tee gave me a few bad hooks where mini flies straight. No problems off the deck, actually hit it better off the deck versus a very low tee.
What adaptor is on the Mini Driver? Is it the same as the fairways or is it the same as their drivers? ...Or does TM use the same adaptor across the board?
So what length did you play the mini driver at, I feel that the only way that I would get much better accuracy with a mini driver compared to driver would be with a shorter shaft, I haven't played a 3 or 4 wood longer than 42.5" in several years.
Also wonder the dispersion difference and distance one between mini driver turned down in loft vs driver
Driver built to favor a fade. 3 wood is easier to draw off the tee or turf and can be setup as such. 7w or 3h is next in bag and should be neutral to hit either way.
I would be interested to play a 2-5-7 setup in summer when the run is good.
Have a specific question regarding the correlation between vertical launch, attack angle, club loft, and dynamic loft. Is there an ideal amount/rule for the amount of de-lofting that supposed to take place on irons. In other words if you have a 32 degree 7 Iron is there an ideal amount of de-lofting that would show up on dynamic loft? I know you have done videos on the topic but I have been trying to correlate the trackman published data for PGA people. From what I can see on a Trackman it is around 8-10 degrees is that correct?
I love my 3W. Still rocking a Big Bertha 3+. I don’t like the low profile that most 3Ws are now.
What would you say for the average speed swinger . Ie 100 mph. I go driver , 4 w , 3 and 4 hy 5 iron
Yeah it’s definitely thinking about my top end
Stealth 9 degree driver, stealth 4W and stealth 6W with a stealth 2 3hybrid as a sub before the P7mc 4iron.
Why not use 3 wood head lofted up at 16 or 16.5 with 5wood shaft length (maybe draw bias) to have the increased forgiveness of a bigger profile?
I carry Mini driver 5 wood, 3 wood reduntant now have to stand on a 3w for 300 yards where as a Mini is much easier to hit 300 then 5 w for 250 carry, I’m debating a 9w addition
Is the mini driver playing at standard legth or did you cut it down any?
I wanted to hate the mini driver but 5 rounds in and it’s probably the best club in my bag. Rocket off the tee at an easy 275 and stunningly easy 250 off ground
I have only 5-wood and the gapping is fine. Carry about 200m, rollout to 210-2015. Driver carry max around 220m and rollout to 230-240 meters.
This is where the average golfer needs to be honest with themselves. Yeah sure we all want to play what the pros play. But reality is us average joes just don’t have the swing speed. Loft is our friend. I’ve swapped out the top of the bag. Gone are the turned up 9.5 driver, 15 3 wood and now playing 11.5 turned down, 18 5 wood turned down 3 wood shaft, 18 5 wood turned up 7 wood shaft.
Absolute game changer.
What I’m saying is fitting is a must, but do it opening minded to what you need. Results on the course matter the most
Not dead. Just time and place. I have four options for that spot in the bag. 13.5* or 15* fairway wood or 11.5* or 13.5* mini driver.
And i will play 18* fairway wood or 18* driving iron.
Set up depends on weather/conditions, if i need it off the tee or in the fairway, and the course lay out.
I hit the mini TM the other day and off the tee(low) I was just skying it then the same off the deck. I wasn’t swinging the best. I just could figure out what it was
Did you say that callaway had a mini driver? I haven’t seen an official announcement yet - did I miss it?
I taken both driver and 3w out. Mini Driver (set at 12) and 5w (or 3Hy depending on course) are it for me. Could not be more pleased. I see zero value in a 3w now and I am only 10 yards shorter with Mini than with my old G430Max .... but waaaaay more fairways hit thus far. Mini for the win.
My gapping is Dr>3w>utility 3i>4i-G>56>60
I haven't played a 3w in years. So much more consistent with a delofted 5w than a 3w, and most courses I play I don't need more distance than what the 5w provides as an alternate tee club. There's literally no benefit for me to have a 3w in the bag.
I have a Ping G425 5 wood 17.5 deg, adjust it to 16.5 deg, a 3 wood shaft in and put a lighter weight into the club head, D3. Best 4 wood of my life.
I went the other way…Paradym 3 wood up to 17* with a five wood shaft. Love it. Frankenstein 4 woods are the way to go. lol
@@bryanfederico8931 Loft up makes the club face looks more close to me. But 4 wood is the best!
@@APRNVJ yeah I move the ball right to left already so more closed isn’t the best for me. But it’s an added bonus to the fitting process of being able to move face angle and loft.
3W at 14.5 and 7W at 21 is a perfect combo for me. However if I was forced to have one fairway wood it’ll be a 4W or 5W.
3 wood isn't dead. It's player need/requirement/want/use dependant. I carry a TM Stealth+ rocket for tee use. Its a good 280 club from the tee but I never use it off the deck because I don't have to.
Yeah so get a 5 wood and you will hit it 265 off the tee and 250 off the deck
I’m telling you, the 5 wood is the best club in the bag
@@mikerogers1949 Actually - I don't need to. I was on the range since this video and I found gripping down a bit and loft it up to 14.5* I carry my 3 wood around 260. I also carry a TM SIM UDI 2 iron and hat club is a steady 248 carry and I can work it low fade, mid fade and high fade.
You guys always drop the ball with the TM woods. You needed to show numbers with the weight track slammed forward to kill some of that 3 wood spin. BRNR and Rocket are essentially the same club, with the only question being whether you prefer a smaller 3W head with a low aspect ratio for hitting off the ground vs primarily tee shots for the BRNR.
There is one hole on my home course where a 3w is routinely attractive. The rest either don’t need it, or demand my very best to avoid trouble. 5 wood / 3 hybrid much more relevant.
The question depends on handicap, as a junior I used a 2 wood, it was a weapon strong off the tee, and effective off the deck. Now age 67, my 3 wood, 16.5 degree AiSmoke effectively a 4 wood, is 25 yards behind my driver and super straight, i also carry a 7 wood turned down to 5.5 wood, opens the face up and again 25 yards behind my 3/4wood so gapping works for me, not sure where a 2 wood fits in my bag. 30 years ago, i am sure it would have worked. Lastly, my driver is also a AiSmoke, 9 degree, turned down to 8, i can grip down for a fairway finder, still have the ability to work it both ways, so yet again mini driver doesn’t suit my bag.
i'm still surprised cheap package sets still have 3 wood and not 5. i love my Cobra SZ 5 wood
Top of my bag:
Driver. 9° XS. Carry 250
5 wood 18° S. Carry 220
4 Ui. 23° S. Carry 210
I’ve found 3 wood isnt worth the drop off in control compared to the 5 wood, and I find the utility iron easier to play than any 3 or 4 irons I’ve ever hit, by far.
3 woods alive. I just still see it as an option for players who want to attack long par 5 fives on their second shot or play something more spinny and safe off the tee. I’d rather have a 3 wood spinning at 3200 heading into a par 5 then a flat mini coming in at 2300. Again it just all depends on what you want. I’ve personally put the mini @11.5 as my driver replacement 300-310 yards high and straight in the air with about 2500-3000 spin. I like it on my narrow courses where I don’t need that extra 15-25 yards with my driver.
I have my 3 wood at 260 carry and a 3 hybrid at 235 carry that works good for me I don’t want something to go close to my driver length because that’s more my layback club off the tee
Personally yes, the 3 wood is dead! I have the swing speed like Ian and it makes no sense needing a 280ish or near 300 club off the deck.
I got rid of my mavrik and got the Paradym 3wood HL coming in at 16.5°, sometime when the rough is higher on course I crank it up to 17.5°. The club perfectly flies 250-270. If I need more off the tee I just use the driver!
Before you question this give it a try! The 4/5 wood is so much less stressful off clean and tricky lies and almost becomes the go to rescue club at a distance.
Just confirming what I have seen.. Guess CC will be carrying these this time around!
Unfortunately I don’t think TM have much stock left, it’s a limited quantity product.
