Good technique, I never heard it called that. In Wing Chun/JKD, it's pak sao, lop sao.

The more styles I was exposed to, the more similarities and common techniques, just different names and a few different applications. I never thought of it as pak so, lop sao. I'll have to take a closer look. Thanks!

@@kputala I realized later I misspoke, I meant tahn sao (palm up block), lop sao.

Nice technique sir; I just wonder how do you deal with an opponent pulling his punches ? How can the grab be effective then ?

Hello Pierre! This technique and many techniques in traditional martial arts would only work against a fully committed strike or a totally untrained attacker. People just don't fight like that anymore, and most Traditional arts don't prepare you for the chaos of what you will face on the street.
This technique is also for in close fighting, not against someone at a distance throwing jabs.
If a person want in close and pulling their punches this probably won't work, you would have to be incredibly fast, but then you wouldn't be in much danger of being injured either. Someone pulling their punches is usually afraid to fight or not committed. When an opening presented itself I would rush them and try to end it quickly.

@@kputala oh ok. To be honest, I work really hard (not just training but learning and thinking) to be able to utilise tma in modern context(mma). I think that there are a lot of reasons why this hasn't been done properly among them the lack of innovation in training and/or the interpretation of the technique found in the forms ( there are many of them for reach technique) but some make sens in almost all context.
In this case, I think that the incorporation of timing, rythme and pressure-testing can be key to success, I'll try that out soon 😄

@@pierrewilliam7119 I agree! It can be done, but the way tma are taught, especially sport karate. The tma got away from their roots of self defense and changed to self development. You need to go back to Okinawa and the roots the modern tma came from. I think you'll find what you're looking for. I'm doing that myself for my personal defense.
      Have a Merry Christmas!🥋🎅
