I've had the guitar for about two months. I bought it myself, so I wasn't as biased as some reviewers that were given guitars. If you're interested here's my pros & Cons:
    Pros:
Guitar does sound great. it is a decent electric/acoustic, but really shines in being able to get on board effects without amplification
The guitar has nice finish & feel, however I'm used to playing a well set-up Taylor 614 so the action is just a smidge high for my taste. I may shave the bridge a bit eventually.
FX are great. Playing un-amped they add a good flavor. Forget about the distortion setting unless you're running through an amp.
Case is nice and solid and protects the guitar well. More on the case below.
Charger cradles the guitar snuggly and automatically charges the guitar. It's USB-C and doesn't come with a charger, so you may need an adapter for the cable.
Other than that, most reviews give a far better report on the capabilities of the instrument, so check them out like I did.
Cons. These are things no reviewer seems to be addressing:
My lava has a nice blue metallic finish. Looks very cool. While the guitar is made of carbon fiber, I'm not sure how well the finish will hold up. I'm pretty careful with all my guitars and most I've owned for decades and they still look almost showroom. My lava has a couple of minor scratches already that I have no idea where they came from.
ELECTRONICS. The touch screen is very sensitive and at the same time has a bit more of a lag than you would be used to on a smart phone. Most notable is the absence of any home button. You'll have to page back to get there. Additionally, due to the rounded shape, I have a tendency to lean over the body when I'm sitting and playing and my chest triggers the screen. I can tell when that happens, because the most annoying loud click accompanies any changes. If you're playing out, be prepared to settle on a set sound or template for the whole song. Shifting to another one is not as easy as hitting a button on a pedal.
I mentioned my chest activating the touch screen. Usually that would not be a problem. What is a problem is the Lava uses a nice machined strap peg THAT DOESN'T FIT ANY STRAP. If you like any kind of strap lock, forget about using it. Dimensionally the strap pegs are larger than the throat of any standard peg. I would have bought the Lava strap, but they have been out of stock. I use d'Addario straps with locking ends and it would take major modifications. So I broke down and bought a ice leather strap which I now have to ream out the hole to make it fit. I'm not sure if you could even swap out the stap pegs as they have no screw and I'm not ready to twist them off and create another problem.
CASE: It's amazing that you can drop a thousand bucks on a guitar and have to pay extra for a proprietary case, but hey, I'm made of money so I went for it. Case fits very well and is form fitting. It doesn't leave room for a strap (If I finally get one to fit) The case has nice padded shoulder pads, and looks like the type that a Japanese school girl would have. I personally don't care to strap a guitar on my back unless I'm trail hiking. The straps do not come off so love them or live with them. The case has a nice soft handle, but is nowhere near the center of balance and like a Gibson SG, suffers from severe neck dive. Seriously walk with this case for twenty steps and you'll opt for the school girl straps.
MOST DISSAPOINTING FEATURE: Support, period. Guitar came with no instructions other than to turn it on. The web site is absolutely no help. As I mentioned, being intrigued by the novelty of the guitar, I had to rely on reviewers, most of which were given the guitar. I do wonder what will happen when the rechargable battery goes south, or worse the electonic module. As far as I can see there's no parts support on the website.
CONCLUSION:With all this, I bought the guitar for the FX novelty and more importantly for the Carbon Fiber construction. I bought it so that I could have a guitar I could leave out in my studio and grab as I needed to practice or work out asome inspiration. My studio is in my basement and although it's dry, the winter requires me to fill a 5 gallon humidifier to keep optimum moisture levels. So it's a guitar that is not subject to temperature and humidity. That said,I'll keep it for what I intended. I doubt it will ever play out unless it's a barbeque or around a camp fire.

I've decided on getting a smart guitar but i don't know whether to go for this or the lag hi vibe smart guitar. They are of similar price but i think i might prefer the traditional wooden guitar over carbon fibre. I really don't like to buy a guitar without playing it either but i'd have to purchase either of these online and hope for the best.

    • @fastelder
      @fastelder ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@braveheart4603 Despite the things I don't like about the LAVA3, I do like it for the purpose I bought it. That is, I can leave it out and not have to worry about temperature & humidity, and have it at the ready whenever inspiration hits. The neck is 100% straight (Plek'd) and I don't have to worry about cracks and other environmental damage. It does have a different, but pleasant sound, but if you like the warmth of a wood body, then it may not be for you.

I think a big feature everyone misses is that this guitar can share music from guitar to guitar. The screen isn't just a gimmick, it has huge functionality out side of the effects/tuner/metronome... So you can record something on your guitar, sync it to the cloud space, and then someone else in another part of the world can hear what you just recorded out of their own guitar.

Beyond the surface entertainment, I would want to know battery life, battery replaceability, how much functionality is lost without wifi, can lost cloud functionality be substituted by a memory card as I find forced IoT annoying, warranty period and other longer term usability aspects in case the company were to go out of business. I think it does look aesthetically pleasing, seems comfortable to play and sounds nice though.

    Nice review.
I’ve had a Lava Me 2 for about 2 years. I think it’s great for the money (I bought it in Hong Kong for about USD$500). I like the size, the carbon fibre construction and the overall concept. Some people think it looks like a toy, but I’ve never been that concerned with other people’s opinions of how my instruments look. To me, it’s about making music.
The weakest part of the guitar is the internal electric module, which had to be replaced due to a dead battery. Then I had a problem with the 1/4 in output plug. The company’s customer service is typically PRC. They were very responsive once. When I had other problems, I got no response.
Regarding the Lava Me 3, I really like the new options - more effects, looper and so on. Beginners will appreciate learning chords and scales.
Is it worth $1k? Maybe. I’d like to play it for a year and see whether poor manufacturing affects it. Maybe they’ve got their act together after a few years of business.
Carbon fibre is the way to go. Lava Me’s competitors are more expensive (i.e. Emerald, Rainsong) but also more impressive.
I see my Lava Me 2 as my introduction into this CF world. I bought an Emerald a year after getting my LM2 and haven’t looked back since.

      @MarcoCirillo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Emerald guitars are absolutely stunning instruments! I have been in love with Lava and I personally never had problems with the hardware but of course I am sure that malfunctions can happen. Sorry to hear that you had problem with customer service. Regarding carbon fibre guitars, I love them even though I am still way more into regular guitars. However, When I travel, the lava is N.1 choice ☀️🎸

Hey Graham.. cheers from Vancouver Canada.. Would you mind answering a question ? I'm wondering if this guitar can be used as a sort of Band in a box type thing ? Like can I record all the parts of a certain song and then play it back adding in vocals ? Also does it have a wide ranger of assorted sounds and can I plug in other pedals ?
Thanks in advance hope you can get back to me.

I really liked your review of the guitar. So I ordered myself a lava me 3.
Here my reactions when I received the guitar.
First, the smell emits from the guitar when I unboxed it is extremely unpleasant. I have another carbon fiber guitar. However, I do not remember this smell.
Secondly, the guitar has fret buzz on the G string right of the gate.
I contacted lava me representative. They wanted me to record a video of the problem and send it to them. Did that. They suggested that there might be a problem with the "floating" nuts or the saddle. They wanted to send me a new "floating" nuts and saddle so I can fix it myself. To them it's just a minor problem. And if I decided to keep the guitar, they will also send a special pick as a gift.
Well, I don't want to make any modification to the guitar, because that will prevent me to return the guitar back to them.
Lastly, I returned the guitar back to them and they only promised to partially reimburse the shipping fee.
So do take notes if you are a potential buyer of the lava me 3.

I put a large velcro square on top of guitar, and strips on the back of my phone, and so it's adjustable. Its a good tool for everything guitar related.

The guitar seems pretty amazing. A couple things I would be concerned about it is of coarse is how it feels playing it since it’s not something I can try out in a music store first. And since it needs charged in a charging station, I would be concerned about the batteries, if they are internal, can they be changed by user when they finally die, or do you have to send it to a service center somewhere? And are they special batteries/ battery that you have to buy from the company? And lastly, I don’t do heavy strings. I’m old and have arthritis a bit, so I use .10 light gauge. But man it would be perfect for soloing at park, or my church! Very interested! Just wish I could play one first! Great review!

This looks really impressive, great features. The only reservation I have is that the guitar itself is obviously built to last, but technology soon becomes outdated. In 5 years time you'll still have a lovely guitar, albeit with a built-in low spec. phone/tablet that can no longer cope with software updates??

Does this mean acoustic guitars now are outdated? Lol

Great point man, but its still not a bad bargain considering you'll still be left with an acoustic guitar after all and a few usable features. Most things are this way now anyway...phones, tablets, even cars.

Just tried this in a store. Amazing. Of course that is my opinion. THe sound was a lot better than in the video. Of I had the cash for it then and There, I would have bought it emediately. I am used to mid range guitars, Martin P51 etc. I am still a novice after 35 years of playing. I shall buy this guitar.

Looks very nice... I love the scale trainer idea. Hmm, if I had nearly $2,000 to spend on a guitar though... I just can't quite see myself spending it on this. I record a lot, and know I can dial in all those effects to my liking with various plugins. So for a practice guitar, which is what it essentially would be for me, it's too pricey. I get why it's that expensive though. The tech is really cool and I want to see it catch on!

It is not clear from any of these videos on the Lava smart guitar whether the onboard smart device relies on a constant connection via bluetooth to a smartphone or whether pairing etc is for loading effects etc onto it. Are the effects and looper etc standalone please?

What are the frets made from; nickel/silver, EVO, Stainless? Can the action be lowered or raised? Is there no need for a truss rod? At precisely what temperature range should this guitar be kept in? Is the saddle removable so compensation can be made if necessary.

oooooh, I could kiss these people... I've been looking at the Nova GO for a while, but they don't have a left handed version, so I couldn't ever get it... I was fully expecting this to be right handed only, especially since there is so much more to it than the Nova, and their... X3, or X4, or whatever it's called... This makes me so un-needidly happy.

One other question please... Can record different tracks to form a complete song ? Like say I wanted to play oh I don't know Take it easy by the Eagles, would I be able to record every thing in that song and then play it back. Basically I'm wondering if this could be used as sort of a band in a box type idea ?
If it can do these things, then I'm seriously going to be buyer of the LavaMe3 I just love it so far.
    Cheers from Vancouver Canada.

Since you've played both the Lag Hyvibe 30 & Lava Me 3, which was better (easier) left finger action? I see the Hyvibe can get upgrades, can the Lava 3? Wonder if the Lava will add Bluetooth - phone playback, which the Hyvibe can do? I'm looking forward to trying each out as I'm in the market for a "smart guitar". Like features on both but the one that sounds and plays easy for left hand fingering (arthritis issue) will probably win me. Thanks for your video.

If it isn’t broke don’t fix it. I like the idea of the touchscreen but acoustically those guitars are awful sounding. Carbon fiber which is what the guitar is made of is basically just a stronger type of plastic because as the plastic is woven together like plywood. I don’t know about you but I am not interested in playing an all plastic guitar. If someone who builds all solid wood guitars such as Gibson, Martin or Taylor it would be interesting to see them do something similar with a touchscreen. But even then you are taking a big chunk out of the guitar to install the screen which is going to account for some tone loss. The lava might make for a cool practice guitar, but I would never use one live or in the studio. To each their own I Guess.

One question: I suppose there is a lithium battery somewhere to power all this stuff. Is it replaceable by the user? Because, you know, lithium battery life is more or less 5 years, then they start dying. I have the lava me 2 and, with my great disappointment , I have discovered that the battery is not replaceable by the user.
