    I found the tone of the blue Lava much clearer on my desktop speakers than the Lava Me 3! The latter guitar sounded more "muffled", for want of a better description. However, once the effects were added, the Lava Me seemed to sustain a lot longer with an added "bloom" to the notes. Both nice guitars and very different indeed to the norm.

      I found the same. Lower end Blue Lava sounded better and more realistic.

    I thought the Blue Lava sounded better in the mid to high range. The Me 3 had a heavy deeper tone. As I play in open Dm, it would be the Blue Lava for me. Brilliant job on comparisons.

  • @rindred
    @rindred 2 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    I think I prefer the sound of the Blue Lava, because it sounds like what I'd expect a regular wooden guitar to have. But I can see why the Lava 3 has such appeal; I think that if you sing in a higher register, the deeply-scooped out mids would free up that range so as not to drown out the vocals. The Blue would occupy the "expected" range of an acoustic, and will fit in exactly where you'd expect a traditional acoustic to sit in the mix. Playability, obviously, is a factor in choosing (as is your budget) one or the other; but I'd suggest that if you're going to use the native acoustic character, how it is going to "serve the song" deserves as much consideration.

    I did have the option for either guitar back six months ago. I warmth of the Blue Lava won me over. The low E sounds round, full and beautiful, better than most traditional guitar despite the size of the guitar. I left it in the car once and the electronic took 30 min to cool down before it will function. I would imagine that can happen to either guitar. I wish it has a cut away though.

    The blue lava touch and lava me touch firmware is a little different.
    Blue lava touch has 2GB ram and 16 GB rom.
    Lava Me 3 has 4 GB ram and 32 GB rom.
    So practically, the lava me 3 will start up and run slightly quicker than the blue lava touch.

    They remind me of the difference between a standard wooden guitar against the ovation with the graphite back. I actually prefer the Blue Lava sound much warmer and less of that metallic tailing off when you stop playing. I have a feeling with the Me guitar it would get EQ'd back to the warmer sound anyway in a recording... in my opinion.

      I can't believe so few people noticed the sound you mentioned. It sounds HORRIBLE! You can hear it all the time but most when he starts to play or finishes. I noted 6:07 as the most noticeable and called the noise a high pitched warble for lack of a professional description. And it was only the gray guitar, not the blue one. We must have bat like hearing or something? I even rewatched it with headphones to be sure it wasn't my TV.

    I like the concept of the guitar and the video was excellent as usual Darrell. The HPL is called the Me 2 in the U.K. I think. Not sure why but they don’t put the neck dimensions or scale length on their website, strange omission and surely most guitarists would want to know before committing to buying one. What do you think?

    I too liked the cheaper Lava Blue better- sounds more like a "normal" acoustic. The Lava me 3 is more resonant, but seems to me to be a little too much so , so it almost sounds like a pre-reverb ("preverb?) effect (did I just invent a new word ha)? Darrell I'm shopping for a guitar and I can't stop watching your great videos!

    Good job, Darrell! I saw another video you did on the Blue Lava, but you didn't touch on the "playability" aspect, i.e., the neck. I'm glad you mentioned it here.
    I agree with your on the sounds of the guitars, I liked the carbon fiber one a bit better. Having them back-to-back like you did was a good comparison.
    I know you were really tickled about the Blue Lava and it's tech when you reviewed it before, I'd sure like to try it out. But overall, the carbon fiber one is just out of my price range right now. Oh, well. I do need to get a new acoustic guitar, got any recommendations? (Within my budget, that is...)

      Its too bad you could some fine gripping particles to give it better nonslick surface. This could added at the manufacturing process probably without much change in the tone characteristics. It seems they must gotten enough concerns about the slippage as consumer feedback and move the cure into their next model. Don't do this however, I myself would be temped to see if roughing up the surface a bit with some med grit sandpaper would improve its not slipping. However the finish wouldn't look cool afterwards. Another suggest would ask to talk to technical support and ask for any suggested solutions that might work. You could use a A frame guitar support might help. Hope this isn't too much.

  • @mboyer68
    @mboyer68 ปีที่แล้ว

    The lava me 3 has this high pitch warble, you can really hear it as he lets it ring out around 6:06. Edit: I even rewatched it with headphones on versus on the TV and it was the same thing. And the other one definitely didn't have that noise.
    They're cool but I don't think they possibly could've made them any more boring to look at. Why are so many acoustic guitars so plain? Don't they realize they have competition, and people like something good looking? Being molded, they could've done so many things with the design. But since form follows function it's not a deal breaker, but I probably would've already bought one if they were cool looking!

    I'm with 6String Codger. I had a LavaMe2 for about 6 months. Zero support from Lava 'cause I bought it used (i.e. not from them). I liked the shape and sound and carbon fiber durability, but the tech gets outdated far too quickly. Also (can't tell from the video) the bridge/saddle on the LavaMe2 was not adjustable at all, and the intonation of the guitar was slightly off from the get-go. I eventually got frustrated with that and sold it.

      Yep. These are designed to be replaced every year. Junk IMO.

    Great video. How do you like the setup? Is the action good? I noticed the blue lava had a truss rod but the ME 3 does not.. I'm guessing to adjust the action on the ME 3 you have to do it at the bridge??? Thanks

    Ya,,, what a difference in the sounds of the more expensive guitar,,, the lava me 3 so much richer sound! But they both sounded good! And I would probably start out with the cheaper one! Only because not a fan of the slot hole! But think the screen is cool!

    Lava are cool guitars but I wish they had a different headstock- makes it look like a little kid's toy guitar. i thought Blue sounded a bit better here.

    Do either of these have an output jack? Can it be plugged into a mixer?

    So, in addition to the material, the only other difference is the charging dock present on the Me3, which is missing on the Blue Lava?

    Humidity is big question for me, I know it was already said that HPL is more resistant to humidity, but does anyone know how resistant? I live in Florida and I absolutely love playing outside, and I kind of want to start playing at the beach. But the humidity aspect makes me paranoid. Yes, I know playing on the beach makes me "that guy", but it's just so relaxing and I want to keep doing it but I'm afraid that it's not a good idea

    Nice video once again.
    I'm not sure I like this kind of technology but maybe I'm just being a Luddite.
    That said I thought the Lava Me 3 sound was light years ahead of the Blue Lava.

    Both guitars are good. But Lava me3 sounds better.

    With that bottom being so smooth, does the guitar not slide around on your leg?

    • @ianwilkinson932

      I've got the lava me3 and there's no slide. Mainly because the guitar is so light it's very well balanced.
