It's been my experience that police are profiling obvious tourists too. Personally stopped driving scooters w/o international licence there years back after having been stopped by police 4 times in a 3 week vacation. Once on a busy road with 1000s of Thais, many w/o helmets passing w/o being stopped before jumping out in the road to stop the tall white dudes. Some police check points were so notorious for stopping farang that expats recommended to pretend not noticing - cause the police would always find something to fine you for. Maybe things are changing nowadays though.

If the new fines turn out to be evenly applied to both Thai locals and tourists, the increase is a great idea (and great start) to improving road safety in Thailand. As I’m sure you are aware, Thailand has a history of having a high rate of road fatalities each year. I’m not sure why anyone these days would ride a scooter without a helmet, so maybe the higher fines are what is needed to get people to comply with road safety for their own benefit.

When i first came to Pattaya for a visit in 2007 i was advised to get an international license before going. I was in the USA, So i went to Triple A, it took me around 15 minutes and cost $15 dollars back then. Personally i do think they target foreigners differently than Thai people. I think just as many Thai's will get pulled over for not having a helmet, but with foreigners the police will sometimes try to get extra money out of you. Before covid the police stops were getting out of control. I was stopped three times in one day just going from Jomtien to Pattaya and back in an hours time. And at one police stop the cop asked me for my book, but i never carry my green book with me. And he ticketed me, one time the police man said that my bike didn't have original paint, and he acted like he was going to ticket me for it, but then i said to him that i just got the bike registered and they said my bike was ok for registration. So then the cop said for me to go and he didn't ticket me, but if i was on holliday and didnt speak up for my self, he probably would've pocketed some money from me, one time a few years ago i was driving a car outside of Pattaya and i was in the far left lane on Sukumvit Rd, and the light turned red as i was coming up to it, but i stayed in the left lane because i had to turn left at a shop right past the light, but there was a car behind me who wanted to go left, so to be a good guy i tried to pull halfway into the lane next to me so the car behind me could turn, and as soon as i pulled to the right, a cop jumped out that was hiding around the corner just waiting for people who did the exact same thing that i did, and he took my license and said i had to follow him to the station a few blocks away, and when i went inside this really small station. There was a higher up officer behind the desk, and i sat in front of him with my thai girl friend as he wrote a fine on a little piece of paper, and then he asked me for 1000 baht, i couldn't believe it was so much money but i handed him a thousand baht bill, and he looked at me right in my eyes and smiled as he slowly put my 1000 baht bill into his shirt pocket. Like he was rubbing it in my face, and he made it very clear that the money was for him. Not for the police station. Another time i got pulled over on my motorbike even though i had a helmet on and so did my cute thai girl friend who i had been with for around six months, when i got off the bike the cop didnt ask me for anything, he just started talking to my girl friend for almost ten minutes. And then he finally looked over my bike and said i could go, so when he walked away i said to my girlfriend, what was the long conversation about. And she said the entire conversation was him asking her about me, and when she said i was her boyfriend, the cop spent ten minutes telling her how a foreign man will just use her and cheat on her left and right. And how she shouldnt waist her time with me.
It used to be years ago that if a foreigner had his helmet on and his registration showing on the bike, and you showed a thai license at a police stop. They would would usually just waive you on. But now they try to invent other things to get you for, like the blinkers aren't original. Or some other made up bullcrap. But i am not saying that this will always happen. But sometimes it will.
You should make a video asking foreigners why they think they are targeted different then thai people. And ask them to leave there stories in the comments.

I stayed almost in a year in Phuket and at the check points, the police rarely stopped locals, even those not wearing helmets. They specifically targeted foreignhers with helmet and licence checks. Even if a thai was riding with me not wearing a helmet he or she were never checked. And at my 2 stays at Pattaya, it was the same. Maybe in non tourist areas, the check the locals but in tourist areas, they definetely target the farangs.

I saw that as well. I made a video riding in pattaya and I got pulled over at that very same spot...Hilton. While I was there, I only saw non looking Thai getting pulled over. Dark skin Asians were invisible to the cops.. A fair skin couple was pulled over. They looked Korean from far away but they were thai. The cop did write the driver a ticket for expired license. My friend translated the conversation, when I sent him the video. I wasn't charged...but he tried.

Phuket targets tourists I know that for a fact but the rest of the country as soon as they see me they let me right through every check point no license for 15 years just one ticket in Phuket and it wasn't much ..... I will get it now that I'm retired and here full time because if you do get in a wreck it won't be good and being in a foreign country one should obey the law.

Phuket is Mafia home and perfection of tourism scams, no other place is more fucked up in Thailand and I travel all over the country over 30years now. Country side is usually more relaxed and equally to everyone passing by. Never had a bad experience in rural Thailand with police, in Nakluea they set the tourist trap checkpoint just opposite a school and all the kids were driving by underage with 5 people without been stopped the time my license was checked. Usually travel with the international license and had a local license for many years in Thailand because of my longer winter escape vacations. But that is every time a two day job to renew that local license. One at immigration with the landlord and another one at department of transportation.

I also used to take a motocy from lower Suk to Pinklao 5 times a week (it's a long and some would say suicidal ride), not always with a helmet (in the early days when i was pissed and didn't know any better). Never stopped or fined. But, please wear a helmet everyone. My helmet got stolen from the underground in our building a couple weeks ago. Very rare occurrence. Thing is it's an extra large and I had to look everywhere to find one that fit. I found it in Bangkok at a now closed store. Couldn't find a replacement. Anyway I live in Jomtien and often ride around without one here but if my wife and I go shopping at Central we always wear them as they pull everyone over checking licenses and helmets. Never seen one in Jomtien. Until the other night. We went for dinner at the local market and got pulled over. Wife had hers on. 200 baht fine the night before the new fines were reported to start. Went to pay the fine at Pattaya Police and wife told me she would go pay. She paid 200 as a Thai. I put the bike in her name so that's why she got away with it. Farang paying beside her for no helmet paid 500. Seems to be different rules. Got a new helmet large size through Lazada. One more thing. We were told by Honda to not keep the bike title in the bike because if it gets stolen the person can sell it so we didn't. Cop told me it's a fine not to have it with the bike. Police Station said to photo copy it and keep that with bike. Finally, if you're here for long term get your Thai Drivers License. It's not a big deal and worth it and good throughout SEA.

Another thing to know is if you get an international driver's license you must have the motorcycle stamp to drive a motorcycle or scooter in Thailand. Without the stamp you could get a ticket in Thailand.
One year my friend who has a motorcycle license here in Texas went to AAA to get his international driver's license and they did not stamp the motorcycle license part of the international driver's license. He got three tickets at three different check points during his holiday.

However, once on a beer-run my helmet was stolen while I was inside the store and I was forced to ride helmet-less the two blocks back to my residence. I initially wore an open face helmet then a full face when I got into racing. Helmets are optional after having your license for one year where I live.
Although I had an International Drivers license when I first visited Thailand, after witnessing the traffic from the back of a Tuk-tuk in Bangkok, I decided to trust my transportation needs to the locals. Surprising how fast a motorcycle taxi can get through the back alleys to your destination.

Hey Loucas, my understanding is that in order to use an International License you must have the equivalent license in your home country. That is to say that you must have a motorcycle license in your home country in order to ride a motorcycle with the International Permit. That may just be as far as travel insurance is concerned but still a very important detail.

yes, that is the way I understand it as well. The IDP mirrors your license including the class of vehicle, so if you are not licensed to operate motorcycle in your home country you are not licensed here even with the IDP.

@@Rides4Kickz I sure would like to know if a Motorcycle "stamp" is needed for the 150cc class scooters. I was under the impression that is needed only for a larger engine displacement bike. Any thoughts?

    • @keithd1219
      @keithd1219 ปีที่แล้ว

@@cabowabo5557 good question but I understand you need it for anything 150 and above. Even if you never plan on getting a motorcycle, it may be a good idea to take a motorcycle training class (they provide the motorcycle). Not only do you get the motorcycle endorsement but you get invaluable training that even if you think you're a veteran rider, you'll learn or hone your skills. Then no worries at all when you travel and rent a scooter or motorcycle.
UPDATE: According to several Google searches, regardless of the CC, you need a motorcycle endorsement to ride legally in Thailand.
Also, if you have travel health insurance while in Thailand that covers motorbike crashes, if you don't have a motorcycle endorsement should you get into a crash, the insurance will not cover you as you were technically driving illegally.

  • @oddviews

I have lived in Thailand for 20 years. As far as helmet wearing is concerned there is no change from the 50-50 ratio of helmet wearers or otherwise in all that time. Plenty of talk and little or nothing in the way of enforcement of much of any of the traffic laws! And the places I have lived, includes Khon Kaen, Surat Thani, Chiang Mai, Lamphun and for the last 5 years in Lampang. The checkpoints I am familiar with currently are manned around only twice a month for about two hours. Back on precise topic is the current structure of fines that is not limited to helmets but the wearing of car seat belts and in particular those of children where special seats have been stipulated. The laws of helmet wearing haven't changed, only the increase in the fines, It is worth noting also that even when fines are imposed a great proportion of them are completely ignored. I think that the B2,000 fine for not wearing a helmet should be enforced now! There does does need to be some flexibility in timing about children's seats that will involve expense that many people will have difficulty with and the three months "non-enforcement" I can see as being reasonable. I would remind everyone that to conform to the traffic laws costs nothing! But conform to the laws for safety reasons not just because of the law!

But, mainly is because if I don't have a licence means if I a crash my insurance would be void.

Good video very informative. I watched the police in front of the police station one day and it did not look to me that they favored pulling in foreigners. I wear a helmet for my own personal safety so I am good there. My tax and insurance is paid up so good there too. I have a Thai license. On rare occasions they will ask to see a copy of your green book, what they look for is the line where the last tax was paid. Not sure but maybe the title page showing the owner too, I got nabbed 200 B for that one a few years back. Never carry the green book with you except for when you are paying the tax and insurance. When I get caught in a check point 90 percent of the time they just want to see my license, 30 seconds is all it takes. DUI is the big one it was 20,000 but I wonder if that goes up too maybe 40,000 hmm, I never drink and drive. With Taxies as cheap as they are here, just grab one of them if you get drunk. Be safe all.

And for the insane raise in prices... if they really want to have an impact and make traffic more safe in thailand, they need to schock, or there won't come a change. So hope for the best. And like you started the video " wear a helmet for your own safety, not to avoid a possible fine!"
