I had always thought that Dr. Amnesia was the singer, and that she fell in love with some odd imaginary version of herself after forgetting who she was, narcissus-style
Yeah, I thought that the singer was the Doctor who works on patients' brains and repairs memory loss, I mean, the song demonstrates how the main character gets details mixed up, so I always thought it was the character mixing up what she did as a doctor and what she did and hear as a patient.
It wasn’t till reading the comments that I realized “beautiful eyes” and “memory loss” were switched. I thought that line meant that the singer IS Amnesia, and aside from the doctor, they were only talking to themself
After hearing this after a long while I kinda noticed that he mistaked his wife for a doctor and not just her name, he described intimate scenarios that doctors typically don't have with their patients. And he's so into her, which rarely happens unless if it was a movie. While she's trying to keep him remembering he just forgets her and thinks she's a doctor until she just leaves in heartbreak and hopelessness and his gut feeling is the only thing that remembers.
The detail of the change of color on the subtitles from red to blue implying that the mind was fixed... That stuck out with me a lot as a minor detail that shows the love it was put on this.
I've confirmed with this song's Genius page that this song is about a patient who has the mental illness, Amnesia. The song's lyrics get more awkward and messed up as the song progresses, showing the patient's condition deteriorating. At the end of the song, when they have surgery to "repair" their mind, the patient realizes that they were in love with "Amnesia", a personification of their mental illness. The final line of the song goes: "I remember when I realized she wasn't there..." They say this longingly, as if they missed "Amnesia". As if they missed their illness. This song is so depressing :(
