I had the honour of meeting and escorting him in 2014 at a Vijay Diwas event. He was 93 then. He was suffering from dementia due to old age. However, what amazed me was the fact that he remembered each and every incident of the glorious campaign of 1971 Indo Pak war, especially the surrender event.
What a magnificent soldier he was!
    A general salute to him!

As a great nation, we have millions inspiring stories. It is time we should to revisit our great heroes and express our gratitude. Last month, I visited our National War Memorial and shared a sombre experience at sun set. As a conscientious desi(I am an OCI), I was wondering:it took 75 years to make a National War Memorial (In India, there are several cemeteries where English Soldiers' graves are maintained by us!). It is time, we should make our narrative constructive and progressive.

      1) During 1965, Bengali soldiers on Pakistani pay role were patriotic and loyal, so INDIA could capture a small area of Lahore and Sialkot, but on other hand lost 6 times more area of Rajistan, Chhum Jaurian, Fazalk and Prominent town of KHEM KERN. Pakistani flag was hoisting on Dawarka Forte, 250 miles away from Karachi naval head quarter.
      2) During 1971, Bengali soldiers on Pakistani pay role were traitors and quisling and have been providing the secret information to their boss country INDIA, that led disintegration and defeat to my country Pakistan

We have to respect his views. However, anyone who knows the key players will mention the biggest role militarily was that of Gen. Manekshaw and Gen Arora. Also the brilliant Mrs. Indira Gandhi, T.N Kaul, Haksar, etc. played a big role in policy and as usual the USSR a loyal nation helped in every fashion. If the USSR had not helped there would have been no Bangladesh in the immediate future surely. Jacob was not too fond of the USSR all know the reasons. He loved China more than the USSR but China ran out of fright in this war rather than take on India. Jacob had a role but not the prime one certainly Yet I respect this proud Indian general.
